COL. CASPER FLEISCHER cemetery 89A Manitowoc Co. Chronicle, June 25, 1872 Death of Col. Caspar Fleischer. Col. Caspar Fleischer is no more. Although since February last he had been confined to his room, most of the time on a bed of sickness, and we some of us were afraid that it would prove his last, when on Tuesday evening the 18th of June, we heard he had ceased to live, the whole community was cast into gloom. For twenty-one years, nearly a quarter of a century, he had been one of the landmarks of this little hamlet. Of a fine noble presence, with a hand as "open to charity as the day," a spirit of enterprise that has left behind him many monuments in the adornment and substantial improvement of the place, a genial sociability that made friends of all, no one could have been called who would be more sadly missed or sincerely mourned. Even his faults - who has them not? - were such as sometimes grow out of true nobility of character and a purely unselfish nature. His virtues were many, and will be gratefully treasured in the remembrance of his friends here and in the Fatherland.

OTTO C. FRANKE cemetery #13 From Der Nord Westen, 22 July 1909: Death in Wabasha, Minnesota, last week of Otto Franke from typhoid fever, with burial in St. Wendel cemetery, Town Centerville, on 15 July. AUGUSTA FRANSWAY cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 02 July 1903: Death from a stroke on Thurs. last week of Mrs. Frank Fransway, a former resident of our city, in Pikeshill, N.Y., where she was visiting. The deceased, (nee Auguste Rosinsky), was born in Manitowoc 35 yrs. ago but has been living for several years in Oshkosh. She is survived by her husband and 2 children and here in Manitowoc by her sorrowing father and a brother. The body was brought here and committed to the ground on Sunday. (Note: Since the ages don't match, I called the cemetery office and here is what she said: "The entry you have from the tombstone is on the same lot as the entry I have, so I have to assume they are the same person and that the tombstone is incorrect, since she probably didn't die the year after she was buried. The original burial register from 1903 says she is age 54 and that she died of apoplexy. There is no other information. She is buried on the same lot as Francis Fransway (1845-1910). I am going to assume that she was born sometime between 1849 (based on age) and 1852 (marker date), which would make sense since she would be a few years younger than Francis. The obituary sounds like it could be her, except for the age, so I am thinking there is a typo, maybe they transposed the age (35 instead of 53) or it should have been 55 instead of 35. I just looked in the Lot Diagram book for and I see that the lot was originally purchased by William Rosinsky and was paid for 6/3/1903. So now I definitely think it's her and there is just a typo in the obit."

JOHN FRANZ cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 01 Oct. 1903: (Saturday dateline) What has been long expected occurred yesterday with the death of John Franz whom we had reported as having suffered a stroke several weeks ago. One had hoped that Mr. Franz would overcome the illness and be returned to his former health, but that hope went unfulfilled as he grew weaker and weaker until his death yesterday (Friday). John Franz was one of the best known and eminent residents of our county. He was born 15 Nov. 1832 in Hockelheim, Kreis Wetzlar, and after his marriage came to America in 1856, arriving in this county on 02 July, and settled in Two Rivers. There he was employed in one of the several factories until 1864 when he lost an arm in an accident and had to give up his position. In 1865 the residents of Two Rivers elected Mr. Franz to the office of Village Treasurer, a position he filled for several years. In 1868 he was elected Registrar and moved to Manitowoc where he lived ever since. He filled that office until 1878 when he and his son established a land and loan office under the name Franz, Schmitz & Co. where he worked until his illness. Mr. Franz, who belonged to the Order of Odd Fellows and to the United Old Workers, is survived by his widow as well as 3 daughters -Mrs. Fritz Beeker, Mrs. A.J. Schmitz, and Mrs. Dr. W.G. Kemper, as well as numerous grandchildren. The above mentioned son died 8 yrs. ago. The funeral will be held Mon. afternoon at 2 p.m. from the funeral home at 917 Jay Street. ********** From Der Nord Westen, 08 Oct. 1903: The funeral of John Franz, whose passing we reported in our Sat. edition, was attended by an extraordinarily large number of mourners, a testimonial to the esteem which the deceased enjoyed in our city. Pastor Gray delivered the funeral oration. The German Odd Fellows Lodge and the vocal groups "Freier Sängerbund" and "Concordia" gave last honors to their departed brother. The rites of the Odd Fellow's Order were observed at graveside and the singing groups delivered a dirge. Among the immediate family members attending the funeral was Mrs. John Mehl of Milwaukee, the deceased's only sister. Mr. Mehl is in Germany at this time and could not attend. We wish to add to our biography of the deceased; he had also served for many years as a member of the Democratic Congressional District Committees and of the State Central Committees. ************ John Franz/d. 2 Oct. 1903/age 7/cause: paralysis/from record of St. James Epis. ch., Manitowoc (typo on age?)
JOHN FRANZ JR. cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 19 Mar. 1896: Unanticipated sudden death early Sat. morning of John Franz, Jr., the only son of our prominent citizen, Mr. John Franz. The deceased had been ill for 4 weeks with rheumatic fever and although it is painful, it is seldom fatal. On the evening before his death he was feeling so well that it was hoped he would be fully recovered in a few days. During the night he was restless and about 10 o’clock, Dr. Kemper was called. After Dr. Kemper arrived, the young man’s temperature registered 107, then increased to 107-1/2, 108, and finally at 108-1/2 degrees. The doctor summoned the family in anticipation of death, which occurred at 2 a.m. John Franz, Jr. was born in Two Rivers 25 Aug. 1861 and came to Manitowoc when his father moved here following his election. After leaving school, he studied leather crafting with Mr. H. Schmiedecke here in Manitowoc, for whom he worked 4 yrs. He then went to Minnesota and worked for a year before returning here and working in the real estate and insurance business that his father had established. The deceased was married to a daughter of Mr. Frank Zeman, a marriage that produced 2 children – ages 7 and 9. He is also survived by three married sisters. The funeral took place Tues. afternoon with a long funeral procession.
RICHARD C. FRANZ, Sr. cemetery #33 Richard C. (Dick) Franz Sr., age 69, of Manitowoc, entered into eternal rest Wednesday morning, Dec. 25, 2002 at his residence following a lengthy illness. He was born Aug. 27, 1933 in Manitowoc County, son of the late Emil H. and Louise (Kiel) Franz. Dick married (his wife) at Rockwood Evangelical Lutheran Church on Oct. 8, 1955. The couple made their home in the Mishicot area for many years, moving to Manitowoc in 1995. Dick was educated at Shoto School District No. 4 of the town of Two Rivers, Mishicot High School, the University of Wisconsin Short Course, Manitowoc Teacher's College, Silver Lake College and was a graduate of UW-Oshkosh, with a degree in elementary education and a minor in art. He taught at the Shoto School and later Pleasant View School until consolidation closed the one-room schools. He then taught at the Central School in Mishicot for one year. Following this, he gave up teaching to go into business for himself, starting in the upholstery trade. Tendonitis forced him to give up upholstery and continue his business career in woodworking, retiring in 1995. Also during the years he was in business, he spent 17 years as a janitor at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mishicot. He also drove buses for the Mishicot schools for several years. Devoting most of his life to conservation activities and efforts, Dick has done his part in making the earth a better place, planting trees and helping to preserve wildlife. In 1960, he purchased a run-down 100-acre farm where he remodeled the house, built a new barn, planted 72,500 trees and placed 40 acres under the old Forest Crop Law for 50 years. The rest of the land was used for Christmas trees, a pond for wildlife and fish and wildlife plants and cover. The Mishicot Sportsman's Club built pheasant pens for 600 birds on Dick's land and raised them for 10 years. He convinced more than 87 farmers to permit planting of the birds. It was during these same years that the club bought and developed what is now known as the Mishicot Sportsman's Park on Jambo Creek. Dick was involved in the development of the park and spent hundreds of unrecorded hours working on the club grounds and forest, as well as many hours with state, county and town officials to help with the growth of the club and the grounds. He promoted fund-raisers for the club to help in construction of the building on the grounds. He also designed the first bridge at Jambo Creek and assisted with the establishment of a wildlife pond with an island in the middle and a wood duck house on it in this area. Dick loved to cook at special events and some of the meetings. He made special grills from hot water heaters and cattle watering tanks to handle the large amounts of chicken and corn grilled. Dick became a lifetime member of the Mishicot Club around 1975. Dick was secretary of the Manitowoc County Fish and Game Protective Association during 1963-1964. Other sportsmen's clubs he was involved with over the years were Shoto Conservation Club, Westshore Sportsmen's Club, Larrabee Sportsmen's Club, Kelly Lake Sportsmen's Club, Klondike Sportsmen's Club and Pine River Sportsmen's Club. Dick was also a member of the Wisconsin Sportsmen, North American Hunting Club, National Rifle Association, Friends of the NRA Manitowoc County, Wisconsin Woodland Owner's Association, Manitowoc Fish and Game Protective Association and Conservation Education. He sold hunting and fishing licenses in the Mishicot area from his home for 10 years. Dick served on the Mishicot Village Board for one term and was village treasurer for one term. He belonged to the Mishicot and Francis Creek Lions clubs for a total of 20 years and also was a member of the Mishicot Fire Department for some years. Dick was involved in 4-H for about 16 years and was on the original planning committee for Camp TaPaWingo, spending many hours searching for land before the present site was chosen. Here is where he first tapped maple trees, learning to make syrup and learning that the tapping does not permanently injure the trees. Making maple syrup was a hobby he pursued for many years, using his property in Oconto County to tap his trees. He also deer hunted in the area, a sport that he loved. One of Dick's greatest memories was always the more than 366,000 trees he planted in his lifetime, in Manitowoc, Kewaunee, Oconto and Langlade counties. Most of the trees were planted in Manitowoc County through Wisconsin and the Manitowoc County Soil Conservation Service Office with the direction of Keith Henley, state forester during the 1960s. Due to ill health, most of Dick's efforts in recent years were limited to donations to worthy organizations, many of which are conservation or community related. Dick received a Special Achievement Award by the Manitowoc County Conservationists in 1997 and was enshrined into the Manitowoc County Conservationists Hall of Fame in 2002. He is survived by his wife; his eight children; 19 grandchildren and several step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters; two sisters-in-law. Survived also by nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents: Emil and Louise Franz; a brother: Donald; a sister: Dorothy Spalding; a sister-in-law: Dorothy (Kuhl) Franz; three brothers-in-law: Herbert Spalding, George Fenske and Robert Wordell. Memorials may be made to First German Lutheran Church, Mishicot Sportsmen's Club or the charity of the donor's choice. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 30, 2002 at First German Lutheran Church, 1033 S. Eighth St., Manitowoc. Family and friends will be greeted from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002 at Jens Family Funeral Home and at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. The Jens Family Funeral Home, 1122 S. Eighth St., Manitowoc, is assisting the family with arrangements. His favorite poem was included by his wife: What God Hath Promised God hath not promised skies always blue, Flower-strewn pathways all our lives through, God hath not promised sun without rain, Joy without sorrow, peace without pain, God hath not promised we shall not know Toil and temptation, trouble and woe. He hath not told us we shall not bear Many a burden, many a care. But God hath promised strength for the day, Rest for the laborer, light for the way Grace for the trials, help from above, Unfailing sympathy, undying love.
