Phipps of the First Presbyterian church will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. The body may be viewed at the Frazier Mortuary chapel from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday. Manitowoc Herald Times, Monday, April 15, 1940 P.16 ******** JEROME PALMATER Persistence....wasn't one of the virtues of Jerome Palmater, who died on the Spencer farm in the town of Kossuth the other day at the age of 103. In 1849, at the age of 12, Jerome started for Green Bay. He stopped at Spencer's overnight. He never left-never even set his foot off the farm for the next 91 years. But even if he didn't have persistence, Jerome had one quality that most of us lack-he didn't allow his goals to blind his love of just plain living. He liked the Spencer farm, and stayed awhile. He knew Green Bay wasn't going to move away. It would be there for him any time he decided to move on. Of course that sort of acquiescence to the present doesn't build railroads or dig harbors or conquer empires, but it does bring enjoyment. It's good, in these days when ambition is the stock in trade of every Tom, Dick and Harry, to see someone who is willing to let others do the world's work while he goes about the day to day business of living. COUNTY COURT, MANITOWOC COUNTY, WISCONSIN-IN PROBATE. In the matter of the estate of Katherine Pankratz, deceased. Notice is hereby given, That at a special term of the county court to be held in and for said county at the court house in the city of Manitowoc in said county on the fifth Tuesday (being the 30th day) of May, A.D., 1916, at the opening of court on that day the following matter will be heard and considered: The application of Charles Hessel, executor of the will of Katherine Pankratz, deceased, late of Kossuth in said county, for the examination and allowance of his final account, and for the assignment of the residue of the estate of said deceased to such persons as are by law entitled there to; and for the determination and ajudication of the inheritance tax if any, payable in said estate. Dated April 26, A.D., 1916. By the Court John Chloupek, County Judge. Emil Baensch, attorney. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Friday, April 28, 1916 P.5 ******** WILL ASK COURT TO AUTHORIZE A CONTEST ON WILL Petition to be Made in Cirucit Court for Contest on Will of Late Catherine Pankratz. Now Probated Attorneys have been retained and petition will be filed in circuit court by relatives asking permission to institute a contest on the will of the late Mrs. Catherine Pankratz, whose estate has practically been settled in probate court by probating of the will and administration. The petition, it is said, will be filed by Mrs. Barbar (sic) Kellner, a sister of the decedent and other heirs may join in the case. Mrs. Pankratz died two years ago, leaving an estate valued at $11,000. Mrs. Kellner received $100 and small bequests were made to other relatives, the bulk of the estate going to the children of Charles Hessel and M. Pankratz, the former a friend and the latter a brother of the decedent. Mr. Pankratz had made her home with the Hessel family previous to death. Hessel and Pankratz were named executors of the will but two weeks after will was filed, Mr. Pankratz died, and Mr. Hessel acted as administrator. No contest was raised on the will when it was presented for probate and the estate is now settled, the administrator having filed his final accounting. Because of this fact it will be necessary for the petitioners attacking the will to secure permission from circuit court in which court the matter will be taken up. Mrs. Pankratz was an eccentric woman and at one time was adjudged insame by Judge Chloupek in probate court. Later, upon a rehearing, Judge Paul Krez of Sheboygan held that she was sane and dismissed the petition. Representatives of the firm of Martin & Martin at Green Bay who have been retained in the contest are here to institute proceedings. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Monday, May 1, 1916 P.6

STEPHEN PANOWITZ cemetery #89B Article from paper April 27, 1905 Frolic has a Sad Ending Little son of ex-alder John Panowitz of Two Rivers Probably Fatally Burned by Playing with Bonfire With his clothing in flames and his pitiful screams for help arousing every one, a little 8 year old son of ex-ald. John Panowitz of Two Rivers ran for a block to his home, and before assistance could extinguish the flames the boy's body and neck had been badly burned and he had inhaled smoke and flames that make his condition well nigh hopeless. The accident happened about one o'clock Sunday afternoon on Division Street in Two Rivers, where young Panowitz in the company with a number of other lads was busied in building a small bon fire in the street. It all happened so quickly that those who saw the occurrence have no clear recollection of just how the unfortunate lad's clothing caught fire. It is believed that while lighting matches to start the blaze the lad carelessly allowed the flames to catch his clothing. Instead of calling on his companions for aid the frightened boy started to run to his home nearly a block distant. There was a strong wind blowing at the time and fanned by this the clothes of the boy burned rapidly and when assistance finally put out the blaze young Panowitz was suffering in terrible agony. (sent in by researcher/see contributors page) ******** From Der Nord Westen, 27 Apr. 1905: (From the correspondent in Two Rivers, 24 Apr.) The 8-yr. old son of ex-Alderman Panowitz was among several children who built a fire in the street, and his clothes caught fire. His father heard his screams and quickly put out the fire by wrapping him in a tablecloth, but the child had already suffered severe burns. Drs. Currens and Christensen took him in their care, but the child died Mon. evening in terrible pain.
