Born: June 21, 1822 in Stemmern, Saxony, Prussia.
Trained as a surveyor, in 1842-43 he served one year in
a Prussian Engineering Regiment in Magdeburg, Prussia.
Emigrated to U.S. April 1849, landing at Port of New York
May 25, 1849. Worked as a Surveyor in Mequon until 1851,
when moved to St Louis, MO. Employed as a County surveyor.
In August 1858 Carl won an election for appointment as
County Engineer for St Louis County. His opponent was Ulysses
S. Grant. Enlisted in volunteers for service in Civil War in
April 1861 for 3-month service. Re-enlisted when his brother
Frederick was promoted and Carl was appointed Colonel of the
9th Wisconsin by his brother, Wisconsin Governor, Edward Salomon.
Mustered out of service, December 3, 1864. Breveted a Brigadier
General in March 1865. Re-appointed to civil engineer. After
death of his wife in 1879, he went to Salt Lake City to visit
brother Frederich. Carl died there on January 9, 1881 and is
buried in Mt Olivet Cemetery, Salt Lake City.
