AMBROSE EBERLE In Loving Memory of Village Head of St. Nazianz Dies at Home Ambrose Eberle Was Supervisor Past 22 Years St. Nazianz- Ambrose Eberle, 64, civic leader and first president of the village of St. Nazianz, collapsed in his garden at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and died before aid reached him. He had been working in the garden when Miss Luanne Madson, neighboring high school student, saw him fall. She immediately went for help but Eberle was dead by the time men from the neighborhood picked him up and carried him into the house. Although he had suffered a slight heart attack some time ago he apparently was in good health to the time of the seizure. A member of the Manitowoc County Board for the past 22 1/2 years, he had been chairman of the Town of Eaton for 21 years prior to the incorp- oration of the village of St. Nazianz. He was chairman of the Lions committee that investigated and sponsored the incorporation of the village and for his untiring efforts was not only elected first president of the village but was reelected this year. He had also served as the town clerk for 5 years, was chairman of the Manitowoc County Highway Committee for 15 years, was chief ranger for the St. Nazianz chapter of the Catholic Order of Foresters for many years and was assistant cashier of the St. Nazianz State Bank. He was chairman of the building committee for the present St. Gregory Community Center and was on the committee for the diamond jubilee of the village and again for the centennial. At the recent Home show sponsored by the Lions Club, Eberle, then vice president, fried sausages at the club stand for a straight eight hour period. His death is the second within a month involving a county board member. Charles Wenzel, representing the village of Reedsville died in a Green Bay hospital recently of injuries suffered in an automobile accident in Brillion. The village board of St. Nazianz will meet Monday night in emergency session to draft a message of condolence and proclaim a business holiday the morning of the Eberle funeral. The board is expected to make an announcement on replacement shortly. Funeral Wednesday Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Gregory Catholic Church when the Rev. JOHN ENDRIES (d. 1957) John Endries Drowns When Truck Breaks Through Ice John Endries, 55, was drowned Thursday afternoon in Pigeon Lake near Valders, when his truck loaded with sand broke through the ice and sank to the bottom. Endries was trapped in the cab of the truck. He was hauling sand and gravel for cottage owners at the lake. The sand settles to the bottom when the ice melts and makes a better swimming beach. His truck broke through about 50 feet from the south shore of the lake. The truck settled on its tailgate with just the tips of the front fender showing above the ice. Rescue operations were complicated by the large chunks of ice floating in the hole. Edward Dyzbalys, owner of a resort on the lake, used a ladder and grapple hooks, to remove the ice. He was then able to break the windshield with an ice chisel. Merlin Wiesner and two sons of the deceased also helped with the recovery of the body. The first alarm was called in by Mrs. Frieda Green, who lives in a cottage near the scene of the accident. Mrs. Green said that she heard the Endries truck coming with the last load and went out to warn him of a “soft spot” in the ice. But his truck had already plunged beneath the surface before she could give the warning. She fainted. When she recovered she called Dyzbalys. Mrs. Green was highly excited and somewhat incoherent concerning the “soft spot in the ice.” Mrs. Dyzbalys, however explained that while visiting at Green’s earlier in the week she had noticed an open spot and was told that a load of sand and gravel dumped there had melted through the ice and dropped to the bottom. Surface of the ice in the immediate area was of a shell-like quality which broke under the normal weight of the rescue party, but was supported by some 20 inches of ice underneath the shell. Gravel dropping through the ice in any volume would have forced water onto the snow already on the ice forming the surface crust. Tracks of the truck leading to the hole showed it had been breaking through a progressively deeper crust for from six to 10 feet before the final plunge. Two days of freezing weather and a light snowfall had masked the spot making it look like the rest of the lake surface. Endries’ wife told authorities that her husband had stopped at home and she had had a cup of coffee with him about 15 minutes before the accident. According to Coroner Dr. Theodore Teitgen it was learned that Endries had broken through the ice on Cedar Lake in the town of Schleswig last year while simllarly spreading gravel on the ice, but had jumped clear of the truck at that time. Funeral Monday Funeral services were held Monday at St. Gregory’s Catholic church at St. Nazianz, the Rev. Denis Cooney officiating. Burial was made in the church cemetery Mr. Endries was born September 17, 1901, on the homestead farm, son of the late John and Mary Gelling Endries. September 29, 1928, he married the former Rose Burkart of St. Nazianz. They had three sons, two of whom died. After the death of his wife April 15, 1931, he married the former Rose Woelfel of St. Nazianz. Together with his sons he ran the feed mill and a trucking business in St. Nazianz, besides operating the farm. He was a member of the Holy Name society of St., Gregory’s church and was a director of the National Farm Loan association of Green Bay. While her death was not unexpected, her friends and relatives entertained the hope for some time that her condition was improving and that she would be spared to her little family but their hopes were shattered as the condition of her health grew rapidly worse during the past few weeks. She was born here 26 years ago and spent all of her life in this vicinity, having attended the local school and being well known among the young people of the community. On June 5, 1923, she was united in marriage to John Endries, Jr., and with him established their home a few miles south of the village. Three children were born to this union, of whom two little boys, aged 3 and 4 years survive, the third having died a few months ago. JAKOB FONDENBERGER Fondenberger, Dr. Jacob (Jacob was born at Kleinerdingungen in the Alsace-Lorraine of what today is a part of France -the Alsace-Lorraine region has gone back and forth between Germany and France a number of times -when Jacob was born in 1823 it was then a part of France and, thus, he has a claim to being French -after the Franco-Prussian War, the Alsace-Lorraine (at least the dominantly German speaking part of that region) was annexed to the German Empire -after the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, ending World War One, it was given back to France and remains there today -it seems that though Jacob likely came from German heritage, he preferred to consider himself French, even going so far as to have his name pronounced "Fon den ber shay") (Sept. 26, 1823-Dec. 6, 1890 -husband of Katherine Gerber [married in New Orleans, Louisiana -Katherine had come over from Europe with Jacob in the 1850's] -Katherine and a son George died from yellow fever in New Orleans -it seems a son named Louis survived from this first marriage -he was born in New Orleans and on the 1870 census from St. Louis is shown as living with his father and stepmother -after the death of Katherine, Jacob re-married to Elizabeth Kessel [married Oct. 14, 1853 in New Orleans, Louisiana] -Elizabeth Kessel was born in 1832, came from Baden and was familiar with Fr. Ambrose Oschwald and his colony in St. Nazianz -her parents were Wendelin Kessel and Gertrude Busch -after 1858 Jacob and Elizabeth moved to St. Louis, where Elizabeth died from cholera on July 31, 1873 -she was buried at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in St. Louis -just before this she had lost her nearly 16 year old daughter, Anna Mary Fondenberger, to cholera on July 30, 1873] -born in Pepitreddercheng [also shown at times as "Petitritterking"], Alsace-Lorraine -son of Jacob Fondenberger with mother unknown -medical doctor and dentist [one of Jacob's patients in St. Louis was Peter Mutz, who was diagnosed with cancer -Jacob recommended Peter Mutz seek treatment from Fr. Oschwald in St. Nazianz -Peter Mutz went on to become the successor of Fr. Oschwald at the St. Nazianz Colony] -"Dr. Jacques Fondenberger later received a letter asking him to come to St. Nazianz because they had no doctor or dentist. He traveled there with his two remaining children, Elizabeth and Magdalena and gave a considerable amount of money to the nuns at the orphanage to take care of his girls. While the girls were being cared for in the orphanage in St. Nazianz, Jacques lived in the priest house [the lower level of the original St. Gregory Church, which had been the living quarter of Fr. Oschwald] in St. Nazianz and practiced his profession." -this was in 1873, shortly after the death of Fr. Oschwald -born Klemerdinginger, Baden -died from "paralysis") -buried at St. Gregory Catholic Cemetery in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton [likely buried in Section 1, Row 9, Lot 18 -no stone -in 2019 the St. Nazianz Area Historical Society placed a marker on this grave -there is a marker for Jacob in Old Section 1, Row 9, Lot 6] [first marriage record Louisiana] [second marriage record Louisiana] [death record Manitowoc 4-126]
