ALBERT KAHRS Cemetery 89A Death record, v. 33, #130 Albert Kahrs of 1706-18th St., T.R., Mant. Cty., Wis. Died Dec. 30, 1939, Two Rivers, Mant. Cty. Married: Wife: Hattie Born May 28, 1879 Age 60 years, 7 mo. 2 days Buffer, Aluminum Goods Mfg. Co. Father: Henry Kahrs born in Germany Mother: Christina Hempke born in Two Rivers Cause: Coronary Sclerosis due to coronary occlusion. Dec. 30, 1939 Albert Kahrs Dies After Long Illness FUNERAL WILL BE HELD HERE ON WEDNESDAY Son of First White Child Born Here Was 60; Had Heart Ailment Albert B. Kahrs, 60, a son of the first white child born in Two Rivers, and one of the city's most widely known residents, died at his home at 1706 18th street at six o'clock Saturday night from heart disease. Known as one of the city's kindliest persons, and an enthusiast in all types of sports, particularly baseball, since youth, Mr. Kahrs had been in ill health since he suffered a heart attack four years ago. Funeral Wednesday He took seriously ill again nine weeks ago, but on Christmas, surrounded by his children and grandchildren, he took a turn toward the better. However, Thursday morning his illness again became critical and he failed rapidly. Funeral services for Mr. Kahrs will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 from the home and at 2 o'clock in St. John's Lutheran church, the Rev. W.G. Haase officiating. Interment will be in the family plot in Pioneers' Rest cemetery. The remains were taken to the residence this afternoon from the Beduhn funeral home and can be viewed until the hour of services. On Trustees Board For the past 22 years Mr. Kahrs was a die-setter at Plant 1 of the Aluminum Goods Manufacturing company. Previous to his last place of employment he worked for many years with his lat father- in-law, Charles Griep, at the old Mueller Bros. brewery, now the Two Rivers Beverage company. Mr. Kahrs served for a period of 12 years on the board of trustees of St. John's church, leaving the board when he was stricken with illness in 1935. A member of the Two Rivers Old Settlers' club and of the Lutheran Men's club, he also belonged to the Two Rivers volunteer fire department from 1900 to the time it was reorganized into a paid department in 1919. He had been on the Dexter hook and ladder unit of the department. Ardent Baseball Fan A great enthusiast of all sports activities, baseball was his chief hobby. A pitcher for amateur teams in his youth, he never lost interest in the game. Seldom he missed a game in which the city team played, and he frequently attended major league contests in Chicago and watched the Brewers play in Milwaukee. He followed the fortunes of the Milwaukee club with interest from the days when Ty Lober, now a Two Rivers resident was the club's leadoff man. --------------- ALBERT KAHRS The death on Saturday of Albert Kahrs, son of the first white woman born in Two Rivers, removes from the community a splendid citizen. For many weeks most of Two Rivers had known that Albert Kahrs had been approaching the end of the road, and his brave but hopeless fight against a fatal illness has been watched with sorrow for its inevitable end. Albert Kahrs was a friendly gentleman, and extremely popular with all who knew him. And these numbered in the hundreds in a city where he resided his entire life. In spite of his ailing condition in the past four years he always greeted his friends with a smile. That quality never left Albert Kahrs. Those identified with sports activities in Two Rivers probably will miss Albert most. The sports page was always "page 1" to Albert. There, perhaps, wasn't a single participant in the upper brackets of organized and independent baseball whom he couldn't recall for some deed during his career. Keeping records of the achievements in competitive sports was his chief hobby. And as a supporter of the representative city baseball team he ranked among the most ardent. He rarely missed a game here. Yes, Albert Kahrs, a fine citizen, and loving father, will be missed and our sympathy goes to the bereaved family, which is now sustaining its greatest loss.

ANNA (STAHL) KALTENBRUN Cemetery #21 (sent in by researcher-see contributors page) From the Manitowoc Herald Times, Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Saturday, January 16, 1960 - Page 7, Column 2. Mrs. Anna Kaltenbrun, 78, of St. Nazianz, died Friday evening at her home following a lingering illness. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Kaltenbrun residence and at 10 a.m. at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz, with the Rev. Dennis Cooney officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Kaltenbrun was born July 26, 1881, at Baden, Germany, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gregory Stahl. She came to the United States with her family in 1890. She was married to Anton Kaltenbrun May 19, 1908 at St. Nazianz. Her husband preceded her in death in 1920 at which time Mrs. Kaltenbrun assumed managership of the Kaltenbrun Mfg. Co. which she managed until the time of her death. She was a member of St. Gregory Church and the church Christian Mothers Altar Society. Survivors include a son, at home; two daughters, three sisters, Mrs. Mary Geigel, Mrs. Frank Schwab, and Mrs. Sylvia Mertens; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A daughter, Mrs. Francis Schnell, preceded her in death in 1941. ANTON KALTENBRUN/KALTENBRUNN Cemetery #21 (sent in by researcher-see contributors page) This obituary can be found in the Tri-County Record, Kiel, Wisconsin. Issue - Thursday, April 29, 1920 - Page 4, Column 1. On Saturday death entered the Kaltenbrunn home and took from them their beloved husband and father, Anton Kaltenbrunn, better known as "Foundry Tony." The deceased was born here Feb. 24, 1872, and reached an age of 48 years and two months. He was married 12 years ago to Anna Schweitzer, who with four children survive him. They are: Adelinda, 11, Rosalia, 8, Monica, 4, and Ambros, 1 year old. Besides he leaves his 84 year old mother, two brothers and two sisters, viz: Ambrose, Ludwig and Mrs. Anton Schwoerer here, and Mrs. Mutzbauer of Milwaukee. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Gregory's church. Postnote: The obituary lists his wife's maiden name as Schweitzer however my research of vital records indicate her maiden name was Stahl. I believe this to be a misprint.

EVA (GEIGEL) KALTENBRUN cemetery #21 (sent in by researcher-see contributors page) This obituary can be found in the Tri-County Record, Kiel, Wisconsin. Issue - Thursday, July 28, 1927 - Page 4, Column 1. Mrs. Eva Kaltenbrunn, nee Geigel, widow of the late Victor Kaltenbrunn, died Thursday noon at the age of 89 years, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. Schwoerer. She was born in Baden, Germany, and at the age of 21 years, came with her sister to America. In 1870 she was united in marriage to Mr. Kaltenbrunn, a widower with five children. They resided on a farm one mile north of St. Nazianz, where the deceased lived with her son, Ambrose, until about three weeks ago, when she became ill. Her daughter, Mrs. Anton Schwoerer then took her to her home, where she died peacefully. Her death was rather sudden, as when the daughter brought the tray with her noon day meal to her, she found her mother dead. The survivors are the son, Ambrose, two daughters, Mrs. A. Schwoerer and Mrs. Mutzbauer of Milwaukee, and the wife and children of her late son, Anton Kaltenbrunn. Funeral services were held on Monday at 9:30 a.m. in St. Gregory's church, officiated by Rev. F. Holzknecht. Burial will be in the adjacent cemetery. Correction Postnote: My research of the church and civil records indicate that they were married in 1869, not 1870 as mentioned in this obituary. Mrs. Mutzbauer was Eva's step-daughter. A step-son, Ludwig Kaltenbrunn preceded her in death in 1924.

KATHERINE KALTENBRUN cemetery #21 (sent in by researcher-see contributors page) This obituary can be found in the Tri-County Record, Kiel, Wisconsin. Issue Thursday, December 24, 1942 - Page 1, Column 4 Mrs. Katherine Kaltenbrunn, aged 90, oldest member of the St. Gregory parish of St. Nazianz, passed away at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Christel, a mile east of St. Nazianz on Sunday morning at 2 o'clock. She had been ill for some time. Mrs. Kaltenbrunn, nee Katherine Riesterer, was born April 18, 1852, in Baden, Germany, and in 1871 came to America, direct to St. Nazianz. In September, 1874, she was married to Louis Kaltenbrunn at St. Nazianz, by the late Rev. P.A. Mutz. After their marriage they bought the farm now occupied by Louis Adelman, where they lived until 1912 when they retired, making their home in the village of St. Nazianz. Fourteen children were born to the couple, four of whom died in infancy, and a daughter, Mrs. Anton Schleh died May 31, 1925. Her husband also preceded her in death in January, 1924. Survivors are five daughters, Mrs. Albert Christel of Valders R.1, Mrs. John Michels and Mrs. Joseph Gaerthoeffner of Sheboygan, Mrs. William Wollersheim of Kiel R. 2, and Mrs. Anton Eberle of Valders R. 1; four sons, Anton of Random Lake, Joseph and Louis of West Allis and Peter of Oakwood; 50 grandchildren, 70 great-grandchildren, and one great, great-grandchild. Funeral services were held this Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Gregory's church and burial was made in the adjoining church cemetery. The Rev. Fintan Holzknecht officiated. Postnote: This is the obituary of my great-grandmother. I have researched the church records and she was married to her husband in August of 1875, not September of 1874 as the obituary states. Her husband was also known as Ludwig.

LUDWIG KALTENBRUN cemetery #21 (sent in by researcher-see contributors page) This obituary can be found in the Tri-County Record, Kiel, Wisconsin Vol. 31, No. 48. Issue - Thursday, January 31, 1924 - Page 4, Column 1 Ludwig Kaltenbrunn died at his home here on Friday night after an illness of four days with pneumonia. Deceased was born in Germany in 1851 and came to this country at the age of four years. In 1862 he came to St. Nazianz, settling on a farm four miles west of the village. He was married to Catherine Hausherr in 1875. Ten years ago the couple moved to this village where they have since resided. Mr. Kaltenbrunn's death was a shock and is a loss to the community, as he was a man of good character and was liked by all who knew him. He is also a great loss to the congregation as he was the president of the St. Nazianz Branch 109 of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin and was secretary of St. Gregory's congregation. It was only last week when he closed the books for 1923 and had everything in order. On last Tuesday he took sick with pneumonia. The end came unexpectedly on Friday evening. For many years he was janitor of the church. The funeral was held on Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. Deibele officiating. Burial was made in St. Gregory's cemetery. Besides his wife the following survive him: daughters, Mrs. Anton Schleh, Mrs. Albert Christel, Mrs. Jos. Gaerthoefner and Mrs. Anton Eberle of St. Nazianz; sons, Anton of Liberty, Joseph and Louis of West Allis and Peter of Racine; brother, Ambrose; and sisters Mrs. Helen Mutzbauer of Milwaukee and Mrs. Anton Schwoerer. All the children were here for the last sad rites. The out-of-town people not including the children who attended the funeral were: Misses Hattie and Louise Mutzbauer, and Joseph Mutzbauer of Milwaukee, Mr. and Mrs. J. Geigel, Reedsville; Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Schleh, Mr. and Mrs. John Schleh, J. Lutz and the Misses Catherine, Marie and Adeline Lutz of Sheboygan, and A. Connell of Chilton. The funeral was one of the largest held here for some time. Fourteen School Hill Catholic Knights and about 75 of the St. Nazianz branch and 20 members of the Holy Name society attended in a body. Also the Christian Mothers, besides other friends. The six sons of John Riesterer were pallbearers, being relatives of the deceased. Correction Postnote: This is the obituary of my great-grandfather. Ludwig's wife, Catherine is listed with a maiden name of Hausherr in this article. All research on vital records I have conducted to date list her maiden name as Riesterer - I believe this to be a misprint in the obituary. Also, his date of arrival in St. Nazianz is listed as 1862. My research shows that they arrived in America in July 1855 and I have a copy of Ludwig's sister Helen's birth in St. Nazianz in August of 1855. One daughter, Helen Mahnke (later Helen Michels) is omitted from the list of daughters surviving him.

He went to work as usual Tues. but felt ill on Wed. with what goes by the title Gesichts-rose (facial erysipelas) which is unpleasant but not considered to be dangerous. The patient remained in his room but was not bedridden, so most of his many friends had no idea that he was even ill. He first settled in Cleveland, Ohio, but shortly afterward continued on to Manitowoc where he remained. For a long while he worked in the local shipyard until he opened a store 27 yrs. ago handling pictures, books, etc., and at the same time started a funeral home, both of which he operated up until his death. As an accomplished singer he joined several local singing groups and was also a member of various Catholic clubs. In 1864 he married Miss Marie Cichy with whom he shared a happy life. In addition to his widow he is survived by 4 children: Mrs. Conrad Werra, Mrs. Alex Pankratz, Rosa and Wilhelm Kappes. The funeral was held Tues. morning from St. Boniface Church.
