Mills, dau. of Judge J.T. Mills, of Grant Co., WI Children: Jean H. Joseph Mills City and County: Judge and Mrs. J.S. Anderson celebrated their silver wedding on Monday last. Manitowoc Pilot, Wis., Thursday, July 21, 1898 pg. 3 ***** From the Files of the Pilot – Forty-Four Years Ago – (1873) Married Anderson-Mills On Tuesday, the 17th inst., at the residence of J. F. Mills, the bride's father, in Lancaster, Grant Co., Wis., by the Rev. A.D. Dexter, Mr. J. S. Anderson of this city to Miss Eva M. Mills. Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs. July 26, 1917 ***** 50th Anniversary of Judge J.S. And Mrs. Anderson Married Fifty Years Judge and Mrs. J.S. Anderson celebrated their golden anniversary Tuesday with an open house at their home on North Fifty Street. The house was thronged afternoon and evening by their numerous friends anxious to congratulate the Judge and his bride of fifty years and to express the esteem in which they are held by the community where they have passed the greater part of well spent lives. Judge Anderson has lived in the county since 1852 and in the city since 1855. He still has faint recollections of his native Glasgow which he left as a younger child. He went out with the first company to leave the county in 1861 and served in the east till incapacitated by wounds and sickness brought on by the Wilderness Campaign in 1864. Although he has been a soldier, writer, lecturer, legislator, editor and served for a time as county judge, it is as a lawyer and a learned and thorough lawyer, that he is best known. To him his profession was only less sacred than his country. He is not a showy man but he knows the law. With him “common law is common sense”. He is the level headed, high minded American. Froom the time of his admission to the bar in 1871 until he gradually withdrew into semi-retirement a few years ago, he was a powerful, outstanding figure at the local bar. The cases he handled in appeal to the Supreme Court run from Vol. 37 of the Wisconsin Reports in 1875 to Vol. 143 in 1910. Mrs. Anderson is a daughter of the late Judge J.T. Mills, a member of a prominent early Kentucky family who was a circuit judge and leading lawyer in southwestern Wisconsin in the early days. The Judge and Mrs. Anderson were at Lawrence college together, one in the class of '67 and the other in the class of '68 and up to the time of their marriage in 1873, Mrs. Anderson held a chair on the faculty of the Plattville Normal School. Here was an ideal home circle. Both were real scholars in the best sense of that abused word and without a trace of pedantry. Their reading was wide. Their affinity included the intellectual. They possess the culture of good blood, good breeding, active intellect, industry and lives rightly lived. The Judge has never permitted his mastery of the classics in the original to grow rusty and he has kept his knowledge of modern language freshly reading their current literature. Mrs. Anderson was a prime mover for many decades in the intellectual life of the city and founded the Clio club. They have one daughter and one son, Miss Jean Anderson, a teacher of Latin at the Manitowoc high School and J. Mills Anderson, whose home is at Watts, a suburb of Los Angeles, Calif. He is a civil engineer. There are also five grandchildren. The Pilot can do no better than to say to both what Judge Michael Kirwin said to Judge Anderson of two years ago on the occasion of a banquet given by the local Bar Association to celebrate the semi-centennial of Judge Anderson's admission to the bar. “We assure him of our regard and our affections and we hope that for many years to come will be able to pursue his reading and study in his own quiet and judicious way and enjoy a state of dignified leisure to the end.” Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs., July 19, 1923

October 1902 bids fair to be a record breaker in the business of the marriage license bureau at the county clerk's office and is furnishing a good harvest for ministers and justices. To date a total of twenty-three licenses have been given out, not including two special dispensations that have been issued by probate court and if the same ratio is continued to the end of the month, the license business will exceed that of the same month in previous years since the law has been in effect. Friday three licenses were issued, the couples bent on enjoying connubiality being Carl Mieser and Clara Backhaus, Rapids; George Eckellenann (sic) and Katherine Landau, Schleswig and William Anhalt and Helene Bersch, Kiel. The marriages will take place next week. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Saturday, October 18, 1902 P.1

AND MRS. F.X. AUMANN, WEDDED FIFTY YEARS YESTERDAY, AND CHILDREN PLAN CELEBRATION OF THE EVENT BOTH MR. AND MRS. AUMAN RESIDENTS HERE SIXTY YEARS Yesterday, December 3, marked the fiftieth anniversary of the wedding day of Mr. and Mrs. Frank X. Auman, pioneer residents of the city and relatives and friends made the occasion one long to be remembered by the couple who were surprised at their home at Nineteenth and Franklin streets. A pure(?) of gold was presented to the couple. Mr. and Mrs. Auman were parents of twelve children, nine surviving, eight sons and one daughter and they were all present for the occasion, together with two grandchildren and one great grandchild. The children are Gustave, Frank, William, Max, Joseph, Louis, Walter, Edward, of this city and Mrs. George Jorsch of Wittenberg. The marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Auman was solemnized in this city where both have been residents for nearly sixty years, Mr. Auman having come here as a boy of six and his wife as a girl. For twenty five years Mr. Auman was an employee of the Goodrich Transit Company at the local yards and about nine years ago met with an accident which resulted in the loss of one of his hands. Mr. Auman is a native of Bavaria and his wife was born in Germany, both having come to America with their parents in their childhood days, Mrs. Auman having been nine years old upon arrival here. The couple had planned no celebration of the golden wedding anniversary but relatives arranged a surprise party and invaded the home in numbers. Decorations of golden chrysanthemums and other flowers sent the couple graced the home. During the evening the Marine band of which two sons of the couple, William and Joseph, are members, serenaded the bride and groom of fifty years ago and were invited to partake of the supper which was served. Mr. and Mrs. Auman are well known and have a large circle of friends who join in tendering congratulations and the wish that the couple may be spared to celebrate their diamond anniversary.
