GAUGER: August m: Louise Schroeder From Der Nord Westen, 06 May 1909: On the same farm, in the same house and in the same room where they were married 02 May 1859, Mr. and Mrs. August Gauger in Cooperstown celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary last Sunday. Mr. Gauger is 72 and his wife, the former Louise Schroeder, is 68. He came directly to Cooperstown from Germany 52 years ago and bought a piece of land for 60¢ an acre. That was certainly a bargain, but it required a great deal of time and effort as well as sweat of the brow to make a farm of that wild land. Only people like this can testify to the joys and sorrows of what pioneer life had cost. Two years after his arrival our friend married Miss Louise Schroeder who has stood by him all these years. They had a number of children of whom 9 are still living. Due to the age of the couple the farm was turned over to their son Heinrich, however the elderly couple continues to make their home there. They were the first couple to have been married in the Lutheran Church there… Attending were the couple’s children, 19 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. The Rev. John Guse of Austin, Minnesota, one of the grandchildren, led a worship service in their residence. In all, over 100 relatives, neighbors and friends participated in the celebration. The children of the couple are Mrs. F. Guse in Manitowoc, Mrs. L. Heise in Cooperstown, Hermann Gauger in De Pere, Mrs. M. Radue and Mrs. Bertha Radue in Luxemburg, Kewaunee County, Mrs. A. Heinrich in Morrison, Heinrich Gauger, who lives on the old homestead in Cooperstown, August Gauger in Manitowoc Rapids, and Mrs. Wm. Krueger in Gibson.
