FRANZ SCHAD and MAGGIE SCHAD (ANNA MARGARET) nee LINCK cemetery #21 From the Two Rivers Chronicle, Tuesday, Mar. 27. 1900: MURDER AND SUICIDE A terrible tragedy was enacted on a farm near the village of St. Nazianz, this county, during Monday night of last week. Frank Schad, a prosperous young farmer, murdered his wife, after a terrible struggle, and then cut his own throat. That his wife made a desperate struggle for her life was evident from the confusion and disarrangement of things in the barn where her body was found. In the morning after the tragedy the little step-son of Schad on arising discovered in a room adjoining his own sleeping room the lifeless body of his step-father lying on the floor in a pool of blood, but his mother was no where in the house and he went to the barn in search of her. Here he found her gashed and bloody remains. After killing his wife Schad cut his own throat and then went to the house, leaving a trail of blood from the barn to the house. The terrible deed is said to be due to the insanity brought on by religious troubles. His wife had been divorced from a former husband and he was denied the sacraments of his church in consequence of his marrying such a woman. This troubled him so that his mind was upset. ********* From the Two Rivers Chronicle, Tuesday, Mar. 27, 1900, inside page: SCHAD WAS INSANE Cut His Wife's Throat While in a Frenzy and Then Committed Suicide. Manitowoc, Wis., March 21, [Special.] The verdict of the jury as rendered late yesterday afternoon in the terrible Schad tragedy was homicide and suicide committed by Frank Schad, a the result of temporary insanity. The terrible deed took place in the neighborhood of 12 o'clock Monday night. Mrs. Schad's first husband, Albert Hacker of Cato, was still living, and this fact prevented the young couple from living peaceably together any longer. It was therefore agreed between husband and wife to separate, and in accordance with this understanding Schad deeded all his property to his wife Monday afternoon. A son of Mrs. Schad by her first husband, who was staying with them, retired for the evening. Shad's father, who lives close by, came over for a brief visit, and found things apparently all right. Late that night he saw someone moving about with a lantern around Schad's house - it was Schad carrying out his horrible work. In the morning when the stepson arose he noticed blood-stains on the floor, and on entering Schad's bedroom the father found him dead, his throat cut from ear to ear. The boy, who is only 10 years old, hastened to his grandparents and gave the alarm. they soon found Mrs. Schad lying in an open shed some distance from the house with a horrible open gash cut from ear to ear, almost severing the head from the body. She was terrible hacked up and lay in a pool of her own blood. After his struggle with his wife, her death resulting, Schad moved toward the house and from all indications when about twenty rods away from his wife, at a spot where were found a large jack-knife and a razor, smeared with blood, attempted to take his own life by cutting his throat with the razor. From there the blood spots could be plainly traced to his bed chamber, he undoubtedly having dragged himself to the house, where he died. The evidence taken before the jury showed that about four years ago Schad showed signs of insanity and wandered about in an almost naked condition. Fears as to his sanity were again espressed but recently. ********* From St. Nazianz researcher: Franz (May 20, 1868-March 19, 1900 husband of Margaret [Maggie] nee Linck [married Aug. 21, 1897 in civil service] son of Franz Schad and Maria Dietrich -farmer -born Town of Schleswig -murdered his wife Maggie and then committed suicide - "suicide -died instantly") ********** Maggie Schad (Anna Margaret) nee Linck Wife of Franz [married Aug. 21, 1897 in civil service] -daughter of Franz Anton Linck and Maria Magdeline Schnell -murdered by her husband Franz -"murder -instant death" -in church burial records, Maggie Schad is wrongly listed as Anna M. Schaefer, retired cattle buyer and meat market operator, died suddenly this morning at his home 1011 South 14th street. He was 73. Mr. Schaefer although not in the best of health for the past two weeks had been about and only Thursday made a trip downtown in his car. The deceased, who was known to three generations of farm folks and city residents, had been living a retired life since he quit the retail meat business here 14 years ago. Mr. Schaefer was born in Grossmoor, Hessen, Germany 73 years ago and came to America at the age of 17 years, spending a year with an aunt at Milwaukee before arriving in Manitowoc. For two years before establishing his own market at Washington and South 14th street he was employed at the old Lowe market. Mrs. Schaefer assisted her husband in the conduct of the business and Mr. Schaefer made trips into the country on cattle buying trips. ROLAND SCHAEFER cemetery #50 MAPLE GROVE BABE LOCKED IN HOME IN ABSENCE OF ITS PARENTS, IS FATALLY BURNED Older Child Unable to Summon Aid When Babe Fires Clothing and Little One is Fatally Burned and Dies Few Hours Later. Through Miracle, House Fails to Burn Setting fire to his clothing, while locked in the home with an older child, during the absence of the parents, who were engaged in loading logs in the woods some distance away, the two year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Shaffer, residents of Maple Grove was so severely burned that death resulted a few hours later. The parents returned to find the child dying. Physicians, who were summoned could do nothing to relieve the ???? sufferer whose body was terribly burned. Mr. and Mrs. Shaffer had left the house early in the day to load some logs which had been cut in the woods and had left their two children, the boy of two and an older child in the house, locking the door when they left. The younger child while playing with matches, it is said, set fire to his clothing. Unable to summon help because of the locked door and the fact that the home is distant from the nearest neighbor who would have been able to hear the cries, the older child attempted to extinguish the flames which enveloped the babe but was unable to prevent the fatal burning of the little one and when the parents later returned they found the babe with its body a mass of burns, and in agony of suffering. The older child was not seriously injured though burned about the hands in the attempt to rescue the babe. A hurried call was dispatched for a physician who upon arrival found that nothing could be done for the injured child and the little one died the same evening. The tragedy occurred Monday and burial services for the dead child were held at Reedsville yesterday from the Friedens church. The Shaffer family resides about one-half mile from Reedsville. The house was not damaged though there was danger that the building would be fired in which event both children would have met death in the flames, being unable to escape because of the locked doors. There is a warning to parents in the fate of the Maple Grove babe, not to leave children at home alone, especially with doors locked to make impossible their escape from the building in case of fire or other accident. Mr. and Mrs. Shaffer had followed a practice that many others do and are called upon to mourn. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Friday, February 11, 1916 P.1
