ZANDER AND BRIDE OF 50 YEARS AGO CELEBRATE GOLDEN WEDDING AT ZANDER TODAY At their country home at Zander today, Mr. and Mrs. William Zander, pioneer residents of the county, are celebrating their golden wedding anniversary and many relatives and friends will join with the couple in the happiness of the occasion. The celebration is an informal affair but Mr. and Mrs. Zander are so widely known that a large party is gathered. Mr. Zander has for many years been postmaster at Zander and Eastwin having been appointed term after term until his service has spanned a period of 30? years or more. He came here in early days and with his wife has resided in the county all of their married life. He served as a member of the county board for years and has been prominent in affairs of the north section of the county. Many friends join in tendering to the couple congratulations upon their wedding anniversary. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Friday, April 20, 1917, Page 8 ******** CELEBRATED GOLDEN WEDDING A large gathering of many friends and relatives from far and near marked the celebration for the 50th anniversary of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. William Zander of Eastwin last Friday night. The Zanders are among the oldest settlers in the county. The feast was spread in the dance hall at Eastwin and places so as to represent the letter Z. Covers were laid for eighty. Albert Johannes, a son-in-law of Mr.and Mrs. Zander, presided as toastmaster. Toasts and talks were given and tears were mingled with joy. A poem composed by Rev. Davidson of Madison for the occasion was read by Edith Zander. A poem was sent by a farm away brother of Grandma Zander who also sent a box of lilacs and apple blossoms from Oklahoma. The guests present were: Mrs. Lena Berner, Mary Berner, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Berner, Thelma Berner, Mrs. Otto Klessig and Harold Klessig of Antigo; Mr. and Mrs. I. O. Carlson, Rav and Spencer Carlson of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. William Rayner and Gordon Rayner of Oconomowoc; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Grosskopf, Mrs. Helen Humphrey, Laura Zander, Mr. and Mrs. George Lidicker, William and Roger Likicker of Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Paul, Erwin and Carl Paul of Edgar; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Zander, Elsie and Robert Zander, Mr. and Mrs. William Zander, Mrs. Rose Zander, Mrs. Nick Terens, Frederick and Frieda Terens of Manitowoc, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Zander, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Zander, Mercedes, Bernice, Arnold Jr. and Eugene Zander and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Zaner of Two Rivers; Edith Zander of Madison,, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Johannes, Elaine, Elma and Albert Johannes Jr., Emma and Walter Zander of Eastwin. Mr. Rayner of Oconomowoc, a nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Zander, who is an expert florist brought the flowers and decorated the tables for the occasion which were very beautiful. Colors were gold and white. William Zander was born in Mecklenberg, Schwerin, Germany in 1844 and came to this country when eleven years old. He settled in the Town of Gibson (now known as Zander) where in later years he owned a saw mill besides a farm which was a wilderness when he landed here with his parents. He held several town and county offices. In 1879 he was elected a member of assembly. In 1888 he purchased the Kingsbridge House and opened a general store in connection and was Postmaster there for seven years. He then moved to Two Rivers for two years and then to Manitowoc for two years but was not very successful in either place so he purchased Eastwin Hall (then known as Half Way House) where he has resided now for over twenty years and in all his undertakings, failure or success, he has always had by his side a loyal wife who always helped him over the rugged paths of life for fifty years and now manages a large household and is the true helpmate in every way as well as the best of mothers. Mrs. Zander was born in Pommern, Germany in 1848, came to this country when nine years old and resided in Manitowoc where she and her parents have seen many hardships for a few years. They then moved on a farm in Reedsville where April 20, 1867 William Zander and August Paul took the marriage vows which they have faithfully lived up to. They are the parents of seven children and twelve grandchildren who were all present at the golden wedding. The Reporter extends to the couple congratulations and best wishes for many more years of happiness. The Reporter, Fri., Apr. 27, 1917

ZETTELMANN: Joseph m: 27 Aug 1892 (co. mar. index v.6 p.164) to: Margaretha Hittner Hittner-Zettlemann Nuptials Last Friday morning, as the clock in the church steeple was striking the hour of six, Justice Gagnon was seen entering the residence of Mrs. H. M. Hittner with a formidable law book under his arm. An hour later, a small party dressed in somber garments were seen at the depot awaiting the morning train south. The part consisted of J.R. Zettlemann of Thomas' Orchestra of Chicago and Henry Hittner and his three sisters, Maggie, Katie and Bertha. The part was a wedding party though no one at the depot suspected it. The mission of Justice Gagnon to the Hittner mansion was to unite in wedlock J.R. Zettlemann and Miss Maggie Hittner and the young couple were at the depot to start in their wedding journey. Owning to the recent death of the bride's father, Dr. H. M. Hittner, the wedding, instead of being a grand affair as he had arranged, was as quiet and private as it could be made and the evidences of mourning were not laid aside but were worn by the bride on her wedding day. The young couple will be absent about two weeks and will ultimately take up their residence in Chicago. They are both professional musicians of rare attainments and have already won fame in their profession. The Chronicle trusts that their married life may prove as complete and harmonious as is the sweet music they crate by their magical touch. ZIARNIK: Paul m: Aug. 10, 1915 to: Mary Zawatsky DIDN'T TRUST BANKS, THIEVES GET HIDDEN MONEY JOYOUSNESS OF WEDDING DAY IS SHADOWED FOR MR. AND MRS. PAUL ZIARNIK BY LOSS OF SAVINGS OF $1000 While a large party of relatives and friends made merry in celebrating the marriage of Paul Ziarnik and Miss Mary Zawatsky at the home of the bride Tuesday night, thieves made way with $940 which the groom had secreted in the new home of the couple at 1024 So. Twenty-Second street, discovery of the robbery being made by Zairnik yesterday when he visited the hiding place of his money to secure funds for purchase of new furniture for the home. Report of the robbery was made to the police and an investigation is underway, but no clue to the thieves has been secured, though it is believed that the robbery was committed by someone familiar with the Zairnik home and the habits of the young groom. Mr. Zairnik had saved $1000 with which he proposed to furnish the new home and start housekeeping. He had used $60 of the amount for expenses of the wedding ceremony and the celebration and had placed the remaining $940 in a glass jar which he buried in the cellar of his home as he intended to use the money at once and did not desire to bank it. Following the wedding ceremony at St. Mary's church Tuesday the bridal party repaired to the home of the bride's parents on So. Sixteenth street where a celebration was held during the day and evening. When Zairnik and his bride reached their new home early Wednesday morning the groom immediately proceeded to the cellar to assure himself that his hidden horde was safe only to find that while the wedding festivities were in progress someone had entered the place, and after search had unearthed the treasure jar and made away with the savings. The robber or robbers evidently knew that the money was secreted in the cellar as the floor had been dug up in four places the first three attempts to locate the money having been failures. This leads Zairnik to believe that his secret had become known though he declares that he had confided in no one. The police believe that the robbery was the work of someone familiar with Zairnik and who knew that he had the money and would not deposit it in the banks. Mr. Zairnik is an industrious, hard working and saving young man and the money represented resources of the young couple to start their new life. It is said that Zairnik had no confidence in banks and that he believed that he could take care of his money as well as a banking institution. The loss is a heavy one and the robbery one of the largest in years here. Just why anyone should take chances with a sum so large with three of the best banks in the state in the city, is something unexplainable but the robbery will serve as a warning not only to Mr. Zairnik but to others as well. The police are working on the case but little progress has been made. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Thursday, August 12, 1915, Page 1
