Trier-Ehrang, 4 April 75 Mr. Thomas Koch 1315 E. Holmes St. Janesville, Wis. 53545 Dear Mr. Koch! Thank you very much for your correspondence of 3 March. I had been traveling for two weeks and found your letter when I returned yesterday. I shall answer it immediately. In my book "The America-Emigration From The Saarburg District" I have found recorded the emigrant Peter Koch, his wife Maria Staudt and the children with their birthdates. The family at that time was living in Wehr, and this place belongs to the parish of Palzem (not Peilzen). In my book it states: Continuing Number 778 The day-laborer Peter Koch, 47 years old, with his wife Maria Staudt, 40 years old, and the children Peter, born 29 Nov. 1841 Anna, born 5 May 1854 Johann, born 14 May 1844 Elisabeth, born 18 March 1856 Michael, born 20 Dec. 1848 Wilhelm, born 12 March 1858 Mathias, born 5 Oct. 1851 Johann, born 28 Sept. 1859 Heinrich, born 4 Sept. 1861 by way of (Le) Havre to North America. "so that he might secure his future through earnings from a farm". 2 October 1862 3000 Talers That's as far as the section from my book goes. Peter Koch had at his disposal over 3,000 Talers available cash, that is 9,000 Marks and that was for that time a small fortune. The high amount of available cash proves the Peter Koch had auctioned off all his property before his departure. The date 2 October 1862 is the date of the release document, preserved in the state archives in Koblenz. Koch also probably emigrated to the U.S.A. a short time later, but surely still in October. You now have the exact birthdates of the children of the Koch-Staudt marriage, and you also know the exact city of residence of the emigrant, namely Palzem. It would make me very happy, if, on a trip to Germany, you would visit us here. I have already welcomed many Americans in my home. Unfortunately I do not speak your language, and that is a disadvantage. But right across from me lives a woman who understands English, so an understanding will be possible. With the best greetings from the old homeland Mergen In the office of the Register of Deeds, Manitowoc County, WI, a warranty deed was registered on May 26, 1875, indicating the purchase of the Koch farm from Franz Stadler and his wife Dorothea for the value of $1200. Volume 15 Page 5 "The following described real estate situated in the County of Manitowoc and State of Wisconsin to wit: All that certain tract of land of the West half of the North East quarter and the South East quarter of the North East quarter of Section No. Nineteen (19) Township No. Twenty (20) North of Range No. Twenty-four (24) East which lies west of the so called Neshota River being Eighty acres of land or about, be the same more or less"

Koeck, prominent for years in business and public life of St. Nazianz and Manitowoc county, was instantly killed Saturday at Arlington, Columbia county while driving his car back to Cresco, Iowa, after a visit at the home of his son Albert in Manitowoc. He was 76 years old. Mr. Koeck’s car collided with one driven by Mrs. Raymond Unke, Portage. The fenders of the two machines locked. The Koeck car turned over on its top. When rescuers reached Mr. Koeck he was dead. He sustained a fractured skull. The deceased, who was one of the first motorists in the county, was making his 104th trip between Manitowoc and points in Iowa and Minnesota when he was killed. He left the home of his son at Manitowoc on Saturday morning to return to Cresco, Iowa, where he was head of the Royal Puritan Farms. Despite his advanced age Mr. Koeck thought nothing of the long trip to Iowa. He drove automobiles ever since they came in to general use at the turn of the century. Mr. Koeck was the owner of the first automobile in the county outside this city. Born In Illinois The body of Mr. Koeck was taken to Portage and, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Schneider, son-in-law and daughter, reached St. Nazianz Sunday night. Word from Portage, was that Mrs. Unke, driver of the car that collided with the Koeck machine, sustained body bruises and was not seriously hurt. Mr. Koeck, was born at Decatur, Illinois, in 1859, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Koeck. He was only two years of age when his father died. The family moved to St. Nazianz and Mr. Koeck was reared there. He later attended the school at St. Lawrence College at Mt. Calvary. He took up teaching, and for five years was in charge of a school at Francis Creek. The deceased returned to St. Nazianz, took up the carpenter’s trade and later opened a book and confectionery store in the village. He engaged in the undertaking business which he continued un (apparently cut off here) Runs Canning Company It was in 1901 that Mr. Koeck joined with others in St. Nazianz in organizing the Pioneer Canning and Pickling Company. He served several years as manager and secretary of the company, which was later taken over by the Valders Company. In public life Mr. Koeck always took a keen interest in the affairs of not only St. Nazianz, but of the town of Eaton, and the county at large. In 1886 he was elected town clerk and held that position for 13 years. He also served for three years as Eaton town chairman and represented the town on the county board. Mr. Koeck was a justice of the peace in the village; a charter member of the Catholic Knights terms served as secretary of the state organization. He was also a member of the Catholic congregation at St. Nazianz. KAROLINE KOEHRING cemetery #82 (no newspaper name) 1925 Mrs. Karoline Koehring, 75, one of Kiel's former old-time and well-known residents, passed away at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Hollensteiner, at Milwaukee on Monday. Karoline Koehring, nee Miller, was born December 21, 1849, in Gross-Abersdorf, a. d. Rhine, Saxony, Germany. Here, in the native village she received a sound elementary secular education, and also a thorough religious training. At the age of 18 years she came to America, where she found a home with a brother near Oconomowoc, Wis. Two years later she was united in marriage with William Koehring. They settled at Kiel, where they spent practically all of their active life. Here they reared their family of six children. Here also they united with and continued their membership in the Reformed church. On October 27, 1903, Mrs. Kroehling lost her husband through death. In 1915 she moved to Milwaukee, where several of her children had established themselves. After the marriage of her youngest daughter, she made her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. E. Hollensteiner, where she remained for 8 years, until her death last Monday morning, and where she found every comfort and care, which tender filial affection could provide. About two years ago her eyesight began to fail her. This was to her a serious affliction, and a test of her faith. Yet as time went on she was able by the grace of God to take up the cross and to adjust herself to it and to fix her mind more and more on the objects of faith, the things not seen by human eyes. Trusting in her Savior, she has gone on to the clear vision of the better life. She leaves her six children: Wm. J. Koehring, Mrs. E. Hollensteiner, Philip A. Koehring, Mrs. Geo. Miller and Mrs. G.A. Thompson, all of Milwaukee, and Mrs. Hugo Duecker of Algoma. Also 13 grandchildren and one great-grand-daughter, besides many other relatives and a host of friends.
