BERNARD ROEMER cemetery #47 From Der Nord Westen, 08 Dec. 1887: Death of 68-year old Bernard Roemer on Sun., 04 Dec. at 5pm in Manitowoc Rapids. The deceased was born 18 Nov. 1819 in Kröv, Bezirk Trier, Rheinpreussen. In 1847 he immigrated to America and lived three years in Philadelphia, coming to Wisconsin in 1850 and establishing himself in the following year in Manitowoc Rapids. He served 10 years as Town Clerk. His wife preceded him in death eight years ago. Five children (2 sons and 3 daughters) mourn his death. The funeral procession will take place Fri. morning at 9am in the Catholic Church in Manitowoc, and then burial in the Silver Lake Cemetery.

FREDERICK ROEMER cemetery #43 FRED ROEMER, FORMER WELL KNOWN RESIDENT, DIES, KENOSHA, BODY HERE FOR BURIAL TOMORROW Fred Roemer, a former resident of this city, died at Kenosha Sunday after a brief illness of pneumonia and the body will be brought here for burial, funeral services being held from St. Boniface church tomorrow morning at 8 o’clock. Mr. Roemer was born in Germany June 28, 1847, being 69 at his death. He came to Manitowoc with his parents as a boy and resided here for many years, the family later locating at Kenosha two years ago. A tinsmith by trade, Mr. Roemer was associated with his brother, the late Joseph Roemer, for years and later established a repair shop at Ninth and Washington streets in a building on the site now occupied by the Glander Studio. Besides his widow, Mr. Roemer is survived by six sons and one daughter, Joseph, Walter, Eugene, Ma?, Adolph, Richard, and Lucy. GERTRUDE ROEMER cemetery #63 Wife of John Roemer –daughter of John Barth with mother marked unknown on death record –born Germany –died from “cerebral apoplexy”) –buried at Holy Cross Cemetery, Michicot (sent in by St. Nazianz researcher/info from death certificate) ******** Mrs. Gertrude Roemer, widow of the late John Roemer, died at her home 823 Marshall street, following a stroke of paralysis which she suffered four months ago. Mrs. Roemer, who was 77 years old on March 9, was a native of Germany and a pioneer settler of Manitowoc, the family formerly residing at St. Nazianz where Mr. Roemer conducted a general store. Later they removed to Mishicot where for years he was engaged in the hotel business. After the death of her husband 11 years ago, Mrs. Roemer removed to the city. She is survived by two sons and two daughters, John, Joseph and Clara, this city and Mrs. William Klehn, Clarks Mills. The funeral will be held Wednedsay at 10 from the Catholic church at Mishicot. JACOB ROEMER cemetery #43 From Der Nord Westen, 20 Mar. 1902: Our well-known fellow citizen and prominent businessman, Mr. Jacob Roemer, closed his eyes Tues. in final sleep following an illness of about 2 wks. Mr. Roemer had fallen ill last autumn and was bed-ridden for quite a while but appeared to recover. He suffered a relapse about 2 wks. ago. He was born 26 Aug. 1839 in Croev, Rhineland, but came to Manitowoc as a child with his parents. Here he learned the tinsmith trade and in 1881 entered the metal ware business of E.K. Rand. The firm later incorporated under the name Rand & Roemer Hardware Co. where he served the last years as president. Mr. Roemer was twice married, his first wife having died 17 yrs. ago, while his second wife survives him. Also surviving are 7 children. The funeral will be held early tomorrow at 9 a.m. from the Catholic Church to the Catholic Cemetery.


JOHANN ROEMER cemetery #43 From Der Nord Westen, 10 Nov. 1892: Death on Sun. morning of 70 yr. old Johann Roemer, a resident of Two Rivers Road. The deceased was born in Cröff, Rhineland, and came to Manitowoc in 1847 where he has lived ever since. About a year and a half ago he suffered a stroke and has been bedridden up until his death. He leaves two grown children. The funeral took place Wed. at the Catholic Church.

Roemer died in his home here Friday evening from a heart attack. He had recently suffered a light stroke but was recovering… He leaves his wife and 6 children –2 sons and 4 daughters in good circumstances. He was 71. JOSEPH ROEMER (d. 1916) cemetery #43 JOSEPH ROEMER, RESIDENT HERE ALL LIFE, IS DEAD Formerly Owned Large Farm on Interurban Line - Was 61 Years Old Joseph Roemer, a life long resident of Manitowoc, formerly owner of a large farm on the interurban line now known as the Lindstedt farm, died at the hospital last night after an illness of several weeks, aged 61 years. The funeral will be held Monday morning from the undertaking rooms of the F. Vogelsand Co., to St. Boniface church at 9 o'clock, with interment at Calvary. Mr. Roemer was born in this city January 23, 1856 and was well known. Since retiring from the farm he had made his home on N. Eighth street. OSCAR ROEMER cemetery #43 From Der Nord Westen, 09 Apr. 1908: Last week we reported the death of a daughter of Fred Roemer here, and today we must report that his eldest son, 19-year old Oscar, has died of consumption with which he fell ill last Fall. In addition to the deeply sorrowing parents, he is survived by 6 brothers and a sister. The funeral was held yesterday morning at the Catholic cemetery.

HERMAN ROESELER cemetery #87 Herman Roeseler Of Town Eaton Is Summoned Today Kiel.— Herman Roeseler, aged 16, son of Mrs. Wilhelmina Roeseler of the town of Eaton, passed away at the home of his sister, Mrs. Armin Henning in the town of Greenbush this morning at 12:30 o’clock follow- ing a lingering illness. He was born in the town of Eaton in October, 1916, and attended the district school there. He was the son of the late Fred Roeseler who died fifteen years ago. Surviving him are his mother, Mrs. Wilhelmina Roeseler of the town of Eaton, and two sisters, Mrs. Edwin (Viola) Roesch of the town of Eaton and Mrs. Armin (Irma) Henning of the town of Greenbush, and one brother, Fred Roeseler, Jr., at home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at the home of his mother in the town of Eaton at 1 o’clock and at 1:30 p. m. at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran church at Louis Corners with the Rev. LUDWIG ROESLER Ludwig Roeseler(sic), 98, the oldest resident of the town of Schleswig, passed away on Tuesday morning at 11:30. He had been making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Wm. Radder. Mr. Roeseler, a native of Landsburg, Germany, was born on Feb. 7, 1829. He was married to Louisa Ebert in Germany, and in 1883 the family came to America. They made their home on a farm in the town of Schleswig. His wife preceded him in death about 30 years ago. Rev. Friedrichsmeier will conduct the funeral services, which will be held on Thursday afternoon at 1:30 at the Wm. Radder farm home, followed by services at the Schleswig Reformed church. Burial will be made in the church cemetery. Mr. Roeseler is survived by the following children: Mrs. Wm Kunz of Merrill, Mrs. Carl Reichwaldt and Mrs. Wm Radder of Schleswig and Aug Roeseler of Collins; also 25 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. WILHELMINE ROESLER cemetery #87 Mrs. Roessler Of Town Of Eaton Dies At Home Thursday Kiel. (Special) — Mrs. Wilhelmina Roessler, 60, died Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock at her farm home in the town of Eaton, Manitowoc county, after an illness of several months. She was born Sept. 15, 1879, in the town of Eaton, the daughter of Carl and Johanna Schnell. On Oct. 14, 1902, she was married to Frederick Roessler, and the couple lived in Kiel for a time, later moving to the present farm home. Her husband died 21 years ago. Survivors include two daughters and one son, Mrs. Edwin (Viola) Roesch, New Holstein, Mrs. Armin (Irma) Henning, Random Lake, and Frederick at home. There are three grandchildren. Four sisters, Mrs. August Rabe, Steinthal, Mrs. Jacob Reichart, Kiel, Mrs. John Rue, town of Schleswig, and Mrs. William Ott, Pigeon lake, and three brothers, Henry, Manitowoc, William, New Holstein, and Carl, near Manitowoc, also survive her. Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 p. m. at the C. J. Meiselwitz funeral home here, and at 2 o’clock at the Zion Lutheran church at Lewis Corners. The Rev. Harold 0. Grunwald will officiate and interment will be made in the adjoining church cemetery. The body may be viewed from Sunday afternoon until time of the services. The casket will not be opened at the church.


ANNA ROETHEL (d. 1952) cemetery #90 Mrs. Anna Roethel, 79, died Tuesday night at the farm home in the Town of Meeme, Manitowoc County, following a stroke which she suffered six weeks ago. Funeral services will be conducted at the St. John Evangelical and Reformed Church at Schwartzwald, the Rev. William Schulz officiating and burial will be in the adjoining cemetery. Born Oct. 18, 1872, in the town of Meeme, Anne Schreiber was married to Fred Roethel in 1890 and the couple resided on a farm in Meeme. Her husband died in 1943. She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Louis Fintelman of Franklin, Sheboygan County, Mrs. Arnold Pfefferkorn of Manitowoc, Mrs. Gilbert Henschel of Kiel and Mrs. Harold Reineck and Miss Emma Roethel at home; four sons, Harry at home, Arthur of the Town of Herman, Sheboygan County, Rone of New Holstein and Herbert of Milwaukee; three sisters, Mrs. August Scheib of Plymouth, Miss Emma Schreiber of Ada and Mrs. Louisa Gesch of Franklin; 15 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. ANNA ROETHEL (d. 1955) cemetery #90 Mrs. Anna Roethel, 84, of the town of Schleswig, passed away today at the Sheboygan Memorial Hospital following an illness of one year duration. Nee Ebeling, she was born March 2, 1870, in the town of Herman, the daughter of the late Ernest and Johanna Ebeling. She was married to Christian Roethel, town of Meeme, on Sept. 13, 1891. The couple lived in the town of Meeme for several years but for the past 50 years made their home in the town of Schleswig. Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Adalia Damrow of Cleveland, Mrs. Walter (Hilda) Lipchow and Mrs. Orville (Minnie) George, both of Milwaukee, Mrs. Joseph (Erna) Nennig and Mrs. Ray (Viola) Rabe, town of Schleswig; two sons, Arvin and Arno, town of Schleswig; eight grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and two brothers, August Ebeling of Sheboygan and Louis Ebeling, town of Herman. Her husband passed away in Feb., 1937. Funeral services will be held Saturday at the St. John’s Evangelical Reformed Church, Schwartzwald. ARTHUR ROETHEL cemetery #90 Arthur F. Roethel, 81, of the town of Herman, a veteran of World War I, died at his home this morning after a lengthy illness. A retired Herman farmer, he was born May 5, 1891, in the town of Meeme, Manitowoc County, son of the late Fred and Anna Schreiber Roethel. He attended Pigeon River District School in Meeme. Mr. Roethel was employed at Ehnert Co. in Kiel prior to his service in World War I. He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, Schwartzwald, in Herman, and of World War I Barracks, Sheboygan. On Nov. 27, 1926, he married Lydia Laux of the town of Schleswig. The couple lived on a farm in Schleswig for six years, before purchasing a farmstead in Herman on Highway 32, where they lived ever since. He retired from farming in 1956, and later worked for Osthof’s and Pine Point resorts at Elkhart Lake for four years. Surviving are his wife; a son Ardon, Herman; 16 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Harold Reineck and Miss Emma Roethel, both of Sheboygan; Mrs. Anna Pfeffekorn of Manitowoc, and Mrs. Gilbert Henschel, Kiel, and a brother, Herbert Roethel, Kiel. ARVIN W. ROETHEL cemetery #84 Arvin W. Roethel, 68, of R. 2 Kiel, died Friday at his trailer home at Millhome after being stricken with a heart attack. He was born Aug. 29, 1897 in the Town of Meeme, a son of the late Christian and Anna Ebeling Roethel . The family later moved to the Town of Schleswig where he attended district schools. A veteran of World War II, Mr. Roethel was employed by August Ehnert & Sons, Kiel, and by Eickhoss Feed Mill, Millhome, before his retirement in 1962. Surviving are five sisters, Mrs. Aledia Damrow, rural Cleveland; Mrs. Hilda Lipchow and Mrs. Minnie George, both of Milwaukee, Mrs. Erma Nennig and Mrs. Viola Rabe, both of Kiel; and a brother, Arno, Millhome. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel, with the Rev. Vernon E. Jaberg, pastor, St. Peter's United Church of Christ, officiating. CARL ROETHEL cemetery #87 Charles Roethel Dies at Age of 80 An invalid for some months, and rapidly weakening of the past two weeks, Charles Roethel died this Wednesday morning at his home here, a victim of the infirmities of old age. He would have been 80 years of age in August of this year. Mr. Roethel was born August 1, 1849 in Germantown, Washington county, Wis., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Roethel. He remained at the parental home until January 9, 1873, when he was united in marriage to Miss Ida Wickensberg of Ada. The newly married couple then moved to a farm in the town of Meeme, where Mrs. Roethel died January 1, 1902. For twelve years after the death of his wife, Mr. Roethel continued to manage the Meeme farm, when in 1914 he moved to Kiel, settling on the little farm on what is now Calumet avenue. The farm has been conducted by his son Herman for the past number of years. Seven children were born to the couple, three of whom survive. They are Herman Roethel, at Kiel, Mrs. Louise Marx of Sheboygan, and Mrs. Ferdinand Schneider of Ada. Ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren survive. Funeral services will be held at one p.m. Saturday at the home, and at 1:30 at the Lutheran church at Louis Corners, with interment in the adjoining cemetery. The Rev. L. B. Mielke of Millersville will conduct the services.


CHRIST ROETHEL cemetery #90 Kiel—Christian Roethel, aged 70, died at his home in Millhome Sunday following a lingering illness of two years’ duration. He was born on a farm in the town of Meeme, Sept, 9, 1866, and on Sept 3, 1891, was married to Miss Anna Ebeling, also of the town of Meeme. The couple located on the Roethel homestead where they resided for 15 years, and for the past 31 years they resided in Millhome. Mr. Rothel is survived by his wife, five daughters, Mrs. Adelia Damrow of Edwards, Mrs. Hilda Lipchow and Mrs. Minnie Kazses of Milwaukee, Mrs. Erna Nennig of Millhome and Mrs. Viola Rabe of Schleswig; two sons, Armin of the town of Schleswig, and Arvin at home; one brother, Fred of the town of Meeme and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at the C. J. Meiselwitz Funeral home in Kiel, with services at the Evangelical church in the town of Schwartzwald. The Rev. CHRISTINA ROETHEL cemetery #90 Mrs. Christina Roethel, 85, a former resident of the Town Meeme, Manitowoc County, died Thursday at the home of her son, Ned Roeder, who resides on Route No. 1 Sheboygan. Her death resulted from old age. For some time she had been ailing at intervals and since Tuesday she was confined to her bed. December 30, 1833, she was born in Mannheim, Meinz on the Rhine River, Germany. She was married twice. Her first marriage occurred in Germany, and a short time later in the year 1861, the couple migrated to this country, and settled in Town Meeme. Since the death of her second husband, Henry Roethel, who died eleven years ago in Town Meeme, she had made her home with her son. The survivors are a son, Fred Roeder, Route 1, Sheboygan and one daughter, Mrs. Catherine Mueller, 314 Wisconsin Avenue, Sheboygan; twelve grandchildren and five great grandchildren. A son, Henry Roeder, died twenty-seven years ago. The remains were removed to the home of a grandson, Gustav Roeder, at Schwartzwald, from where the funeral was held today and services were conducted at St. John’s Evangelical church, Schwartzwald. Mr. Roethel was born Oct. 12, 1902, in Town of Meeme, son of the late Frederick and Anna Schreiber Roethel. He had been employed at August Ehnert and Sons, Kiel. After the death of his father in May, 1943, he operated the home farm, retiring 10 years ago. He was a member of the St. John United Church of Christ. Survivors include two brothers, Arthur of rural Elkhart Lake and Herbert of Kiel; and four sisters, Mrs. Anna Pfefferkorn of rural Manitowoc, Miss Emma of rural Cleveland, Mrs. Gilbert Henschel of Kiel and Mrs. Harold Reineck of Sheboygan. Mr. Roethel was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ at Schwartzwald, town of Herman. Surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Anna Pfefferkorn, rural Manitowoc, Miss Emma Roethel, R. 1, Cleveland, Mrs. Gilbert Henschel, Kiel, and Mrs. Harold Reineck, Sheboygan, and two brothers, Arthur, rural Elkhart Lake, and Herbert, Kiel. HENRY ROETHEL cemetery #90 Henry Roethel, aged 71, life-long resident of Town Meeme, passed away suddenly Friday afternoon at his home, after an illness of six months duration. Mr. Roethel suffered an apoplectic stroke on June 9, and several light strokes since that time. Another stroke on Friday morning, which resulted in his death, ended many months of suffering. Born in Town Meeme, May 15, 1861, Mr. Roethel attended the public schools there and later the parochial school in town Herman. He was confirmed on March 29, 1874 at the St. John’s Evangelical church at Schwartzwald by the Rev. F. Moccke. Then together with his brother he conducted a cheese factory at Thiensville for several years, later operating his own factory at School Hill. In 1890 Mr. Roethel bought a farm which he owned and worked until 10 years ago, when he retired and sold it to his son, Oscar. Mr. Roethel was married to Miss Emma Boeldt, who passed away in February, 1895. He was then united in marriage on Dec. 10, 1895 to Miss Eliese Schulz of town Herman. Besides his widow, Mr. Roethel is survived by the following children, Mrs. George Feldman, Mrs. Henry Mauck, Jr., town Herman; John of Batavia, George and Oscar of Meeme, Mrs. Norbert Grunewald of Howards Grove, Hugo of Oostburg, Reinhold of Meeme, Miss Hildegarde Roethel of Sheboygan and Arvin, at home. There are also fifteen grandchildren, one great grandchild, three brothers, George of Thiensville, Fred of Meeme and Christian of Schleswig, and his aged mother-in-law, Mrs. Mathilda Schulz. One daughter died in 1899. The funeral will be held at the home and at St. John Evangelical church at Schwartzwald. The Rev. F Mohme will officiate and burial will be made in the St. John cemetery. HERMAN ROETHEL cemetery #82 Rites Held Here Tuesday For Herman Roethel Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon for Herman Roethel, 74, who died at Memorial hospital Friday. He had been a patient at the hospital for about five weeks. The services were conducted by the Rev. E. L. Worthman and burial was made in the Kiel cemetery. Mr. Roethel was a member of the state legislature, representing Manitowoc county for two terms, from 1918 to 1920 and from 1926 to 1928. He also was a former fire chief in Kiel, and was a member of the county board for three years. Mr. Roethel was born January 3, 1882, in the town of Meeme, son of the late Carl and Ida Wickesburg Roethel. He received his early education in a district school and also attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he took a short course in agriculture. He married the former Katherine Raquet at Zion Lutheran church November 7, 1905. They operated a farm for 10 years before moving to Kiel. While in the city, Mr. Roethel was employed for a period of time as a cattle shipper for the Kiel Mercantile association before establishing his own egg buying and selling business. The couple observed their golden wedding anniversary November 5th of last year and more than 200 guests visited with them for the occasion at the Brooklyn hall. He was born Jan. 3, 1882, on a farm in the town of Meeme, Manitowoc county, received a common school education and attended the short course in agriculture at the University of Wisconsin. He lived on the same farm for 32 years, making a specialty of raising pure bred Berkshire hogs and Jersey cattle on which he secured many prizes at the state and county fairs for several years. In 1914 he sold his farm and moved to Kiel, assisted in organizing the Kiel Mercantile Association and became director and live stock shipper. From 1909 to 1915 he was president of the Manitowoc county order of the Wisconsin Experiment Association. He has served as school clerk and village assessor. He was elected to the assembly in 1918, receiving 1,556 votes to 1,436 for Martin Rappel (Dem.). Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at St. Peter Evangelical and Reformed church with Rev. Roland Kley officiating. Burial was made in the Kiel cemetery. LILLY ROETHEL cemetery #90 Funeral services for Mrs. George H. Roethel, 69, of R. 1 Cleveland, who died Monday at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital, will be held at St. John’s United Church of Christ at Schwartzwald. The Rev. E. L. Hennig will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. The former Lilly Zill was born on Sept. 19, 1895, in Town Centerville, a daughter of the late Gustave and Emma Zill. She attended district school and on Feb. 1, 1919, was married to George H. Roethel of the town of Meeme. The couple farmed in town Meeme until 1961, when they retired. Mrs. Roethel was a member of St. John’s Church. Survivors are her husband; one daughter, Mrs. Laverne (Marcella) Busse, of R. 1, Newton; one son, Wallace, of R. 1 Cleveland; seven grandchildren; three brothers, Alfred of Cleveland, Hilbert of R. 1 Newton, and Harry of Sheboygan and a sister, Mrs. William Wagner of R. 1, Cleveland. The couple resided on the Roethel home farm until their retirement in 1964. He was president of M.P.R. and Lakeland Insurance Co. since 1957. He was director of the Town of Meeme and was the supervisor since 1961. He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ and its Brother- hood. He was a member of the Ada Fire Dept. and a former member of the church consistory. He was also a director of the school board. He was married Feb. 25, 1921, to Viola Olm of the Town of Meeme at St. John’s United Church of Christ, and they resided on farms in the Towns of Meeme and New Holstein. She preceded him in death in January of 1958, and for the past five years he resided in Kiel. VIOLA ROETHEL cemetery #90 Mrs. Rone Roethel, 56, wife of a Town of New Holstein farmer, died Late Saturday afternoon at her R. 2, Kiel, home following an illness of several months. The former Viola Olm, she was born in the Town of Meeme, Manitowoc County, July 21, 1901, a daughter of the late William and Emma Laux Olm. She attended district school in Meeme and graduated from Kiel High School in 1919. Following graduation from the then Manitowoc County Norman School she taught the rural Millhome and Pigeon River Schools in the Town of Meeme. Her marriage to Mr. Roethel took place at St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed church, Schwartzwald, Feb. 25, 1921. Following marriage the couple farmed, the past 19 years on the present place in the town of New Holstein between Kiel and New Holstein in Calumet County. Surviving are her husband; one son, (private), at home and a brother, Edgar Olm, R. 1, Kiel. One brother preceded her in death. PAUL B. ROHAN cemetery #43 Paul D. Rohan 61, of 2401 Clark St., Manitowoc, died early Thursday at his home following an unexpected coronary attack. Funeral services have been tentatively set for 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, and at 9 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church, the Rev. Clement P. Kern officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc. The American Legion Drews Bleser Post, Manitowoc, of which he was a member, will perform the military rites. Mr. Rohan was born July 7, 1898, at Rome, Wis., son of John and Ellen Moore Rohan. His family moved to New London where he lived until 1917 when he entered the service and fought in World War I. He was a corporal in the army quartermaster corp stationed in Germany. On his discharge in 1919 he moved to Manitowoc where he lived until his death. He was a member of the American Legion Drews Bleser Post, the Holy Name Society of St. Paul Catholic Church and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. Prior to his retirement in 1951, he was 26 years employed as a switchman for the Chicago and North Western Railroad. He married Irene Moser Feb. 14, 1920, at Manitowoc. Survivors include his wife, three daughters, a sister, Mrs. Earl Brey of Milwaukee, and six grandchildren. AGNES K. ROHDE cemetery #43 Mrs. John Rohde, 71, of 1602 South 14th Street, whose late husband operated a shoe store here for a number of years, died in Holy Family Hospital at 6 p. m. Friday, following an illness of three weeks. She had been taken to the hospital only four hours before her death. Funeral services will be held at 6:30 p. m. Monday at the Leschke Funeral Home and at 9 o’clock at the St. Andrew Catholic Church with the Rev. Henry Letz officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Nee, Agnes Tomchek, Mrs. Rohde was born on her parents’ farm in the town of Newton in 1877. She was married to Mr. Rohde about 52 years ago. He preceded her in death 13 years ago. Surviving are one son, Walter; two daughters, Mrs. Alois H. Wier and Mrs. Lawrence Kabat, all of this city; one brother, Walter Tomchek of Newton, and six grandchildren. ANTON ROHDE cemetery #69 LEAVES MANY RELATIVES Large Family Survives Anton Rohde, Who Died at Newton Anton Rohde, well known resident of the town of Newton, died Sunday night at 11 o’clock. Mr. Rohde had suffered for months from tuberculosis of the stomach. He was 27 years old, and is survived by a wife, two children, parents and five brothers and five sisters. Mr. Rohde was elected town clerk of the town of Newton last spring, but resigned owing to his business matters. Most of his relatives live in this county. He was a cheese maker, having his factory at Newton. The funeral will be held Wednesday morning from the Catholic Church at Nordheim. JOHN J. ROHDE cemetery #43 JOHN J. ROHDE DIES AT NOON AT HIS HOME Shoe Merchant for the Last 36 Years, Native of City, Was Ill Three Months John J. Rohde, a shoe merchant in Manitowoc for 36 years, died this noon at his home, 1601 South 14th Street. He had been ill for three months. The deceased was born in this city and spent his early life at Nordheim, town of Newton. He was married in 1898 to Miss Agnes Tomchek and the next year they moved to this city. Mr. Rohde entered a partnership with Anton Karnofsky. They opened a shoe store on Washington Street which firm has since continued. He was a member of St. Boniface Society, Catholic Order of Foresters, Catholic Knights of Wisconsin, Holy Name Society and Eagles. Survivors are his widow; two sons, Walter and Frank both of this city; two daughters, Mrs. Alois Weir and Miss Janet, both of this city; four brothers, Edward and Martin of Newton; Frank, Shaboygan; Thomas, Plymouth; five sisters, Mrs. Michael Jagodinsky, Mrs. Ignatz Bonk and Mrs. Henry Kaston, all of this city; Mrs. Frank Glomski, Manitowoc Rt. 1, Mrs. Nicholas Kuffel, Newton. ROHDE DIES, NEWTON Came Here From Germany 64 Years Ago; Husband Dead Mrs. Mary Rohde, 88, who came to Manitowoc with her husband from Germany 68 years ago, died Sunday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nick Kuffel, at Nordheim. For over 80 years she resided in the town of Newton. Funeral services for Mrs. Rohde will be held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. from St. Casimir’s Catholic Church at Nordheim, with internment beside the remains of her husband, in the adjoining cemetery. Born Mary Welneak in Germany 88 years ago, she was married there 68 years ago to Martin Rohde. Shortly after they came to this country and settled in Manitowoc. Later they moved to Newton to engage in farming. Mr. Rohde died 19 years ago. Five daughters, Mrs. Michael Jagodinsky and Mrs. Ignatz Bonk, city, Mrs. Henry Kasten, Mrs. Frank Glomski and Mrs. Nick Kuffel of Newton, five sons John, city, Martin and Edward of Newton, Frank of Sheboygan, and Thomas of Osman survive. There are also 41 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren. The remains were removed to the home in Nordheim from the Beduhn and Goets Funeral Home, Two Rivers and may be viewed up to the hour of the funeral. It took me a while to check the Geenbay diocese records which I did last September and found the following information; Her name is Maryanna (nee Melnik) Rohde, born April 1845/Died August 27, 1933. RICHARD ROHDE cemetery #89A Funeral services for Richard Rohde, 74, of 1412 Hawthorne Ave., lifelong Two Rivers resident and retired Kahlenberg Bros. Co., Two Rivers, machinist, who died at 10 a.m. Monday at Two Rivers Municipal, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Emanuel Evangelical Church, Two Rivers, the Rev. M.J. Roehrdanz officiating. Interment will be in Pioneers' Rest Cemetery, Two Rivers. Mr. Rohde was born on Two Rivers' south side April 13, 1885, son of the late Herman and Fredericka Beeck Rohde. A lifelong member of Emanuel Church, Two Rivers, he was employed for more than 47 years as a machinist at the marine engine works of Kahlenberg Bros. Co., Two Rivers. He retired eight years ago. Surviving are his wife, the former Martha Schramm, whom he married May 11, 1910, at Two Rivers; a daughter, Mrs. Alvin Schultz of Two Rivers, and Paul A., a Two Rivers dairy operator; a sister, Mrs. Alma Albrecht of Manitwooc, and three grandchildren. BERTHA ROHRBACH cemetery #37 AGED PIONEER OF COUNTY IS TAKEN BY DEATH Mrs. Bertha Rohrbach, resident of the county for more than seventy- five years, passed away early this morning on the old homestead on the Town Line road on which she had lived for more than sixty years. A sudden stroke wore heavily on her years and she passed soon after being stricken. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon, at the Baptist church on the Town Line road, the Rev. Palfemer officiating. Mrs. Rohrbach, nee Glare, was born in Germany June 1, 1846, and came to this country with her parents at the age of six years. At the age of nine, living in the country near Kossuth, she was sent to work to help support the family which was experiencing the early day hardships so common with those who pioneered the county. Nine years later, at the age of eighteen, she was married to Martin Rohrbach, who passed away thirteen years ago. Four sons, Fred, Ernest, August and William, and three daughters, Mrs. Henry Eggert, Mrs. Robert Mueller and Mrs. Jacob Emmett, and thirty- two grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren survive. EMMA ROHRBACH cemetery #64 Mrs. Albert Rohrbach, 87, of Rt. 2, Manitowoc, died Thursday morning at Park Lawn Nursing Home, Manitowoc. The former Emma Specht was born August 5, 1876, in the Town of Manitowoc Rapids, daughter of the late Mathias and Maria Antholt Specht. She was married to Albert Rohrbach Nov. 22, 1899, at Manitowoc. They farmed all their married life on Route 2, Manitowoc. Mr. Rohrbach died in 1944. Mrs. Rohrbach was a life member of First Baptist Church and its Women's Mission Society and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 196. Surviving are four sons, Albert and Ruben Rohrbach of Rt. 2, Manitowoc, Victor Rohrbach of Mena, Ark., and Harold Rohrbach of Wauwatosa; a daughter, Mrs. William E. CLARENCE J. ROHRER cemetery #43 Clarence J. Rohrer, age 92, formerly of 1833 Fairmont St., Manitowoc, died on Thursday morning, Oct. 16, 2008, at North Ridge Medical and Rehabilitation Center, Manitowoc. Clarence was born on June 15, 1916, in Manitowoc, son of the late John and Katherine (Sieracki) Rohrer. He was a graduate of Lincoln High School, class of 1934. After graduating from high school, he worked in his father's cabinet shop until 1936. He then served his Electrical Apprenticeship in the employment of Walter Rohrer, graduating on June 6, 1940. On July 2, 1941, he married the former Helen Cherny at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Manitowoc. She preceded him in death on Feb. 9, 2000. During World War II, Clarence was employed at the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co. and later became foreman of the electrical shop. After leaving the shipbuilding company, he worked as a licensed electrician for the Anderson Electrical Co. prior to retirement. Clarence was a member of the IBEW Electrical Workers Union and the Manitowoc Eagles Club Aeries 609. He was a skilled craftsman and took pride building the couple's own home. He was an avid sportsman and loved hunting and fishing. For over 50 years, he gathered weekly with high school buddies in the shack they built on the scenic Manitowoc River. Referred to as "Choir Practice," these sessions consisted of refreshments and meals of fish and game, along with nostalgic discussions of earlier years. He had a deep love for his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) The primary cause of death, however, was dropsy. He leaves ten children, of which 3 are still quite young. His wife preceded him in death several years ago. His remains were interred in the Catholic Cemetery on Tues. morning.

OLIVE R. ROHRER cemetery #43 Olive R. Rohrer, age 92, of Manitowoc, died suddenly Saturday, May 10, 2008, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc. Olive was born Dec. 17, 1915, in the town of Kossuth, daughter of the late Charles and Albina (Sykora) Pech. On Sept. 25, 1941, she married Robert F. Rohrer. He preceded her in death on April 6, 1996. Olive was a member of the St. Clare Women's Society and was a Eucharistic minister for the home bound for the former St. Andrew's Catholic Church. She also volunteered at St. Vincent De Paul for numerous years. In addition, Olive taught chair caning at the Manitowoc Senior Center. She enjoyed flowers and gardening, and loved to read, knit and crotchet. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) He was a veteran employe at the shipyards and was a patternmaker foreman until his retirement two years ago. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters Court No. 473. ERNA ROIDT cemetery #43 Mrs. Joseph Roidt, 77, who had resided with her daughter and son-in-law, died, Tuesday afternoon at Family Heritage Nursing Home, Manitowoc. A son of the late Joseph and Mary Roitt, he was born in Schleswig, Aug. 13, 1895, and married Cecilia Ebert of Watertown, Nov. 21, 1944, in Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Kiel. Following their marriage the couple operated the Roitt home farm about two miles northeast of Kiel. Mr. Roitt was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Parish and its Holy Name Society. Roitt Laid To Rest Mrs. Marie(sic) Roitt, aged 83, widow of the late Joseph Roitt, passed away at her farm home in the town of Schleswig on Thursday evening at 7 o'clock, very unexpectedly. The deceased, nee Marie Himmelsbach, was born April 1, 1857 in Germany. In 1875 she came to this country and settled in Wisconsin. She was married to Joseph Roitt in 1889, and the couple moved onto a farm in the town of Schleswig, where they resided for many years and then purchased their present farm home 2-1/2 miles northeast of Kiel. Her husband preceded her in death on August 2, 1937. Survivors are 2 sons and one daughter, namely: John on the homestead farm; George of Cedar Grove, and Mrs. Arno (Helen) Schneider of the town of Meeme, and ten grandchildren. The former Celia Ebert, she was born March 27, 1895, at Watertown, a daughter of the late Joseph and Margarette Holzman Ebert. On Nov. 18, 1944, she married John Roitt, of Schleswig, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Kiel. The couple farmed in the Town of Schleswig until a year ago. Mr. Roitt died in February, 1967. Mrs. Roitt was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and the church's Christian Mothers Society. A sister, Mrs. Lillie Hallmeyer of Columbus, Wis., is the only survivor. MARY B. ROLLAND cemetery #55 Sorrow reigns in the home of Jerry Rolland of Grimms, death having entered Saturday noon, Oct. 12, and claimed for its own his young and loving wife. The decedent’s maiden name was Mary Peppard. She was 33 years of age and was married at Maple Grove on Oct. 20, 1908. She was in the best of health and apparently had a long life before her when she was stricken with bronchial pneumonia on Oct. 3, and although everything available in medical aid was summoned, it was expected from the first to be fatal as it was the third attack of that dreaded disease. She leaves to mourn her early departure her heart-broken husband and three small children, Florence, aged 7 years, Clement, aged 5 years and Charles, one year old; also her mother, who is too ill to be told of her death, her father, Michael Peppard of Wayside, five sisters and a large host of relatives and friends. She was a faithful Christian and a most loving wife and mother, who will be very sadly missed. The funeral was held at St. Patrick’s church in Maple Grove Monday morning, mass being sung by the Rev. RICHARD ROLLAND (d. 1917) cemetery #55 Richard Rolland, who formerly lived on a farm a half mile west of this village, died at his home at Stark, last Saturday morning. He has been seriously ill for the past few weeks and his death was not unexpected. He is survived by a wife and three children. The funeral was held last Monday at Maple Grove and was very largely attended. ********** The funeral of Richard Rolland of Stark, formerly of this county, was held at Maple Grove April 2. In spite of the inclement weather and poor roads it was among one of the largest held here for some time. Solemn high mass was read by Father Casey, assisted by Rev. Braun and Rev. Kahfil?. Mr. Rolland had been in poor health for some time, all medical help being of no avail. He is survived by a wife, two sons and two daughters, Jerry and William, and Mrs. Ed. ROBERT ROLLAND cemetery #77 Robert Rolland, 51, of Reedsville, died Saturday afternoon at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday at Reedsville Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Reedsville. The Rev. Norman Krutzik will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Rolland was born Dec. 22, 1921, in the Town of Franklin, son of the late William Rolland and Elizabeth Hayden Rolland. He was graduated from East DePere High School. He married Jane Pollack Sept. 6, 1947, at Reedsville. He served on the Reedsville Village Board for several years. He started in the insurance business in 1963 with the Modern Woodman of America Life Insurance Co. He organized his own insurance agency in 1958. In 1969, he incorporated the agency known as the Reedsville-Brillion Insurance Agency Inc., with Ronald Schultz of Brillion as his partner. Mr. Rolland was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Mary Catholic Church, Lifetime member of Reedsville-Wayside Sportsman's Club, Reedsville Lions Club, Reedsville Industrial Development, Reedsville Athletic Assn. and past member of Manitowoc County Life Underwriters. SADIE ROLLAND cemetery #55 Maple Grove Woman Dead. Mrs. James Rowland(sic) of Maple Grove died at her home last night at the age of 23 years, a victim of pneumonia from which she had suffered but a short time. Deceased, formerly Miss Ebert, daughter of Edward Ebert of Cato, was one of the most popular young women of the section in which she resided. ANNA MARIA ROLLINGER cemetery #89B From Der Nord Westen, 21 Mar. 1901: Death in Two Creeks last Thurs. of Mrs. Anna Marie Rollinger, widow of the late Peter Rollinger, of old age debility. The deceased was born in Leideling, Kingdom of Luxemburg, on 19 Dec. 1813 and came to America in 1856. Her funeral was held Sat. from the Catholic Church in Two Rivers.


ALEX ROLLMANN cemetery #83 Alex Rollmann, 74, of 1024 Fremont St., Kiel, died shortly after admittance at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital on Tuesday evening, after being stricken by a heart attack at his home. He was born Jan. 21, 1910, in Calumet County, a son of the late Nicholas and Mary Wettstein Rollmann. He attended school in Chilton and New Holstein. On Nov. 20, 1937, he and the former Alice Dorn were married at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Kiel. They resided in Kiel, where Mr. Rollmann worked at the Kiel Woodenware Co. until retiring in 1976. He was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Parish, Kiel. Surviving are his wife; three daughters, (private); three sons, (private); 12 grandchildren; one great grandchild; two brothers, John of Fond du Lac and Joseph, Manitowoc; and three sisters, Mrs. Theresa Evenson of Valders, Mrs. Olive Dorn of New Holstein and Mrs. Apalone Dorn of St. Anna. He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters. A funeral Mass will be held at Ss. Peter and Paul Church, Kiel, with the Rev. Thomas Leannah, pastor, celebrant. Burial will be at the parish cemetery. December 1984


MARY ROLLMANN cemetery #83 Mrs. Nicholas Rollmann, aged 62, passed away at her farm home one mile north of Rockville, on Tuesday morning. The deceased nee Miss Mary Wettstein, was the daughter of the late Frank and Elizabeth Wettstein, Stockbridge, where she was born January 24, 1895. She was married to Nicholas Rollmann of Jericho and located in the town of Chilton. In 1911 they moved to the town of New Holstein, where they resided for two years. Two years ago the Rollmann family moved to their present farm home. Nine children were born to them of whom all are living. Surviving Mrs. Rollmann are her husband, five daughters and four sons, namely: Mrs. Frank (Mary) Leitner of Fond du Lac, Mrs. Chas. (Lena) Daun of Brothertown, Mrs. Arthur (Theresa) Evenson of Sheboygan, the Misses Olive and Appolonia at home Joseph and Alex at home, Peter of this city, and John of Fond du Lac. She is also survived by three brothers and thirteen grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Friday morning at 9:15 o’clock from the family residence, and at 10 o’clock with services at the SS. Peter and Paul Catholic church here. The Rev. Father J. J. Esdepsky will officiate and burial will be made in the SS. NICHOLAS ROLLMANN cemetery #83 Nicholas J. Rollmann, 86, retired Calumet County farmer died shortly before noon Thursday at the home of his son, Alex, 1924 Fremont St., Kiel. A son of the late Peter and Elizabeth Franzen Rollmann, he was born in the town of Brothertown, Calumet County, Feb. 23, 1870. He attended St. Charles Catholic School at Charlesburg. His marriage tot he former Mary Wettstein of Kloten, Calumet County, took place Jan. 24, 1895, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Kloten. Following marriage the couple farmed near Chilton and later near New Holstein. Since his retirement in 1932 Mr. Rollmann had lived in and near Kiel. His wife died in 1935. Surviving in addition to the son, Alex, are three other sons, Peter, Kiel, Joseph, Manitowoc, and John, Fond du Lac; five daughters, Mrs. Frank Leitner (Mary), Fond du Lac, Mrs. Charles Daun (Magdalena), Charlesburg, Mrs. Arthur Evenson (Theresa), Valders, Mrs. Frank Dorn (Olive) and Mrs. Joseph Dorn (Appelonia), both of R. 2, New Holstein, 38 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Math Halfmann, R. 2, New Holstein, and two brothers, Henry, Chilton, and Frank, Colorado. He was also preceded in death by four sisters. Services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Kiel, following brief 8:30 rites at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home. Celebrant of the requiem mass will be the Rev. F.X. PETER ROLLMANN cemetery #83 Peter Rollmann, 69, of R. 2, Kiel, died at 1 p.m. Sunday at St. Nicholas Hospital where he had been a patient for three weeks. He was born Dec. 25, 1895 in the Town of Chilton, a son of the late Nicholas and Mary Wettstein Rollmann, and attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Chilton. Oct. 17, 1922 he was married to Angeline Herr of the Town of Meeme at St. Fidelis Catholic Church at Spring Valley. The couple moved to Kiel in 1923 and lived there for 41 years where he was employed at the Kiel Wooden Ware Co. until his retirement in 1964. He was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Kiel and of the Holy Name Society. Surviving are his wife; four daughters (names omitted for privacy), 17 grandchildren, three brothers, Joseph, Manitowoc, John, Fond du Lac and Alex, Kiel; four sisters, Mrs. Joseph Dorn, and Mrs. Hubert Kerch, both of R. 1, New Holstein, Mrs. Arthur Evenson, R. 1, Valders, and Mrs. Leona Daun, Kiel. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with the Rev. George Kiefer, pastor, celebrating the requiem Mass preceded by brief family rites at Meiselwitz Funeral Home at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. CLARENCE ROLOFF cemetery #44 Mr. and Mrs. Fred Roloff are mourning the death of their infant child, a babe of four months. The child was recently taken to Chicago for an operation but failed to survive the shock and illness from which it has suffered since birth. FRANK RONSPIES cemetery #89D Funeral services for Frank Ronspies, 77, of 1407-22nd St., Two Rivers, a World War I veteran and retired longtime Hamilton Mf. Co. employe, who died Saturday morning at Two Rivers Municipal Hospital, will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Two Rivers, the Rev. James Stamborski officiating. Military graveside rites will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Two Rivers. Mr. Ronspies was born at Montello, Wis., July 4, 1895, son of the late Albert and Martha Pufahl Ronspies. He married Helen Sayeski at Two Rivers June 8, 1931. He was a member of Robert E. Burns Post 165, American Legion. Besides his wife he leaves a son (Survivors omitted for privacy.); a sister, Mrs. Damion Guderski of Green Lake, Wis., and three grandchildren. A son preceded him in death.
