KARL R. GUEHLSTORF cemetery #43 Mr. Karl R. Guehlstorf, 83, of Manitowoc died Monday morning, January 15, 1990, at the home of his son in South Milwaukee Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Pfeffer Funeral Home and 11 a.m. at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Presiding at the Mass of Christian Burial will be Rev. Jeff Vanden Heuvel and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mr. Guehlstorf was born May 1, 1906, at Manitowoc, son of the late Henry and Sophie Scheffler Guehlstorf. He was a graduate of Lincoln High School, Manitowoc, Class of 1923. He was employed as a steamfitter for various companies and contractors, retiring in 1970. Mr. Guehlstorf was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 710; Steamfitters Local 601; and the U.C.T. Auxiliary. He married the former Ullanee J. Gigure on November 10, 1932, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manitowoc. After marriage the couple lived in Manitowoc until 1954 when they moved to South Milwaukee. They returned to Manitowoc in 1970. She preceded him in death on July 31, 1989. (Survivors omitted for privacy) He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Guehlstorf, and a sister, Ella Zigmund. RICHARD K. GUEHLSTORF cemetery #43 Richard K. Guehlstorf, age 70, of Manitowoc, died Monday, Jan, 12, 2004, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Francis Kerscher with burial at Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc. Military graveside rites will be accorded by VFW Otto Oas Post #659, Manitowoc. He was born May 1, 1933, in Manitowoc, son of the late Karl and Ullanee Gigure Guehlstorf. Dick was a graduate of Manitowoc Lincoln High School, class of 1951. He then obtained his associate degree from Lakeshore Technical Institute. Dick also served with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was employed for 33 years with Paragon Electric as a tool and die maker, retiring May 1, 1995. He was a member of the Roncalli Athletic Association, serving four terms as secretary. ULLANEE GUEHLSTORF cemetery #43 Mrs. Karl (Ullanee) Guehlstorf, 82, of Manitowoc, died Monday afternoon, July 31, 1989, at North Ridge Care Center, Manitowoc. Private family services will be 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Pfeffer Funeral Home and 10 am. at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Presiding at the Mass of Christian Burial will be Rev. Leo J. Schmitt with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc. The former Ullanee Josephine Gigure was born July 22, 1907, in Hurley, Wisconsin, daughter of the late Joseph and Mabel Ritchay Gigure. She was a graduate of Beloit College and had taught grade school in South Milwaukee and Cudahy. She also was employed at Henderson Hoyt Department Store here in Manitowoc. She married Karl R. Guehlstorf on November 10, 1932, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manitowoc. After their marriage the couple lived in Manitowoc until 1957 when they moved to South Milwaukee and returned to Manitowoc in 1970. Mrs. Guehlstorf was a member of Catholic Womens Club, UCT Auxiliary, Manitowoc Senior Citizens and Catholic Knights. She also was a member and former president of St. Paul Christian Mothers Altar Society, member and former president of St. John Christian Mothers Altar Society of South Milwaukee, member and former president of Holy Innocents Christian Mothers Altar Society, lay communion distributor at Holy Innocents Church and also taught CCD Religious Classes at Holy Innocents. Erma was born July 28, 1908 in Two Rivers, the daughter of the late Carl & Amelia Schmidt Lenhart. She graduated from St. John’s Lutheran School, and Washington High School, with the class of 1926. After her graduation, she became a stenographer at the Bank of Two Rivers, where she worked for many years. On September 9, 1944 she married Leslie C. Guetschow at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church He preceded her in death February 19, 1998. She was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, and was an active member of the Dorcas Society, and St. John’s Ladies Aid. LESLIE C. GUETSCHOW cemetery #89C Leslie C. Guetschow, age 91, of Two Rivers, died Thursday evening, February 19, 1998, at his residence. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 24, 1998, at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Two Rivers. Rev. Edward Stelter will officiate with burial to follow at Forest View Cemetery, Two Rivers. He was born on May 11, 1906, on the family farm in the town of Two Creeks, son of the late Edward and Ida Retzlaff Guetschow. He attended and graduated from the Twin Elder State Grade School and graduated from the Washington High School in 1923. He later graduated from the Manitowoc County Teachers College, and taught for six years at Fillmore School which was located four miles west of Two Rivers. He was then appointed to principal of the State Graded School in the Town of Two Creeks. Later he enrolled at the Milwaukee Teachers College from which he received his teaching degree. In 1931, he became employed as a teller at the Two Rivers Savings Bank, presently Norwest Bank from which he retired as president in 1975. On September 9, 1944, he married the former Erma Lenhart at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Two Rivers. During World War II, he served in the United States Army Coast Artillery from 1942 to 1944, attaining the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. During his lifetime, Leslie was active in many civic and church related activities. He was a lifelong member of St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church and served on the church council and also as president of the Lutheran Mens Club. He was a past president of the Manitowoc County Teachers Association and the Two Rivers Lions Club. He also served as a past secretary of the Two Rivers Police and Fire Commission and as an officer and director of the Manitowoc County Expo. MATHILDA GUETSCHOW cemetery #89A Mrs. Emil Guetschow, 77, of 3017 Jackson St., Two Rivers, a native of the Town of Two Creeks, died at noon New Year's Day at Two Rivers Municipal Hospital where she had been a patient for two weeks. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Our Savior Evan. Lutheran Church, Two Rivers, the Rev. W.G. Haase officiating. Burial will be in Pioneers' Rest Cemetery, Two Rivers. Mrs. Guetchow, nee Mathilda Zierzow, was born Oct. 3, 1882 in the Town of Two Creeks, a daughter of the late Charles and Fredericka Lienow Zierzow. She attended Lakeview School in the township. She was married June 21, 1905 to Emil Guetschow in Two Rivers. Until her husband's death in 1950 she resided on the Town of Two Creeks farm. She was a member of St. John Lutheran congregation of Two Rivers. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Steve Vondrachek of Two Rivers; six sons, Raphael, Arnold, Arthur and Wilbert of Two Rivers; Edgar of Rt. 1, Kewaunee, and Emil of Rt. 1, Two Rivers; two sisters, Mrs. Frank Tetzlaff and Mrs. Ivan Schroeder of Two Rivers; two brothers, Arthur of Rt. 1, Two Rivers, and Emil Zierzow of Two Rivers, and 12 grand- children. BERTHA GUETZLOE cemetery #44 Mrs. William J. Guetzloe, 74, of 707 Jay street, died Monday night at the home. She had been seriously ill three weeks. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. from the Pfeffer funeral home. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. Mrs. Guetzloe, nee Bertha Matthaeus, was born in Kiel in 1865 and the family later moved to Nordheim where her father was a well-known merchant. She was married at Kiel in 1888 to Mr. Guetzloe and they located in Kiel, where he was postmaster for 18 years. He also operated a general store. In 1918 the Guetzloes came to this city to reside. Last August Mr. and Mrs. Guetzloe celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Survivors are the widower; daughter, Mrs. W.J. Taylor of Wisconsin Rapids; two sons, Harvey Guetzloe, assistant managing editor of the New York Times and Lester Guetzloe, assistant professor of journalism at Ohio State University. CHARLES GUETZLOE cemetery #82 Charles Guetzloe, a prominent Kiel citizen, passed away Friday at his home on Broadway Street, following a lengthy illness. Funeral services were conducted at the Meiselwitz Funeral home, with Rev. E. L. Worthman officiating. Burial was made in the Kiel cemetery. Pallbearers were Emil Raquet, John Rabe, Henry Jochmann and Herman Roehr. Mrs. Harry Dawurske and Mrs. Anthniel Raquet rendered several anthems at the funeral home. The deceased was born in the town of Newton March 21, 1867, the son of Giesbert William and Marie Wallich Guetzloe. In 1893 he moved to Kiel and the following year was married to Margaret Menne, and the couple has resided here ever since. For about 26 years Mr. Guetzloe was employed at the Kiel Furniture Co. and was assessor for the city of Kiel for seven years. He was a member of the Redman. Survivors include his wife; a son, Royal of Minneapolis, Minn.; four daughters, Miss Lillian of Milwaukee, Mrs. Edward (Viola) Luehrs and Mrs. Henry (Minerva) Aggen of New Holstein, and Mrs. Lawrence (Leona) Hennings of this city; a brother, William of Manitowoc; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. LILLIAN M. GUETZLOE cemetery #82 Miss Lillian Guetzloe, 77, of 2135 E. Tripoli St., Milwaukee, died Tuesday evening at St. Francis Hospital, there, where she had been hospitalized the past two weeks. A native of Kiel, she was born Oct. 16, 1895 a daughter of the late Charles and Margaret Menne Guetzloe. She attended Kiel public schools and graduated from Kiel High School in 1914. Miss Guetzloe was an employee of Phoeniz Hosiery, Milwaukee, until her retirement three years ago. She was a member of the Business and Professional Ladies Club of Milwaukee. Survivors are three sisters, Mrs. Viola Luehrs and Mrs. Minerva Aggen of New Holstein and Mrs Lawrence Hennings of Kiel and nieces and nephews. A brother preceded her in death. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel, with the Rev. Albert K. Borns, pastor of St. John United Church of Christ, New Holstein, officiating. MARGARET GUETZLOE cemetery #82 Mrs. Margaret Guetzloe, 86, a former Kiel resident, died Thursday morning at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Viola Luehrs, of 2112 Wisconsin Ave., New Holstein. Mrs. Guetzloe was born Nov. 15, 1875, in the Town of Rhine, Sheboygan County, daughter of the late Peter and Margaret Schad Menne. She was married to Charles Guetzloe at Kiel on Jan. 27, 1894. The couple resided at Kiel where her husband was superintendent of Kiel Furniture Co. He preceded her in death in February 1948. She then made her home with her daughter. She was a member of Kiel Frauen Verein and Royal Neighbors of America. Survivors include a son, Royal of Minneapolis, Minn., four daughters, Miss Lillian Guetzloe of Milwaukee, Mrs. Viola Luehrs and Mrs. Minerva Aggen of New Holstein and Mrs. Lawrence Henning of Kiel, eight grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. MARIE GUETZLOE cemetery #44 Kiel’s Oldest Resident Dies At Advanced Age of 95 The oldest resident of Kiel, and one of the oldest in the county, Mrs. Marie Guetzloe, nee Wallich, passed away at her home at 2 o’clock Thursday morning of last week. Death was attributed to the infirmities of old age. She had reached the age of 95 years and about 11 months. Mrs. Guetzloe was born in Koln, Germany, February 16, 1836. In 1848 she came to America with her parents, landing in Buffalo, N. Y. and came to Manitowoc in the spring of 1849. The family settled on a farm in the town of Newton, four miles south of Manitowoc. In 1852 her father died, leaving her mother with six small children in what may be called a wilderness. In 1855 she married William G. Guetzloe and settled on the old homestead. When the Civil war broke out in 1862 her husband volunteered and served through the war leaving her to shift as best as she could with five small children to support. At the close of the war he returned an invalid and died in 1867. She never remarried and continued on the farm until 1890 when she retired, turning the farm over to her married daughter, Ida. The family consisted of three sons, Gustave, William and Charles, and two daughters, Ida and Antonia, of which only William J. Guetzloe of Manitowoc, and Charles G. Guetzloe, of Kiel, survive. One child died in early infancy. She had resided at Kiel practically since she relinquished the farm, living in her own home at 513 Broadway, adjacent to the home of her son, Charles, who with his family guarded her welfare. She is survived also by 23 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the home, the last rites being conducted by Emil Meinardus. Pallbearers were Rudolph Greve, Philip A. Mueller, and Herman Roehr of this city, and Henry Aggen, Edward Luehrs, and Lawrence Hennings of New Holstein. Interment was in the Evergreen cemetery, Manitowoc, where her husband was buried 65 years ago. Those from out of the city present for the last rites included the following: Mr. and Mrs. Albert Wallich, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bringolff and Miss Lillian Gueszloe of Milwaukee; Mrs. Josephine Muesiel and Mr. and Mrs. W. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Aggen and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Hennings and family, all of New Holstein. 1932 ********** Resident of County 83 Years Passes ONE OF OLDEST RESIDENTS IS SUMMONED Mother of William J. Guetzloe Dies at Kiel at Age of 95 Years; Came Here in 1848 Another of the early pioneer settlers of Manitowoc county has passed with the death of Kiel last night of Mrs. Marie Guetzloe, mother of William J. Guetzloe of this city, and one of the oldest residents of the county. Mrs. Guetzloe was 95 at her death and had been a resident of Manitowoc county since 1848, eighty- three years, probably the oldest continuous resident at her death. Native of Germany Marie Wallich was born at Koln Germany, Feb. 16, 1836 and came to Manitowoc county with her parents at the age of 12, the family settling on a farm in Newton, four miles south of this city. The death of her father in 1852 left the mother and family of six children to fight their way in what was virtually a wilderness. The marriage of Mrs. Guetzloe to William Guetzloe took place in 1855 and the couple took up their home on the old homestead where Mrs. Guetzloe continue to reside until 1890 when after turning the farm over to her daughter, she took up her home with a son, Christian, at Kiel. Widowed After Civil War Mr. Guetzloe, at outbreak of the Civil war, volunteered for service leaving Mrs. Guetzloe with five small children on the farm. He returned from the war an invalid and passed away in 1867. The widow with her little family carried on and Mrs. Guetzloe never married, remaining on the old homestead until taking up her residence at Kiel, where the declining years of life were passed with every care and attention to "Mother." Mrs. Guetzloe was the mother of three sons and two daughters, only two sons, Christian of Kiel, and William J., of this city, surviving her. Mrs. Guetzloe passed away at 2 o'clock this morning, death being calm and due to advanced age. WILLIAM J. GUETZLOE William J. Guetzloe, 91, retired, died Sunday night at Shady Lane Home for the Aged, Manitowoc, where he had resided the past two years. His former address was 707 Jay St., Manitowoc. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Tuesday at the Frazier Mortuary, Manitowoc, with Christian Science services. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Guetzloe, who was born Feb. 15, 1862, at Newton, had a varied business career. He served as postmaster at Kiel for 16 years and then served as Manitowoc County circuit court clerk from 1917-1918 before becoming office manager for McMullen and Pitz Construction Company, Manitowoc. He was employed in that capacity until his retirement in 1936. In 1888 he married the former Bertha Matthaeus and she died in 1939. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. W. J. Taylor of Wisconsin Rapids; two sons, Harvey W. Guetzloe of New York City and Lester C. Guetzloe of Columbus, Ohio; and three grandchildren. LOUIS GUEX cemetery #63 Louis Guex, 86, retired town of Gibson farmer, died at the homestead early this morning following a stroke. Mr. Guex was born in Switzerland January 11, 1854 and came to America in 1890. He came directly to Wisconsin. Thirty-two years ago he took up farming on the present homestead now operated by his son Ernest. Mr. Guex married Hortense Bessard, who died in 1917. March 6, 1940


CARRIE GUGGENHEIM cemetery #89A Mrs. Carrie Guggenheim, 72, formerly of Two Rivers, died Sunday afternoon at Manitowoc County Hospital. Mrs. Guggenheim was born June 18, 1890, in the Town of Two Rivers, daughter of the late John and Anna Barta Herian. She attended rural schools in the Town of Two Rivers and later was employed at Zulu Knitting Co. and in the office of plant 4 of Mirro Aluminum Co., Two Rivers. She moved to Chicago where she was married to Henry Guggenheim. The couple resided there until his retirement in 1945 when the couple came back to Two Rivers and made its home with her sister, Miss Josephine Herian. Her husband preceded her in death in 1947. JOHN GUHIN cemetery #55 John Guhin, pioneer resident of Manitowoc county, died at the family home at Maple Grove Saturday evening. Deceased was born in Ireland in 1838 and reached the advanced age of 82 years. He came to America in 1855 and in 1868 was married to the wife who with four children survive him. Mr. Guhin was prominent in political and agricultural affairs of the county and was well known. The children are Mrs. John Sheridan, of Chicago, John of Syracuse, N.Y., Timothy of Dakota, Ill. Also one brother, Patrick, of Maple Grove and one sister, Mrs. Linane, also of Maple Grove. The funeral will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, morning at Maple Grove. Manitowoc Herald News, Manitowoc, Wis. He came to the United States in 1929 and located in Evanston, Ill. He married Hildegard Roderweiss Sept. 17, 1932, at Evanston. The couple came to Manitowoc in 1946 locating in the Town of Schleswig. Mr. Guhl was affiliated with the Great Lakes Tool and Engineering Co. of Manitowoc. He was a member of the F & AM Lodge No. 336 of Kiel and the Manitowoc County Shrine Club of Two Rivers. ERWIN A. GULBRAND cemetery #89C Erwin A. Gulbrand, age 86, a resident of the Hamilton Memorial Home, Two Rivers, died early Sunday morning, October 8, 2000 at the Hamilton Home. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Wednesday, October 11, 2000 at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Two Rivers. The Rev. Edward Stelter will officiate at the service, with burial to follow in Forest View Cemetery, Two Rivers. Erwin was born December 1, 1913 in Two Rivers, son of the late Hans Peter and Emma (nee Behnke) Gulbrand Marek. He attended school in Denmark, Wis. On March 30, 1940 he was married to Irene Bruechert at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Two Rivers. The couple celebrated 60 years of marriage this past March. Erwin worked on the coal boats on the Great Lakes for the C. Reis Coal Co. for a number of years, before the couple began farming in the town of Carlton, Kewaunee County, where they operated a dairy farm for over 30 years. During the same period of time Erwin also worked for the Two Creeks Air Force Radar Base and was also employed at Manitowoc Engineering Co., where he retired from in 1976. Erwin was very active in his church, having taught Sunday school for many years and attended many Bible classes. He enjoyed sharing his faith with others. He also enjoyed traveling and visiting with family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday Dec. 3, 2002 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Two Rivers. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Edward Stelter, with burial to follow in Forest View Cemetery, Iwo Rivers. Irene was born Dec. 26, 1914 in Tisch Mills, daughter of the late Edward and Octavia "Lena" (Olsen) Bruechert. She attended the East Twin School. On March 30, 1940 she married Erwin Gulbrand at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Two Rivers. He preceded her in death on Oct. 8, 2000. Together the couple operated a dairy farm in the town of Carlton, Kewaunee County, for more than 30 years. Irene was very active with the St. John’s Ladies Society and also taught Sunday school at the church for many years. She was a longtime volunteer at the Hamilton Memorial Home and also delivered Meals-On-Wheels. Irene enjoyed crotcheting and baking, especially making kolatches for family and friends. SIMON GUNDERSON cemetery #44 NORTH WATER ST. RESIDENT IS CALLED Simon Gunderson Fails to Survive Illness of Week Simon Gunderson, a resident of the ciy and county for seventy years, died at home on North Water street last night following an illness of two weeks. He had been confined to his bed for only a week and his condition was not believed to be serious, death coming unexpectedly. The funeral will be held tomorrow, Friday, afternoon from the home with services at St. Paul's Lutheran church at 2 o'clock, the Rev. O.K. Espeseth officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen. Mr. Gunderson was born at Bamic Norway, December 26, 1834, and would have been ninety at his next birthday. He came to this country and settled at Manitowoc July 4, 1854. for many years he served as a ship carpenter and later engaged in farming, retiring about fifteen years ago. He was twice married, his first wife dying some forty years ago, and is survived by his widow, one daughter, Mrs. H.T. Erickson of Milwaukee, and two grandchildren, Florence and Seielen(?) Erickson. In spite of his advanced years Mr. Gunderson was in full enjoyment of all his faculties, kept in touch with local and world events, did a great deal of reading and was a most unusual man in many respects. He made a wide circle of friends for himself by his gracious and considerate ways and his passing will be mourned. ERNESTINE GUSE cemetery #17 From Der Nord Westen, 11 July 1901: Death Sun., 07 July, in Greenstreet in Town Cooperstown of Mrs. Ernestine Guse of old age debility. The deceased was born in Doro, Brandenburg on 24 Mar. 1823 and came to America in 1855 with her husband, who preceded her in death in 1895. The couple settled in Town Cooperstown where they lived until their deaths. 6 of their 13 children survive her - Wilhelm, Frank, Hermann, and Julius Guse, and a daughter Mrs. Horstmann. (The article says there are 6 surviving children but only names 5). In addition she is survived by 23 grandchildren and one great- grandchild. The funeral of Mrs. Guse took place Tues. afternoon in Greenstreet. Pastor Sieker conducted the service. The number of vehicles in the funeral procession was exceptional.

He married Ernestine Wegner in 1841, a marriage that produced 13 children, of whom 7 are deceased; 4 sons and 2 daughters, all grown, survive him. In 1857 the deceased came to America, settling in Town Cooperstown where he was self-employed as a blacksmith and farmer. The funeral took place 11 Sept., conducted by Pastor Sieker.


KATHARINA GUSE cemetery #63 From Der Nord Westen, 23 Jan. 1896: (From the correspondent in Mishicott, 21 Jan.) Death last Sun. evening in Town Gibson of Mrs. Robert Guse, of dropsy, at the age of 42 yrs. and a few weeks. Mrs. Guse was born in 1853 in Wesel in the Rhineland and came to America with her parents in 1855, living with them in Town Gibson. She married in 1873 to Robert Guse with whom she had 2 children, both of whom are deceased. She leaves her husband, her mother and 2 sisters. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at the local cemetery.


RUDOLPH GUSE cemetery #63 From Der Nord Westen, 21 Jan. 1897: (From the correspondent in Mishicott, 12 Jan.) Last Thurs., 07 Jan., there was a terrible incident in Town Gibson near Mishicott, involving Rudolph, the 13 yr. old son of Adolph Guse. He was playing with his friends in the schoolhouse of Dist. #2 in Town Mishicott, when his older brother, by two yrs., passed by from a rabbit hunt and sat down on a nearby bench to gossip with some friends. Young Rudolph went over and tried to snatch away his brother’s gun and pulled it toward himself. In an instant the gun went off and the entire load hit him on his right side. As quickly as possible he was taken home and Dr. G. L. Karnopp was called, but it was too late. Death came 12 hrs. later. He was the youngest child of 7. His burial took place last Sun. at the local general cemetery.


WALTER GUSE cemetery #63 Walter Guse, 77, formerly of 1117 Madison St., Two Rivers, died early Friday morning at Maple Crest Rest Home, Whitelaw, where he resided the past four years. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Emanuel United Methodist church, Two Rivers, the Rev. Karl F. Koch officiating. Burial will be in Mishicot Public Cemetery. Mr. Guse was born in the Town of Gibson June 4, 1895, son of the late William and Bertha Kempfert Guse. He attended the district school and was an overseas Army veteran of World War I. He operated the homestead farm in the Town of Gibson until 1948 when he removed to Two Rivers, where he became engaged in the carpenter trade. In later years he was custodian at Emanuel church. He was a member of the Men's Brotherhood of the church and the Senior Citizens of Two Rivers. Mr. Guse married Alice March at Manitowoc May 20, 1953. Besides his wife he leaves a stepdaughter, Mrs. Marvin (June) Dorak, of Manitowoc; a stepson, William March, of Manitowoc, and three step- grandchildren and several nieces. MARIE LEONA GUSTAFSON cemetery #63 Marie Leona Gustafson, age 89, a resident of the Hamilton Memorial Home in Two Rivers, died Thursday, April 22, 2004 at the Aurora Medical Center, in Two Rivers, after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 26, 2004 at the Lambert-Eckert Funeral Home in Mishicot, with the Rev. Paul Paider officiating, with burial to follow in the Mishicot Public Cemetery. Marie was born in Milwaukee, on May 1, 1914, and has been an area resident since 1942. She attended beauty school. Marie married Ralph "Swede" Gustafson in December 1969, in Tisch Mills, and he preceded her in death June 23, 1984. She was employed as a beautician for many years, and enjoyed gardening. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Mishicot. Marie is survived by several stepchildren and stepgrandchildren and by a very special friend. CAPT. CHARLES GUSTAVESON cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 12 Apr. 1894: Death last Thurs. of Capt. Charles Gustaveson following a short illness, at 73 yrs. of age. As a young man he attended the Military Academy in Stockholm and served later as a lieutenant in the Swedish army. He came to American in 1846 and served in the war against Mexico. In 1862 he entered the Civil War with the 15th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. Gustman, 90, formerly of 1013 S. 19th St., Manitowoc, resident of Shady Lane Nursing Home, Manitowoc, the past three years, died Monday afternoon at Memorial Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Wesley United Methodist Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Donald T. Stannard will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mr. Gustman was born Nov. 9, 1882, at Wrightstown, son of the late Karl and Wilhelmina Schroeder Gustman. He married Abbie Nohr June 2, 1904, at Morrison. He farmed in his early years, coming to Manitowoc in 1920. He was employed at Manitowoc Shipbuilding Inc., retiring 25 years ago. Survivors include his wife, four daughters, Mrs. Clarence (Lenora) Hetzberg and Mrs. Gordon (Garnet) James, of Berlin, Mrs. Herbert (Verona) Gutknecht, of Milwaukee and Mrs. Ernst (Erma) Vogel, of Manitowoc; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. FERDINAND R. GUTHEIL cemetery #84 G00D MAN 1S CALLED THE FIRST MAYOR OF CHILTON DEAD Ferdinand R. Gutheil at One Time a Prominent Business Man in this City Died at Waukesha. Word reached this city Tuesday that Ferdinand R. Gutheil died at his home in Waukesha on Monday, April 22nd of heart disease. Mr. Gutheil was enjoying his usual good health until about two weeks ago when he was stricken with the sickness from which he died. The deceased was born in Thuringen, Germany, Aug. 28, 1833 and came to America in 1846, locating with other members of the family in the town of Mequon, Ozaukee county, where he resided until 1856 when he moved to Kiel, and in company with his brothers he engaged in the brewing business. While a resident of Kiel he was married to Marie Hayssen, daughter of the late Captain A. G. Hayssen. In 1866 he came to Chilton and established a brewery on the sight now occupied by the Calumet Brewing company. He disposed of his interest in the Brewery in the early eighties to Nicholas Thomas and shortly after moved to Missouri where he remained a short time and then went further west to Gunnison, Colorado, where he continued in the brewing business. In the early nineties he returned to Wisconsin and engaged in the milling business with his son Arthur, in which he was interested up to the time of his death. While a resident of Chilton he took an active interest in public affairs and enjoyed the distinction of being the first mayor of the town after its incorporation 1877. He was also a member of the Chilton~Masonic and Odd Fellow lodges and was recognized as one of the leading men of affairs of the town. He is survived by a widow, one son Arthur of Waukesha and four daughters, Mrs. Geo. Brickbauer of Plymouth, Mrs. Louis Laun of Elkhart Lake. Mrs. Richard Gove and Mrs. A. F. Bingenheimer of Milwaukee. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at Waukesha and the body was taken to Kiel Thursday for interment. (No newspaper named, 4-27-1912)


JOHANNA C.E. GUTHEIL cemetery #84 F. R. Gutheil, of this city, received a telegram on Thursday of last week informing him that his mother, Mrs. J. Gutheil, aged 80 years, had died suddenly at Kiel. Some two weeks ago she visited her son in this city and returned to the home of her son Louis in Kiel. On Thursday some friends called on her and while in conversation she fell forward and expired, from heart trouble, to which she has been subject for some years. The deceased was born in Germany in 1820. She came to America with her husband and family and located in the town of Mequon, Ozaukee county, where she resided a few years and then moved to Kiel, Manitowoc county. She was a kind, generous neighbor, a fond and loving mother, and was respected by those who knew her. The funeral occurred Saturday and was largely attended. She leaves three sons. F. R., of this city, Louis and Oscar, and one daughter, Mrs. Aug. Krieger, of Milwaukee. MARIE GUTHEIL cemetery #84 Called By Death. Death claimed Mrs. Marie Gutheil, nee Hayssen, widow of Ferdinand Gutheil, at the home of her son Arthur at Waukesha Tuesday evening. She was born in Germany, Dec. 20, 1841, and reached the age of 80 yrs. The deceased succumbed to an attack of heart trouble after two days' illness. Mr. and Mrs. Gutheil were old-time residents of the town of Schleswig, residing about two miles east of Kiel, where Mr. Gutheil conducted a brewery for many years. He passed away April 22, 1912, at Waukesha, where they made their home after leaving here about 25 years ago. The survivors are four daughters and one son, namely: Mrs. Geo. Brickbauer, M.D. of Plymouth; Mrs. Louis Laun of Elkhart Lake, Mrs. Rich. Gove of Berkely, Cal.; Mrs. Alf. Bingenheimer of Couer D'Lane, Idaho, and Arthur Guteil of Waukesha; also one brother, Fred. Hayssen of Madison, and one sister, Mrs. Helen Gutheil of Salt Lake City, Utah; and 12 grandchildren and 1 great- grandchild. The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon, from Meiselwitz's undertaking rooms, interment to take place in the family lot in the Rockville cemetery. Rev. JULIA GUTTMAN cemetery #44 DIES AFTER BEING ON WAY TO RECOVERY Mrs. Albert Guttman Passes Away at Battle Creek Mrs. Julia Guttman, wife of Albert J. Guttman died at the Battle Creek Sanitarium at Battle Creek, Mich., at 1:30 this morning, the end coming suddenly when she was believed to be on the road to recovery. Mr. Guttman and his nephew, Fred Alter, left at noon for the Michigan city to bring back the body. Funeral arrangements will be announced later. News of the death will come as a shock to a wide circle of friends, it being unexpected. Mrs. Nic Kettenhoggen had started for Battle Creek on the 5 o'clock train this morning to visit Mrs. Guttman, who is her sister, but was notified of the death on the train enroute to Milwaukee and returned to the city. Mr. Guttman had visited his wife last week and found her much improved in health. He had started out on his regular trip for the Manitowoc Seed company, of which he is president and general manager, and was located at Ripon where he was informed of the death. He returned to the city immediately and with Mr. Alter left at noon for Michigan. 45 Years of Age Mrs. Guttman who previous to her marriage was Miss Julia Matek, was born in this city April 3, 1879 and was forty-five years of age. She received her early education in the local schools and later attended the state normal securing a teacher's certificate and for many years served on the teaching staff of the local school both at what is now the Washington Junior High school and the Garfield school. Ten years ago June 17 she was married to Mr. Guttman and the couple have alsways made their home here, having a fine residence at the corner of North Seventh and Park street. She is survived by her husband, her mother, Mrs. Jacob Matek and one sister, Mrs. Nic Kettenhoffen. Passenger on Wrecked Train About sixteen years ago Mrs. Guttman, who was then a teacher, made a trip west with a group of Wisconsin educators and was a passenger on the steamer Columia when it was wrecked in a Pacific coast storm. She was rescued but a companion, Miss Francis Schroeder of Two Rivers lost her life and she is said never to have fully recovered from that experience as her nerves were shattered. Gutschow Mrs. Fred Gutschow, 68, passed away at her home, 1818 Saemann avenue, at 11:15 a.m., Thursday, following a lingering illness. Mrs. Gutschow was born in Maple Hill, Wis., Jan. 22, 1870 and was married to Fred Gutschow in Hamlin, N.Y., Aug. 15, 1891. The couple resided at Hamlin for 14 years. In 1906 they came to Wisconsin and located at School Hill, where the family lived until nine years ago, since which time they lived in Sheboygan. A home-loving wife and mother, Mrs. Gutschow’s greatest interests were centered in her home and family. She is survived by her husband, three sons, Frank of Kalamazoo, Mich.; Carl of School Hill, and Lawrence, this city; two daughters, Mrs. Henry Diem, School Hill, and Emily, at home; nine grandchildren, four brothers, William Paepke, Howard City, Mich.; Fred and Albert Paepke, Pierson City, Mich., and Frank Paepke, of Rockford, Mich. HENRY GUTSCHOW cemetery #87 Henry Gutschow, 79, of School Hill, a retired Town of Meeme farmer and former director of the St. Nazianz State Bank, died Tuesday afternoon at Manitowoc Memorial Hospital after an illness of four months. Born Jan. 18, 1882, in Germany, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Gutschow. At the age of three, he came with his parents to the United States, settling in the Town of Meeme. He attended the district school there and was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Louis Corners. On May 5, 1908, he married Miss Emma Goetsch of the Town of Meeme and they settled on a farm now operated by their son Norman. Mr. Gutschow retired from farming in 1938 but continued to live in the township. He and his wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1958. He was a director of the St. Nazianz bank from 1946 to 1960 and for many years was a director of the School Hill Cheese Co. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church at Louis Corners. Survivors are his wife; two sons, Gilbert and Norman Gutschow, both of rural Kiel; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Zion Church with the Rev. E. G. Behm, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Kiel, officiating in the absence of the Rev. William Hartwig, pastor. IDA (HENSCHEL) GUTSCHOW cemetery #87 Mrs. Ida Gutschow, 85, a former Town of Meeme and Sheboygan resident, died today at Rocky Knoll. She had been a resident of the annex for the past 22 months and a patient in the hospital for two weeks. The widow of the late Ernst Gutschow, she was born March 16, 1881, in the Town of Meeme, the daughter of the late Christine and Mary Henschel. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church in the Town of Centerville. On May 29, 1904, she was married at St. Peter and Paul Church. They operated the Gutschow home farm in the Town of Meeme for 30 years. Her husband died in May, 1934. Later she lived with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Karstaedt, Sheboygan. Mrs. Gutschow was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Louis Corners, and the church’s Ladies Aid Society. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Walter (Mabel) Karstaedt, Sheboygan, Mrs. Elmer (Norma) Nagel, rural Valders, and Mrs. Carl (Leora) Prigge, rural Cleveland; three sons, Walter, School Hill, Elwood, Town of Meeme, and Merlin, Plymouth; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Gosse, Longwood, Clark County, Wis., Mrs. Carl Boeldt, Manitowoc, Mrs. Alma Wernicke, Cleveland, and Mrs. Edna Schuette, Neenah. WALTER R. GUTSCHOW cemetery #87 Walter R. Gutschow, 67, of School Hill, a retired Manitowoc County Highway Department employe, died Tuesday evening at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital, following a three-week illness. He was born April 11, 1905 in the Town of Meeme, son of the late Ernest and Ida Henschel Gutschow. He attended Woodland School in the district. On Oct. 25, 1930 he married Norma Raquet of the Town of Schleswig at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Louis Corners. The couple lived at School Hill after marriage. Mr. Gutschow was a machine operator for the Highway Department until his retirement on July 1, 1970. He was a life-long gmember of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he was baptized and confirmed, a member of the Men's Club of the church and for 25 years a local secretary and treasurer of the Aid Association for Lutherans. He was also a member of the church building committe, a former church elder and a member of the School Hill Trap Club. HERMANN GUTTMAN cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 15 Aug. 1895: Death has claimed another of our old citizens, this time Mr. Hermann Guttmann on Sun. morning of Bright's disease. The deceased, who enjoyed a large number of acquaintances in the entire county, was born 19 Apr. 1831 in Landsberg, Kreis Rosenberg, Prussia. He came to America in 1856 and settled in Two Rivers where in 1858 he married Antonie Bertram. In 1859 he moved to Manitowoc where he has since resided. In his first years he established a cannery, but later established a leather business. He served a few terms as Alderman and Assessor in our city. In recent weeks he sickened but still could be found in his store, not being bedridden until the last two days. He is survived by his wife, 2 daughters and 5 sons. His well-attended funeral took place Tues. in the city cemetery with participation by the Hermanns Sons, United Workers (vereinigten Arbeiter), the Odd Fellows, and the Freemasons.


FRANK GUYLES cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 28 Feb. 1907: A telegram received here Tuesday reports that Frank Guyles died Monday in San Diego, California. Last fall he had given up his position as cashier for the Albert Landreth Co. here in order to seek possible relief for his illness in southern California. The body will be brought here for burial. The deceased, a son of the late sawmill owner Jacob F. Guyles, was born 56 years ago in Waukegan and came here as a child. He was an active, energetic business man, and made his influence felt in every project he engaged in. He was a captain on the lakes at an early day, and was well known among the veteran vessel men on the lake shore. His place will be hard to fill.
