VIOLET MASSMANN cemetery #43 4 YEAR OLD VIOLET MASSMAN KILLED UNDER AUTOMOBILE ON WASHINGTON ST. SUNDAY Child Rushes from Walk and Collides With Machine and is Thrown Under It— Skull Fractured and Death Comes a Few Minutes Later Another automobile tragedy marked the passing of the annual Labor day holiday in the city, Little Violet, four year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Massman, 921 South Eighteenth street, being the victim of the fatality. The child died as a result of injuries sustained early Sunday when she was struck by an automobile driven by Edgar Miller, son of P.A. Miller, when she ran into the machine while crossing the street at Eighteenth and Washington streets. The child was thrown under the wheels and died at the hospital after having been picked up unconscious. Mr. Miller, aged 22, was driving a Reo car and accompanied by Erwin Pentzien, a friend, and was going east on Washington street as the Massman child, in company of her aunt, Miss Anna Massman, was returning to her home from a meat market near by. At Eighteenth and Washington the child pulled away from Miss Massman and rushed into the street, colliding with the running board of the automobile and being thrown under the car. The machine, according to eye witnesses was not proceeding at a high rate of speed and was stopped by Mr. Miller within a few feet of the spot at which the child collided with it. Mr. Miller and Luis Bull who witnessed the accident, picked the child up and she was taken in Mr. Miller’s car. At Twelfth street Dr. G.W. Patchen who was driving by was summoned and directed that the little girl be taken to the hospital. The child lived about twenty minutes after reaching the hospital. It was found that her skull had been fractured. It is believed that in colliding with the machine the little girl was struck by the fender and sustained the fracture as she was thrown to the ground under the car. Mr. Miller is exonerated from blame for the accident by eye witnesses who say that the little girl evidently did not see the machine coming and rushed into it and that the driver was unable to avoid the collision. Mr. and Mrs. Massman exonerate Mr. Miller. The funeral was held this morning. The sympathy of the community will be extended to the parents and to Mr. Miller. Labor day a year ago witnessed the tragedy at the Two Rivers crossing of the Northwestern in which four met death in an automobile accident when their car was run down by a train. JACOB MATEK cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 29 Jan. 1899: Death yesterday morning of Jacob Matek after a long illness with the dreaded "strangulation" consumption. He was born in Prussian Poland in 1863 and came to Manitowoc with his parents in 1868. As he was growing up he worked in the Schuette Bros. store and was employed there for 15 years. Later he took over the Delmonico Saloon, sold that and shortly thereafter moved to Milwaukee. He fell sick there and returned to spend his final days here. In addition to his parents he is survived by his widow and three children. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning from St. Boniface Church. ********* LIFE'S JOURNEY O'ER. Jacob Matek Released From all Earthly Suffering at an Early Hour To-day. HAD BEEN ILL OVER A YEAR. For Over Three Months He has Suffered Intensely and Death Was a Messenger of Peace. Death released Jacob Matek from earthly suffering at an early hour this morning at his home, 1205 Hamilton street. For more than three months he has suffered intensely, tossing upon his couch, his body wracked with agonies of pain and life swaying in the balance with the odds in favor of the grim destroyer. But the struggle is over, death has been victorious and one more victim has been added to the long list of those who have joined the silent majority. Jabob (sic) Matek was a young man and his death will cause keen sorrow to many who possessed his acquaintance. For more than fifteen years he was employed as salesman at Schuette Bros.' store and was a faithful and industrious employe. Later he engaged in the grocery business for himself and won many friends by his fair and honorable methods. For a number of years he has not been healthy and about a year ago he was compelled to give up the active pursuits of life and retire. He was afflicted with consumption and during the past three months has been confined to his bed. Deceased was born in the old country in 1863 and came to America when but five years of age. He located in this city where he has since resided. He was married to Miss Bertha Kurth in 1886 and three children, two sons and one daughter, were born to them. The sympathy of the entire community will be extended to the little family in this, their sad hour of affiliction. No recent death in the community has called forth such universal sympathy as that of Jacob Matek. Personally he was a genial, whole souled man, social and jovial; quick to make friends and slow to make enemies. He was a faithful, considerate husband, a kind, generous father, and an upright, honorable and useful citizen. Upon his family the heaviest blow must fall, but his hearty frank manner and genial disposition will be mourned by many who have numbered him among their friends. His life work is o'er. Freed from its withered pain wrecked tenement, his spirit has passed from earthly scenes. Let us beleive that in the world beyond he enjoys the results of a life work well done, and pain and earthly sorrow are forgotten amid the joys of eternal life. The funeral will be held from St. Boniface church Friday morning. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Manitowoc, Wis. JESSIE MATHES cemetery #82 Daughter of Pioneer Settlers Laid to Rest Here Wednesday Mrs. Mathes Reaches Age of 64 Years Rev. F. Zimmerman Conducts Burial Rites This community was shocked Monday morning, when it learned of the death of Mrs. George Mathes, aged 64, wife of Dr. George Mathes of this city. Mrs. Mathes had been in ill health for several moths, and for a short time, several weeks ago, was confined to Columbia hospital in Milwaukee. Mrs. Mathes was the type of person who never complained about her illness, always trying to cheer others, that is one reason why residents here did not realize how serious her illness was. She died at 12:52 a.m. Monday, January 14, 1940, at her home at 513 Fourth Street. Mrs. Mathes was born Jessie Krieger, in this city May 27, 1875, the daughter of the late pioneer settlers, Ferdinand and Elfriede Krieger, who many years ago operated a general store here approximately fifty years. The deceased received her early education in the local public school, and graduated from the Kiel high school with the class of 1889. She also took a one year post graduate course in the local high school in 1889. December 27, 1900, she was united in marriage with Dr. George Mathes of the town of Russell. Following their marriage they moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where Dr. Mathes attended the medical college for two years. CHARLES MATHIESEN cemetery #89A It will be only a few more years and the last of the Veterans of the Civil War will have been called to the Great Beyond. Charles Matthiesen, who, when a sturdy and patriotic youth shouldered his musket to fight for the preservation of the Union and the freedom of the land, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W.A. Tomek Tuesday of last week at the age of 91. When he returned from the war his health was impaired, but he regained his strength by hard work on his farm, near Carlton, Kewaunee County. He was a staunch pioneer farmer and withstood the trials and tribulations of early days. Only those who had the experience realize what labor and determination it required to clear away the forests and clear the soil for agriculture. Deceased was a member of Company K, 27th Wisconsin Infantry and saw service in Arkansas, Louisiana and Alabama during the war. Charles Matthiesen came to this country from Germany seventy years ago. For a time he was employed in the lumbering industry and later worked on his brother's farm in the town of Mishicot. IRA MATHIESEN cemetery #63 (The following was sent in by a family member/see contributors page) I was looking through your Manitowoc geneology website and in a section called "Manitowoc Deaths Not in the Cemeteries" I found the name of a relative of mine that I knew - Ira Mathiesen (two of my great great grandmothers were Mathiesens). There was a note requesting information on the individuals. Ira is buried in the Holy Cross II Cemetary in Mishicot. He is in a gravesite with his parents, Agnes and Richard who appeared in your Holy Cross II index. Also buried with him are two of his brothers, Otto, George, a third male I can't remember the name of who from the age must have been another brother, along with his twin sisters Lucy and Anne. Ira, George, Otto, Lucy and Anne all lived on a farm together on Lake Michigan just north of the town of Two Creeks. When I was a kid a highlight of our vacations to Wisconsin was a trip to the Mathiesens' farm to see the cows, pigs and horses. My grandfather, another Ira - Ira Johnson, always made sure we stopped by. Ira Mathiesen was the oldest of the five and never learned to drive a car or a tractor. When he was still working the farm (they got bought out by the nuclear power plants) he still used a team of work horses. He liked to brag that he had the last team of working horses in the county and one of the last in the state. None of the five Mathiesens on the farm ever got married, but another brother who must be buried somewhere else, Earl (I think thats right) moved to town (believe it was Two Rivers) and had lots of kids so there are probably lots of Mathiesen relatives around the county yet. I hope this information proves useful. If you would like any additional information please email me and hopefully I will be able to help you.

LARS MATHISEN cemetery #2 From Der Nord Westen, 27 Aug. 1908: Death Tuesday in Town Manitowoc Rapids of Lars Mathieson at the advanced age of almost 94 in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Nels Anderson. Mr. Mathieson, who came to Manitowoc more than 55 years ago, was one of the earliest subscribers of Nord-Westen despite his Norwegian origin. Each autumn he came into our office and paid his renewal for another year. However, this year he wrote us a note instead that due to the fact that his eyesight had gotten so weak he couldn’t read anymore. When he made his regular visits and we congratulated him on his advanced age, he’d shake his head and say “It’s no great joy to be so old if one has comparatively good health. One finds himself alone, even though in the company of his children, because the old friends which understood him are all gone, and the new generation has its new ideas and new ideals.” We couldn’t prove him wrong and now he has gone to his rest. The funeral will be Saturday in Rapids.
