MARIA SCHWANTZ cemetery #70 THIRD DEATH IN NEWTON FAMILY IN LESS THAN 3 WEEKS Mrs. Maria Schwant (sic), Whose Husband Died May 11 and son on May 25, Falls Victim to Same Disease Father, son and mother in the Schwantz family in Newton have been claimed by Death within a period of three weeks, the death of Mrs. Schwantz yesterday being the third in the family in that period. Pneumonia was responsible for the deaths. On May 11 Frank Schwantz, the father, died after a brief illness. Two weeks later, John Schwantz, a son, became ill, a cold contracted while attending his father's funeral developing pneumonia which caused death on May 25, and he was buried at Newton on Monday. Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Schwantz became ill and when her son's death occurred, her condition was considered so critical that she was not informed of her second bereavment and relatives, fearing that her death was a matter of hours, delayed the burial of the son in the belief that it might be necessary to hold a double funeral. The son's funeral was held Monday afternoon and twenty four hours later the mother passed away. Mrs. Schwantz was a native of Wisconsin and was 61 years of age, having been born Sept. 10, 1855. The funeral will be held at Newton. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Thursday, June 1, 1916 P.1 ******** (Maria Schwantz/d. 31 May 1916/bur. 03 Jun. 1916/from records of St. John's Evang. Luth. Ch.)
