ADOLPH LETTENBERGER (d. 1937) cemetery #21 DIES SATURDAY IN MILWAUKEE Services for Adolph Lettenberger To Be At St. Nazianz Adolph Lettenberger, 78, St. Nazianz, died Saturday evening in the St. Joseph's hospital, Milwaukee, where he had been a patient for the past five weeks. Mr. Lettenberger underwent three operations several weeks ago and was apparently recovering. He contracted pneumonia, however, which caused his death. Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock from the St. Gregory's Catholic church, St. Nazianz. Burial will be made in the adjoining cemetery. Born at St. Nazianz Mr. Lettenberger was born at St. Nazianz August 30, 1859. He was married June 24, 1884 to Ida Weinkoetz. For about two years after his marriage Mr. Lettenberger was employed as a blacksmith. Then he operated a tavern for 16 years and finally moved to a small farm outside the village limits. For the past 20 years he has been field boss for the St. Nazianz Pea Canning company. He served for a time as treasurer of the town of Eaton. He was a member of the Holy Name society of the St. Gregory's church. The society will attend the services in a body Tuesday and will meet at the home this evening at 8 o'clock to say the rosary. Widow Survives Survivors include the widow; two sons, Theodore of Valders and Edmund of St. Nazianz; three daughters, Mrs. Eleanor Kelm, Milwaukee, Mrs. Frieda Kretsch, Kiel, and Mrs. Elizabeth Heimer of Adams, Minn.; a sister, Mrs. George Streicher of Milwaukee; three brothers, John of Manitowoc; Dr. Joseph Lettenberger of Milwaukee and Peter of California; and 12 grandchildren. The body will lie at the home until the time of the services Tuesday. He underwent three operations several weeks ago and apparently was recovering when he was stricken with pheumonia. Mr. Lettenberger was born at St. Nazianz August 30, 1859. He was married June 24, 1884, to Ida Weinkoetz, and for about ten years after his marriage he was employed as a blacksmith. Then he operated a tavern for 16 years and finally moved to a small farm outside the village limits. ALPHONSE A. LETTENBERGER cemetery #43 Alphonse A. Lettenberger, 69, of 1417 Columbus St., Manitowoc, died late Saturday morning at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. He had been a patient there for five days. Funeral services will be 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, and at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic church, the Rev. D.L. Krembs officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mr. Lettenberger was born Aug. 4, 1893, at St. Nazianz, son of the late John and Hermina Weinhoetz Lettenberger. He married Marie Larger on January 15, 1918 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The couple established its home here. He was employed as a malster at Rahr Malting Co, retiring five years ago. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Andrew Catholic church and of the Brewers and Malsters Union of Manitowoc. Mr. Lettenberger was a World War I veteran, serving in France. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. R. L. DeCesare of Philadelphia, Pa.; four sons, John of Brookfield, Paul of Milwaukee, Sfc. Thomas of Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif and Sgt. George of Korea; two brothers, Herman of Kiel and Norbert of Manitowoc and 11 grandchildren. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home where the Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Monday by the Holy Name Society of St. Andrew Catholic church, members of the parish and friends.

HERBERT LETTENBERGER cemetery #44 Herbert Lettenberger, 58, of 1515 S. 14th St., Manitowoc, died Monday afternoon at the Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, following a three months illness. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home, Manitowoc, and at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Henry Letz will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. He was born March 12, 1897, at St. Nazianz, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Lettenberger, and in 1916 his parents moved to Manitowoc to take over the Glenn Inn. He was a veteran of World War 1. On June 15, 1922, he married Miss Erma Bieberitz. Until taken ill he was employed at the Aluminum Goods Mfg Co. He was a member of the Drews-Bleser post of the American Legion and the Manitowoc aerie of Eagles. Surviving are his wife; daughter of Nyack, N. Y.; three brothers, Herman of Kiel, Norbert, his twin brother, and Alphonse of Manitowoc; sister, Mrs. Edward Auermiller of Manitowoc. HERMAN LETTENBERGER cemetery #83 Herman A. (Libba) Lettenberger, 78, 520 Fremont Street, Kiel, died Thursday evening at Calumet Memorial Hospital in Chilton, where he had been a patient for three weeks. Mr. Lettenberger was born August 29, 1905, in Valders, son of John and Hermina Weinkoetz Lettenberg. He attended school in Kiel. Mr. Lettenberger and the former Alvira Klauck were married July 6, 1929, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Kiel. The couple lived in Kiel, where for 35 years Mr. Lettenberger was chief of the City of Kiel Fire Department. He retired in 1970. He was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Kiel, its Holy Name Society, and the Catholic Order of Foresters. Surviving are his wife; four sons; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grand- children. A funeral Mass was held Monday at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Kiel. The Reverend John De Groot, pastor of Chilton Catholic Interparish, celebrated the Mass. HERMINA LETTENBERGER cemetery #43 Lettenberger Rites Held This Morning Funeral services for Mrs. John Lettenberger, 69, who died late Friday afternoon were held today at 9 a. m., from the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home and at 9:30 from the Sacred Heart church. Interment was in Calvary cemetery. Mrs. Lettenberger, whose maiden name was Hermina Weintgoetz, was born at St. Nazianz in 1867 and married John Lettenberger there in 1892. Twenty-two years ago they moved to this city. Survivors are the widower; a daughter, Mrs. Edward Auermiller, city; five sons, Alphonse, Max, Norbert and Herbert, all of this city, Herman, Kiel; a sister, Mrs. Adolph Lettenberger, St. Nazianz; and 10 grandchildren.


IDA LETTENBERGER cemetery #21 Mrs. Lettenberger Of New Holstein Called To Rest New Holstein-(Special)- Mrs. Ida Weinkoetz Lettenberger, 75, died at 4:30 o'clock this morning at the house of her daughter, Mrs. A.E. Kelm, city. She was born Dec. 19, 1863, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Weinkoetz, in St. Nazianz. On June 24, 1884, she married Adolph Lettenberger, who died two years ago. She lived her entire life in St. Nazianz, except for the past two and a half years which she spent with her daughter. Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Kelm, Mrs. Frank Kretsch, Kiel, and Mrs. Joe Heimer, Adams, Minn.; two sons, Peter of Valders and Edmund of St. Nazianz; 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Christian Mothers' sodality, St. Nazianz. Funeral services are planned for Saturday morning at 9:30 o'clock at St. Gregory's church, St. Nazianz, the Rev. F. Holzknecht officiating, with interment in the adjoining cemetery. The body was taken to the Kellenbenz Funeral home St. Nazianz, where it can be viewed from Thursday on. E. Kelm at New Holstein. The deceased was born December 19, 1863, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Weinkoetz of St. Nazianz. On June 24, 1884, she was united in marriage with Adolph Lettenberger, who preceded her in death two years ago. Since that time she has been living with Mrs. Kelm. The rest of her life was spent in St. Nazianz. Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. A. E. Kelm of New Holstein, Mrs. Frank Kretsch of this city, and Mrs. Joseph Heimer of Adams, Minnesota; two sons, Peter of Valders and Edmund of St. Nazianz; 19 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. JOHN LETTENBERGER cemetery #43 Former Kiel Resident Passes Away Feb. 1 John Lettenberger, father of Herman Lettenberger of this city, was called to rest last Wednesday night following a brief illness at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edward Auermiller at Manitowoc, where he had been residing. The deceased was born in St. Nazianz in 1869, the son of Adolph and Elizabeth Sprang-Lettenberger. In 1893 he was married to Miss Hermina Weinkoetz who preceded him in death in 1936. For several years they conducted a hotel in the building which now houses the Co-op Food store, Hayner Barber shop and Denny's tavern. They also operated a hotel in Valders before going to Manitowoc where they managed the Glenn Inn for a number of years. Following that he was employed by the Aluminum Goods Mfg. Co. in that city. Survivors are his daughter, Mrs. Auermiller; four sons, Alphonse, Herbert and Norbert, all of Manitowoc, and Herman of this city; a brother, Dr. Joseph Lettenberger of Milwaukee; 14 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at the Sacred Heart Catholic church, with the Rev. L. M. Schorn officiating. Burial took place in the Calvary cemetery.


MARIE LETTENBERGER cemetery #43 Marie M. Lettenberger, age 95, a resident of Shady Lane Home, Manitowoc, died Saturday afternoon, September 17, 1994, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 21, 1994, at the Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, and 10 a.m. at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. James Stamborski with burial to follow in the Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc. The former Marie Larger was born June 11, 1899, in Racine, daughter of the late Albert and Josephine Vegrich Larger. She married Alphonse A. Lettenberger, January 15, 1918, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Manitowoc. He preceded her in death March 23, 1963. Mrs. Lettenberger was a charter member of St. Andrew Catholic Church and the St. Therese Society of the church. She was also a member of the Catholic Women's Club and the Senior Citizens of Manitowoc. Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, John and Leona Lettenberger, Brookfield, Wis., Paul and Audrey Lettenberger, Bella Vista, Ark., Thomas and Ruby Lettenberger, Santa Marie, Calif., George and Susan Lettenberger, Manitowoc; 19 grandchildren, 15 great-grand- children; a special friend, Norbert Schwoerer, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. She was also preceded in death by an infant son, a daughter, Patricia DeCesare, a sister, Anna Hady and a brother, Edward Larger. NORBERT LETTENBERGER cemetery #44 Norbert Lettenberger, 72, of 1402 S. 11th St., Manitowoc, died Tuesday at the family residence. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Pfeffer Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The Very Rev. Msgr. Alfred Schneider will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc, with military graveside services by the American Legion. Mr. Lettenberger was born March 12, 1897, at St. Nazianz, son of the late John and Hermina Woenketz Lettenberger. He married Hilma Isselman June 27, 1927, at St. Boniface Church, Manitowoc. He had been a foreman at Mirro Aluminum Rolling Mill when he retired in 1962. He was a member of the American Legion, the Mirro Twenty-five Year Club and the St. Boniface Holy Name Society. He was also a Veteran of World War I, serving with the U.S. Navy. Survivors include his wife; a son, two daughters, a brother, Herman of Kiel, and 14 grandchildren. A sister and three brothers preceded him in death. A six months old son, born since Mr. Lettenberger departed for service, died at the Glenn Inn last evening and the father will not see his babe. Mrs. Lettenberger has made her home with her parents here since her husband’s departure. The babe had been ill only a few hours. The deceased had lived for many years with August Pasewalk in the 1st Ward of Manitowoc. She had been born 12 June 1812 in Schoenhagen near Stettin. ALVINA LEUBNER cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 15 Jan. 1891: Death on Sun. morning, after a long and terrible illness, of Mrs. Alvine Leubner, a long time resident of our city. She was born 27 July 1820 in Chemnitz, married Mr. Ernst Leubner in her 30th year and came with him and her eldest son to America in her 50th year. They settled here in Manitowoc where Mr. Leubner established a drugstore. In 1874 she suffered the loss of her son Otto who was studying the druggist business in his father’s store. Also in 1881 she lost her only daughter, just to have her husband follow soon after. She was ill several weeks preceding her death. Her funeral took place on Tues. in the city cemetery. Of her two surviving sons, the eldest, Paul, lives in Minneapolis and the other, Alfred, is in business here.


OTTO LEUBNER Manitowoc Tribune February 20, 1874, Vol. 20 No. 52, Page 4 Column 5 Died. Leubner - Otto Leubner, the youngest son of Dr. E. Leubner, of this city, died at the residence of his father-in-law, Hon. Chas. Esslinger, on Monday, the 16th of February last, of Consumption, at the age of 27 years, 10 months and 6 days. The deceased was a native of Saxony came to this city with his parents some twenty three years ago, since which time he has resided here constantly. He leaves a lovingly devoted wife, who was married to him less than a year; his aged parent, to whom he was a faithful son and his two brothers and a sister who all loved him for his goodness and constant devotion to their mutual contentment and interest, besides a host of friends, to whom he has endeared himself by his gentleness and reliability. The funeral will take place this (Friday) afternoon at 2 o'clock.

ANNA LEVANETZ cemetery #89D Mrs. Henry Levanetz, 73, nee Anna Hallada, died Friday night at the Two Rivers Municipal hospital. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Luke's church, Two Rivers, with burial in Holy Cross cemetery. She was born in Bohemia in 1873 and came here when a girl to live with an uncle, Vincent Hallada, in Two Creeks. She was married to Henry Levanetz in Two Rivers in 1907. Since the death of her husband three years ago Mrs. Levanetz had lived with her only daughter, Mrs. Norman Ringmeier, 1717 22nd street, Two Rivers. In addition to the daughter she is survived by a sister and four grandchildren. Levenetz(sic), 74, a resident of Two Rivers for the past 35 years, died Saturday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Arthur Luebke, on Roosevelt Ave. Two daughters, Mrs. Luebke and Mrs. Grimmer and three sons, Henry of this city, Louis of Milwaukee and John of Whitewater survive. The body was taken to the Beduhn and Goetz chapel where it remained until this noon, and burial will take place tomorrow morning at nine o'clock from St. Mark's church. Rev. Nilles officiating. Levendusky Suffering his third stroke within a year late last evening, John Levendusky, aged 56, passed away at this home at 1213 South Twentieth street. The first attack was suffered little less than a year ago, the second one last Thanksgiving day and the stroke that took his life came last night. The deceased with her husband moved to this city from Mishicot 15 years ago. Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. from the Pfeffer funeral home, and the remains will be taken to the Mishicot cemetery for interment. The body is now at the funeral home where it may be viewed up to the hour of the funeral. The deceased, whose maiden name was Bertha Quistorf, was born in the town of Mishicot in 1872. She was married there 40 years ago to Henry Levenhagen and they took up their residence at Mishicot where Mr. Levenhagen was a carpenter. Mr. Levenhagen was born in Mecklenburg in 1821 and came to Manitowoc in 1855 where he has lived ever since. He formerly operated a fishery here but gave it up as old age approached. GEORGE LEVENHAGEN cemetery #44 George H. Levenhagen, retired agent for the Chicago & North Western railroad here, died at 1 o'clock this morning at his home, 915 Madison street, after a lingering illness. Mr. Levenhagen, who had been in the employ of the company for 40 years, 25 of these being station agent, had been living a retired life for the past two and a half years. The body was removed to the Pfeffer funeral home, and will lie in state there after 10 a.m. Friday. Saturday morning, brief rites will be held at the funeral home, followed by a requiem mass at St. Boniface with the Rev. Alfred Pritzl as celebrant. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. Born in Manitowoc on June 14, 1881, Mr. Levenhagen always reside in this city. On June 14, 1909, he was united in marriage with Helen Heise, who survives with one son, Melvin, also of Manitowoc. HEINRICH C. LEVENHAGEN cemetery #63 From Der Nord Westen, 06 Aug. 1896: (From the correspondent in Mishicott, 03 Aug.) Death last Thurs., 31 July, of H. C. Levenhagen. He was born 21 Sept. 1824 in Varchentin, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, and married in Dec. 1846. In 1853 he came with his wife and 2 sons to America, first settling in Trenton, N.J., then 3 yrs. in Canada, coming to Mishicott in 1856 where he lived 3 yrs., then moving to Kewaunee. In former years he worked as a miller, but since 1876 has been in the saloon business. He is survived by his wife, 7 sons, 3 daughters, 35 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. His funeral took place last Sun. afternoon in the local cemetery attended by a large crowd. Fritz Levenhagen of Wausau, and Mrs. Mathilde Olfs (nee Levenhagen) of Medford, stayed here a few days after attending their father’s funeral.

HENRY LEVENHAGEN cemetery #63 RESIDENT OF COUNTY SIXTY YEARS IS DEAD Henry Levenhagen, pioneer resident of Mishicot, where he had made his home for sixty years, died at the hospital last night at the age of 75 years. Mr. Levenhagen had been ill for six weeks. His death will come as a shock to friends. Mr. Levenhagen was born in Germany and emmigrated with his parents when a child of four years. The family locating at Quebec and later coming to Manitowoc County, residing at Tisch Mills and later at Mishicot. In early days Mr. Levenhagen operated a sawmill at Mishicot. Four children survive Mr. Levenhagen, being Henry Jr. and Walter at Mishicot; Mrs. Braun of Madison, and Mrs. A.H. Zander of this city. Four brothers and three sister also survive, Louis of Mishicot, Fred of Wausau, Ernst of Tacoma, and Ira of Rockford and Mrs. Julius Lindstedt, this city; Mr. H. HENRY C. LEVENHAGEN (d. 1920) FIRST FLORIST OF CITY DEAD AT RIPE OLD AGE 84 H. Levenhagen, Sr., Passes Away Suddenly at Milwaukee Henry Levenhagen, Sr., pioneer gardener of the city who established the first greenhouses and for many years was engaged as a florist, died in Milwuakee yesterday at the advnced age of 84 years. News of Mr. Levenhagen's death came in messages to relatives containing announcement that the body would be shipped here today for burial. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 from the home of Gust Levenhagen, 1211 So. Twelfth street. Mr. Levenhagen passed away at the home of his daughter in Milwaukee. He had contracted a cold but appeared to be improving when he was suddenly stricken. Despite his advanced age Mr. Levenhagen had enjoyed robust health up to a short time ago. Born in Mecklenburg, Germany, April 24, 1836, Mr. Levenhagen came to Manitowoc county in 1856 to join two brothers who had preceded him here. Later he located to St. Louis where he was married and with his wife returned here in 1858, engaging in business, building the first greenhouse the city had on a site on Madison street between Eighth and Ninth streets. Some time later Mr. Levenhagen purchased property and built a home and greenhouses on So. Tenth street on site of the present plant of the Rudolph company. His business prospered and was extended and continued until age caused him to retire. Mrs. Levnehagen preceded her husband in death eight years ago, passing away May 5, 1912. Four children, three sons and one daughter survive Mr. Levenhagen, Herman Levenhagen and Mrs. W.J. Schaefer, Milwaukee, Gust and Henry of this city. Eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren also survive. ALLEN C. LEVERENZ cemetery #80 Allen C Leverenz, 93, formerly of New Holstein, died Wednesday evening, September 12, 2007 at Calumet Rehabilitation Center, New Holstein. He was born September 7, 1914 in the Town of Charlestown, son of the late Orin and Katie Persohn Leverenz. Allen attended Lowell Country School and was a graduate of New Holstein High School. On October 6, 1938 he married Lydia Tamm at Bethel United Methodist Church. Allen farmed in the Town of Charlestown retiring on December 7, 1979. After retirement he continued to remain active farming. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, a member of the County Board for 25 years, Town Board of Charlestown for many years and the New Holstein Masonic Lodge. Allen was a member of the Order Eastern Star where he was the Worthy Patron for 35 years. He enjoyed playing dartball, for many years he was a member of the Calumet County Farm Bureau and the New Holstein Men’s Chorus. ARTHUR LEVERENZ cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 04 Feb. 1909: Death of Arthur Leverenz, son of Carl Leverenz here, in Milwaukee Sunday morning of consumption. The deceased was formerly employed here by the Jones & Adams Coal Co., but moved to Milwaukee about 4 years ago. He leaves his widow and 8 children, as well as his elderly father, 3 brothers and 3 sisters. CHARLES LEVERENZ (d. 1913) cemetery #44 CARL LEVERENZ PIONEER, IS DEAD Carl Levereenz, one of the early pioners (sic) of the city and who for nearly half a century conducted a blacksmith shop on Franklin street, now in charge of his son Frank, died yesterday after a lingering illness of more than a year, death being calm and peaceful. Mr. Leverenz was 90 years of age. Coming to Manitowoc in youth, Mr. Leverenz was one of the oldest settlers here and for more than sixty years had made his residence in the city. Up to a few years ago, Mr. Leverenz continued his business and was then forced by ill health to retire. Mrs. Leverenz died eight years ago. Surviving Mr. Leverenz are five children, Mrs. R. Schenk, Milwaukee, Mrs. Hubert Falge, Mrs. Max Stauss, this city, William of California and Frank of this city. Funeral services for Mr. Leverenz will be held Friday afternoon from the late home, under auspices of Manitowoc lodge, I.O.O.F., of which he had been a member for many years. Feldt officiating and interment was made in the cemetery at Meggers. Charles Christian Leverenz was born at Charlestown, Sept, 27, 1864 and grew to young manhood in that vicinity. On November 8, 1888, he was united in marriage with Miss Alma Reichert, who preceded him in death by fifteen years. Since the time of her death, Mr. Leverenz had made his home with a son, Orin, at Meggers and passed away there Friday morning after a brief illness. He is survived by his son, Orin, two brothers, William of Waldo and George of New Holstein; three sisters, Mrs. Gust Weber of New Holstein, Mrs. Emma Reichert of Meggers and Miss Lizzie Leverenz of Kiel. LIZZIE C. LEVERENZ cemetery #80 Miss Elizabeth Caroline Leverenz, 82, of 2001 Wisconsin Ave., New Holstein, died early today at her home. Born in Town Charlestown of Feb. 3, 1876, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jochim Leverenz, and attended Lowell School in the area. Survivors are one sister, Mrs. Gustav (Emily) Weber of Appleton and 17 nieces and nephews. Four brothers and two sisters also preceded her in death. She was a member of Bethel Methodist Church at Meggers where funeral services will be held. The Rev. Fred Thomas, acting pastor, will officiate and burial will be in Pilgrim’s Rest Cemetery. MINNIE LEVERENZ cemetery #80 Mrs. Wilhelmina Leverenz, a former resident of this village, passed away at the St. Nicholas hospital, Sheboygan, Tuesday afternoon at six o’clock, while visiting her grandson, Clifford Weber who is a patient there. She had been with the patient but a few minutes when she complained of feeling uneasy about the chest and fainted away in a chair. She was placed in bed in an adjoining room where she died two hours later. Death was due to heart failure. Mrs. Leverenz was born February 9, 1840. In Germany and came to this country in 1860, settling on a farm in New Holstein. After having made her home there for thirty-five years, she moved to the village where she lived until three years ago when her husband died. Since that time she had resided at Sheboygan. On Feb. 2, 1861, she was united in marriage to Joachim Leverenz at Fond du Lac. The remains were brought to this village Thursday morning and placed in the German Methodist cemetery at Meggers. She was a faithful church member and even after moving to New Holstein she in company with her husband drove out to Meggers to attend church. Survivors are four sons, H. F. Leverenz, Sheboygan, Charles and George, New Holstein, and William of Waldo, and three daughters, Mrs. Gustave Weber, Mrs. J. Reichardt, New Holstein, and Miss Lizzie at home. There is also one brother, Fred Bastian, Forest Junction, and one sister Mrs. William Schmidt, Kansas Calumet County Reporter, May 5, 1916


OLGA LEVERENZ cemetery #44 Miss Olga Leverenz died at the family home at 1625 South Fifthteenth steet Monday evening following a brief illness. Death was due to flu pneumonia and followed an attack of but three days. Deceased was born in this city and has always made her home here. Since the death of her father, the late Fred Leverenz, she and a brother Edward have been keeping house at the family home. The brother is the only surviving member of the family. Miss Leverenz was 38 years of age. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon from the Vogelsang undertaking parlor at 1:30 with service at the German Lutheran church at 2 o'clock by Rev. SOPHIA LEVERENZ cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 26 May 1904: Death Sat. morning of Mrs. Carl Leverenz, after a long illness, of old age debility. The deceased was born Sophie Kansier on 23 Feb. 1825 in Siekow, Mecklenburg-Schwerin and married Carl Leverenz 25 Mar. 1843. The couple came to America in 1851 and traveled to Milwaukee via Canada, stayed there about 6 weeks and then came to Manitowoc where they have lived ever since. Here they overcame all the difficulties and troubles of the pioneer life and enjoyed the highest admiration of their fellow citizens. In March last year the couple celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary. The inroads of age increased over the last year until she closed her tired eyes in death last Sat. Her husband, who celebrated his 81st birthday on 01 May, has suffered a terrible blow in the loss of his life partner. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Leverenz is survived by 7 children, namely, Friedrike Schenk and Mrs. Auguste Falge in Manitowoc, Wilhelm Leverenz in San Francisco; Mrs. Henriette Staus, Carl, Frank, and Arthur Leverenz in Manitowoc.The funeral was held in the afternoon day before yesterday. ******* [bur. 05-21-1904/age 79 yrs./cause: old age] (Note: The tombstone in the photo has the wrong date on it.)


SUSAN M. LEVERENZ cemetery #80 Susan M Leverenz, 45, of W420 Danes Road, New Holstein, died Wednesday evening, March 17, 1999 at Calumet Homestead Rehabilitation Center, New Holstein, where she resided the past eleven weeks. She was born Sept. 9, 1895 in Kewaskum, foster daughter of Allen and Lydia Leverenz. She was a 1973 graduate of New Holstein High School. Susie was a laundry aid at Calumet Homestead Rehabilitation Center, New Holstein, for the past 25 years. She enjoyed baking and knitting. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Meggers, Eastern Star Chapter 262, New Holstein, and Orders of Amaranth. Friendship Court 14, Plymouth. IMOGENE LEVINSON cemetery #43 Imogene Levinson, age 74, of 6428 Reifs Mills Road, Manitowoc, entered eternal life on Sunday evening, Nov. 23, 2008, at her residence. Imogene was born on Nov. 6, 1934, in Coweata, Okla. She was the daughter of the late William and Mazie (Fitzpatrick) Maynard. Imogene had been employed at Mirro Aluminum until 1987. On April 8, 1955, she married John W. Levinson in Mesa, Ariz. He preceded her in death on April 9, 1986. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) She was preceded in death by her husband: John W. ANNA BARTA LEWIS cemetery #44 Mrs. Samuel Lewis, 65, died Monday noon at Davenport, Iowa, after being taken ill Sunday. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Mittnacht-Kolath funeral home, the Rev. Franklin C. St. Clair of the Episcopal church officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. The body may be viewed at the funeral home from Thursday morning until the time of services in the afternoon. Mrs. Lewis, nee Anna Barta, was born in Manitowoc in 1882. After her marriage in Lodi in 1913 to Samuel Lewis, the couple lived in Oak Park, Ill., and Madison. Mr. Lewis died in 1932 and Mrs. Lewis had been living with her daughter, Mrs. Howard J. Mather of Davenport. Survivors are the daughter, Mrs. Mather; son Samuel of Ann Arbor, Mich.; brother Emil Barta of Manitowoc; sisters, Mrs. Joseph Kaiser Sr., and Mrs. George M. Fechter of Manitowoc and Mrs. Henry R. Simons of Lodi, and two grandchildren. NIC. LEY cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 02 Apr. 1896: On Mon. morning some children at play near the docks of the 8th St. bridge, saw a cord hanging from a nail into the water. The curious boys started to pull on the cord, and much to their horror, found a man’s hand and then the body of a man at the end of it. Obviously the police were called immediately and the body taken to land. It was determined to be the body Nicolaus Ley, an old and well-known resident of our city. The coroner’s inquiry was conducted with a verdict of suicide. What prompted him to take his own life is unknown. What is known is that about 4 weeks ago he had traveled to Chicago to undergo an operation that may have led ultimately to his decision. He went to Chicago again last week and returned here on Tues. about 10 a.m. That is the last time he was seen. Nicolaus Ley was born 25 Nov. 1831 in Bez. Trier, Prussia. He lived over 40 yrs. in our city where he ran a wagon and blacksmith shop. His funeral took place Tuesday.

JOHN LEYKOM cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 26 Jan. 1889: Death Fri., after a short illness, of John Leykom, a well-known citizen of our town. He was born 17 Dec. 1809 in Germany and lived the 40 years before his death here, where he served the city for many years as cemetery attendant. His wife preceded him in death 14 years ago. He leaves 4 children of whom 3 live in Antigo and one lives locally. The burial took place Sun. at the city cemetery. ****** The funeral of the late John Leykom was held from St. James Episcopal church yesterday afternoon. Rev. Gray conducted the services which were well attended. Many floral tributes testified the appreciation of friends. Interment was at Evergreen. Manitowoc Daily Herald, January 23, 1899
