MICHAEL GEBHARD cemetery #89A From Der Nord Westen, 04 July 1907: (From the correspondent in Two Rivers, 01 July) A large funeral was held here today. Mike Gebhart(sic), an old settler in our city who just celebrated his 84th birthday in May, died a few days ago. He operated a successful store here for many years before retiring. His wife died several years ago. He leaves 2 daughters –one married and living in Chicago, the other operates her father’s store here. The deceased had only been ill a short time. Pastor Ueberle gave the funeral address, and the church choir was also present. The Odd Fellows, to which order he had belonged, gave him the final official escort.

FRANK GEBHARDT cemetery #89A From Der Nord Westen, 17 Apr. 1879: Death of Frank Gebhardt on 14 Apr. in Two Rivers. He was born 20 July 1861, the son of Mr. M Gebhardt. He had been ill 43 weeks and his situation in the end was hopeless. His burial took place yesterday, Apr. 16 in the afternoon, and Mr. H. Stoll of Two Rivers delivered the death sermon.

HENRY GEBHARDT cemetery #89A From Der Nord Westen, 24 Oct. 1901: Henry M. Gebhard, one of the well-known business men of Two Rivers, died Tues. morning after an illness of several months. The deceased was born 04 Sep. 1855 in Two Rivers and lived there all his life. He personally ran a drugstore and was also manager of the telephone system in Two Rivers. He is survived by his sorrowing father and 2 sisters. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon under the direction of the Two Rivers Free Masons. *********** From Der Nord Westen, 31 Oct. 1901: (From the correspondent in Two Rivers, 28 Oct.) The funeral of our deceased pharmacist Henry Gebhard on Fri. afternoon was exceptional. The Free Masons, of whom he was a member, were there as well as County Judge Anderson of Manitowoc and Dr. C. Currens from here. Pastor Gray of the Episcopal Congregation in Manitowoc delivered the funeral oration.

AUGUST GEBLER cemetery #89A From Der Nord Westen, 07 Aug. 1890 (From the correspondent in Two Rivers, 05 Aug.) Death last week of "Father" GEBELER. The well-known and well-beloved gentlemen worked as a blacksmith here for many years and reached the age of 72 yrs. 11 mos. He leaves a widow and 4 children. His funeral last Sun. in the Evangelical Church was heavily attended.

ELLA IDA GEHBE cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 21 July 1887: Death by drowning yesterday about 5 o'clock of Ella Gehbe, the 9-yr. old daughter of Mr. August Gehbe. The child was playing a children's game with her playmates near the Zeman Kreynicks dock, and fell into the river. Help was called but by the time they arrived it was too late. Workmen from the Carl Zander factory pulled the body out with a rake, but medical help was of no avail

HEINRICH GEHBE cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 13 Jan. 1887: Death of 82-year old Henry Gehbe, one of the first settlers of Manitowoc, on Mon. evening. He came to this county 32 years ago. His wife, who has also been ill for quite a while, survives him, and he also leaves a large number of children.

GEHLING cemetery #89B From Der Nord Westen, 12 July 1894: (From the correspondent in Two Rivers, 09 July) Charles Goehling, an old settler here, died last weekend at age 73 after a 2 mo. illness. He belonged to the G.A.R. and the Odd Fellows Lodge (this latter connection was corrected in a later publication to St. Joseph’s Mutual Aid Society.) He leaves a large family.

MATHIAS GEIGEL cemetery #6 From Der Nord Westen, 08 May 1902: We must belatedly report that Mathias Geigel died suddenly in Clarks Mills on 24 Apr. Mr. Geigel felt perfectly well all day and retired. Shortly afterward he cried out loudly and his wife asked what was wrong, to which he replied that he had had a terrible dream. A few minutes later Mrs. Geigel directed another question at her husband, but there was no answer and it was found that he was no longer breathing and life was gone. A stroke had killed him. Mathias Geigel reached the age of 74 yrs. 4 mos., was born in Bohemia, came to America about 36 yrs. ago and settled in Clarks Mills where he has lived ever since. He is survived by his sorrowing widow and 2 children. His funeral was held Mon. last week.

ANTHONY P. GEIMER (TONY) cemetery #89A From the Two Rivers Reporter, Wed. Dec. 12, 1951 Geimer is dead at Two Rivers Heart Attack Fatal To Retired Resident TWO RIVERS - Anthony P. (Tony) Geimer, 70, retired general superintendent of the Hamilton Manufacturing Company, died Tuesday afternoon at his home, 2601 Washington St., following a heart attack. Mr. Geimer, active in Masonic circles and a former basketball and baseball player, was in apparent good health until stricken early Tuesday. Masonic funeral services will be held at Grace Congregational church at 2 p.m. Friday, the Rev. Richard J. Wichlei officiating. Masonic rites at the church and at Pioneers Rest cemetery will be directed by Heber Clayton, past master of the Two Rivers Masonic Lodge. Mr. Geimer was born in the town of Gibson Feb. 28, 1881, a son of the late Jacob and Margaret Spang Geimer. He was 10 years old when the family moved to Two Rivers, where as a boy he learned the butcher trade at the old Main Street meat market operated by the late Richard Kahlenberg. In April 1899, he entered the employ of the Hamilton Company. Assigned to a carpenter bench he worked as a cabinet maker until 1913 when the steel plant of the firm was erected. That year he was promoted to a foreman in the steel plant and in 1918 became the division's superintendent. The genial mild-mannered Mr. Geimer, popular with the Hamilton employees, continued in the capacity of steel plant superintendent until 1932 when he was named general superintendent. After 48 years with the Hamilton firm, which he saw grow from a payroll of less than 200 to more than 1500, he retired in July, 1947. On Original RAC Team Mr. Geimer took keen interest in sports activities. He displayed marked talent as a baseball player and was shortstop on the city team, the Colts, at the turn of the century. In 1904 when the Reach Athletic Club organized one of the first basketball teams in this area better clubs in the middle west, Mr. Geimer was one of the original members. Mr. Geimer's identification with the Masonry dates back nearly 40 years ago, having been accepted into the Two Rivers Blue Lodge in February 1912. He served the lodge as worshipful master in 1918 and 1919. His other Masonic affiliations include membership in the Barney G. Lyman chapter 116, Royal Arch Masons, the Manitowoc council of the Ancient and Select Masters, the Low Twelve Club of the Two Rivers Blue Lodge, the Manitowoc Commandery No. 45, Knights Templars: the Wisconsin Consistory, and the Tripoli Temple Shrine of Milwaukee. He was also active in the Two Rivers Shrine Club, and also belonged to the "Hamilton 30 year Club." (Survivors omitted for privacy) In 1902 the marriage of Miss Muriel Bemis, a member of the pioneer Two Rivers family, and Mr. Geimer took place. She survives with a daughter, Mrs. Edward Jann, and a son, Oswald Geimer, both of Two Rivers. He also leaves six sisters, Mrs. David LaFond and Mrs. George Paska, both of this city; Miss Matilda Geimer of Milwaukee, Mrs. Joseph Bunker of Villa Park, Ill., Sister M. Imelda of Altoona, Pa., and Mrs. Fred Beth of this city, two brothers, Roland Geimer of San Marino, Cal., and Cornelius Geimer of Sturgis, Mich., a step sister, Mrs. Charles Weix of this city, Mrs. Michael Bartelme of Superior. There are two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Friends may call at the Beduhn, Deja and Martin Inc. funeral home from 7 p.m. Thursday until 10 a.m. Friday when the casket will be moved to Grace Congregational church. GERALD E. GEIMER cemetery #32 Gerald E. Geimer, age 68, of Two Rivers, joined his Lord in his Heavenly home, Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at the Two Rivers Community Hospital. Funeral Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 11, 2000, at the Faith Ev. Free Church, Manitowoc. Rev. Rick Hines and Rev. Ray Caldwell will officiate, with entombment at Knollwood Mausoleum, town of Kossuth. He was born February 13, 1932, in Two Rivers, son of the late Urban L. and Gertrude Forst Geimer. He attended St. Luke Parochial School and Washington High School. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. On July 14, 1972, he married Mary Marx. He is retired from Kelvinator Products, where he was employed as a machinist. His memberships include the Men's Garden Club, Two Rivers French Canadian Club and he was actively involved in church building projects following his retirement. Geimer, early superintendent of Hamilton Mfg. Co. steel plant at Two Rivers, a member of one of Two Rivers earliest families and whose grandfather was the first practicing physician at Two Rivers, died Saturday afternoon at Ressel Nursing Home, Milwaukee. She had been residing with a daughter, Mrs. Beatrice Jann at Milwaukee for more than a year. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Deja and Martin Funeral Chapels, Two Rivers, the Rev. Richard H. Trump, pastor of the Grace Congregational Church, Two Rivers, officiating. Burial will be in Pioneers Rest Cemetery, Two Rivers. Mrs. Geimer, nee Muriel Bemis, was born at Two Rivers Feb. 28, 1882, daughter of the late Elmer and Wilhelmina Oswald Bemis. Her grandfather, the late Dr. John Oswald, was the first physician to practice at Two Rivers. She attended Two Rivers public schools and was married June 25, 1902, to Anthony P. Geimer, who died in Two Rivers in 1951. Mrs. Geimer was the last of the Bemis family in Two Rivers, which included two brothers, Atty. Harry, a legal counsel for the Soo Line Railroad, and Charles Bemis. For many years Mrs. Geimer was active in Two Rivers Chapter 229, Order of Eastern Star, of which she was a past matron. Besides the daughter, she leaves two grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. A son, Oswald, died two years ago. Friends may call at the funeral chapels after 3 p.m. Wednesday.

CELESTINE A. "SALLY" GEISER cemetery #32 Celestine A. "Sally" Geiser, age 86, of the Calumet Homestead Rehabilitation Center, New Holstein, died on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2002 at the center. She was born on March 12, 1916 in New Holstein, a daughter of the late Frank and Mathilda (Schwarz) Wagner. Sally married Gregory C. Geiser on April 28, 1937 at St. Gregory Catholic Church in St. Nazianz. He preceded her in death on Feb. 25, 1987. The couple had farmed in the Town of Chilton until their retirement. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Chilton, the Christian Mothers, and the Daughters of Isabella. (Survivors omitted for privacy) She was also preceded in death by a son, Michael Geiser, a son-in-law, Robert Gary; two grandchildren, Julie Geiser and John Kilgas; and two brothers, Alex & Alfred Wagner. There was a large funeral here Sat. of the well-known father of our Pastor Geissler of the Catholic Church, with whom he had been staying for some time. (Article does not name the father.)

JOSEPH A. GEISSLER, REV. cemetery 89B From the Wisconsin State Register [Portage, Columbia Co., Wisconsin], Friday March 9, 1923 Former Parish Priest Is Dead Father Giessler(sic), Once Pastor at St. Mary's Passes at Manitowoc Rev. Father Joseph A. Giessler, formerly priest at St. Mary's in this city, died at Holy Family Hospital at Manitowoc Tuesday morning, Feb. 27. His age was 69 years. For the past twenty-six years he had been in charge of St. Luke's congregation at Two Rivers. He was born at Paterson, New Jersey and was ordained to the priesthood at Louvain, Belgium, June 7, 1879. He served in a parish at Paterson before coming to Wisconsin to affiliate with the Green Bay diocese. Pastorates in this state were at DePere, Freedom, Portage, Custer, Kaukauna and Two Rivers, and for several months he conducted services at St. Martin's church at Almond. His only near relative is a sister, Miss Agnes Giessler, who makes her home at St. Luke's parsonage. Funeral services will be held at Two Rivers Saturday morning at 10:00 o'clock, with interment in St. Luke's cemetery. In telling of his demise the Stevens Point Daily Journal says: "Father Giessler was a zealous worker and untiring in his efforts for the betterment of his parishioners. He also took an active interest in civic affairs and was regarded as one of Two Rivers' most progressive citizens. He is especially remembered locally for his jovial disposition and abundance of wit."

Mr. Gelbke was born in Thuringia, coming to America and Manitowoc in 1868 where he has lived ever since. Although he has been ill for many years he still continued to work as a shoemaker until becoming bedridden a week ago, after which his health quickly declined. ALOIS J. GELLINGS cemetery #83 (No name for newspaper)1975 Alois J. Gellings, 89, a retired Town of Eaton farmer, died early today at St. Mary Home, Manitowoc, where he had been a resident six years. Born on July 24, 1886 at St. Nazianz, he was a son of the late John and Catherine Mueller Gellings. He attended St. Gregory Catholic School there. On May 10, 1921, he married Anna Broeckert at SS Peter and Paul Cathoic Church, Kiel. The couple located on a farm near St. Nazianz, retiring in 1947 when they moved to Kiel. Mrs. Gellings died July 24, 1953. While in Kiel, he was caretaker of the city cemetery. He was a member of SS Peter Paul Parish and its Holy Name Society. Survivors are a daughter, and two grandchildren. Two brothers preceded him in death. Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at SS. Peter and Paul Church, the Rev. Francis Kerscher, pastor, celebrant of mass. Brief family rites will be held at 9:30 a.m. at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. Friday where a service of the wake will be held at 8 p.m.

ANNA GELLINGS cemetery #83 Rites Held Monday For Mrs. A. Gellings Funeral services were held Monday morning from S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic church for Mrs. Alois Gellings, 70, who died at her home here Friday morning. She had been ill several months. The rites were conducted by the Rev. F.X. Kheil and burial was made in the church cemetery. She was born October 4, 1882, in the town of Schleswig. Her father's name was Fred Broeckert and her mother's maiden name was Catherine Loos. May 10, 1921 she was married to Alois Gellings and they operated a farm in the town of Eaton until their retirement six years ago, when they moved to this city. Survivors include her husband; one daughter, one grandson, Alfred; and two brothers, William Broeckert, rural route, Kiel, and Ed Broeckert of St. Nazianz. Her parents and one sister preceded her in death.

PETER GELLINGS cemetery #83 Peter Gellings Passes Away. Peter Gellings, aged 57, a resident of the town of Schleswig, two miles north of this city, passed away Thursday at 10 p.m. at the St. Camillus hospital at Wauwatosa, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Gellings was born December 5, 1884, in St. Nazianz, the son of John and Catherine Mueller Gellings. He attended the parochial school at St. Nazianz, and in 1917 moved to the present farm home with his brother, John, and they have resided there since. Survivors are two brothers, John on the homestead, and Aloys at St. Nazianz. Funeral services were held on Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the C.J. Meiselwitz Funeral Home, and at 10 a.m. services were conducted at the SS. Peter and Paul Catholic church, with the Rev. Father F.X. Kheil officiating. Pallbearers were John Gellings, Frank Mueller, John Endries, Ed Mueller, Clemens Endries and Peter Koenig. Burial was made in the church cemetery. Relatives and friends from Fond du Lac, West Allis, Sheboygan, St. Nazianz, School Hill, Eaton, Marytown and Chilton attended the services. (no newspaper named, 1942)

AUGUST GENNRICH cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 30 Jan. 1902: Another of our old German settlers is gone. August Gennrich closed his tired eyes for the last time on Thurs. evening. He was born 18 Oct. 1821 in Basedow, Pomerania, came to America in the early 50's and settled in our city where he has lived ever since. He and his wife celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary about 2 yrs. ago. In addition to his widow he leaves 6 children among whom are Wilhelm Gennrich, one of the editors of the "Manitowoc Post", and Mrs. F.C. Buerstatte. The funeral was held Sun. afternoon.

JOHN GEORGE Cemetery #44 From the Manitowoc Pilot November 23, 1905: John George, Sr., died last Thursday morning at 9 o'clock at the family home on South Main street. Asthma was the cause of his death. He was 72 years old. Mr. George was a native of Germany, and was married there in 1851. In 1858 they came to America and settled in Manitowoc county, where they resided continuously. The decedent's wife passed away about a year ago. He leaves ten children to mourn his departure. They are: Mrs. Ingbert Ingbertson, Mrs. Fred Gunderson and Mrs. George Gunderson, all of Sheboygen; Mrs. John Jackson of Chicago, Mrs. C. Weseman, Mrs. John Jarchow, Misses Mathilda and Leona George, Arthur and John W. George, all of this city. The decedent was a carpenter by trade. Since 1895 he had lived a retired life. He was a member of the Sons of Herman and of the Concordia Singing Society. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the house. Mr. George was a kind husband and father, and he was well thought of by all who knew him. John George was born 1833 in Hesse-Darmstadt. He married Anna M. Horst in 1851 and came to America in 1853. They settled in our city and have lived here ever since. His wife preceded him in death about a year ago. The deceased leaves 10 children, namely, Mrs. Fred Gunderson, Mrs. Ingbret Ingbretson, and Mrs. George Gunderson in Sheboygan; Mrs. John Jackson in Chicago; Mrs. John Jarchow, Mrs. C. Wesemann, Misses Mathilde and Laura, as well as sons Arthur and John W. here. Gerhard, 69, who was killed when his tractor overturned in a field, pinning him underneath. The accident happened Wednesday afternoon, and he was found by Herman Riesterer, a neighbor. A life-long resident of the town of Eaton, Mr. Gerhard is survived by his widow and two sons, and two daughters. Born Feb. 21, 1892, in the Town of Schleswig, she was a daughter of the late John and Barbara (Knier) Anhalt. She was married to Alex Gerhard Oct. 15, 1912, at St. Peter and Paul Church in Kiel. They farmed near St. Nazianz until the death of Mr. Gerhard Nov. 14, 1956, when she moved to St. Nazianz to make her home. She was a member of the St. Gregory Christian Mothers Society and the American Legion Auxiliary. Survivors are two sons, Arthur and Norman of St. Nazianz; two daughters, Mrs. Herbert Schworer and Mrs. William Schram of Sheboygan; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Mallach of Manitowoc and Mrs. Lena Altenberger of Sheboygan. She also was preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters. Funeral services will be held 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church following brief rites at 8:45 a.m. at Christianson Funeral Home in St. Nazianz. The Rev. The former Flora Dhein, she was born in the Town of Charlestown (Calumet county), August 10, 1885, a daughter of the late William and Kathryn Heisdorf Dhein. She attended her home district school, St. Gregory's Catholic school in St. Nazianz and Sheboygan Business College. Her marriage to Mr. Gerhard took place May 20, 1913, in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Chilton. Following marriage the couple operated the Gerhard home farm about two miles west of St. Nazianz. She was a member of the Christian Mothers Society of St. Gregory's parish. HELEN GERHARD cemetery #21 ST. NAZIANZ 1929 Miss Helen Gerhard, 75 years of age, died at St. Agnes hospital at Fond du Lac Nov. 18 at midnight. The funeral took place on Saturday morning at 9:30 o'clock in St. Gregory's church with interment in adjoining cemetery. Rev. Fintan Holzknecht celebrated a Solemn Requiem mass, assisted by two Salvatorian Fathers. The deceased was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gerhard Sr. She was born in New Yory (sic) City Oct. 31, 1864. When eleven years old she came with her parents to St. Nazianz where she lived in the parental home until her death. She leaves to mourn her, two sisters, Mrs. Louis Baumgartner and Miss Mary Gerhard, both of St. Nazianz; five nephews: Joseph and Alex Gerhard, Anton and Joseph Baumgartner of Mishawaka, Ind.; three nieces: St. M. Antonita of Altoona Pa; Mrs. Steve R. Stiefvater of Valders; and Mrs. Math Meyer of St. Nazianz; and twenty-five grand-nieces and nephews. She was a sister of the Rev. A.J. Gerhard, who died this last January. She spent the last twelve years at her home and with the families of Mrs. Steve Stiefvater, Mrs. Math Meyer, Joseph Gerhard and Joseph Baumgartner and neighbors who needed her helpful assistance. Miss Gerhard was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis and a member of the Young Ladies Sodality and was respected and beloved by all who knew her. She was ill for six months, and the last two months were spent at St. Agnes hospital. She also leaves to mourn her, a number of cousins in New York, Chicago and Sheboygan. (no newspaper named)

WILHELM GERKEN (GERCKEN) cemetery #13 Manitouwoc [old spelling] County Herald Thursday October 6, 1851, Vol. 1 No. 45, 2nd page Column 6, under Local Items The Circuit Court adjourned on Monday. The Grand Jury found a bill of indictment aginst Geo. Egloff and Gustoff Eichoff for the murder of Wilhelm Gercken. As the parties were not ready for trial, Judge Howe appointed a special term for November, when this case will be tried. A horrible and fiendish murder has been committed, but how far the accused are implicated is yet to be determined. Circumstances strongly point to them as perpetrators, but a legal investigation may develope [sic] facts substantiating their innocence, at which none would rejoice more than ourselves.

JULIUS GERL cemetery #43 From Der Nord Westen, 06 Sept. 1894: Death by drowning Sat. of Julius Gerl, who was about 20 yrs. old and the son of Andreas Gerl. He was swimming in the Manitowoc River near the railroad bridge with two companions – Charles Christensen and someone named Tschefs. Young Julius swam across the river and on his way back, suffered cramps and sank before their eyes. They sought to help but the body was not found until later. Burial was Mon. in the Catholic Cemetery.

Born in Kiel, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Gerlach, he married Norma Fluhr of Kiel and had operated a grocery store in Elkhart Lake and at Princeton before moving to Wausau in May. Survivors are his wife and a son, two grandchildren; and his mother, Mrs. Ida Schoedel of West Bend. His father and a brother preceded him in death. Mr. Gerlach was born June 30, 1887, at Red Lake Falls, Minn., son of the late Carl and Christine Franz Kiel. He was educated at Red Lake Falls schools. He married Olga Dragar June 21, 1916, at Red Lake Falls. They moved to Brillion in 1919 and to Kiel in 1934 where he operated a grocery store until 1941. He was then employed by A. A. Laun Furniture Co., Kiel, until his retirement in 1957. Four brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Howard of Clearwater, Fla. and Robert at home: three daughters, Mrs. Joseph Ruehlman of Plymouth, Sheboygan County, Mrs. Richard Carstens of Kaukauna, Outagamie County, and Mrs. Wilfred Schreiber of Waukesha; five brothers, Ernest and Edward of Seattle, Wash., Adolph of New Uim, Minn., Carl of Los Angeles, Calif., and Augusta of Van Nuis, Calif., and seven grandchildren. GERPHEIDE Former Resident of City Dies and Body Brought Here Pneumonia, following enfeebled health for a long time, proved fatal to Mrs. Augusta, widow of the late J. D. Gerpheide, and a former resident of this city, Mrs. Gerpheide's death occurring at Milwaukee Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. G. Frase, 1101 Twenty-eighth street. The body will be brought to this city tomorrow and funeral services will be held from the home of Edward Gerpheide, a son. Mrs. Gerpheide was past 86 years of age and for several years her health had been poor. With her husband she made her home in this city for a long term of years and after the death of Mr. Gerpheide, resided with her daughter who removed to Milwaukee several years ago. She was a native of Germany and a daughter of the late Dr. August Schenk, a pioneer physician of this city. Gerpheide Mourn Death of Little Son Death's sadness prevades the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. O. Gerpheide. Edward, the five year old son of the family having been summoned from earth Monday night after an illness of but short duration. The boy was the youngest of the family and idealized by the parents who will have the sympathy of many friends in their bereavement. The child suffered from diabetes and suffered much. FREDERICKA GERPHEIDE cemetery #44 Manitowoc Herald Times, Manitowoc, Wisconsin, Thursday, April 28, 1960 Gerpheide Mrs. Fredericka Gerpheide, 98, formerly of 1524 Clark St., Manitowoc, died Wednesday at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, where she had resided since early in 1957. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, with the Rev. L. H. Koeninger officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The former Fredericka Schroeder was born in Germany Jan. 19, 1862, daughter of the late Joahim and Marie Jonas Schroeder. She came to the United States in 1871 with her parents who settled at Manitowoc. She was married in 1881 to Otto D. Gerpheide, a cigar maker, who died July 12, 1936. While residing at Holy Family Hospital, following a fall at home when she broke her arm a number of years ago, Mrs. Gerpheide often recalled the site for the hospital sed of her huband's parents. The Gerpheide home was on the land as well as a park and dance hall. Fire destroyed the buildings and the land subsequently was sold to Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity. Surviving Mrs. Gerpheide are a daughter, Mrs. Pat McCauley of Maplewood, N.J., a sister, Mrs. Mathilda Schroeder of Manitowoc, a grandchild and two great grandchildren. A daughter, Mrs. E. W. JOHN D. GERPHEIDE cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 16 July 1891: Death of John D. Gerpheide last Fri. The deceased was known to practically every resident of our city and was appreciated for his civic activities. He was born 18 Oct. 1824 in Gartrop, near Wesel, in the Rhineland. He served his military duty with the 8th Hussar Regiment and after participating in the Bavarian Campaign, emigrated to America in 1849. In 1850 he came to Manitowoc, and 2 yrs. later in 1852 married Henriette Bartells with whom he had 2 sons, Henry and Otto. After the death of his wife, he married again in 1857, this time with Mrs. Auguste Puermann, a daughter of Dr. August Schenk, who brought a child from her first marriage to their family and subsequently they had together 2 more sons and 4 daughters. All of the children, with the exception of Eduard and Auguste, are married. In 1858 Mr. Gerpheide and his family moved to Wheeling, Illinois, but returned in 1860 and have lived in Manitowoc ever since. He owned and operated “Gerpheide’s Garten” and in addition to his work as a tavern keeper, he filled several civic functions. Over the past 8 mos. he suffered from a combination of illnesses, and his death may be considered a release. OTTO D. GERPHEIDE cemetery #44 Manitowoc Herald-Times, Manitowoc, Wisconsin, Monday, July 13, 1936 Otto D. Gerpheide, 81, born in this city in 1855 and one of the early day tobacconists of Manitowoc, died suddenly at his home, 1524 Clark street, Sunday morning. Death was due to a heart attack superinduced by excessive heat. Despite his advanced age Mr. Gerpheide was active about the ---------------? retired life for several years. He suffered a fractured hip 11 years ago in a fall from a step ladder. Funeral Wednesday Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Pfeffer funeral home. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery Mr. Gerpheide was born here in 1855, a son of the late J. D. Gerpheide, who for many years owned the property now the site of the Holy Family hospital and known as Gerpheide's park. Mr. Gerpheide opened a tobacco store in what was formerly the Beers' property on South Eighth street and later moved to Washington street between Ninth and Tenth street. He was a cigar manufacturer and dealer for more than 30 years. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Fredericka Gerpheide, whom he married more than 50 years ago; two daughters, Mrs. E. W. Mackey, city, and Mrs. P. L. McCauley, New Jersey; two brothers, Edward, of Pasadena, Calif., August, South Bend, Ind.; three sisters, Mrs. H. H. Meyer, Minneapolis, Mrs. O. M. Mrs. Gesell was born in Germany 02 Feb. 1828, then came to Two Rivers with her husband over 50 yrs. ago where she has resided ever since. Her husband preceded her in death 12 yrs ago. She is survived by 3 sons and 2 daughters. The funeral was held Tues. from the Lutheran Church in Two Rivers.

JOHN CORNELIUS GESSERT cemetery #82 CALLED BY DEATH John Cornelius Gessert was called to his reward on Monday evening at 7 o’clock at his home in Kiel, after a lingering illness with a complication of diseases. Decedent was born in Liebenheim, Darmstadt, Germany, Dec. 23, 1852. When only one year old he was brought to this country with his parents, who settled in Sheboygan county. On Sept. 16, 1880 he was united in marriage to Thekla Baumann. Eight yeats later the family moved to Kiel, where he has since lived. Mr. Gessert was engineer at the Kiel Wooden Ware Co. for 34 years. Illness compelled him to give up his position in May 1922. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen and the Kiel Fire Department. As a citizen and neighbor he was friendly and obliging and will be missed by a host of associates. He was devoted to his family and worked consistently to advance their interests. He died as he lived, an honest man and true christian. Mr. Gessert is survived by his wife and three children, namely: Mrs. Hugo Lindner, and Mrs. Aug. Kirchner of Milwaukee, and Frederick Gessert of this city; also seven sisters and one brother, Fred. Gessert, Mrs. Margaret Klein, Mrs. Katherine Gerhart, Mrs. Eva Herges, Mrs. Lilly Reichert, Mrs. Anna Best, Mrs. Mathilda Gessert and Mrs. Dihnna Anderson. The funeral will be held this (Thursday) afternoon at 2 p. m. from the home, Rev. W. Rech officiating. Interment will be made in the Kiel cemetery. - 1924

THEKLA GESSERT cemetery #82 End Comes Thursday, August 19, 1931 After Illness of Several Months Following an illness of several months’ duration, Mrs. Thekla Gessert, 70, passed away at her home at 638 St. Paul street at the Seventh Street corner Thursday morning at about nine o’clock. During the past weeks many relatives and friends from near and far had visited with her. Mrs. Gessert, nee Baumann, was born Dec. 29, 1860, at Rockville. On Sept. 16, 1880, she was united in marriage to Cornelius Gessert, at St. Louis, Mo. Here the couple lived for two years, after which they moved to St. Cloud, living there for several years. Leaving St. Cloud, they removed to Plymouth for several years, and came next to Kiel, where they lived for the past 45 years. Mr. Gessert, who was engineer at the Kiel Wooden Ware Co. plant for many years, preceded his wife in death Dec. 1, 1925. Surviving are two children, Mrs. August Kirchner and Mrs. Hugo Lindner of Milwaukee. An only son, Fred, passed away here in September, 1928. Of ten brothers and sisters, eight survive. They are Edward Baumann of this city and Arthur Baumann of St. Cloud; Mrs. Hulda Barkley of St. Louis, Mo.; Mrs. William Obigt of Sheboygan; Mrs. Augusta Krembs and Mrs. Clara Messing of St. Paul, Minn.; Mrs. Jacob Stumpf of this city; and Mrs. Christian Iserloth of St. Cloud. One sister, Mrs. Minnie Rinnow, Racine, and a brother Ernest, Baumann of this city preceded her in death. Seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. from the home, with services at the St. Peter Reformed church at 2:30 o’clock. Interment was in the Kiel cemetery in the family lot. The Rev. E.L. Worthman performed the last rites. Pall bearers were the following six nephews: William Baumann, Hilton Baumann, Carl Stumpf, Rosmus Iserloth, William Gessert, and Edgar Herges. The floral offerings were many and beautiful.
