PIERPONT: Edward J. From the Manitowoc Pilot, Thursday, September 13, 1888: Edward J. Pierpont of Council Bluffs, took a vacation of a few weeks with his parents at Two Rivers, returning to his work last week.

PIERPONT: H.S. b: 3 March 1823, Rochester, N.Y. The following is the obit for the father of H.S. Pierpont: We regret to announce the death of Rev. H.B. Pierpont, fo Rochester, N. Y., father of Judge H. S. Pierpot, of Two Rivers which event took place on Rochester N. Y. on the 19 inst., in the 80th year of his age. Our citizens will remember him as a resident with his son, in Two Rivers, some eleven years ago, and, although not for a very long time, yet kind enough to make himself beloved by all who made his acquaintance, for his many social and genial qualities. None knew him but to honor him, both as a Christian and as a gentleman. He has lived a long life of usefulness as a pastor of the Presbyterian Church and died full of years, in the blessed conciousness of a blameless life as an honored servant of God's ministry. We append the following extract from the Rochester Democrat of the 20 inst., in reference to the deceased: Death of Rev. H. B. Pierpont - Rev. Hezekiah B. Pierpont died at 7 o'clock Sunday morning at the residence of his son, J.E. Pierpont. He had reached his eightieth year and was one of the most vunerable clergymen in Western New York. He was a native of Connecticut, came to Rochester in 1821, and soon after was ordained a Presbyterian minister. The ordination of Rev. Dr. Wisner of Lockport, took place at the same time. Rev. Mr. Pierpont was a pastor of a church in Hopewell, Ontario county, for several years. Subsequently he sustained the same relations in Avon. During the last ten or more years he has resided in this city. he died of old age and not imperceptibly did the flickering taper of his life burn out that his last moments were as calm as if he had indeed fallen asleep. Rev. Mr. Pierpont leaves four children: Rev. James Pierpont, of San Francisco; Judge H. S. Pierpont, of Two Rivers, Wisconsin; J. E. Pierpont, of this city, and Mrs. U. A. Kellogg, formerly of Rochester, but now residing at Avon. Manitowoc Pilot, Nov. 30, 1871

PILON: Albert m: 20 Nov 1895 (co. mar. index v.6 p.324) to: Catharine Jennie Berners (From the correspondent in Two Rivers, 18 Nov.) Marriage Wed. of Albert Pilon, a member of Life Station #4, with Miss Katie Berners. The latter is a well beloved piano teacher and an organist in the Catholic Church. Der Nord Westen, 21 Nov. 1895 ***** Married Pilon – Berners At St. Luke's church, Wednesday, Nov. 29, 1895, Rev. Father Drews officiating, Mr. Albert A. Pilon and Miss Katherine Berners, both of this city. The wedding took place at St. Luke's Catholic Church, the services beginning at 9 o'clock am and lasting one hour and was throughout, very interesting and impressive. The bride was led to the altar by her brother, Edward Berners and the wedding party consisted of the bride and groo,, Misses Nana Nash and Theresa Peters as bridesmaids and Messrs. Geo. Pilon and Edward Berners as groomsmen. The bride was dressed in a gown of white with train and long flowing white veil with yellow roses in coifure and bodice. The bridesmaids were also dressed in white and wore similar flowers. The gentlemen of the party were dressed in the customary black dress suits. The party made a pretty sight as it stood grouped at the altar while the ceremony was in progress. Albert Pilon, the bridegroom, is a member of the U.S. Life Saving Crew at this place and besides, is interested in a boot and shoe store located on Walnut Street. He is an upright and clever young man and will, no doubt a devoted husband. His bride is a handsome and accomplished young lady, who has been reared in this city and who has a host of friends and admirers. The young coupe received many handsome and valuable presents. The Chronicle extends its congratulations. Manitowoc County Chronicle - Tues., Dec. 5, 1895 ***** Two Rivers news: Unabating perplexity hovers over the homes of the boys who mysteriously disappeared some time since. Several reason are given as the causes of their departure. It is claimed that the lost boys (Ephie Pilon and Johnnie Rau) had been contemplating a rambling tour around the world-the result of novel reading. The boys left about eight o'clock a week ago last Thursday evening just at the opening of a furious wind and snow storm, and as a small sail boat belonging to Capt. Pilon of the Life Saving Service, is also missing, it is suspected they went out on the lake. When it became known about town that the boys had run away, it was also discovered that they had procured a compass, geography, boat apparatus and their best clothing. On the same evening of their departure a fishermen who had arrived from on the lake percieived a small boat slowly making its way along the harbor piers towards the lake but not suspecting any mischief on the part of the occupants of the craft, took no further heed of them. It is again assumed that the boys are on land and have retired to some remote quarter to escape detection and that the missing boat was sent adrift by the western breeze which prevailed that evening merely as a means of deception. We believe, however, that the boys left by means of the craft, as young Pilon was very skillful in the management of a boat, but as the tempetuous weather which prevailed on that night was too violent to allow any small craft to live on the lake, they must have perished a short distance from here. The boy's parents have the sympathy of the community in their sad affliction. Manitowoc Lake Shore Times, Tuesday, November 24, 1885 P.3 ****** Two Rivers news: A boat answering to the description of the one taken from here by Masters Pilon and Rau was picked up by the Lifeboat men near Ludington, Mich. on the twentieth of this month. The boat was empty and had neither sail nor oars. Manitowoc Lake Shore Times, Tuesday, December 1, 1885 P.5

PLOECKELMAN: Henry m: 28 Jun 1864 to: Rosa Clare Tower A Jail Incident. - Esquire Reuter, on Tuesday last, was invited to visit the jail and unite Henry Ploeckelman and Rosa Clare Tower together in the holy bonds of matrimony. Mr. Ploeckelman is an inmate of the jail, confined on a charge of a petty offense. Rosa was confined on another charge; but the Grand Jury failing to indict her, she was released last week. It appears that she formed an attachment for her new husband, and in presence of the Sheriff and other persons the knot was tied by 'Squire R. "according to the statutes in such case made and provided." Manitowoc Pilot Friday, July 8, 1864 pg. 1 ***** Another Mysterious Death We are called upon to record another mysterious death in our county-not very unlike that of the terrible tragedy which took place in Two Rivers on the first of May last. Many of our readers know or have heard of Mary Tower, a person who was confined for some months last Spring in our county jail on a charge of obtaining goods under false pretences, and whose gender was a source of dispute among our citizens, from the fact that, although calling herself a woman, she bore a masculine appearance, and generally dressed herself in male attire. Shortly after her release from jail, she married Henry Ploeckelman, an inmate of that institution, and since that time has resided with his father in the town of Gibson, about one mile and a half distant from the village of Mishicott. She was considerable of an itinerant, and procured her living by traveling from house to house, deceiving the ignorant portion of community by telling fortunes etc. Naturally smart and cunning, she was successful in her occupation, and many a dollar has she picked up from greenhorns in the country towns of this and Sheboygan counties. On Thursday morning, the 11th inst., she left the house of her father-in-law in Gibson, dressed in man's clothes, with a double-barrel gun, for the purpose of shooting partridge, as she said. Shortly after, she was found dead about sixty rods from the house, a wound having penetrated through her skull. One barrel of the gun was discharged, and a string about a foot long was found tied around the guard of the triggers. The wound appeared to have been caused by a gun-shot entering behind near the right ear, and coming out near the right eye. From this fact, the Coroner's Jury did not believe that she could have shot herself, and gave a verdict that she came to her death by the hands of some person to them unknown. No physician having been present at the inquest, representation was made to Judge Pierpont of its illegality, and he ordered Under Sheriff Glover to procure a surgeon and proceed to hold a post mortem examination of the body. Accordingly the Sheriff, Doctor Balcom, and others, proceeded to the place on Tuesday last, and had the body exhumed. It was a terrible state of decomposition, having been buried but one or two feet below the surface, in a rickety box. Dr. Balcom, however, probed the wound, and concluded that death was caused immediately by a load of shot entering near her right eye. He also gave it as his opinion that the act was suicidal, as the positions of the gun and the body indicated it. Public opinion in the neighborhood is that she was shot by some other person, but we imagine that this feeling was created by the impression that the shot entered from behind, and that it was impossible for her to commit the act from that quarter. We think that such an opinion would not have prevailed had a physician been present at the inquest. Whether murder or suicide, there are but few, if any, who miss the unfortunate being. We have heard of no friends who mourn her untimely end. Manitowoc Pilot Friday, August 19, 1864 pg. 1

Plumb Becomes Benedict at Quiet Wedding Celebrated in Milwaukee Miss Blanche Dodge of Montello, the Wife of a Well Known Manitowoc Boy – Couple to Make this City their Home Happy mating, realization of heart's desire and a consummation to a romance which had its birth when the two were students at the University of Wisconsin, took place at a quiet wedding celebrated in Milwaukee last evening. Miss Blanche Dodge of Montello and Ralph G. Plumb of this city being principals to the marriage which ended in a triumphant culmination to a series of events that adequately voiced as a truism the old adage that “the course of true love never did run smooth”. The marriage was to have taken place at Montello, the home of the bride on June 15, but owning to circumstances which altered the first plans the large wedding celebration was postponed at that time and in its stead the quiet affair of Tuesday evening took place at the parlors of the Pfister Hotel, Milwaukee and only the families and witnesses to the event were present. Every feature of the ceremony and its attending function was perfect in detail and was the prettiest of events. Of the wedding at Hotel Pfister, the Milwaukee Sentinel says: “the appointment of the 'red room' where the ceremony took place, were all in keeping with the ideas of the bride; the table where the wedding banquet was sserved as a odel of the decorator's art and the bride herself in the magnificent wedding gown that had been designed for the wedding at Montello, which did not take place on June 15, was perhaps the crowning decorative feature of the room. “Promptly at 9 o'clock to the strains of the Mendelsohn wedding march, Miss Dodge, accompanied by Miss Ethel O'Connor, her bridesmaid, swept down the hallway to the red room. As she stood beneath the bower of roses, her tall figure and sparkling dark eyes formed a striking contrast to Miss O'Connor, the bridesmaid, who is a pretty blonde. “Miss Dodge wore a gown of creamm chiffon over taffeta with a hand embroidered net bertha and in her hand carried a bouquet of bride roses. She wore no veil and the style of her coiffure was high. Miss O'Connor, the bridesmaid wore a gown of brussel's net with spangles and lace trimming. Mr. Plumb was attended by his best man, Percival C. Peterson. The ceremonny, which was performed by the Rev. H.H. Jacobs was brief, the bride being given away by her father, E.J. Dodge. “At the conclusion of the ceremony, the wedding party sat down to a banquet at which covers were laid for twelve. In the center of the table was a large wedding cake surrounded by dark red roses, while streamers of white ribbon extended to the plate of each guest. Those who sat down to the banquet besides the bridal party were Mr. and Mrs. F.J. Dodge of Montello, Mrs. John Plumb, Manitowoc, Mrs. Richard O'Connor, Miss N. O'Connor and J.H. Turner of Milwaukee. Music was rendered by the orchestra during the banquet.” Mr. Plumb is a native of this city and has always made his home here where he has surrounded himself with a large circle of friends to whom the knowledge of his happiness will bring rejoicing. He is a young man possesssed of a bright mind and talents which he has used to good advantage and a graduate of the North Side high and the University of Wisconsin having won high honors in both institutions. Granted a degree from the law school of the University, he has been admitted to practice in the state courts but is not at present following the profession being associated with his father in the firm of Plumb & Nelson, wholesale grocers. He is the author of the “History of Manitowoc County” which has been recently appeared, a work that has been highly complimented for its literacy and historical merit. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F.J. Dodge of Montello and is a young lady of personal beauty who was a social leader of her house. Mr. and Mrs. Plumb will for the present make their home with Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Plumb. Manitowoc Daily Herald – Wed., July 13, 1904 ***** Ralph G. PLUTZ: Joseph After an illness of several years Mrs. Joseph Plutz died Monday, July 10, 1905, from heart failure, age 57 years. The deceased was born in Springerburg, Austria, June 1848 where she lived until the age of 20 when in company with her brother she left from America, making her home at Manitowoc. April 15, 1872 she was married to Joseph Plutz at Manitowoc which union was blessed with eight children, John, Joseph, Louis, Margaret, Henry, Frank, Mary and Barbara Plutz. Soon after her marriage she and her husband moved into the woods, onto the farm on which she lived the time of her death. She was well known in this community where her patient, toll and unwavering and faithful discharge of duty as wife, and mother and neighbor endeared her to everyone. She was devoted to her family and they in turn idolized her. Her sickness was a lingering one and her patient suffering and christian faith that all would be well was remarkable. The funeral took place Wednesday at West Holland, with interment in St. Francis cemetery, and was largely attended.

Huntley, C.E. Porter of Waukegan, Ill., and Miss Carrie R. Goodenow of Manitowoc. Fashionable circles of our village for some time past have been more than usually interested in anticipation of the wedding recorded above. The fact that the bride has grown up from childhood among us and is known and loved by all made the desire to attend her nuptials almost universal and no one was surprised to see the spacious appartments well filled with the gayest of the gat. The ceremony was performed precisely at nine o'clock in a short but impressive manner. The bride was indeed lovely and the beautifuul toiletts of the ladies gathered around, formed a very pleasing scene. Mrs. Porter received many valuable presents from her friends, and warm congratulations poured in on every hand. After this had all been attended to refreshments were the order of the hour, and the alacrity with which each one responded to the invitation to partake was good evidence of their excellence. It was quite late before the company had sufficiently enjoyed the social intercourse, music and other attractions of the evening, to take leave of their kind entertainers, but all such seasons must terminate and when this happy throng departed it was to store away in memory the recollection of time well and pleasantly spent. The happy couple will soon leave us for their home in our sister state. We hope that home will ever be one of unalloyed enjoyment and at the same time would express the conviction to our young friends that "--though absent They will never be forgotten." --The little imps of this institution request us to return thanks for the ample supply of wedding cake sent them. POSPIESEL: Joseph m: 29 July 1891 (co. mar. index v.6 p.107 to: Barbara Kellner POLICE AT BAY THEN KILLS SELF Former Manitowoc Man is a Suicide at Washington D.C. After holding the police at bay for six hours on Sunday, Joseph Pospiestel, an employee of the pension department at Washington D.C. and a former Manitowoc resident shot himself through the brain at that city, dispatch telling of his tragic death being contained in today's papers. Pospiesel labored under the delusion that an attempt was being made to murder him and in his condition he fired at pedestrians into the homes of his neighbors. When the police came he reloaded his pistol and fired upon them preventing their near approach to the house. Altogether he fired about fifty shots in this way, none of which, however took effect. Before arming himself, Pospiesel passed three of his small children through the second story window to persons in the adjoining house but his wife remained with him in an endeavor to quiet him. Becoming alarmed when he began to fire on the police, she left him and joined her children at the neighbors. At the time he shot himself, Pospiesel was sitting in the second story window of his home. He first rolled up his sleeve and injected cocaine into his arm to steady himself for the fatal shot. After firing he plunged forward to the ground and died on the way to the hospital. Dr. Pospiesel went to Washington eighteen years ago from this city, the family living near where the Luling school now stands. He, together with a brother, secured positions in the pension department. The family is well remembered here by older residents, the father being a rag and iron gatherer though the children were bright and above their home environment. Two of the girls secured teachers certificates at the ages of 16 and 17 respectively though they were not given permission to teach by John Nagle, then school superintendent because of their ages. There are relatives of the family still living in the county though both parents are said to be dead. John Pospiesel, a twin brother of the suicide is now living at Heineman, this state and both married Kellner sisters, daughter of Frank Kellner who formerly conducted saloons at Clarks Mills and on the Green Bay road. The parents after moving from this city lived with a daughter at Antigo. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Mon., June 8, 1908 ***** MANIACAL LAUGH HAUNTS ILL WIFE Mrs. Pospisiel, Mental and Physical Wreck, May Not Survive Husband TELLS STORY OF AWFUL SIX HOURS WITH MANIAC Recalls Terrible Scenes Preceding Self-Inflicted Death of Husband - Pospisiel Planned Visit This Fall Because she remembers the maniacal laugh of her husband and cannot blot from her mind the memory of his staring eyes while he held a crowd of 100 persons at bay before committing suicide, Mrs. Joseph Pospisiel, widow of the Manitowoc man who committed suicide at Washington D.C. Sunday and herself a Manitowoc girl, is in danger of losing her reason, says the Washington Times. During the six hours in which Pospisiel raved, shot at his friends and the police, his wife was in the room with him and as a result of the terrible ordeal through which she passed, she is a mental and physical wreck. Mrs. Pospisiel shudders when those about her raise their voices and the slightest noise makes her hysterical. She is being closely guarded and cared for at the hospital. Pospisiel labored under the delusion that members of the Maccabee Order, in which he was affiliated had planned his death, a delusion which seized him Thursday four days previous to his tragic death. Returning form the government pension office where he held an $1800 position that day. He told his wife of his fears and from that time until his self inflicted end, he was never freed of the fear that bound him. On Friday he secured the revolver and fifty cartridges with which he attempted the deadly distraction of Sunday. "Gradually, trembling, weeping, Mrs. Pospisiel told the story of the six awful hours she spent with her mad husband just before his death, to the police, told of his first fear, of his pleading to his wife and children to pray for him and recalled the scene when, with her three children, she knelt at the bedside to ask protection and satisfy the maddened man, told of the scenes leading up to the terrible end, of passing her children through a second story window to a neighbor to save them from their father, of her efforts to quiet the maniac and have him summon friends and finally with the knowledge forced upon her that nothing could save him, of leaving the little room through the same window she had passed her children a few hours before. Mrs. Pospisiel's last sight of her husband was when she saw him barricade the stairway and fire at the police in the hall below and her memory recalls the maniacal laugh which she says will haunt her for life. Dr. Pospisiel, formerly a dentist, planned to visit Manitowoc this fall, having discussed the trip with Joseph Jirikowic, a former resident here, at Washington, only a week before his suicide. The two intended to make the journey together and to remain here for a stay during the holidays. Pospisiel was a companionable man, well-liked and highly thought of in Washington and was an active participant in the social gatherings of former Wisconsin people. He was prominent in fraternal circles as a member of the Maccabees and Odd Fellows and the funeral was in charge of these organizations. John Pospisiel, a brother, is in Washington to settle the affairs of the dead man. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Thurs., June 11, 1908

Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs., Jan. 4, 1923 ***** Personal: Dr. and Mrs. Pritchard celebrated their silver wedding on the evening of January 1. Quite a number of invited guests were present. When invitations were extended the fact that it was a silver wedding was carefully concealed, and for this reason invitations were issued late. But the fact leaked out. Manitowoc Pilot, Wis., Thursday, January 6, 1898 pg. 3 ***** 50th Anniversary of Dr. & Mrs. Pritchard Dr. and Mrs. J. F. Pritchard celebrated the golden anniversary of their wedding New Year's Day. There was a family reunion and open house all day. The large home at Park & Eighth Streets was thronged with friends calling to offer congratulations all day and far into the night. The wedding ceremony was performed January 1, 1873 at the home of Mrs. Pritchard's aunt which occupied the site of the present Knights of Columbus clubhouse at York and Ninth Streets. The bride was the daughter of Socrates Hill and was born in this city April 6, 1852. Dr. Pritchard was born at Norwich, Ontario, Canada, July 22, 1846. He graduated from Toronto University and later from Rush Medical college in 1869 and has been engaged in practice here since 1872, although in semi-retirement for several years, attending mainly only old patients who will not permit him to quit entirely. For many years he held high positions on the railway surgical staffs of both the Chicago & Northwestern railway and the Soo Line and years ago served as President of the Wisconsin Medical Society. Prominent for years as a physician and surgeon, the doctor has been markedly successful as a big businessman and was early independent of his practice as a means of livelihood but continued to toil at it in trust. Mrs. Pritchard is descended on both sides from early New England stock and is a genuine Mayflower descendent. Dr. and Mrs. Pritchard are parents of four children, all of whom were at home for the golden jubilee anniversary of their parents. They are: Mrs. D.C. Jones of Neenah, Mrs. A. O. Nash of this city, Mrs. R.H. Hubbell of Oak park, Ill., and John Franklin Pritchard of Kansas City, Mo. Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs., Jan. 4, 1923 ***** Golden Wedding Anniversary of Dr. and Mrs. Pritchard to be Quietly Celebrated on New Year Day Open house will be held at the home of Dr. and Mrs. J.F. Pritchard, North Eighth street Monday afternoon when the worthy couple, pioneer residents of the city, will observe the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding day - completion of a half century of companionship that has been ideally happy and during which Dr. and Mrs. Pritchard have won the esteem of the community which has been their home. Although the golden jubilee is not planned as an occasion for elaborate celebration Dr. and Mrs. Pritchard will welcome their friends and will receive congratulations and well wishes from a host of admirers. A family reunion of the four children of the couple and ten grandchildren will be one of the happy events of the day. Couple Married Here The marriage of John Frederick Pritchard and Emily Hill was solemnized at the home of Mary Underwood Hill Fellows, which occupied the site of the present club house of the Knights of Columbus, on January 1, 1873. The bride was a daughter of Socrates Hill, an early resident of the city, and was born April 6, 1852 in this city, and after the death of her father made her home with her aunt. Dr. and Mrs. Pritchard have been residents of this city since the date of their marriage. Dr. Pritchard is a native of Norwich, Ontario, Canada, having been born there July 22, 1846. He attended Toronto university to prepare for a medical course and later went to Chicago where he graduated from Rush Medical college in 1869. Dr. Pritchard located at Oakfield, near Fond du Lac in practice as a physician and surgeon, and in 1872 came to this city, where he has since been engaged in practice, although not active in more recent years. Shortly after locating here Dr. Pritchard was appointed chief surgeon of the Milwaukee Lake Shore & Western Railway company and served until the road was absorbed by the Chicago North Western. He also served as division surgeon for the Chicago North Western and for the Wisconsin Central and Soo Line railway companies. Dr. Pritchard has been prominent in state medical circles, serving as president of the Wisconsin State Medical society for one term. Interested in Business Business affairs, outside of his profession proved attractive to Dr. Pritchard and he has been interested and active in a number of lines of business. Twenty- five years ago he joined with H.F. Whitcomb, now a retired capitalist at Milwaukee and former head of the Wisconsin Railway company, in organization of what later became known as the Eastern Wisconsin Railway & Light company. Originally the holding of Messrs. Pritchard and Whitcomb included the electric light plant and gas works at Fond Du Lac, which were rebuilt and enlarged by them and to which was later added a street railway and interurban line to Oshkosh. The company had a healthy growth and later absorbed the Oshkosh street railway and other properties, continuing in business with the original founders until 1917, when both Dr. Pritchard and Mr. Whitcomb disposed of their interests. Headed Masonic Chapter Dr. Pritchard, who joined the Masonic order at Oakfield in 1869, became a member of Manitowoco lodge, No. 65, in 1872, and was one of the organizers of Manitowoc Chapter, No. 16, Royal Arch Masons, of which he was the head for nearly twenty years. Dr. Pritchard became a Knight Templar at Milwaukee, but transferred his membership to the Manitowoc Commandery when it was organized a year ago. Wife Mayflower Descendant Mrs. Pritchard is a descendant of the early settlers of New England through both her father and mother. One of her ancestors was a member of the party which came to America on the Mayflower and Mrs. Pritchard is a member of the Society of Mayflower descendants and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Parents of Four Children Dr. and Mrs. Pritchard are parents of four children, all of whom will be at home for the golden jubilee anniversary of their parents. They are: Mrs. D.C.
