CHRIST H. TEGEN cemetery #44 C.H. TEGEN, ARCHITECT, AND BUILDER OF COUNTY’S NEW COURT HOUSE DIES TODAY IN HOSPITAL Death of Mr. Tegen Occurs Just Twelve Weeks to Day, from that of His Wife. Is Last of Men Identified with Building of Court House a Few Years Ago Christian H. Tegen, well known architect and builder of the new Manitowoc county court house, passed away at the Holy Family Hospital at 5 o’clock this morning, Mr. Tegen’s death occurring just 12 weeks to a day after that of his wife who passed away on December 23. News of the death of Mr. Tegen was not unexpected as for some time past his condition had been such as to afford no hope of recovery. He was removed to the hospital ten days ago from the home of his daughter, Mrs. J.J. Healy, where he had been cared for following the death of Mrs. Tegen. His condition had grown steadily worse and early this morning the end came. Mr. Tegen was 63 years of age and had been a resident of this city for over twenty years. He was born in Hamburg, Germany, and came to Wisconsin thirty five years ago, residing at Milwaukee before locating in this city. For years, Mr. Tegen was engaged in business as an architect and super- intended the erection of many business buildings and homes in the city, the new court house and the addition to the present Teitgen block being among the important contracts which he directed. Owing to failing health Mr. Tegen retired about a year ago and since that time had been an invalid. Three months ago Mrs. Tegen became ill and died shortly after being taken to the hospital, her life being sacrificed to care of her husband during his illness. Mr. Tegen is survived by three children, Mrs. J.J. Healy and Miss Paula Tegen, of this city and one son, Robert Tegen, of Portland, Ore. Decedent was a member of the Elks lodge and the funeral Monday from the Healy home on Marshall street will be under the auspices of the local lodge of Elks. Few men of the city were better known than Mr. Tegen and he enjoyed popularity among a large circle of friends to whom he was familiarly known as “Chris.” The death of Mr. Tegen removes the last of those identified with building of the new courthouse ten years ago, every member of the building committee having passed away. FRITZ TEGGE COMMITTED SUICIDE. Fred Tegge, of Two Rivers takes His Life By Jumping in the River. HIS HAT AND COAT FOUND. Left His Home Last Evening has not Been Seen Since. The River is Being Dragged for his Body. Fred Tegge, of Two Rivers, is supposed to have committed suicide by jumping into the river at that place last evening. He was about the house as usual yesterday afternoon. At supper time his wife called him to supper. He responded by telling her that he had had enough to eat, and immediately left the house, and that is the last seen of him. This morning a hat and coat found on the scow Rosa, were identified by Mrs. Tegge as those of her husband. The life saving crew have been dragging the river all day, but to four o'clock this evening had not succeeded in finding the body. His wife can give no cause for her husband's rash act. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Manitowoc, Wis. Thursday, November 3, 1898 P. 1 *********** BODY NOT FOUND. Unsuccessful Attempt to Recover Teggen's Body. The remains of Fred Teggen, who committed suicide at Two Rivers yesterday, still lie in the river at that place. The life saving crew worked yesterday, last night and all day today, but were not successful in recovering the body. No reason is known for Teggen's rash act, but as he had been drinking considerable of late, it is generally supposed that the reactionary effects of a continuous spree led him to take the fatal step. His domestic relations have been most pleasant and his wife can give no other reason than the above for the deed. It is supposed that the act was premeditated, for upon leaving the hous (sic) he deposites (sic) his watch, money and other articles in a stand drawer in his room. Mr. Teggen leaves a wife and four children, who have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Manitowoc, Wis. Friday, November 4, 1898 P. 1 ********* MYSTERY IS SOLVED. Body of Fred Tegge, Who Disappeared From Two Rivers, Nov. 8, is Found. The mystery surrounding the disappearance of Fred Tegge, from Two Rivers, has been cleared up. The body of the missing man was found in Neshoto river yesterday and in accordance with the fact the Coroner's jury returned a verdict of death due to drowning with suicide intent. Readers of the HERALD are familiar with the story. On the evening of Nov. 8, 1898, Fred Tegge, a contractor of Two Rivers, left his home and that was the last ever heard of him. It seems that he had been drinking considerable previous to that time and on the evening in question when his wife called him for supper, he refused to eat, left the house at once and failed to return. A search was instituted with the result that a coat and hat was found near the river, which Mrs. Tegge positively identified as belonging to her husband. The river was dragged and two days were spent in an unsuccessful endeavor to recover the body. One point that gave color to the theory of suicide was that Tegge had left his watch and other valuables at the house when he disapeared (sic). Every effort to recover the body was unsuccessful. Men working about the river yesterday discovered a body and when it was recovered it was identified as that of Tegge. The remains will be buried at Two Rivers. A wife and four children survive him. AUGUST C. TERENS cemetery #63 From the Two Rivers Reporter, Monday, Oct. 24,1932: Mishicot's "Grand Old Man," August Terens, Observes His Ninetieth Milestone Sunday Nearly 50 relatives, friends and neighbors helped August Terens, Mishicot's "grand old man," and lone survivor of the local G.A.R. post celebrated his 90th birthday anniversary on the old homestead in "French Settlement," a mile and one-half southwest of that village Sunday. Despite his advanced age, Mr. Terens is in the best of health and expects to reach the century milestone. He is living in retirement on the old homestead now operated by his son, Oscar, and is again enjoying the hunting season. For more than 75 years Mr. Terens has been an ardent disciple of Izaak Walton, and most always brings home the prized game of that vicinity. He has not missed securing a hunting license for years. Mishicot's "grand old man," beloved by its citizens and neighboring residents for miles around came to Mishicot from Germany in his early youth, and has always resided in that vicinity since. When the "North" called for volunteers August Terens was among the first to answer, and he now remains the sole survivor of the Grand Army Republic post of this city. For more than 50 years he has been a member of the Odd Fellows of this city, having been honored by the local lodge here two years ago. Nearly 50 years ago Mr. Terens built the first brick structure in Mishicot, the Badger State Hotel, which he operated for many years. Retiring from the business more than 25 years ago he sold the hotel to Fabian Cretton, who died early this year. Following his disposal of the well known old hostelry in Mishicot he purchased the farm of the late Anton Cayo on the King's Bridge road, with his son Oscar operating it in later years. For years Mr. Terens has been a colorful figure in the Memorial Day exercises in Two Rivers. Two years ago the carriage conveyed his only other comrade, the late Matt Haag of the town of Mishicot, but he rode alone this year. ******** 2nd Regiment Wis.
