JOHN HERIAN cemetery #89A From Der Nord Westen, 26 Mar. 1908: (From the correspondent in Two Rivers, 23 Mar.) Also, John Herrian was buried Saturday afternoon. He died in the mental facility in Manitowoc where he had been a patient for many years. Herrian, who came here from Mishicott, operated a harness shop and enjoyed a fine reputation. He sold the business and retired and a few years later was declared to be mentally ill and sent to the state mental facility in Oshkosh, later being transferred to the Manitowoc facility as incapable of being healed. His family, consisting of his widow and several grown children, still live here. ************* From Der Nord Westen, 26 Mar. 1908: John Harrian of Two Rivers, who has been a patient in the local mental facility since 19 July 1900, took his own life Thursday morning last week. He had often threatened suicide and was kept under close watch, but with the mentally disturbed it is often impossible and despite all surveillance, exceptions occur. By profession he was a harness maker and had lived in Two Rivers for a long time. When he became obsessed with making a perpetual machine producing electricity, his mind snapped and he was sent to the state mental facility in Oshkosh and then later transferred to the local mental facility here and placed under a suicide watch. In some way he found out that the facility's mechanic kept a shotgun in his bedroom. On Thursday morning he noticed that the mechanic had failed to lock his door. He went in, took the weapon, cocked it, tied a string from his apron to the trigger and the other end to his foot, put the muzzle in his mouth and fired it with his foot. (Article goes into specific detail of the aftermath.) Harrian was 51 years old and leaves a widow and 7 children in Two Rivers. A coroner's inquest was held. ************** From Der Nord Westen, 30 Apr. 1908: (From the correspondent in Two Rivers, 27 Apr.) Last week Mrs. John Herrian received a check of $2,000 from the "Modern Woodman" Order as payment of her husband's life insurance. It is said that Herrian is the first member of that order to have died. ********* A SAD MISFORTUNE. John Herian Adjudged Insane. Is Father of Seven Children. John Herian, of Two Rivers, was adjudged insane in county court this morning. For the past four years he has shown symptoms of insanity, but the malady has never assumed a violent form. He traveled quite extensively of late and on his return from a recent trip, he acted very strangely. Friends petitioned that he be taken care of and he was brought to this city last evening and taken to Oshkosh this morning. It is supposed that constant worry over business matters was the direct cause of his misfortune. The case is sad in that he is married and is the father of seven children, the youngest being but four years of age. He was rather unwilling to enter the hospital but the physicians who conducted the examination ordered that he be taken care of. The family is in comfortable circumstances. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Manitowoc, March 4, 1899
HENRY J. HERING cemetery #89A Henry J. Hering, 75, active in the concrete business at Two Rivers for years, died Thursday at the Two Rivers municipal hospital. He had been residing with his sister, Mrs. Ernest Sonntag, of 1410 21st street, Two Rivers. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. John Lutheran church, Two Rivers. Burial will be in Pioneers Rest cemetery. Mr. Hering was born in Germany in 1873 and came to Two Rivers with his parents. In 1903 he entered into a partnership with the late Ernst Streu in the concrete business. In 1913 an accident forced Mr. Hering to retire from the firm. He was later employed by the city, first in the water department and later as a janitor. After 32 years service for the city he retired three years ago. Two sisters, Mrs. Sonntag of Two Rivers and Mrs. John Zabel of this city, survive. The body may be viewed after 7 p.m. Saturday at the Klein and Stangel Inc., funeral home, Two Rivers, and will be moved to the church at 10:30 a.m. Monday. MARIA HERLIK cemetery #26 Friday, June 24, 1910 Mrs. Mary Herlik. Last Sunday afternoon Mrs. Mary Herlik died at the home of her son John in this city, from infirmities of old age. She was born in Bohemia in 1823 and when still in her teens was married to George Herlik. They moved to this country in 1863 and settled in Manitowoc County on a forty acre farm where they resided up to four years ago when Mr. Herlik died and the children took hold of the work for the mother. Mrs. Herlik, since the death of her husband, has resided with her daughter, Mrs. Mary Skarwan of Kossuth up to about a month ago, when her son begged his sister to leave her to his care where she could live in quiet and also to try and do the duty of every child to his aged parents-to care for her in her waning years. Eighty-seven years told little on the mind of Mrs. Herlik, and when drawn into a conversation, she displayed a brilliant intelligence and was a good entertainer. She is survived by two daughters and one son: Mrs. Anna Radey and Mrs. Mary Skarwan of Manitowoc County, and John Herlik of this city. At eight o'clock Tuesday morning, the funeral procession left here and grew longer continually. When Gibson was reached, there were over thirty-five teams following the hearse, and as this was in the vicinity of where she spent nearly all her days in this country, the congregation of friends kept growing larger and larger so that the multitude numbered into hundreds before the destination was reached. Late in the day, the procession reached Kellnersville, where her body was laid to rest in the Catholic Cemetery. from the Kewaunee enterprise newspaper

FERDINAND HERMANN cemetery #43 From Der Nord Westen, 01 Sep. 1904: As he was leaving work from the factory of the American School Furniture Co. with his fellow workmen on Thurs. evening, Ferdinand Hermann suddenly fell to the ground. His comrades sprang to his help, but there was nothing they could do because a heart attack had claimed Hermann’s life. Ferdinand Hermann was born in Germany in 1833 and came to Manitowoc with his family about 38 yrs. ago, where he has lived ever since. He was known as an excellent cabinetmaker, was quite healthy despite his age, and his work was always in demand. He had been employed in the above-named factory about a year. JOHN HERRMANN (d. 1899) cemetery #44 BADE HER GOOD-BYE Then John Herrmann Left His Wife, Never to Return in Life. IN THE EMBRACE OF DEATH. He Was Returned to Her a Few Minutes Later-Had Committed Suicide in His Own Barn-Mind Was Unbalanced. John Herrman (sic), a well known contractor of the city, residing on Madison street, committed suicide by hanging at an early hour this morning. He arose as usual and after remaining about the house some time, bade his wife good bye, as was his custom, saying he would go to the barn, feed the horses and then go down town. This was the last time he was seen alive. A few minutes later he was brought to the house, cold in death. It was 6 o'clock when he left the house and at twenty minutes after 6, Chas. Zimmer, who was employed by the contracter, went to the barn to harness his team for the day's work. As he entered the building a ghastly sight met his eyes. Hanging from a beam was the body of his employer. He called for help and neighbors rushed to his assistance, the body was cut down, medical aid was summoned, but it was too late. His purpose had been accomplished and the spirit had taken its flight. The body was removed to the house and a corner's jury was summoned to meet at 10 o'clock. Friends of the dead man can assign no cause for the rash act. Early in June of last year he suffered an attack of grip and since that time his health has not been the best. He never recovered from the effects of the disease and was continually complaining of severe pains in the head. He would walk the floor for hours and frequently remarked that unless he could obtain relief soon, he must do something else. Business in his line has not been the best and he worried considerably over his inability to secure the work he desired. It is thought that his trouble unbalanced his mind and that he committed suicide while in a fit of temporary insanity. His wife is prostrated by the shock. John Herrmann was born in this city May 18, 1859 and was at the time of his death, 40 years of age. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Hermann and was one of a family of eleven children. He was married March 18, 1881, to Miss Bertha Winke, the ceremony being perfomed in this city. For a number of years he has been prominent as a contracter and road grader and his services were in demand. His family relations have been the most happy. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Herrmann, all of whom are living, the youngest being only nine months old. He was a loving father, a kind husband and a good neighbor. Honest and upright, he numbered his friends by the score and his death will bring a pang of sorrow to many a heart. The funeral will probably be held Monday afternoon at the late home. The Coroner's inquest was held at the office of Justice Falge at 10 o'clock. The jury consisted of Wm. Barkholm, Henry Schweitzer, Jr., Jos. Trestek, Ed. Hermann, Gustave Uek, Jos. Pfeffer, returned a verdict in accordance with the evidence presented, as follows: "We, the jury, summoned to act in the matter of the death of John Herrmann, find that said John Herrmann came to his death through hanging himself in his barn by a rope." Manitowoc Daily Herald, April 1, 1899 ******* The funeral services over the remains of the late John Herrmann were held from the home on Madison street yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Henry Falge conducted the services and the attendance was large. Numerous floral tributes testified the esteem of friends and the interment was at Evergereen. The pall bearers were: J. Trestek, C. Freidl, C. Heingarten, W. Menge, G. Streich and P. Riderera. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Manitowoc, Wis. Tuesday, April 4, 1899 P.1 ****** [bur. 04-01-1899/cause: suicide]
