CHRISTOPHER MATTE cemetery #33 Christopher "Chris" David Matte, age 41, of 2111 Crystal Springs Road, town of Two Rivers, died on Wednesday night, Feb. 6, 2008, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc. Chris was born on June 3, 1966, in Manitowoc, son of Gene Matte and Lucille Charney. He graduated from Washington High School, Two Rivers, class of 1984. Chris served our country in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Panama and Germany. He was employed at Lube Devices, Manitowoc, as a tool and dye operator. Chris was an avid hunter. He also was a member of the Westshore Sportsman Club, Two Rivers and the Vikings Bow and Gun Club, Valders. Chris especially enjoyed going to his property up north with his family and friends. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) Chris was preceded in death by his grandparents: Victor & Evelyn Charney and Clarence & Alma Matte. Funeral Services for Chris will be held at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, at the Klein and Stangel Funeral Home. Officiating at the service will be the Pastor Joe Muench, with burial on Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at Knollwood Cemetery, town of Kossuth. The family will greet relatives and friends from 3 p.m. until the time of service at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, at the funeral home. JOYCE M. MATTEK cemetery #64 Joyce Mattek, 27, formerly of Rt. 3, Two Rivers, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon at home at Milwaukee. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Two Creeks, the Rev. Percy Damrow officiating. Burial will be in Mach Cemetery. Miss Mattek was born at Kewaunee April 13, 1944, daughter of Earl and Mayme Kustka Mattek. She attended St. John Parochial School, Two Rivers, and was graduated from Mishicot Community High School with the class of 1962. She had been an employe at Glendale Convalescing Home, Milwaukee. MAYME MATTEK cemetery #64 Mrs. Earl Mattek, 59, of Rt. 3, Two Rivers, Town of Two Creeks, died unexpectedly Monday afternoon while assisting in work at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Two Creeks. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. John Church, Two Creeks, the Rev. Percy Damrow officiating. Burial will be in Mach Cememtery, Town of Mishicot. Mrs. Mattek, nee Mayme Kustka, was born Sept. 26, 1914 in the Town of Carlton, Kewaunee County, daughter of the late James and Anna Nemetz Kustka. She was married at Milwaukee to Earl Mattek June 3, 1933, and the couple farmed most of the period in the Town of Two Creeks. For several years she assisted in preparation of food at the Two Rivers Elks Club. Currently, she was president of the St. John Ladies Aid at Two Creeks. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) ARTHUR W. MATTES cemetery #84 HEAR OF MATTES DEATH Kiel—News of the death of Arthur Mattes of Greenleaf was recently received here. The deceased was a brother of Mrs. Louisa Wagenknecht and Mrs. Katie Stoll of Kiel and George Mattes of Rockville. Funeral services were held at Greenleaf Monday afternoon and burial was in the Rockville cemetery. Mrs. Wagenknecht accompanied her niece, Mrs. (private), to the funeral, but Mrs. Stoll was unable to attend because of illness. ARWIN J. MATTES cemetery #84 Injuries Fatal to A. J. Mattes Dies Thursday at Age of 22 In Hospital In Illinois Injuries he received in an auto accident early last week proved fatal at 10 p.m. Thursday to Arwin J. G. Mattes, son of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Mattes of this city. When the end came, his parents, two siters and a brother were at his bedside at the Mendota State Hospital in Illinois. The accident occurred at Walnut, Ill., where he had been making his home. Arwin, well and favorably known throughout this vicinity, was born in Kiel, Feb. 15, 1911. He attended the public schools here and was graduated from high school with the class of 1928. He attended the Sunday School of the St. Peter Reformed church here, and had been both baptized and confirmed by the late Rev. William Rech. Until last August he was employed in various cheese factories in the vicinity, learning the profession of cheese making. On August 1 he purchased a factory in Walnut, Ill., and since then had been operating it successfully. He is survived by his parents, two sisters, Miss Linda at home and Mrs. Irwin Wilson of Portage; one brother, Milton of this city; and two foster brothers, Vincent and Bobbie. A sister, Mrs. Harold Smith, passed away Dec. 22, 1926, in St. Petersburg, Fla. On Saturday afternoon brief funeral services were held at Walnut, and immediately after, the body was brought to the Mattes home here. Services were held at the home at 824 North Third street Monday afternoon at 1:30 and at 2 o'clock at the St. Peter Reformed church, the Rev. E. L. Worthman perfoming the last rites. Burial was made in the family lot at the Rockville cemetery.


ELIZABETH MATTES cemetery #84 Rockville Lady, Aged 82, Expires Suffering from an attack of bronchitis, Mrs. William Mattes, aged 82, died Thursday of last week at the home of her son Phillip east of here. Born in Niedersaulheim, Germany, Nov 5, 1842, the deceased, nee Elizabeth Muller, came to this country with her parents at the age of four years, settling in Sheboygan county. She was married Dec. 3, 1870 to William Mattes, who preceded her in death in 1906. The couple spent all their married life on the farm now operated by Phillip. Six children were born to the couple. Three who survive are Mrs. Jacob Weiskoph of Kiel, and Phillip and Miss Emma at home. One son and one daughter died in infancy, and another daughter Mrs. John Jugenheimer, preceded her in death, as did one brother and two sisters. Funeral services were held Monday of this week, with services at the home at 1:30 and at 2 o'clock at the reformed church here, the Rev. Otto Saewert being in charge of the last rites. EMMA MATTES cemetery #84 Miss Emma Mattes, 79, died at Park Lawn Home in Sheboygan Friday evening. She had been a patient there for several weeks. Miss Mattes was born in the town of Schleswig, May 19, 1876, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Mattes. Miss Mattes and her brother, Philip, who survives, operated a farm in Schleswig until June, 1944, when they moved to Kiel. Survivors also include four nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters in addition to her parents. EMMA MATTES cemetery #84 Mrs. William H. Mattes, 70, of 823 Third street, Kiel, passed away suddenly at her home Friday evening. Nee Emma Thimmig, she was born in the town of Wilson on April 16, 1882, the daughter of the late Morris and Mary Thimmig. She was married to Frank Gartman in 1902 and in 1908 re-married to William H. Mattes of the town of Schleswig. The couple lived in Rockville for a short while, but for the past 40 years she has made her home in Kiel. Mrs. Mattes was a member of the St. Peter’s Evangelical and Reformed church, the Frauen-verein of the church, the American Legion Auxiliary, Gold Star Mothers, and the Germania Society. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. I.J. (Elsie) Wilson of Edna, Texas, and Mrs. Leonard (Linda) Kraft of Manitowoc; two sons, Milton of Walnut, Ill., and Winston of Lanark, Ill.; seven grandchildren; four great grand- children; and two sisters, Mrs. Herman Gartman and Mrs. Bertha Gartman, both of the town of Wilson. Her parents, husband, one daughter, and two sons, all preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the St. Peter Evangelical and Reformed church. The Rev. E. L. Worthman will officiate, and burial will be in the Rockville cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel, from 2 p.m. Tuesday, until 11 a.m. Wednesday, when it will be removed to the church, to lie in state until the hour of services.


ESTHER L. MATTES Mrs. Esther Mattes, 81, a former Kiel resident and a resident of Willowdale Nursing Home in New Holstein for a year, died Friday evening at Calumet Memorial Hospital in Chilton, where she had been a patient for a week. The former Esther Mueller was born March 23, 1901, in the Town of Schleswig, daughter of Rudolph Mueller and Mary Esling Mueller Lindemann. She attended district school. She married Lester Mattes on Sept. 3, 1940, in Kaukauna and they resided in Kiel following marriage. Mr. Mattes died in 1957. Mrs. Mattes was employed at Christel Department Store in Kiel for many years. She was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ and was a former Sunday school teacher there. She was also a member of GUG Germania Society, Kiel Senior Citizens, and a founder of the Kiel Girl Scout troop. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Suzanne Boyle of Williamsville, NY; five grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Wilma Kenneke of Kiel and Miss Dora Nanz of Cascade. Three brothers, a step-brother and four sisters preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held Monday at St. Peter UCC in Kiel. The Rev. John Baumann, pastor, will officiate. GEORGE MATTES cemetery #84 Funeral services for George F. Mattes, 91, a retired Town of Schleswig farmer, will be held Friday at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, Kiel with the Rev. John F. Baumann pastor officiating. Mr. Mattes died Tuesday morning at the Toth Nursing Home, Chilton where he had been a resident for the past 2 1/2 years. Burial will be in Schleswig cemetery. Mr. Mattes was for in the Town of Schleswig on Oct. 5, 1877, the son of Phillip and Theresa Mattes, and married the former Mary Zorn of the Town of Schleswig. The couple farmed at Rockville for 50 years. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1954. His wife died in 1955. Mr. Mattes was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ, Kiel, a past president of the congregation, a former member of the church’s consistory, past secretary of the Schleswig Cemetery Association, and president of the Meeme Fire Insurance Co for 35 years. HENRY J. MATTES cemetery #82 Henry J. Mattes, 68, of 2103 Plymouth St., New Holstein, died unexpectedly at his home Saturday morning after an apparent heart attack. He was born May 8, 1911, at Collins, Manitowoc County, son of Herman and Minnie Duecker Mattes. The family later moved to Kiel, where he attended school. On May 10, 1941, he married Leone Lavey in Sheboygan. The couple resided in Manitowoc and Sheboygan prior to moving to New Holstein in 1958. Mr. Mattes was employed at Kohler Company until his retirement in 1973. He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, New Holstein, the New Holstein Lions Club and the Kohler Quarter Century Club. Survivors are his wife; a daughter (private); a twin brother, Philip of Kiel; two grandchildren. Two brothers and a sister preceded him in death. Funeral services will be Tuesday at St. John UCC. HERMAN MATTES cemetery #82 Kiel—On Thursday morning word was received that Herman Mattes who lives near Collins between Manitowoc and Kiel had committed suicide by taking poison. Financial problems were ruled as the cause of the tragedy. He was the son of Philip Mattes of Town Schleswig and was married to the daughter of Henry Duecher for 15 years. His is survived by his wife and 5 small children. Plymouth Post, February 21, 1914


JOHN MATTES cemetery #84 Reached Age of 62: A Former Resident of This City John A. Mattes, brother of Mrs. Albert Wagenknecht and Mrs. Katherine Stoll of this city, passed away at his home Tuesday evening at 8 o'clock, after an illness of one year. He was 62 years of age. Mr. Mattes was born April 24, 1871, in Rockville, where he grew to manhood. He was married to Miss Annie Lawrence of Kiel Jan. 10, 1900. They made their home in Kiel for five years, Mr. Mattes being employed as a carpenter. Since 1905 they lived at Collins, where Mr. Mattes owned and operated the Hotel Collins. Survivors are his wife, six children-Roland of Collins, Mrs. Elmer (Evelyn) Deffner of Collins, Armie of Sheboygan, Mrs. Thomas (Meitta) Riemer of St. Nazianz, and Orvella and John at home. Besides his two sisters here there are three brothers, George of Rockville, Philip of Thorp and Arthur of Greenleaf. LEONA MATTES cemetery #82 Mrs. Leone Mattes, 78 a former New Holstein resident, died Thursday morning, at Colony Oaks Care Center, Appleton, where she had been a resident for the past eight years. The former Leone Lavey was born May 9, 1909, in Brothertown, in Calumet County, a daughter of the late John L. and Ruby (LaPrairie) Lavey. She attended Calumet County schools. On May 10, 1941, she married Henry J. Mattes in Sheboygan. The couple lived in Sheboygan until 1958, when they moved to New Holstein. Mr. Mattes died December 15, 1979. LESTER H. MATTES cemetery #82 Lester H. Mattes Dies Suddenly Monday Morning Funeral services for Lester H. Mattes, 48, were held yesterday, Wednesday. Mr. Mattes collapsed and died at work before 8:00 a.m. Monday. He was employed at the Arps corporation plant in New Holstein. Mr. Mattes was born October 10, 1908 at Collins. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Herman Mattes. He made his home in Kiel and attended local schools. His marriage to Miss Esther Mueller, Kiel, was performed September 3, 1940, by Rev. John Scheib of Kaukauna at the Evangelical and Reformed Church, Kaukauna. Mr. Mattes was a member of the Kiel Volunteer Fire Department, and St. Peter’s Evangelical and Reformed church, and was active as a Girl Scout advisory committee member. Survivors are his wife, a daughter (private), and three brothers, Phillip J., Kiel; Henry, Sheboygan; and Woodrow, Brothertown. A sister, Mrs. Lester Meiselwitz died last December. MARY MATTES cemetery #84 Mrs. George F. Mattes of Rt. 1, Kiel, died early Friday at Memorial Hospital, Sheboygan. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the St. Peter Evangelical and Reformed Church, Kiel. The Rev. E. L. Worthman will officiate and burial will be in the Rockville Cemetery. She was born Mary Paulina Zorn at Louis Corners in 1877, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Zorn, and in 1904 was married to George F. Mattes. They located on the Mattes homestead farm in Schleswig. She was a member of the Women's Guild of the St. Peter congregation and a charter member of the Rockville Merrygoround Club. Surviving are her husband; two sons, Rudolph of Rockville and Erwin of Walnut, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Ruppenthal of Hilbert and Mrs. Ida Voigt of Collins; brother John, of Rhine; and five grandchildren. The couple observed its golden wedding in 1954. Friends may call at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel, after 2 p.m. Saturday. The casket will be moved to the church at 11:30 a.m. Sunday.


MILTON O. MATTES cemetery #84 Milton Mattes, 59, of Walnut, Ill., a native of Kiel, died Sunday at his home. He was born in Kiel Feb. 25, 1909, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William H. Mattes. About 35 years ago he moved to Walnut, where he operated a Gamble Co. store. Surviving are his wife, two daughters (private), nine grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Elsie Wilson, Austin, Tex., and Mrs. Leonard Kraft, Manitowoc, and a brother, Winston, Lena, Ill. Services will be held at Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel, with the Rev. John F. Baumann, pastor of St. Peter United Church of Christ, Kiel officiating. Burial will be in Rockville Cemetery. MINNIE (DUECKER) MATTES cemetery #82 Mrs. Mattes Laid to Rest Mrs. Minnie Mattes, who passed away unexpectedly last Sunday was laid to rest last week Wednesday afternoon in the Kiel cemetery. The Rev. Frank Zimmerman, pastor of the First Presbyterian church officiated. Mrs. Herman Jochmann conducted the services for the Royal Neighbors, of which organization Mrs. Mattes was a member. Pallbearers were Adolph Riemer, Roland Mattes, August Stoll, Rudolph Mattes, Ed. Arnold and Arthur Duecker. The lady members of the Presbyterian church choir, consisting of Miss Phyllis Jugenheimer, Mrs. R.J. Sisson, Miss Leone Stumpf, Mrs. Melvin Timm and Mrs. Edwin Duecker, rendered several anthems. The members of the Kiel Royal Neighbor lodge and the Ladies' Auxiliary of the G.U.G. Germania group attend the services in a body. The funeral of Mrs. Mattes was one of the largest ever held in this city, with many relatives and friends paying their respects. The out-of-town people at the services included the following: Mr. and Mrs. Philip Mattes and Mr. and Mrs. Keskimaki of Thoro; Mrs. and Mrs. Arthur Mattes of Greenleaf; Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Reimer of Valders; Mr. and Mrs. Lester Krueger of St. Nazianz; Mrs. Anna Mattes, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Kleist, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Deffke, John Mattes, Roland Mattes, Mr. and Mrs. Armie Mattes, all of Collins; Mr. and Mrs. August Stoll and Mr. and Mrs. Ed. OTTO J. MATTES cemetery #84 Otto J. Mattes, 75, a former town of Schleswig resident died late Thursday afternoon at the Fair Hills nursing home at Maribel, Manitowoc County. He was born Jan. 18, 1881 in the town of Schleswig a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Mattes. He never married and spent his entire life in the Schleswig area employed in farm work. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday at St. Peter Evangelical and Reformed Church, Kiel, the Rev. E. L. Worthman officiating. ROMA MATTES (d. 1957) cemetery #84 Mrs. Rudolph Mattes, 52, a resident of the Town of Schleswig, died Tuesday morning at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital after a week’s illness. Born April 11, 1905, in the Town of Schleswig, the former Roma Reichart was a daughter of the late Emil and Anna Raquet Reichart. She attended Kiel public school, was graduated from the high school in 1923, and attended a business college in Milwaukee. On July 23, 1930, she was married to Rudolph Mattes of Rockville at St. Peter Evangelical and Reformed Church in Kiel by the Rev. E. L. Worthman. The couple lived in Kiel for several years, then moved to the present farm home. At the time of her death, Mrs. Mattes was secretary of the Women’s Guild of the church, was a member of the Sewing Circle, church choir, and also secretary of the Merry Go Round Club. Survivors are her husband; two daughters, (private); a sister, Mrs. Edwin Drake of Kiel; and a brother, Eldon of Kiel. A brother also preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held Friday at St. Peter Evangelical and Reformed church at Kiel. The Rev. Vernon Jaberg will officiate and burial will be in Rockville Cemetery. ROMA MATTES (d. 1999) cemetery #84 Roma Mattes, 87, of Kiel, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999 at Friendship Manor, Kiel, where she had resided the past year. She is the former Roma Umsonst, born Feb. 4, 1912, in the Town of Schleswig, daughter of the late Frederick and Sabina Rosenthal Umsonst. She attended school in Rockville and Kiel. On April 20, 1940, she married Philip “Zup” Mattes. The couple resided in Kiel throughout their married lives. Her husband Philip preceded her in death on Jan. 20, 1998. Roma was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Kiel; the Women’s Circle of the church, the Kiel Garden Club and the former GUG Germania Society. During her life, in addition to being a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker, she worked at Siebkens Resort, Elkhart Lake; Evans Variety Store, Kiel; Salvatorian Center, New Holstein and as a dispatcher for the City of Kiel Police Department. One of her greatest joys in life were the trips she and “Zup” took to visit their children and grand- children. THERESA MATTES cemetery #84 The remains of Mrs. Philip Mattes, whose passing on June 4, 1919, was briefly mentioned in our last week issue, were interred in the Rockville Cemetery on Saturday afternoon. The funeral procession was one of the largest in the vicinity for some time, and indicated the esteem in which the deceased was held by the community where she had spent her life. Theresa Mattes, nee Franz, was born in Gotha, Saxon-Weimar Germany, April 29, 1849, coming to America about 50 years ago and located near Franklin, Sheboygan County. She was united in marriage to Philip Mattes in 1872, the couple settling on a farm near Rockville in the Town of Schleswig. Ten children were born to them, of whom seven have died. Her husband, who was a well-known Civil War veteran, preceeded her in death in 1910. Six years ago Mrs. Mattes moved to Greenleaf, to take care of the household of her son Arthur. November 28, 1918, she suffered a stroke of paralysis which rendered her completely helpless. Six months ago she was brought to Kiel, be cared for by her daughter, Mrs. Albert Wagenknecht. She passed away on Wednesday June 4th at 2 pm, reaching the age of 70 years, 1 month & 6 days. She leaves 2 sons, George of Rockville & Arthur of Greenleaf, one daughter, Mrs. Albert Wagenknecht, 2 step-sons, Philip of Thorp and John of Collins, one step-daughter, Mrs. Herman Stoll of Kiel and 28 grandchildren.


WILLIAM H. MATTES cemetery #84 W. H. Mattes Is Summoned William H. Mattes, aged 73, passed away suddenly on Saturday morning at his home. Mr. Mattes had been in ailing health for the past several months, but his demise was unexpected. He was born in the town of Schleswig on October 2, 1871, the son of Peter and Lisette Weide-Mattes. On March 28, 1908, he was married to Miss Emma Thimmig—Gartman, and the couple resided in the town of Schleswig for an additional two years before moving to this city. Mr. Mattes followed the masonry trade his entire life. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Irvin J. S. armed forces somewhere in the Philippines; seven grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Dora Thimmig, town of Wilshon, and one brother, Otto, town of Schleswig. One daughter, Mrs. Harold Smith; and two sons, Arvin and Private Robert L. Mattes, preceded him in death. Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home, and at 2 o’clock at the St. Peter Evangelical and Reformed church, with the Rev. E. L. Worthman officiating. Burial was made in the Rockville cemetery.

The deceased who had enjoyed good health, was preparing breakfast on the day of her death, when she had a heart attack and fell to the floor. Mrs. Matthaeus, nee Lindow was born on March 1, 1839 near Prenzlan in Germany and came to America in 1856 with her parents who settled on a farm in the Town of Rhine. After a few years, she married Mr. Jacob Matthaeus and the couple lived for a few years on a farm in the Town of Rhine, leaving there to move to Nordheim in Manitowoc County and then later to Kiel where they operated a store for many years. From here they moved back to Manitowoc and about three years ago back to Kiel to live with their son Wilhelm. Her husband died about two years ago. She leaves behind two sons, Wilhelm in Kiel and Friederich in New Holstein and one daughter Mrs. W.J. Guetzloe in Kiel. She reached the age of 72 years, 10 months and 18 days. She had been practically a lifelong resident of Kiel, and was closely associated with civic affairs up to the time of her death. As a young woman she had taught for three years in the public schools of Kiel. She was one of the charter members and founders of the Kiel Frauenverein, the largest and one of the oldest civic organizations in Kiel today. The deceased was born Oct. 31, 1868, on a farm in the town of New Holstein, the daughter of the late Peter and Katherine Meinert. At an early age she came to Kiel with her parents, enrolling as a student in the public schools here. Her first schooling she received in the New Holstein schools. On March 4, 1891, she was united in marriage to William Matthaeus of Manitowoc, in a ceremony performed here. Mr. Matthaeus first conducted a general store in the present Keppler building here, and later operated what is now the Kiel Roller Mill, conducting in connection a grain and feed business. Her husband preceded her in death in June 1917. Surviving her are two sisters, Mrs. Pauline Greve of this city and Mrs. Paul (Frieda) Reiss of Andes, Mont.; and one brother, John Meinert of this city. Twelve nieces and nephews also survive.

He had been employed by the C & O Railroad for 23 years retiring in 1962. He was a member of the V.F.W. and the World War I Barracks No. 2565. ALLAN J. MATTHIAS cemetery #82 Allan J. Matthias, 53, of Kiel, died Sunday morning at Calumet Memorial hospital, where he had been a patient two days. He was born February 17, 1919, in Elkhart Lake, son of the late Henry and Elizabeth Reiss Matthias and graduated from Elkhart Lake High School. On September 20, 1941, he married LaVerne Hein in Kiel and they lived in New Holstein for several years before moving to Kiel, A carpenter by trade, Mr. Matthias worked for the Herbert A. Dankwardt Construction Company in Sheboygan. He was a veteran of World War II and served overseas. He was a member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, Kiel. Mrs. Mathias died on February 19, and her death was a severe shock to him. Deceased was born in Germany on September 11, 1845, and at the age of nine years came to the United States. He settled in Liberty soon after his arrival here and was married there to May Ann Siebert in 1871. The survivors are six daughters, Mrs. H. Baryenbruch, of Newton; Mrs. G. Tegen, of Rockwood; Mrs. E. Grossheusch, of Newton; Mrs. Tollefson, of Valders; Mrs. Schienele, of Milwaukee, and another daughter, and four sons, William, who resides on the homestead at Liberty; Henry, of Cleveland; Albert at Neenah, and Irvin, of Milwaukee. Mr. Mathias leaves fifty-three descendants, including ten children, two step- brothers, one sister, Rica, whose whereabouts are unknown, 29 grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. The death of his wife had been a great shock to Mr. Mathias. Deceased was born in Germany on the eleventh day of September 1845, removed to America at the age of nine years and soon after settled in the town of Liberty where he was married to Mary Ann Siebert in 1871. Mrs. Mathias died on February 19 of the present year. The children surviving are Mrs. H. Baryenbruch of Newton, Mrs. G. Tegen, of Rockwood; Mrs. E. MARIE MATTHIAS cemetery #40 Mrs. William Matthias, 70, of Valders, collapsed and died suddenly Thursday evening while attending a band concert at Union Park in Manitowoc. A heart attack was listed as the probable cause of death. A resident of Manitowoc County her entire life. Mrs. Matthias was born April 26, 1889, in the Town of Newton, a daughter of the late John and Louise Lemke Clasen. Following her marriage on May 11, 1911 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church at Newtonburg, she and her husband operated a farm in the Town of Liberty, about four miles southeast of Valders, for 40 years. Since her husband's death last March 5, Mrs. Matthias had been making her home with a daughter, Mrs. Robert Glaeser at Valders. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in the Town of Liberty. Survivors are three sons, Arland of R. 4. Manitowoc, Vilas of Madison, and Edward on the homestead farm. R. 1. Manitowoc; three daughters, Mrs. Armin Ewald of R. 1. DANIEL R. MATTHIES cemetery #89C Daniel R. Matthies, age 74 of Two Rivers, died late Friday night, June 6, 2003 at Aurora BayCare Medical Center, Green Bay. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 11 at the Deja & Martin Funeral Chapel, Two Rivers. Msgr. John B. Dewane will officiate at the service. Burial of his cremated remains will follow in Forest View Cemetery, with military graveside rites accorded by the VFW & American Legion Post of Two Rivers. Dan was born January 16, 1929 in Two Rivers, a son of the late Solomon & Bernice (Wagner) Matthies. He attended public grade school in Two Rivers, and was a 1947 graduate of Washington High School, where he was also an accomplished athlete throughout his high school years. Dan was a retired U.S. Air Force Veteran, having served his country for 20 years, from 1947 to 1967. While serving with the Air Force, Dan attended the Kodokan Institute of Judo, in Tokyo, Japan, where he became a certified instructor to teach self defense in survival skills to many flight crews. Prior to becoming employed with Hamilton Industries in 1969, he earned an associate degree in engineering from LTI. He was employed as a draftsman with Hamilton’s from 1969 until 1984 when health problems forced him to retire. His most memorable moments after retirement came when he would attend each of his grandchildren’s sporting events. He truly was the #1 fan of his grandkids. He was an avid golfer, and enjoyed photography. He is a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Two Rivers Historical Society, and the Two Rivers Senior Center. Danny was married to Lois Nate on January 3, 1952 in Two Rivers. Lois was retired from Suettinger Hardware in Two Rivers; she also volunteered many hours at the Washington House and St. Vincent de Paul Society. She was a member of the Two Rivers Senior Center, Two Rivers Historical Society, and an active member in the Red Hat Society. Lois was the No. 1 fan of her grandkids sporting events, attending all home games for football, basketball, baseball and hockey. LEO C. MATZKE cemetery #89C Leo C. Matzke, age 89, of Two Rivers, died Thursday morning, November 5, 1998, at Theda Clark Medical Center, Neenah. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, November 9, 1998, at Calvary Lutheran Church, Two Rivers. Rev. Kim Henning will officiate at the service with burial to follow at Forest View Cemetery, Two Rivers. Leo was born July 2, 1909, in Forestville, Wis., son of the late Ernst and Wilhelmina Neinas Matzke. He was a 1927 graduate of Washington High School, Two Rivers, and then attended the Elgin Watchmaking College in Elgin, Ill. On April 29, 1939, he married Erma E. Ehlers, in Chippewa Falls. Leo served with the United States Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1945. Aviation Machinists Mate Instrument (AMMI) Matzke spent 17 months with CASU-41 in the South Pacific during the war. Mr. Matzke began working as a watchmaker for E.A. Meckelberg before opening his own jewelry business- Matzke Jewelers. He and his wife owned and operated the jewelry store in Two Rivers until 1963. He was then employed with Paragon Electric Company for a number of years and later worked for Bast Jewelers and Richmond Engraving until retiring at the age of 75. Leo was a very proud charter member of the Two Rivers Lions Club where he held each office including past president in 1955. He was also recognized for being a 50 year member of the club. Leo was also recently recognized for being a 50 year member of the V.F.W. Post #1248 of Two Rivers. He was a long time member of the Masonic Lodge and a long time member of Calvary Lutheran Church. Mr. Matzke also enjoyed music. He was a founding member of the Meckelberg Ensemble and a former member of the Hamilton Band. Leo was also the First Jr. Rotarian in the Nation. ALLEN R. MATZNICK cemetery #85 Allen R. Matznick, 35, of 17611 Matznick Road, Kiel, was pronounced dead at Holy Family Hospital in Manitowoc, Wednesday, after suffering a heart attack at his home. He was born May 2, 1949, in Sheboygan, a son of Ralph and Eldora Schnell Matznick. He graduated from Kiel High School in 1966. He served in the U.S. Army 1969-71. Following discharge from the army, he lived in the Town of Schleswig and was employed by Tecumseh Products of New Holstein. Later he formed a partnership with his brother operating a tavern in Marytown until 1980. (Survivors omitted for privacy) The funeral will be Friday at 8 p.m. at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home in Kiel. Cindy Munger, assistant to the pastor at St. Peter United Church of Christ in Kiel, will officiate. Burial will be in Ucker Road Cemetery in the Town of Schleswig.

ELDORA MATZNICK cemetery #85 Mrs. Ralph C. Matznick, 61, of R. 2, Kiel, died unexpectedly Thursday afternoon at her home. Death was attributed to an apparent-heart attack. The former Eldora Schnell was born Aug. 30, 1908 in the Town of Schleswig, a daughter of the late Otto and Ida Voss Schnell. On Dec. 28, 1927, she married Ralph Matznick of the Town of Schleswig. The couple operated a farm in the township until retiring one year ago. (Survivors omitted for privacy) Two sons preceded her in death. FERDINAND MATZNICK cemetery #78 Ferdinand A. Matznick, 75, of 501 N. Main St., Brillion, died Friday at Calumet Memorial Hospital, Chilton, following a short illness. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Collins. The Rev. Kenneth Edenhauser will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Matznick was born Jan. 29, 1896, in the Town of Rantoul, son of the late Ferdinand and Wilhemine Liebziet Matznick. He married Lillian Dreger July 13, 1921, at Collins. The couple farmed in the Town of Rockland until 1941 when they moved to Brillion. His wife preceded him in death in 1969. He was employed at Brillion Iron Works. He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Marne (Beatrice) Krueger, of Collins; two brothers, William, of Brillion and Otto, of Rt. 1, Kiel; a sister, Mrs. Albert Schneider, of Howards Grove; and two grandchildren. A son, two sisters and four brothers preceded him in death.
