The accident happened shortly after 2 o'clock. The child was playing in the road and in attempting to light a pile of rubbish that had been raked up, the match ignited her clothing and before assistance could reach her, she had been fatally burned. The entire lower portion of her body was charred and when a physician arrived he held out no hope for recovery. The child suffers intensely and her condition is most pitiable. A number of other children were playing with the child but they were so frightened that no assistance could be rendered, even had they been old enough to appreciate the seriousness of the accident. It is a strange coincident that just three years ago this time the girl's mother lost her life in a similar manner, being badly burned and suffering the most intense agony for five days before death relieved her. A father, four brothers and two sisters make up the afflicted family. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Friday, May 04, 1900, Page 1 ***** SUFFERS NO MORE Little Veronica Glysz Dies From Her Burns Just as the birth of another day was announced by the tolling of the midnight hour Friday, death relieved little Veronica Glysz from her sufferings and the soul took its flight to the maker. For hours after the sad accident wherein her body was burned so terribly the child suffered the most excruciating pain and all that medical skill could suggest was powerless to afford relief; until death mercifully interposed and claimed her for its own. The accident is one of peculiar sadness and the sympathy of the entire community will be extended to the bereaved father and family. Veronica was a bright child and very popular with her playmates. The funeral will probably be held Monday morning. GLOE: Henry m: 18 Nov. 1880 (co. mar. index v.4 p.168) to: Elizabeth Flentje Thrice Married Last Saturday evening Henry Gloe of this city was united in marriage for the third time to the same woman, having been twice divorced from her. He obtained his last divorce during the session of the circuit court at Manitowoc last June. By the terms of the last divorce he was to pay his divorced wife six hundred dollars within a certain number of months, but the time being nearly expired and he being utterly unable to raise the amount he held a conference with the woman and explained to her the situation, which is substantially as follows: The property on Washington Street owned by Gloe is worth two thousand dollars; on this there are encumbrances amounting to about fourteen hundred dollars and of course, no one could be found willing to riskk a load on the property for a sum sufficiently large to pay off existing debts and also the alimony of the divorced wife. Proceedings of foreclosure against the property were begun several months ago and unless som arrangement could be made between the divorced couple there were certain and immediate prospects of the property going into the hands of creditors and with it would go the only chance the divorced woman had of ever getting a cent in the way of alimony. If the property went to satisfy the mortgage the prospects were that the woman and children would remain a charge upon the city as they have been for the past two months. So Gloe and his former wife agreed to get married again. She to relinguish her claim upon him for alimony and he to give her a deed of the property. The property yields about $24 month rent besides furnishing a home for herself and children. She expects to raise the money necessary to pay off the encumbrances by a new loan and to live on the rent. Gloe surrendered the property, however, only on her agreement to marry him again and to be a good wife to him, but this was not in accordance with her programme, for within an hour after their marriage she resented his amorous advance by a blow which precipitated a row. To Gloe's credit he gave the tricky dame a good trouncing, but he was sent to the county jail, therefore where he is now speinding his honeymoon. Manitowoc County Chronicle - Tues., Sept. 11, 1894

Photo Bertha (Goeres photos contributed by researcher/see contributors page) Celebrate Golden Wedding Monday, January 9th, marked the fiftieth anniversary of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Goeres Sr., pioneer residents of Kiel. The happy event was fittingly celebrated at Geigel's Hall Sunday night in the presence of the family, old time friends and acquaintances who had been invited to attend. At 8 o'clock, when the couple appeared at the hall, they were greeted with joyful felicitations by the guests and with a rousing serenade by the full Kiel Arion Orchestra, which was on hand to furnish music for the occasion. Everybody soon entered into the spirit of the happy event, and a quartet, composed of four granddaughters and singing by the whole assemblage did much to liven things up. All three sons of the couple responded to a request for a few appropriate remarks, the iceman in particular distinguished himself in his characteristic manner, declaring that it was deplorable that in this great land of the free, one was not permitted to partake of anything stronger than pop and near beer. The celebration, large as it was, would have been a much greater social success if good old fashioned lager beer could have been dispensed "between the acts", Mr. Goeres Sr. declared. Mrs. John Schuster recited a poem suitable for the occasion, which was greatly applauded by the listeners. Dancing furnished the principal amusement, the guests tripping the "light fantastic" until 5 o'clock Monday morning. A delicious lunch, which only Mrs. H. J. Goeres knows how to prepare, was served. The couple was the recipient of a very liberal gift in gold by their children. Henry Goeres, one of the pioneers of Kiel and a man known all over Manitowoc and adjoining counties, was born near Dusseldorf, Germany, May 20, 1846, a son of Bernhard Goeres. The family came to the United States in 1856, that same year later came to Kiel which at that time consisted of four log houses. Bernhard Goeres established the first blacksmith shop, which was later conducted by another son, Max, until he was drowned in the Sheboygan River. Henry Goeres learned the painter's trade and followed it until he retired, and as he had studied law, although he was never admitted to the bar, he acted as legal advisor for many of his neighbors. For years he was deputy sheriff and constable and for over thirty years was a notary public. In addition he served many years as road commissioner. On January 9, 1872 he married Bertha Frese of Holstein, Germany, their children were as follows: Henry Jr., iceman of Kiel, Maxx, a dentist of Kiel, Theodore O., a dentist of Lodi, Wis., and three who died in infancy. After Mr. Goeres' retirement from the painters trade the couple lived for many years on a small farm near the Kiel cemetery known as "Schloss Luxemberg"; for the past few years they have been residents of Kiel. Mr. Goeres has interested himself considerably in literary matters; he is the author of a story entitled "Yellow Bird" which gives a very accurate description of conditions in the pioneer days of Kiel. He has also been correspondent for many years. A curious collection and valuable as well is one made by him, comprising hand-painted eggs of all the noted people of the world, and flower designs of every description. This collection numbers some 8000 specimens and was an exhibition at the Columbian World's Exposition in 1893. Mr. and Mrs. Goeres are still hale and hearty and enjoyed the celebration in honor of their golden wedding anniversary to the fullest extent, their children and friends wish them many more happy returns of their wedding day and hope that they may live to celebrate the diamond anniversary of their marriage. The following out of town guests attended the golden wedding celebration of Mr. and Mrs. Goeres Sr., at Giegel's Hall on Sunday night: Mrs. M. Hoke Chicago, Mrs. H. Heyen and Mr. and Mrs. G. Shrenkenthaler of Milwaukee and Theo Goeres and family of Lodi. Kiel Tri County Record, Jan. 12, 1922

Luth. ch., Manitowoc (co. mar. index v.4 p.52) to: Johanna Raether b: 17 Jan. 1855 in Pommern p: Friedrich Raether and Auguste Kaems WEDDING ANNIVERSARY. Mr. and Mrs. William Gomoll Entertain in Honor of Their 27th. Wedding Anniversary. It was twenty-seven years ago last night that Mr. and Mrs. William Gomoll spoke the words that pledged them to share each others joys and sorrows and united their destines for "better or for worse," until "God himself doth part." Mrs. Gomoll considered this an altogether too important event to be allowed to pass by unobserved and so issued invitations to a number of their friends and relatives to spend the evening at her home. The invitations were heartily responded to, for an evening spent at the Gomoll home is always one of rare pleasure, and eight o'clock found a houseful of friends to offer congratualtions and well-wishes to their "host" and "hostess." The evening was passed in social intercourse and in talking over reminiseeness of the couples early life. Tempting refreshments were served. The day was of double significance to Mr. Gomoll for it not only marked the completion of his twenty-seven years of wedded life, but it also reminded him of his passage of the fifty-first milestone in his walk of life. This party was one of the most pleasant social events of the season, and the evening will long be remembered, by those present as one of the most pleasant. Following are the names of those present: Rev. Machmueller, Mr. and Mrs. John Stahl, Mr. and Mrs. William Tech, Mr. and Mrs. Ferd. Peters, Mrs. Julius Raether, Mrs. Sophia Stahl, Misses Ida Stahl, Augusta Gomoll, Josephina Stahl, Messrs. Emil Stahl, August Tech, Albert Stahl, Henry Klein, William Stahl.
