Capt. Chas H. Cunningham has been appointed Major. Manitowoc Pilot Friday, June 3, 1864 pg. 1 ***** IN MEMORIAM. The death of Hon. T. G. Olmsted, which occurred at Manitowoc, Tuesday the 26th of February last, removed from our midst almost the last survivor of a circle of young men who, upwards of twenty years ago, gave tone and character to society, politics and in some sense, the morality of our County seat. Born in Howard, Stube Co,. February 23d, 1833, he had barely reached his majority when, in 1856, he left his eastern home of comfort and cast his lot in the then small but aspiring village of Manitowoc. His was at the time when Judge Lee, Charles Walker (afterwards Judge) George Glover, the Vanvalkenbergs and others were just entering upon the stage of public affairs, and shaping public events, which have culminated in the handsome, enterprising and prosperous city of to-day. At once the deceased was accorded a warm welcome by those who had preceded him and he went to work with intelligence, hope, and an honest courage, which has rarely been more strikingly displayed, but alas with also a disposition to excess in social and convivial pleasures, which at last has obscured at its setting, a career which but for this one weakness, promised to be the brightest and most successful. The deceased was married to Miss Lizzie Cole, of Kenosha, when he had reached the age of twenty-four years, and though she gladdened his heart with her presence here but a short time, having died during his first year’s service in the rebellion, she lived long enough to show him to be a most devoted and affectionate husband. His friends who witnessed his untiring love and care for his young and dying wife, and afterwards his loving and filial ministrations to his aged mother during her last lingering sickeness, saw but additional proofs of the almost perfected character he would have built had he developed more application and yielded less to the demands of convivialty. He was appointed Clerk of the Circuit Court for Manitowoc County, to fill a vacancy, and was afterwards elected to one and we believe two terms of the same office. His career in the service, as one of the regimental officers of what he always styled “the bloody twenty-seventh” was in the highest degree creditable, ad we believe no one in the service enjoyed the entire confidence and esteem of the private soldier or of the officer below him in rank to a greater extent than did he. Five years ago he was elected County Judge of this county which position he has filled with unswerving honesty for the four years ending January 1st, 1878. Seven or eight years ago, in company with H.L. Bollmeyer, he became proprietor of the Manitowoc Pilot, and after the office was destroyed by fire and his partner upon whom he relied principally to conduct the paper had left him in the lurch, he found it necessary to depend upon himself, and did not take sole control. Had he been permitted a choice in the matter he would hardly have entered the editorial service, nothing in his previous life indicating any aspiration or tasteful for journalistic honors; but having been forced into the service he developed qualities as a writer unknown to himself. He lacked however the relish for plodding labor and continuous study without which in this day it is impossible to become eminent as a newspaper writer. The writer of this became acquainted with deceased on his first trip to Two Rivers in 1856, and during all the succeeding years has reciprocated a warm unbroken friendship. In laying this little tribute on his grave we have attempted no concealment of his weaknesses—we will not call them faults—for well we know the rough honesty and blunt candor that would chide such an attempt, were our friend to appear and speak his own wishes in the matter. His fitful life is ended, but in many a home circle particularly among the more lowly, will the memory of his kindness rendered without ostentation, induce the remark we heard from a laboring man the other day, “No better hearted man ever lived.” Friend. Manitowoc Pilot, March 7, 1878 P. 3 ********* IN MEMORIAM.—COL. T. G. OLMSTED. At a meeting of those who served in the Twenty-seventh Wisconsin Infantry, held in Kewaunee on the afternoon of the 3d inst., for the purpose of giving formal expression of their regret for the death of Col. T. G. Olmsted, Mr. Henry Tisch was called to the Chair and Mr. P. J. Rooney was chosen Secretary. Moved and carried that the Chair appoint a committee of five to draft resolutions expressive of the sentiment of the meeting. The chair appointed Messrs. Valentine Hoffmann, Alfred Vibber, John Wickham, Aleck Trudell and Peter Bregger. The Committee submitted as their report the following: We, the surviving members of the Twenty-seventh Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, living in Kewanee and vicinity, having learned with profound sorrow of the recent death of Col. Ten Eyck Olmsted, do resolve: 1. That in the death of Col. Olmsted we are called upon to mourn the loss of one who was a gallant, fearless commander, and at the same time a friend. Always cool and unflinching in the hour of danger, and ever solicitous for the welfare of his men, his intrepid bearing in the field, his watchful care for comfort in the camp, and his personal interest in the well-being of each one of us earned our respect and esteem for him as an officer and our affectionate regard for him as a man. 2. That we shall ever cherish in lively remembrance his many noble qualities, and deeply deploring his loss, we extend to his surviving relatives our heartfelt sympathy, assuring them that we are sharers in their great sorrow. 3. That the Secretary be requested to furnish copies of these resolutions for publication in the Manitowoc Pilot and Kewaunee Enterprise. NAZIANZ MAN Late John Pflueger Had Lived in Eventful Life John Pflueger, a St. Nazianz pioneer, whose death occurred last week had an eventful career. Unfortunately though, after urged to so by his children, the old gentleman never put the story of his life in writing. Had he done so it would have been a thrilling recital for the present generation, which cannot realize in these days of railroads, automobiles, airships and wireless telegraphs, the cruel conditions existing in Europe in the days when Mr. Pflueger and men of his age were boys. Mr. Pflueger's boyhood was spent at Edlingen, Baden. At the age of 19 years,, Mr. Pflueger became a medical student at the famous university of Heidelburg. In those days the universities were the storm centers for every revolutionary reform and the student body was always the first to start an armed revolution to accomplish the reform. It was natural therefore, that when the terrible upheavals of 1848 took lace, Mr. Pflueger plunged into the maelstrom as a soldier in the army of the King of Baden. Even at that early day, Prussia was laying its deep laid schemes for amalgamating all the German states and in course of events, out of revolution in 1848. Prussia came forth more powerful than ever and harsh treatment was accorded those who were not in her favor. Mr. Pflueger was captured and sentenced to be shot. But relatives, by bribing the guards, enabled him to escape and he fled to Marseilles, France. He joined the French foreign legions and served a year as a soldier in Morocco. Discharged on account of illness, he worked his way to France and in 1850 decided to try his fortunes in America. He arrived at New Orleans and engaged in the practice of medicine. During his four years residence there he was married to Kate Bernhart, the loyal and faithful wife who now survives him. In 1854, the family came to St. Nazianz where Father Oswald was just organizing his colony and Mr. Pflueger was active in promoting its welfare. In 1864 he enlisted in the Union army and fought at the bloody battle of Chickamuagua. In 1879 they removed to St. Louis, Mo., being there until 1883 when they returned to St. Nazianz. In 1893 they moved to Brillion. Manitowoc Daily Herald - July 28, 1914

POSER FREDERICK 5th Wis. Vol. Inf. Company A Union Army Enlisted as sergt. 05/31/61 City of Manitowoc History--Promoted to Sergeant. Discharged disability 01/24/62. At the time of his enlistment, POSER was age 37 and married. ***** The Milwaukee Sentinel of Monday contains the following: On Saturday, Corner Kuepper was notified that Frederick Poser, resident on Buffalo St., had died suddenly under circumstances that required an official determination of the cause. Accordingly, coroner Kuepper summoned a jury and viewed the remains early yesterday forenoon. It was deemed advisable to order a post mortem examination to give the doctors ample time, the inquest was adjourned until 10:30 this forenoon. The deceased was well known in business circles through his connection with the old time hardware house of Haney & Co., and more recently as one of the employees of Suelflohn & Seefeld, dealers in carriage and wagon goods. He came to this country from Bremen and settled in Manitowoc, served during the war for the Union and then became a resident of Milwaukee. He had been out of employment for over a year and this had preyed on his feelings so that he really became an object of the warmest sympathy of his relatives. Toward the close of last week, however, he was fortunate enough to secure an engagement and to his elation over his good luck his death is attributed, the reaction proving fatal. The son-in-law in charge of the funeral arrangements declares that he died of joy. Poser leaves a large family of wife and children, most of the latter grown up and able to care for themselves. Many of our citizens will remember the subject of the above. He was for a number of years engaged in the hotel business here. Manitowoc Tribune - Thurs., May 17, 1877
