ADOLPH ZANDER (d. 1915) cemetery #44 MEETS DEATH ON SPOT WHERE AS BOY HE PLAYED ADOLPH ZANDER INSTANTLY KILLED AT BOILER WORKS PLANT TODAY WHEN STRUCK BY ARM OF BIG CRANE NO ONE WITNESSED ACCIDENT. WAS 53 Adolph Zander, employed at the shops of the Manitowoc Boiler Works met death this morning on the spot which years ago was the site of his father’s mill and where as a lad he had played, Mr. Zander being killed instantly by a blow from the heavy arm of the crane operated at the shops. The man was dead when fellow workmen reached his side, his body having been crushed by the blow. No one witnessed the accident, the engineer in charge of the crane investigating when he felt the jar which resulted when the arm hit Zander’s body. Physicians were hurriedly summoned but Zander was pronounced dead. Mr. Zander, who was employed as a pattern maker and carpenter at the Boiler Works and had been in employ of the company for a number of years, was at work nailing scaffolding on the crane, his body laying across the runway of the structure while he was attempting to nail supports under the runway. No one knew that the man was on the runway and it is said that Zander had no business on the runway and that he should have raised a ladder under the structure in performing the work he was doing, which would have obviated any chances of accident. Employees of the plant say that Zander failed to obey the “safety first” rules of the company. Mr. Zander’s body was terribly crushed by the heavy steel arm, one side of the body being torn and lacerated. Death, according to physician, resulted instantly. A statement given out by the Boiler Works Co. today relative to the accident was as follows: “Mr. A. Zander, pattern maker and millwright at the Manitowoc Boiler Works Company met with an accident about ten o’clock this morning which resulted in death. Mr. Zander was in the act of building a scaffolding underneath the runway and was nailing a two by four post on runway. Instead of using a ladder or notifying the crane man he leaned over the crane track of runway. No doubt he thought he could drive his four or five nails and get away in safety. The crane operator not knowing Mr. Zander was there started the crane and it struck him.” Mr. Zander was a native of Two Rivers and was 53 years of age. He had resided here most of his life. A widow and four children survive, Mrs. Henry Schweda, Miss Asta, Adolph and Louis Zander, all of this city. An aged father, one brother Edward Zander and a sister, Mrs. Frank Kautsky also survive. The shock of Mr. Zander’s death may hasten the demise of his father who makes his home with his daughter, Mrs. Kautsky and who is reported to be in very feeble health and near death. The body of Mr. Zander was taken to the C. & W. Frazier undertaking rooms and later removed to the home at 820 York street. Funeral arrangements have not been made but the burial will probably be Thursday afternoon. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Tuesday, November 09, 1915, Page 1 ******** FUNERAL OF ADOLPH ZANDER TO BE HELD FROM CHURCH FRIDAY The funeral of Adolph Zander, killed in an accident at the Boiler Works plant yesterday, will be held from the home to the Presbyterian church Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock with interment at Evergreen. COURT UPHOLDS 15 PER CENT PENALTY AWARD ON LOCAL CONCERN, ZANDER DEATH Court Rules that Contributary Negligence Does Not Affect Powers of Industrial Commission in Right to Impose Additional Penalty for Failure to Obey Commission Order In a decision handed down Saturday in the Dane county circuit court in the appeal from the award of the Industrial commission to Mrs. Bertha Zander against the Boiler Works company, for the death of her husband, Adolph Zander, the court upheld the commission's award and ruled that Mrs. Zander was entitled to 15 per cent additional on the award as penalty against the Boiler Works company for failure to properly protect the machinery as ordered by the commission. Under the decision Mrs. Zander will receive about $400 increase on the usual award of $3,000 for death. Zander was killed while at work on a crane at the plant of the Boiler Works company and insurance companies made no contest on allowance of the award for death. The commission, however, added 15 per cent to the amount as penalty because, it said, the company had failed to obey an order of the commission, of properly safeguarding of the crane. The commission had ordred that the crane at the plant be protected by a device similar to a street car fender but it is claimed that this was impossible and the insurance company set up this in its appeal to the court from the 15 percent penalty award. The law provides that where orders of the commission are not carried out a penalty may be imposed and the court upheld this feature of the law. It was also argued in the case that Zander was guilty of contributory negligence but the court holds that negligence on one hand or contributory negligence on the other has no bearing on the question of the power of the Industrial commission to assess a 15 per cent penalty in addition to compensation for injury. Zander, city clerk here for the past 20 years, died suddenly shortly after retiring Monday night, following his return from a special meeting of the City Council. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon from the Masonic Temple." Arthur Zander, City Clerk for 20 Years, Dies of Heart Attack Succumbs In Bed Shortly After Attendin a Council Session (Photo) Arthur H. Zander, 68, city clerk here since 1918 and prominent in fraternal and civic life of Manitowoc, died suddenly of a heart attack at his home Monday evening an hour after he returned from a special meeting of the City Council. Mr. Zander continued active until the end. He was at his duties at his office in the city hall Monday and took the minutes of the special meeting of the aldermen last night. Before the meeting, while conversing with City Attorney Edward Meyer he complained that he had suffered a slight pain in his chest a few days before but said it had passed over. Funeral Thursday He retired soon after reaching his home, 1718 Michigan avenue last night. His wife, noticing his heavy breathing shortly after 11 o'clock, sought to arouse him. When he did not respond she called other members of the family and a physician. He died a few minutes after the arrival of the doctor. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Masonic Temple under Masonic auspices. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. Mr. Zander, born at Zander in the town of Gibson in 1869, followed successively the positions of school teacher, post office clerk, county official, weekly newspaper publisher, salesman and city clerk. At the age of 16 he taught school at Neshoto, Manitowoc county. In 1888 he had the urge to go west and located in Tacoma, Wash., when that bustling western city was growing. He was employed as a clerk in the post office. He returned to Mishicot after four years, then located at Hika (Centerville), where he again taught school for four years. Filled County Vacancy In 1899 when an incumbent in the office of county clerk died, the county board chose Mr. Zander for the vacancy. He served out the remainder of the two year term but did not choose to run for the office again. Instead he became asociated with Sydney T. Pratt in operation of the Manitowoc Pilot, a weekly newspaper and job printing plant on York street. Mr. Zander next entered the employ of the Schmidtmann Sons company as a traveling salesman. After a few years with this company he joined the sales force of the Ziegler Candy company, Milwaukee. He was with this company 18 years. On September 9, 1918, when Walter C. Staeffler resigned as city clerk to enter the navy during the World war, the city council unanimously chose Mr. Zander to succeed him. He was re-named to this important post each successive year. Last May he was elected to a two-year term. The new charter provision now calls for the clerk to be elected for two years instead of one. An Ardent Sportsman Mr. Zander was an ardent sportsman and prominent for years in activities of the local chapter of the Izaak Walton leauge. He was on the special committee that put over the Centerville dam project, which created a man made lake and beauty spot 18 miles south of Manitowoc along the lake shore. Close to $5,000 was raised by Waltonians through a series of picnics held at Centerville. Despite the many duties which the city clerk's office entails, Mr. Zander made trout fishing his hobby. He could alsways find time to snatch a moment to discuss a particular trout stream where he was sure there would be a worthwhile catch waiting. As the business of the city increased the clerk's office became more and more the center of activity. Councilmen sought his advice and counsel in matters of legislation and procedure, and his (continued on Page 2, Col. 4) Page 2 CITY CLERK DIES OF HEART ATTACK (Continured from page 1) long years of service in the office gave him a fund of knowledge on city affairs that was a great aid during every change of administration. Married In 1893 He was a past president of the Kiwanis club and a member of the Masons, the Untied Commercial Travelers and the Presbyterian Men's club. He was vice-president and director of the Manitowoc Building and Loan association. In 1893 Mr. Zander married Miss Tillie Levenhagen at Mishicot. LOUISE ZANDER cemetery #44 REPORT BRIDGE WAS DARK WHEN 3 WERE KILLED That the fatal accident at Sturgeon Bay Wednesday night in which Miss Louise Zander of this city and two others lost their lives was due to the fact that the lights on the bridge were not in working order, is the belief of Edward Burns and Henry Schweda, brothers-in-law of Miss Zander, who returned from Sturgeon Bay last night, accompanying the body of the girl. A woman and two boys who are said to have witnessed the accident, declared that the light was not burning. The body of Miss Zander was taken to the Burns home on So. Eighth street and the funeral will be held Monday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Boniface church, with interment at Evergreen cemetery where the father of the unfortunate victim of the tragedy is buried. According to information secured by Mesrs. Burns and Schweda at Sturgeon Bay the three occupants of the car were thrown across the electric wires by the collision of the car with the bridge railing, which permitted the wheels on one side of the car to go off the bridge. When found the three bodies were resting with heads on the wires and feet in the automobile. Miss Zander's body had no mark, except for a groove on the chin where the wire had rested as the current killed her. Both Miss Zander and Mr. Delwich were still alive when they were lifted from the wire and car but the girl died before reaching the hospital and Delwich a few minutes after arrival. The Dendil lad was dead when found. Manitowoc Herald News, Manitowoc, Wis. November 19, 1920 P. 1 ********* [bur 11-22-1920/age 26 yrs/cause: electrocuted-accident/bur on Adolph Zander lot]

FERDINAND ZASTROW cemetery #82 KIEL OFFICIAL DIES President F. Zastrow Suddenly Succumbs At The Krueger Picnic on Sunday Last DEATH WAS DUE TO HEART DISEASE Was a Member of the Manitowoc County Board of Supervisors for Many Years and President of Village The festivities of the German War Veterans at Kiel were marred on Sunday afternoon last by the sudden death of Ferdinand Zastrow, president of the village and prominent citizen of the town. Members of the Krueger Verein from Kiel, Sheboygan. Manitowoc and Plymouth met for their annual picnic at Meyer’s Park in the village and all were in the best of spirits until this sad and unfortunate death occurred. Addresses had been made by Max Hottellot of Milwaukee and Gustave Guenther of Chilton which were followed by Mr. Zastrow, who in the best of spirits, welcomed the visitors to the town. He seemed in the best of health and made a splendid impression on his hearers. When he completed his speech he stepped from the platform and mingled with the large crowed for a short time and then joined the singing society of which he was a member. They sang one song and as they began another Mr. Zastrow faltered, dropped his book from his hand and then fell dead. Physicians were summoned at once, but he was past all medical aid. A peculiar coincidence is that the deceased wife of Mr. Zastrow met her death exactly under similar circumstances in 1901. It was the occasion of a big saengerfest at Kiel and she was stricken with heart failure while working in the kitchen and dropped over dead. There are no other known relatives. For the past three years Mr. Zastrow has been president of the village. Prior to that time he was chairman of the town of Schleswig and of the village of Kiel, representing these two until in the county board of supervisors for several years. In politics he was a democrat. The deceased was a member of the Kiel lodge of Oddfellows who had charge of the funeral which took place Wednesday afternoon. Chilton, Wis., Saturday, August 13, 1910
