JOHN HERIAN cemetery #89A From Der Nord Westen, 26 Mar. 1908: (From the correspondent in Two Rivers, 23 Mar.) Also, John Herrian was buried Saturday afternoon. He died in the mental facility in Manitowoc where he had been a patient for many years. Herrian, who came here from Mishicott, operated a harness shop and enjoyed a fine reputation. He sold the business and retired and a few years later was declared to be mentally ill and sent to the state mental facility in Oshkosh, later being transferred to the Manitowoc facility as incapable of being healed. His family, consisting of his widow and several grown children, still live here. ************* From Der Nord Westen, 26 Mar. 1908: John Harrian of Two Rivers, who has been a patient in the local mental facility since 19 July 1900, took his own life Thursday morning last week. He had often threatened suicide and was kept under close watch, but with the mentally disturbed it is often impossible and despite all surveillance, exceptions occur. By profession he was a harness maker and had lived in Two Rivers for a long time. When he became obsessed with making a perpetual machine producing electricity, his mind snapped and he was sent to the state mental facility in Oshkosh and then later transferred to the local mental facility here and placed under a suicide watch. In some way he found out that the facility's mechanic kept a shotgun in his bedroom. On Thursday morning he noticed that the mechanic had failed to lock his door. He went in, took the weapon, cocked it, tied a string from his apron to the trigger and the other end to his foot, put the muzzle in his mouth and fired it with his foot. (Article goes into specific detail of the aftermath.) Harrian was 51 years old and leaves a widow and 7 children in Two Rivers. A coroner's inquest was held. ************** From Der Nord Westen, 30 Apr. 1908: (From the correspondent in Two Rivers, 27 Apr.) Last week Mrs. John Herrian received a check of $2,000 from the "Modern Woodman" Order as payment of her husband's life insurance. It is said that Herrian is the first member of that order to have died.
MARIA HERLIK cemetery #26 Friday, June 24, 1910 Mrs. Mary Herlik. Last Sunday afternoon Mrs. Mary Herlik died at the home of her son John in this city, from infirmities of old age. She was born in Bohemia in 1823 and when still in her teens was married to George Herlik. They moved to this country in 1863 and settled in Manitowoc County on a forty acre farm where they resided up to four years ago when Mr. Herlik died and the children took hold of the work for the mother. Mrs. Herlik, since the death of her husband, has resided with her daughter, Mrs. Mary Skarwan of Kossuth up to about a month ago, when her son begged his sister to leave her to his care where she could live in quiet and also to try and do the duty of every child to his aged parents-to care for her in her waning years. Eighty-seven years told little on the mind of Mrs. Herlik, and when drawn into a conversation, she displayed a brilliant intelligence and was a good entertainer. She is survived by two daughters and one son: Mrs. Anna Radey and Mrs. Mary Skarwan of Manitowoc County, and John Herlik of this city. At eight o'clock Tuesday morning, the funeral procession left here and grew longer continually. When Gibson was reached, there were over thirty-five teams following the hearse, and as this was in the vicinity of where she spent nearly all her days in this country, the congregation of friends kept growing larger and larger so that the multitude numbered into hundreds before the destination was reached. Late in the day, the procession reached Kellnersville, where her body was laid to rest in the Catholic Cemetery. from the Kewaunee enterprise newspaper

ANNA HEWITT cemetery #16 From Der Nord Westen, 01 May 1902: Death in Cooperstown of 20-yr. old Miss Anna Hewitt of consumption. (Note: The newspaper is off on her age, this happens frequently)
JOHN E. HEWITT Cemetery #16 (here is where the Hewitt family is buried in Cooperstown, so I put this obituary here.) From the Manitowoc Pilot, January 18, 1894: John E. Hewitt died at the home of his parents in Cooperstown on Sunday January 14. He was born in Cooperstown and was 30 years old at the time of his death. He received a good common school education, but was seized with the ambition which has spurred so many young men in this county to action, to improve his education beyond what local facilities could offer. He became a teacher in the public schools and as each year increased his fund of knowledge and his efficiency as a teacher he secured a better school until he secured the principalship of the New Holstein public schools. He then quit teaching and became manager of the Williams' House of this city. He quit this position and went to Chicago but he had contracted a cold which settled on his lungs and he died of consumption after an exhibition of vitality which surprised everyone. He was a young man of most generous impulses, one on whom his friends could always count for any service which unselfish friendship might prompt. His taste for reading had the bent from which culture comes and he was a subscriber to the best magazines. Gifted with a degree of physical strength unusual in a man of average weight, he fought off impending death for a long time and never lost his interest in public matters. There is not a person who knew him whose friendship and confidence he did not enjoy. He was just to every one ernest in everything he did and though he died young he did sufficient during his lifetime to endear him to many who will learn with regret of his death.
