ELIZABETH LEONARD cemetery #84 Mrs. Lizzie Leonard Dies Monday Evening Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, for Mrs. Lizzie Leonard, 75, Town of Rhine, who died Monday evening at home following a lingering illness. The services will be held at 2 p.m. at St. Peter's United Church of Christ with the Rev. Vernon E. Jaberg officiating. Burial will be in the Schleswig Cemetery at Rockville. Mrs. Leonard was born August 12, 1888, in the Town of Rhine, daughter of the late George and Eva Holzmann Schmahl. She was married June 19, 1909, to Walter Leonard of the town of Rhine. The couple located on the Leonard home farm. Her husband preceded her in death in May, 1929. For the last 18 years she had made her home with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Jung, of Route 1, Elkhart Lake. She was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ, Kiel. Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Merlin Jung, of Route 1, Elkhart Lake, two sisters, Mrs. Edward Brieger, of Kiel and Mrs. Leonard L. Platz of Route 1, Elkhart Lake, and a granddaughter. Two children in infancy, a sister and a brother also preceded her in death. - November 11, 1963
FRANK LEONARD cemetery #84 Called By Death. Death claimed Frank Leonard at his home in Rockville last Saturday, after a brief illness. The deceased had suffered a stroke of apoplexy February 15th at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Louis Kattreh in Cedarburg, where he had gone with his wife for a visit. Despite the best of care and medical attention his condition became gradually worse, and he was brought to his home in Rockville three weeks ago, where he closed life's pilgrimage on April 17th. His daughter, Mrs. Kattreh of Cedarburg, took care of him until the end. Mr. Leonard was born in Niagara Falls, N. Y., August 26, 1852, and when two years old came with his parents to the town of Rhine, where he grew to manhood. In 1876 he was united in marriage there to Christine Klein and the couple later settled in Rockville, where they have since resided. Besides his wife he leaves four sons and three daughters, as follows: George of Rockville, Joseph and Edward of Milwaukee, and Harry of Cedarburg; Mrs. H. Kramer of Elkhart Lake, Mrs. W. Notbohm of Wauwatosa and Mrs. Louis Krattreh of Cedarburg; also several grandchildren; one step-brother, John, and one step-sister Francis, of Rhine. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon from the home, interment being in the Rockville cemetery. Rev. Zeh of Rhine officiated. A large number of relatives and friends from Milwaukee and other places were in attendance at the last sad rites. - April 22, 1920
GEORGE LEONARD cemetery #84 Rites Held Sunday For George Leonard Funeral services were held Sunday for George Leonard, 71, at St. Peter's Evangelical and Reformed church. The Rev. E. L. Worthman conducted the services and burial was made in the Rockville cemetery. Mr. Leonard died at Memorial hospital Thursday night. A well-known carpenter in the area, he was born December 14, 1882, the son of the late Frank and Justine Leonard and took up the carpentering trade at the age of 17. November 7, 1908, he married Ida Strade of the town of Schleswig, and the couple located in Rockville. His wife died in December of 1934. Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Arno Ruh of Kiel, Mrs. Melvin Sommers of Town Mosel, and Mrs. Victor Pech of Manitowoc; three sons, Harvey and Everett of Kiel and Roy at home; 12 grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Louis Kattreh, Town Rhine; and two brothers, Edwin and Harry of Milwaukee. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. - September, 1954 ******** George G. Leonard, 71, well known Rockville, Manitowoc County, carpenter, died Thursday night at Memorial Hospital, Sheboygan, following a short illness. He had suffered a heart attack a week ago. Funeral services wil be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the St. Peter Evangelical and Reformed Church, Kiel, the Rev. E. L. Worthman officiating, with burial in the Rockville Cemetery. He was born Dec. 14, 1882, and at 17 began to learn the carpenter trade. On Nov. 7, 1908, he married Ida Strade of the Town of Schleswig and the couple located in Rockville. She died in December of 1934. HARVEY JOSEPH LEONARD Cemetery #32 Harvey Joseph Leonard, age 90, of Kiel, died Thursday, September 14, 2000, as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in rural Fond du Lac County. Funeral Services will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, September 18, 2000, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Kiel. Rev. David Laabs will officiate with burial in the Knollwood Chapel Mausoleum, Manitowoc. He was born October 5, 1909, in Louis Corners, son of the late George Leonard and Ida Wilhelmine Pauline Strade. Harvey was a 3rd generation American of German descent, his great grandparents, George Leonard and Elisabeth Urban having immigrated to the United States as pioneers in 1852, settling in the Rhine Township of Sheboygan County. He attended the Rockville Grade School and the Kiel High School. On February 3, 1934, he married Irene Lydia Huhn at St. John & St. Peter Lutheran Church in Cleveland. The couple has resided in the Kiel area since their marriage and celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary this year. Harvey was employed by Stoelting Inc. in Kiel as a shop worker making cheese vats from 1939 to 1944, and then again from 1946 until his retirement in 1974. Harvey also farmed 60 acres on the outskirts of Kiel with his wife and family, and was well known in the community for the potatoes he grew and sold from his home for over 25 years. After retirement, he was actively engaged in his hobbies of fishing, collecting and restoring antique tractors, gasoline engines and cash registers. He was a member of the Wisconsin Steam & Antique Engine Club. Harvey was also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Kiel. He was affectionately known by his many grandchildren and great grand- children as "Papa" and will be greatly missed by his entire family. Survivors include his wife, one son, two daughters, three sisters, 11 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren; and four step great grand- children. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Everett Leonard and Roy Leonard; three grandchildren; and one great grandchild. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 4 p.m. until the time of service at 6 p.m. A Memorial has been established in his memory. IDA LEONARD cemetery #84 Wash Machine Causes Death This Monday Hair Catches in Rollers, Mrs. Geo. Leonard Found by Son Mrs. George Leonard, aged 48, of near here, met death accidentally at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at her home when her hair became caught in the electric ringer of a washing machine she was using, and caused her neck to be broken. Mrs. Leonard, who was alone at the time of the accident, was found by her six year old son Roy when he returned from the Rockville school. He ran beck to the school and told his 12 year old sister, Priscilla. Mr. Leonard who was doing carpentering in Kiel was notified and coming to his home, found the electric ringer still running. Mrs. Leonard was dead at the time her body was discovered. Manitowoc county coroner, Gerald Rau, pronounced the tragedy as accidental. Mrs. Leonard, before her marriage Miss Ida Strade, was born on a farm in Louis Corners, Jan. 1, 1886, the daughter of Mrs. August Strade and August Strade, deceased. She was married to George Leonard of Rockville November 7, 1908, the couple locating directly in Rockville where they have since resided. Survivors are her husband and six children, Harvey of Rockville, Everett of near Kiel. Mrs. Arno (Dorothy) Ruh, of near Kiel, Helen of Sheboygan, and Priscilla and Roy at home; her aged mother, Mrs. August Strade of Millhome, and two brothers, Otto of Millhome and Herman of Louis Corners. Funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon at the family residence in Rockville at 1:30 o'clock and at two o'clock with services at the St. Peter Reformed church in Kiel. The Rev. E.L. Worthman will officiate and burial will be made in the Rockville cemetery. Mrs. Leonard was a member of the Ladies' Aid Society of the St. Peter Reformed church. - 1934
JOSEPH J. LEONARD cemetery #84 Joseph J. Leonard Laid To Rest Wednesday Funeral rites for Joseph J. Leonard, 64, of Milwaukee, who passed away suddenly Saturday morning, were held on Wednesday afternoon at Kiel. He was born on Feb. 23, 1884 in the town of Rhine, the son of the late Frank and Justina Klein-Leonard. His baptism and confirmation took place at the Reformed church in Town Rhine. In his early youth he worked at Meyer Bros. store in Kiel for several years and a few years with the Horneck Bros. at Elkhart Lake. For 37 years he had lived in Milwaukee at the home of his sister, the Willard Notbohm residence at 2242 Wauwatosa ave. During that time he was employed at Schuster's and for 34 years for A. Landauer and Sons. Survivors are three brothers and a sister, namely: George and Mrs. Louis (Edna) Kattreh of Rockville, Harry and Edwin of Milwaukee. He lay in state at the Ritter Funeral home in Milwaukee Monday and then at the C. J. Meiselwitz Funeral home, where services were held on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. E. L. Worthman of the St. Peter Evangelical and Reformed church officiated at the rites. Mrs. Roland Griebenow, the pianist, accompanied the Mesdames Harry Dawurske and Athniel Raquet, as they sang "The Old Rugged Cross," "One Sweetly Solemn Thought" and "Nearer My God to Thee." Interment was made in the Rockville cemetery. Pallbearers were six nephews of the deceased: Harvey Kramer, Leslie Kattreh, Donald Leonard, Harvey, Everett and Roy Leonard. Among those attending services from away were his co-workers of Landauer and Sons, Al Herman, Emil and Henry Fink, Frank Schweda, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Horneck and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Mattes, all of Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Kramer of West Bend; Rev. and Mrs. John Siegle and son of Eyota, Minn.; a great number of relatives and friends from Sheboygan, Elkhart Lake, Rockville, Haven and surrounding communities. - March 1948
JUSTINA LEONARD cemetery #84 Mrs. Leonard, Rockville, Dies on Thursday Had Undergone Operation Successfully Two Weeks Before Almost completely recovered from and operation performed recently, Mrs. Justina Leonard of Rockville passed away unexpectedly at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Louis Kattreh, Thursday evening, the victim of a stroke of apoplexy. Her passing came as a shock to the family and to her many friends, since she had made so excellent a recovery from her operation. The deceased, nee Klein, was born September 15, 1857, in the town of Rhine, and at the time of her death had reached the age of 73 years, one month and eight days, and had always enjoyed the best of health. In November, 1875, she was united in marriage to Frank Leonard, and since about 1874 the couple resided in Rockville. Her husband preceded her in death April 12, 1920. In recent years she had been residing in her home at Rockville, in which she enjoyed all the conveniences of homes in the city. Of the eight children born to Mrs. Leonard, six survive. They are: Mrs. Henry (Mary) Kramer, Elkhart Lake; Mrs. Louis (Edna) Kattreh, Sheboygan; George of Rockville; Joseph of Wauwatosa; and Edwin and Harry of Milwaukee. One daughter, Mrs. Willard (Louise) Notbohm of Wauwatosa died June 11, 1928, and a son, Henry, died 34 years ago at the age of 10. The grandchildren number fifteen. Joseph Klein of this city is her only surviving brother, two brothers, John, who lived on the homestead farm and Henry of this city preceding her in death, and a sister, Mrs. Katie Lupfer of Sheboygan passing away eleven months ago. Funeral services were held on Monday morning of this week, from her home, with services at the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic church, the Rev. Fr. A. Roder performing the last rites. Burial was in the Rockville cemetery. She was a member of the local Alter Society. Hundreds of people came to pay their last respects at the home and to attend the last rites. KATERINA LEONARD cemetery #84 Mrs. K. Leonard Called by Death Mrs. Katherine Leonard died at her home in the Town of Rhine near here Wednesday, September 28, at 7:15 a. m. at the age of 72. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 1, at 1:30 from the home in Town Rhine and at 2:00 from the Evangelical Church in Town Rhine; Rev. Paul Thomas conducting the services. Interment will be in the Rockville cemetery. Mrs. Leonard, nee Katherine Balz, was born in Whitehaven, Pennsylvania, on March 24, 1856, and was the daughter of John and Katherine Balz. At the age of two, the family moved to Pittsburgh, where they resided for several years. At the age of eight Mrs. Leonard came to Wisconsin with her parents, and settled with them on a farm in the Town of Schleswig. On May 16, 1882, she was married to John Leonard, and the couple settled down on a farm in the Town of Rhine. Her husband preceded her in death on November 14, 1933, as did one son, Walter, who died May 15, 1929. She is survived by a son, John, at home on the family homestead, and two daughters, Mrs. Walter Bub, of the Town Rhine, and Louise, at home. There are in addition, three grandchildren and one brother, William Balz, of Garnet, to mourn her death. - 1938
WALTER F. LEONARD cemetery #84 Walter F. Leonard, a life-long resident of Town Rhine, passed away at his home there on Wednesday, May 15, after a lingering illness of several years duration. Mr. Leonard was born on his father’s farm in Town Rhine March 11, 1886 and passed his entire boyhood at that place. On June 19, 1909, he was married to Miss Lizzie Schmahl and the couple continued living in Rhine. Three chil (some missing)of which died in infancy, Besides his aged parents and his wife, the deceased is survived by one daughter, Virginia, two sisters, Mrs. Walter Bub of Rhine Center, and Miss Louisa and John at home. Funeral services were held from the home on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 and burial was in the Rockville Cemetery. The Rev. Otto Saewert had charge of the services. - May, 1929
MARY LORETTA LEONHARD cemetery #13 Mary Loretta (Lorena) Leonhard, 58, of Cleveland, died Wednesday morning at St. Nicholas Hospital, Sheboygan, where she had been a patient the past week. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Stoltenberg Funeral Chapels and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Wendel Catholic Church, Cleveland. The Rev. Thomas Peters will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Miss Leonhard was born Jan. 4, 1914, in the Town of Centerville, daughter of the late Paul and Mary Kautzer Leonhard. She made her home at Cleveland with her two brothers, Sylvester and Clarence. Survivors include her two brothers and a sister, Mrs. Edwin (Virginia) Strysick, of Sheboygan. PAUL LEONHARD cemetery #13 Paul P. Leonard (sic), 88, of Cleveland, died early today in St. Nicholas Hospital. Mr. Leonard, a retired North Western Road section worker out of Cleveland, had been hospitalized 2-1/2 weeks. A native of the Town of Centerville (Manitowoc County), he was born Nov. 17, 1877, a son of the late Joseph and Magdalene Salinsky Leonard. He married Mary Kautzer, Oct. 4, 1911. He had been employed by the North Western road until retiring in 1948. He was a member of St. Wendel’s Catholic Parish at Cleveland. Surviving are his wife; two sons, Sylvester and Clarence, both living at home; two daughters, Miss Lorena, at home, and Mrs. Edwin M. Strysick (Virginia), Sheboygan; four grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Anton Biederwolf, Sheboygan, and two brothers, Norbert, Cleveland, and August, Sheboygan. An infant daughter preceded him in death. The requiem Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday in St. Wendel’s Church, with the Rev. Jerome Watry, pastor, celebrant. Mass will follow 9 o’clock family rites at the Stoltenberg Funeral Home, Cleveland, with burial in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Wednesday. MARIA A. LEONHARDT cemetery #8 From Der Nord Westen, 19 Feb. 1903: Mrs. John Leonhardt died of old age debility Tues. last week at her son CARL's farm located near Centerville. The deceased was born 27 Aug. 1823 in Mecklenburg, married in 1857, and came to America in 1861 settling on a farm here. 4 of their sons are still living. Her funeral was held Thurs. at the Lutheran Church Cemetery north of Centerville, conducted by Rev. Sprengling.
MARY ELIZABETH LERCH cemetery #83 The Rev. George Kiefer, pastor of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Kiel, conducted a graveside service for Mary Elizabeth Lerch, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Lerch of 623 Ninth St., Kiel, at 9:30 Monday morning at the parish cemetery. The infant died at birth Saturday night at St. Nicholas Hospital. Besides the parents, survivors include two brothers and three sisters (names omitted for privacy); a maternal grandfather, Joseph Mertens of Kiel, and a paternal grandmother, Mrs. Casper Lefeber of Kiel. MRS. P. LESCH cemetery #64 From Der Nord Westen, 26 Apr. 1900: (From the correspondent in Mishicott, 24 Apr.) The wife of P. Lesch died Wed. morning after a long illness with TB and was buried Sat. afternoon in Mack's Cemetery. She was 35 and is survived by her husband.
SOPHIE LESCHIG cemetery #89A Mrs. Paul Leschig, 66, of Rt. 2, Manitowoc, Town of Two Rivers, widow of a Town of Two Rivers cheesemaker, took her own life at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Walter Wigen, on Rt. 2, Manitowoc, late Wednesday. She had been in failing health for several months. Funeral services tentatively have been set for Saturday with burial in Pioneers' Rest Cemetery, Two Rivers. Mrs. Leschig, nee Sophie Grone, was born Sept. 12, 1893, in Wunstorf, Germany, daughter of the late Franz and Minnie Heuer Grone. She was married at Wunstorf to Paul Leschig in 1918. The family immigrated to this country in 1925, settling at Newtonburg, Manitowoc County, where her husband became a cheesemaker. In 1928 the family moved to the Town of Two Rivers. Mr. Leschig died May 4, 1958. Mrs. Leschig was a member of the Homemakers, Ladies Aid Society of Immanuel church and the Auxiliary of the Freier Saengerbund of Manitowoc. Besides the daughter she leaves two sons, Paul of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Walter of Henderson, Nev.; five sisters, Mrs. George Hatopp of Two Rivers and Mrs. Helen Knope, Mrs. Louise Huhne, Mrs. Frieda Siedle and Mrs. Augusta Bantleman of Germany; two brothers, Franz and William of Germany, and eight grandchildren. JOSEPH LESCHKE cemetery #60 Joseph Leschke, 88, of Rt. 1, Newton, died Wednesday afternoon at Park Lawn Nursing Home, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Christianson Funeral Home, St. Nazianz and at 10 a.m. at St. Isidore Catholic Church, Osman. The Rev. Francis Rose will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Leschke was born Mar. 13, 1885, in the Town of Newton, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Leschke. He married Lillian Ninning Nov. 25, 1913, at St. Wendell. They farmed in the Town of Newton. Mr. Leschke was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Isidore Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife, two sons, two daughters, a brother, Peter, of Manitowoc; two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Haase of Manitowoc and Mrs. Julie Erickson of Chicago; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. OLIVE B. LESMONDE cemetery #44 Mrs. Olive LesMonde, 92, formerly of 1416 Marshall St., Manitowoc, died Friday at Park Lawn Home, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Pfeffer Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. John Hephner will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mrs. LesMonde, nee Olive Trask, was born Nov. 17, 1880, at Fond du Lac, daughter of the late Isaac and Susan Ellen Morrill Trask. She attended St. Monica's School, now Grafton Hall at Fond du Lac. She was married to Desire LesMonde in 1902 at Fond du Lac. The couple resided in Green Bay for 17 years before coming to Manitowoc. Her husband preceded her in death Jan. 5, 1928. Mrs. LesMonde was a 50 year member of the Royal Neighbors. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) ARMIDAS LESPERANCE cemetery #89D Armidis A. Lesperance, 83, of 2215-11th St., Two Rivers, retired Hamilton Mfg. Co. employe, died Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Memorial Home, Two Rivers. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Deja & Martin Funeral Chapels and at 10 a.m. at St. Mark Catholic Church, Two Rivers, the Rev. Michael Koch officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Two Rivers. Mr. Lesperance was born Aug. 17, 1889, at Coleman, son of the late Eugene and Justine LaPean Lesperance. As a young man he moved to Niagara, Wis., where he married Julia Rasette, who died in 1936. He married Anna Durand who preceded him in death at Two Rivers in 1961. Besides his present wife, the former Lucina Croisettier Poissons, he leaves a son, John, of Sheboygan; a stepson, Jerome Poissons, of Sheboygan; a daughter, Mrs. Everet Larson, of Sheboygan; five stepdaughters, Mrs. Eugene Panzer, of Sheboygan, Mrs. Jerome Kotchi, of Two Rivers, Mrs. Roy Falk, of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Al Reindl, of Mishicot and Mrs. Dale McPherson, of San Antonio, Texas; three sisters, Mrs. Eva Kenville, Mrs. Joseph Lesperance and Mrs. Albert Chiha, of Two Rivers; 40 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. LEO LESPERANCE cemetery #89D Leo (Tapo) Lesperance, 68, of 1400-19th St., Two Rivers, a retired Paragon Electric Co. Inc., employe, died Monday at home. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mark Catholic Church, Two Rivers, the Rev. Michael Koch officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Two Rivers. Mr. Lesperance was born Dec. 25, 1903, at Coleman, son of the late Wilfred and Denise Morrow Lesperance. When he was 10 the family brought him to Two Rivers from Niagara, Wis. He retired three years ago from the Paragon firm after 20 years of employment. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Denise LaFond, Mrs. Rita Vanee and Mrs. Paul Larson, of Two Rivers. Three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. Koszarek will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mr. Lesperance was born Dec. 25, 1899, at Coleman, Wis., son of the late John and Emily Pieche Lesperance. He married Martha Rysticken Nov. 11, 1924, at Manitowoc. He had been employed for 40 years by the Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry retiring as a foreman in 1965. Mr. Lettenberger underwent three operations several weeks ago and was apparently recovering. He contracted pneumonia, however, which caused his death. Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock from the St. Gregory's Catholic church, St. Nazianz. Burial will be made in the adjoining cemetery. Born at St. Nazianz Mr. Lettenberger was born at St. Nazianz August 30, 1859. He was married June 24, 1884 to Ida Weinkoetz. For about two years after his marriage Mr. Lettenberger was employed as a blacksmith. Then he operated a tavern for 16 years and finally moved to a small farm outside the village limits. For the past 20 years he has been field boss for the St. Nazianz Pea Canning company. He served for a time as treasurer of the town of Eaton. He was a member of the Holy Name society of the St. Gregory's church. The society will attend the services in a body Tuesday and will meet at the home this evening at 8 o'clock to say the rosary. (Libba) Lettenberger, 78, 520 Fremont Street, Kiel, died Thursday evening at Calumet Memorial Hospital in Chilton, where he had been a patient for three weeks. Mr. Lettenberger was born August 29, 1905, in Valders, son of John and Hermina Weinkoetz Lettenberg. He attended school in Kiel. Mr. Lettenberger and the former Alvira Klauck were married July 6, 1929, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Kiel. The couple lived in Kiel, where for 35 years Mr. Lettenberger was chief of the City of Kiel Fire Department. He retired in 1970. He was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Kiel, its Holy Name Society, and the Catholic Order of Foresters. Surviving are his wife; four sons; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grand- children. A funeral Mass was held Monday at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Kiel. The Reverend John De Groot, pastor of Chilton Catholic Interparish, celebrated the Mass. JOHN LETTENBERGER cemetery #43 Former Kiel Resident Passes Away Feb. 1 John Lettenberger, father of Herman Lettenberger of this city, was called to rest last Wednesday night following a brief illness at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Edward Auermiller at Manitowoc, where he had been residing. The deceased was born in St. Nazianz in 1869, the son of Adolph and Elizabeth Sprang-Lettenberger. In 1893 he was married to Miss Hermina Weinkoetz who preceded him in death in 1936. For several years they conducted a hotel in the building which now houses the Co-op Food store, Hayner Barber shop and Denny's tavern. They also operated a hotel in Valders before going to Manitowoc where they managed the Glenn Inn for a number of years. Following that he was employed by the Aluminum Goods Mfg. Co. in that city. Survivors are his daughter, Mrs. Auermiller; four sons, Alphonse, Herbert and Norbert, all of Manitowoc, and Herman of this city; a brother, Dr. Joseph Lettenberger of Milwaukee; 14 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at the Sacred Heart Catholic church, with the Rev. L. M. Schorn officiating. Burial took place in the Calvary cemetery.

Mrs. Lettenberger was a charter member of St. Andrew Catholic Church and the St. Therese Society of the church. ALVINA LEUBNER cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 15 Jan. 1891: Death on Sun. morning, after a long and terrible illness, of Mrs. Alvine Leubner, a long time resident of our city. She was born 27 July 1820 in Chemnitz, married Mr. Ernst Leubner in her 30th year and came with him and her eldest son to America in her 50th year. They settled here in Manitowoc where Mr. Leubner established a drugstore. In 1874 she suffered the loss of her son Otto who was studying the druggist business in his father’s store. Also in 1881 she lost her only daughter, just to have her husband follow soon after. She was ill several weeks preceding her death. Her funeral took place on Tues. in the city cemetery. Of her two surviving sons, the eldest, Paul, lives in Minneapolis and the other, Alfred, is in business here.

Leubner, of this city, died at the residence of his father-in-law, Hon. Chas. Esslinger, on Monday, the 16th of February last, of Consumption, at the age of 27 years, 10 months and 6 days. The deceased was a native of Saxony came to this city with his parents some twenty three years ago, since which time he has resided here constantly. He leaves a lovingly devoted wife, who was married to him less than a year; his aged parent, to whom he was a faithful son and his two brothers and a sister who all loved him for his goodness and constant devotion to their mutual contentment and interest, besides a host of friends, to whom he has endeared himself by his gentleness and reliability. The funeral will take place this (Friday) afternoon at 2 o'clock.

Mr. Levenhagen was sitting in his armchair Mon. noon conversing with his wife and sank dead in the middle of a sentence. Mr. Levenhagen was born in Mecklenburg in 1821 and came to Manitowoc in 1855 where he has lived ever since. He formerly operated a fishery here but gave it up as old age approached. He was born 21 Sept. 1824 in Varchentin, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, and married in Dec. 1846. In 1853 he came with his wife and 2 sons to America, first settling in Trenton, N.J., then 3 yrs. in Canada, coming to Mishicott in 1856 where he lived 3 yrs., then moving to Kewaunee. In former years he worked as a miller, but since 1876 has been in the saloon business. He is survived by his wife, 7 sons, 3 daughters, 35 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. His funeral took place last Sun. afternoon in the local cemetery attended by a large crowd. Fritz Levenhagen of Wausau, and Mrs. Mathilde Olfs (nee Levenhagen) of Medford, stayed here a few days after attending their father’s funeral.

MINNIE LEVERENZ cemetery #80 Mrs. Wilhelmina Leverenz, a former resident of this village, passed away at the St. Nicholas hospital, Sheboygan, Tuesday afternoon at six o’clock, while visiting her grandson, Clifford Weber who is a patient there. She had been with the patient but a few minutes when she complained of feeling uneasy about the chest and fainted away in a chair. She was placed in bed in an adjoining room where she died two hours later. Death was due to heart failure. Mrs. Leverenz was born February 9, 1840. In Germany and came to this country in 1860, settling on a farm in New Holstein. After having made her home there for thirty-five years, she moved to the village where she lived until three years ago when her husband died. Since that time she had resided at Sheboygan. On Feb. 2, 1861, she was united in marriage to Joachim Leverenz at Fond du Lac. The remains were brought to this village Thursday morning and placed in the German Methodist cemetery at Meggers. She was a faithful church member and even after moving to New Holstein she in company with her husband drove out to Meggers to attend church. Survivors are four sons, H. F. Leverenz, Sheboygan, Charles and George, New Holstein, and William of Waldo, and three daughters, Mrs. Gustave Weber, Mrs. J. Reichardt, New Holstein, and Miss Lizzie at home. The deceased was born Sophie Kansier on 23 Feb. 1825 in Siekow, Mecklenburg-Schwerin and married Carl Leverenz 25 Mar. 1843. The couple came to America in 1851 and traveled to Milwaukee via Canada, stayed there about 6 weeks and then came to Manitowoc where they have lived ever since. Here they overcame all the difficulties and troubles of the pioneer life and enjoyed the highest admiration of their fellow citizens. In March last year the couple celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary. The inroads of age increased over the last year until she closed her tired eyes in death last Sat. Her husband, who celebrated his 81st birthday on 01 May, has suffered a terrible blow in the loss of his life partner. NIC. LEY cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 02 Apr. 1896: On Mon. morning some children at play near the docks of the 8th St. bridge, saw a cord hanging from a nail into the water. The curious boys started to pull on the cord, and much to their horror, found a man’s hand and then the body of a man at the end of it. Obviously the police were called immediately and the body taken to land. It was determined to be the body Nicolaus Ley, an old and well-known resident of our city. The coroner’s inquiry was conducted with a verdict of suicide. What prompted him to take his own life is unknown. What is known is that about 4 weeks ago he had traveled to Chicago to undergo an operation that may have led ultimately to his decision. He went to Chicago again last week and returned here on Tues. about 10 a.m. That is the last time he was seen. Nicolaus Ley was born 25 Nov. 1831 in Bez. Trier, Prussia. He lived over 40 yrs. in our city where he ran a wagon and blacksmith shop. His funeral took place Tuesday.
