Mr. and Mrs. Matthias Feile were pleasantly surprise by their children, neighbors and friends at their home on upper Fourth Street on the occasion of the completion of fifty years of their married life. The Frauenverein of St. Peter's Reformed Church and the choir of that body appeared in the evening and gave them a charivari. The members of the choir, of which Mrs. Feile is a member, made a longer stay and rendered several songs. Rev. Rech, who was present, made a few appropriate remarks on the occasion which were well received. Two poems, composed by members of the Verein were also read. Music and social entertainment filled out the remainder of the evening. Refreshments and a fine lunch were served. The parlor and sitting room were prettily decorated in green, white, pink and gold tinsel and a beautiful bouquet of asters and other flowers presented by Mr. A. Kazmaier deserves special mention. The trees in front of the house were electrically lighted making a pretty appearance. Mr. and Mrs. Mathias Feile number among our old time and respected citizens, having been residents here since 1870. Mr. Feile was born in Wittenberg, Swabia, Germany December 17, 1848 and came to America when seven years old and with his parents, who first settled in Germantown, Wis. They later moved to the Town of Schleswig in the vicinity of Kiel where Mr. Feile grew to manhood. In 1870 he was united in marriage to Anna, daughter of Reimer Edens of New Holstein and the couple settled on the farm of Mr. Feile's parents. Fifteen years ago they disposed of the farm to their son, Rudolph and moved to Kiel where they have since resided. Mr. and Mrs. Feile were the parents of eleven children of whom four have passed away. Four sons and three daughters are living as follows: Robert of Reedsville; Rudolph of Kiel; Henry of Manitowoc; William of Pittsburg; Mrs. Chr. Arnold of Kiel; Mrs. H.J. Duecker of the Town of New Holstein and Mrs. Geo. Reineck, residing near Appleton. Mr. Feile is 71 and his wife, who is a native of Holstein, Germany is 67 years of age. Both are still hale and hearty and their many friends hope that it may be their privilege to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary. The Record joins the many friends and relatives of the couple in offering congratulations. Mr. and Mrs. Feile wish to thank the Frauenverein, the choir and the neighbors for the great honor they bestowed upon them in arranging this celebration. With the shadow of a prison cell, with love undaunted and true to a promise made before adverse circumstances had worked their spell to make George Ferris an outcast. Miss Grace Huffner, a pretty Manitowoc girl Sunday night braved the criticism of the world and swore lifelong fidelity to the man of her choice. The marriage was performed in the corridor of the jail and was witnessed by only a few of the immediate relative of the bride. After the ceremony Ferris was taken back to his cell to await the action of the court in sentence upon conviction of robbery while the bride returned home with her parents to remain until such time as freedom shall restore her to the arms of her husband. Ferris, who originally came from Ohio, won the promise of his bride months ago and the wedding day was set for an early date. His arrest, upon a charge of hold-up, interfered with the plans, but the love of the girl remained true, and even after his conviction, she expressed a wish to keep her promise and the marriage took place. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Monday, June 17, 1901, p. 1 ********* Two years at the Green Bay reformatory is the sentence which Judge Kirwan this afternoon imposed upon George Ferris, convicted of robbery from the person of Henry Cordes, a Cooperstown man. The case was tried in Circuit Court last week and the jury returned a verdict of guilty. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Monday, June 17, 1901, p. 1
