ERVIN H. ELFNER cemetery #43 Ervin H. Elfner, 46, of Rt. 1, Manitowoc, died Saturday evening at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. He had been ill since July 30. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, and at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Silver Lake. The Rev. Ronald Kirk O. Pream, will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc. Ervin Elfner was born Aug. 20, 1922, at Manitowoc, son of Edward J. Elfner Sr. and the late Julia Bellin Elfner. A lifelong resident of Manitowoc County, he graduated with the class of 1940 from Lincoln High School, Manitowoc. He married Dorothy Wimmer Feb. 12, 1944, at Manitowoc. He was a World War II veteran, serving as a technician four with the Headquarters COmpany of the 711th Tank Battalion in the Philippine and Asiatic theatres. Elfner was a sergeant with the Manitowoc County Traffic Patrol and was also an instructor for the Red Cross. The patrolman was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 706, the Wisconsin Traffic Officers Assn. and was serving as the assessor for the Town of Manitowoc Rapids at the time of his death. Besides his wife he is survived by a son, a daughter, his father and step-mother, four brothers, and a sister. SYLVIA A. ELFNER cemetery #89C Sylvia A. Elfner, age 87, of Hamilton Memorial Home, Two Rivers, died Saturday evening, August 10, 1996, at the Home. Funeral Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 13, 1996, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Two Rivers. Rev. David Arndt will officiate at the service with burial to follow at Forest View Cemetery, Two Rivers. Sylvia was born August 31, 1908, in Two Rivers, daughter of the late Adam and Alvina Jens Klein. She married Hugo Elfner who preceded her in death on October 14, 1979. Sylvia was a lifelong resident of Two Rivers and a member of St. John Ev. Lutheran Church. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. She was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers. Friends may call at Klein and Stangel Funeral Home this Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. and Tuesday at St. John Ev. LOUIS ELLER cemetery #89A From Der Nord Westen, 01 Feb. 1900: Death in Chicago, where he was seeking medical help, of Louis Eller of Mishicott, on Mon. The body of the 27-yr. old man was brought to Mishicott for burial. The deceased leaves his mother, 3 brothers and 3 sisters.
ROSALINE ELLER cemetery #82 From Der Nord Westen, 23 Feb. 1899: Death Fri. in Kiel of 74-yr. old Mrs. CARL ELLER. Her death is attributed directly to the severe cold weather of the last week. She and her husband were found in bed one morning half dead from the cold. Their age and circumstances left them without means to deal with the terrible cold weather. In addition to her husband, the deceased leaves a daughter living in Chicago and a son in Milwaukee who practices law.
CAROLINE ELLERMANN cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 02 Apr. 1903: Death yesterday morning of Mrs. Caroline Ellermann, a long time resident of our city. Mrs. Ellermann was born in Germany 31 Aug. 1825 and came to Manitowoc in 1867. She is survived by her husband and 7 children. The body was taken to Branch, where the family had lived for many years, and buried there Sunday. (Note: obit says she was buried in Branch, but her tombstone is in Evergreen in Manitowoc)
FRED ELLERMANN cemetery #45 From Der Nord Westen, 05 Aug. 1897: Death Thurs. last week of Friedrich Ellermann who lived near Branch. Two days before his death, as he was returning home from Manitowoc, he was thrown from his wagon and injured his back. Mr. Ellermann, who was 45, leaves a widow and 10 children, of whom the youngest is 2 yrs. old. The burial took place Saturday. FRIEDRICH ELLERMANN cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 17 Mar. 1904: Fred Ellermann, a resident on the south side of our city, died Fri. of old age debility. He was born 81 yrs. ago in Ottenstein, Prov. Hanover, and came to Manitowoc in 1866 where he has lived ever since. He leaves 7 children. The deceased, who was born in Milwaukee, reached the age of 31. She is survived by her husband and one child. The funeral will take place Sun. afternoon at 2 p.m. from the Reformed Church.

WILLIAM C. ELLIG cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 07 Aug. 1902: Death Mon. morning, following an illness of several weeks, of William C. Ellig. The deceased, who was born 19 Mar. 1869 in Columbia, Texas, came to Manitowoc in 1876 with his parents and has lived here since. He was employed by the Manitowoc Seeding Co. for 12 yrs. He is survived by his widowed mother, 3 brothers and a sister. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon.
FRED ELMENDORF cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 31 July 1902: Death in the local mental facility on Thurs. of 46-yr. old Friedrich Elmendorf. The deceased was formerly a watchmaker in our city but lost his mind in 1882 and has been a patient in the mental facility since 1885. His body was brought to the residence of his mother here and from there taken to burial on Saturday.

Funeral services will be 10:45 a.m. Thursday, June 6, at Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, and 11:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, Two Rivers. Rev. She was born May 13, 1942, in the town of Stevenson, Marinette County, Wis., daughter of the late Aliphia and Ersel Olsen Van. Edith was a member of the Singles Club of Two Rivers and Eagles Auxiliary Aeries No. 706. Survivors include a son, three daughters and two sons- in-law, six brothers and four sisters-in-law, six sisters and five brothers-in-law, seven grandchildren, nieces; nephews; other relatives; and special friend. She was preceded in death by two infant brothers, Roger and Ronnie. Friends may call at Pfeffer Funeral Home, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday. There will be a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday by Rev. Emond, 74, of 2114 Jackson St., Two Rivers, died Wednesday night at Two Rivers Municipal Hospital. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Deja and Martin Funeral Chapels and at 10 a.m. at St. Luke Catholic Church, Two Rivers. Rev. Robert Rhyner will officiate and burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Two Rivers. Mr. Emond was born April 16, 1899, at Niagara, Wis., son of the late George and Ida Ruelle Emond. He came to Two Rivers as a young man and was employed at Mirro Aluminum Co. until his retirement. Active in Two Rivers baseball circles in the early 1920s, he was a catcher on one of the first Mirro teams. He married Lucille Kotarek Nov. 23, 1921. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, two sons, a sister, Mrs. Sylvester Schmitt, of Two Rivers; two brothers, Everett, of Two Rivers and Kenneth, of Villanova, Pa.; 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Nov. 10, 1987 Clarence Emond, 67, Mishicot, died early Tuesday morning, November 10, 1987, at Holy Family Medical Center, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Mishicot, the Rev. David Waege will officiate and entombment will be in Knollwood Mausoleum. Mr. Emond was born May 14, 1920, at Two Rivers, son of the late Luke and Hilda Bernhardt Emond. He was employed at Schaus Hardware until 1965 and then employed with Curtis Mathis of Manitowoc working as a TV repairman, retiring in 1982. Mr. Emond was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and member and past president of Manitowoc Camera Club. Survivors include his wife; two brothers and sisters-in-law; nephews and friends. Emond, 54, of 2320 Forest Ave., Two Rivers, died unexpectedly Thursday morning at home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Klein and Stangel, Inc. Funeral Home, Two Rivers, and at 11:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. James Stamborski will officiate and burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Mr. Emond was born Aug. 26, 1915 at Two Rivers, a son of the late George and Ida Ruelle Emond. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married the former Esther Zik May 29, 1937, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Two Rivers, and was employed at the Hamilton Mfg. Co. He was a member of Eleven Gold Star Post 1248, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Hamilton Goodfellowship club and the Hamilton 30-year club. Survivors include his wife, two sons, a sister, Mrs. Sylvester Schmitt of Rt. 2, Two Rivers; three brothers, Everett and Aaron of Two Rivers and Kenneth of Philadelphia and two grandchildren. She was born January 14, 1926, in Manitowoc, daughter of the late Walter and Blanche Dufeck Luchsinger Sr. She married Ralph C. Emond on December 10, 1945, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Manitowoc. He preceded her in death July 14, 1985. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law; two brothers and one sister-in-law; two sisters and a brother-in-law; four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:15 a.m. Friday, August 4, 1995, at Klein and Stangel Funeral Home and 11:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Officiating at the Mass of Christian burial will be Rev. Donald Marquardt and burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Two Rivers. She was born February 10, 1918, in Two Creeks, daughter of the late Joseph and Catherine Mella Zik. On May 29, 1937, Esther married David A. Emond, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He preceded her in death on January 1, 1970. She was employed at Hamilton Manufacturing for many years until her retirement. Esther was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law; one sister; three brothers and three sisters-in-law; four grandchildren; one great granddaughter; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. He married the former Elsie Cerkas on October 9, 1935, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Mr. Emond is a retired supervisor from Mirro Corporation. Mr. Emond was a member of the Men of Holy Redeemer. Survivors include his wife, Elsie; three sons and daughters-in-law, a daughter and son-in-law, a brother, Kenneth Emond of Brownsville, Texas; a sister, Mrs. Gen Schmitt of Two Rivers and 11 grandchildren. September 21, 1942 Residence Here Since 1914 Ill a Month; Funeral Tuesday Morning George Emond, 76, 1722 18th St., an employee of the Hamilton Manufacturing Company since coming to this city in 1914, died at the Municipal hospital Saturday afternoon where he had been a patient for nearly a month. Rites Tomorrow Funeral services will be held from the Klein and Stangel funeral home at 8:30 Tuesday morning and at 9 o'clock from the St. Luke's Catholic Church, where a requiem high mass will be read. Rev. Arthur F. Allie will be the celebrant. The Revs. Linus Steckbauer and Alfred Loehr will assist. George Emond, well known in this city, was born in Fraserville, Quebec, Canada, on June 8, 1866, the son of the late Esueb and Justine Emond. He came to this country at the age of 21 and made his home at Lena, Oconto County. On June 8, 1891 he married Ida Ruelle of Lena at Stiles. She died in March, 1926. Leaves Seven Children Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Alfred O. Allie and Mrs. Sylvester Schmitt, this city; five sons, Luke, Aaron, Everett, and David, of this city, and PFC. Kenneth, now in England. Several brothers and sisters, residing in Canada also survive, along with 30 grandchildren and one great grandchild. The rosary will be recited at the funeral home at 7:45 this evening. (Note: an obituary appeared in the same paper but was a repeat of the above) Grandsons Serve As Pallbearers Six grandsons acted as pallbearers for George Emond when funeral services were held for the well known local man this morning. Services were held from the Klein and Stangel, Inc. funeral home at 8:30 and at 9 o'clock a solemn requiem high mass was celebrated in St. Luke's Catholic church by Rev. Arthur F. Allie, Rev. Linus Steckbauer and Rev. Alfred Loehr. Father Allie is a brother-in-law of one of Mr. Emond's daughters, Mrs. Alfred O. Allie. The pallbearers were Ralph, Harold and Mark Emond, Richard and Donald Allie and Philip Schmitt.

St., Two Rivers, died at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Two Rivers Municipal Hospital, where she had been a patient since Saturday. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Klein & Stangel, Inc., Funeral Home and at 2 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, Two Rivers, the Rev. W.G. Haase officiating. Internment will be in Pioneers' Rest Cemetery, Two Rivers. Mrs. Emond, nee Hilda Bernhardt was born in Two Rivers on Jan. 8, 1900, a daughter of the late Albert and Mrs. Sophie Mandel Bernhardt. She was married on June 22, 1919 to Luke Emond. Besides her husband and mother, she leaves four sons, two brothers, Harry of Flint, Mich., and George Bernhardt of the Town of Two Rivers, and two grandchildren. For many years Mrs. Emond was a member of the Dorcas Society and Study Club of St. John's Church. Members of both groups will attend the funeral in a body. Mar. 19, 1926 Mrs. Ida Emond, wife of George Emond, passed away at the family home at 1722 Eighteenth street Saturday morning. Deceased was Ida Ruelle, born at Mishicot April 7, 1876. She was married in 1891 and for some years the family made its home at Niagara, coming to Two Rivers in 1915. Surviving are the husband, nine children and seven grandchildren. The children are Mrs. Alfred Allie, Genevieve, Catherine, Aaron, Luke, Victor, Everett, David and Kenneth, all of this city. Her mother, Mrs. Emily Ruelle, five brothers, Alex Ruelle of this city, Monroe and Levi of Kenosha and Louis and Wilfred of Niagara and two sisters, Mrs. George LaPlant of Niagara and Mrs. Thrifle Belland of Denholan, Saskatchewan, Canada also survive her. The funeral was held Tuesday morning with services at St. Luke's Catholic church, Rev. C.V. Hugo officiating. Burial was at Holy Cross cemetery.
LUKE EMOND Cemetery 89A From the Herald Times Reporter, Mon. Aug. 23, 1965, Two Rivers, WI EMOND Luke D. Emond, 68, of 2312 Roosevelt Ave., Two Rivers, a retired Mirro Aluminum Co. Plant No. 1 employee, died early Monday morning at the Two Rivers Municipal Hospital where he had been a patient a week. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Klein & Stangel Inc., Funeral Home and at 2 p.m. at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Two Rivers, the Rev. T.F. Stern officiating. Burial will be in Pioneers' Rest Cemetery. Mr. Emond was born April 9, 1897, at Lena, Wis., son of the late George and Ida Ruelle Emond. When he was a child the family brought him to Niagara, Wis., and during World War 1 the family moved to Two Rivers. He was an employee of the Mirro firm since his residence at Two Rivers and retired in 1962. He was a member of the 25 - Year Club of the Mirro company. He married the former Hilda Bernhardt at Two Rivers June 22, 1919. She preceded him in death 10 years ago. Surviving are four sons, a sister, Mrs. Sylvester Schmitt, of Rt. 2, Two Rivers; four brothers, Aaron, David, and Everett, of Two Rivers and Kenneth, of Philadelphia, Pa., and eight grandchildren. Emond, age 90, a resident of the Hamilton Memorial Home, Two Rivers, died Wednesday evening, April 14, 1993, at the home. Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, April 16, 1993, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Two Rivers. The Rev. Paul Schumacher will officiate at the Memorial Mass of Christian Burial with the burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Two Rivers. She was born May 18, 1902, at Ashland, Wis., daughter of the late Joseph and Magdalene Markewicz Kulbacki. She married Victor A. Emond September 24, 1924, at St. Luke's Catholic Church, Two Rivers. He preceded her in death November 16, 1937. She was employed at the Carron Net Company for many years. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law; four daughters and three sons-in-law; 27 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother. The family will greet friends and relatives from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. on Friday at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Klein and Stangel Funeral Home, Two Rivers assisted the family with arrangements.VICTOR EMOND Cemetery 89D (the following was sent in by a family researcher/see contributors page) Victor Alexandra Emond, b.14 Dec 1900, d.16 Nov 1937 son of George and Ida (Ruelle) Emond From the Two Rivers Reporter, November 16, 1937 Victor Emond Dies as Result of Unusual Plant Accident A razor sharp scraping tool which slipped from the grasp of Victor Emond, 36, 1722 - 18th street, father of seven small children, shortly before noon today penetrated his abdomen, severing a leg artery to cause his death at 1:30 this afternoon. Occurred Near Noon The accident occurred in the machine shop of Plant No. 4 of the Aluminum Goods Manufacturing company here about 11:45 this morning and death was caused by loss of blood. Witnesses told Herman C. Wentorf, manager of the two plants here, that Mr. Emond, a well known machinist, was holding the tool with a sharp edge toward the left side of his abdomen and that his other hand touched the tool and forced it into his side. Daniel Sibenhorn was working along side Mr. Emond when the accident occurred. The victim of this unusual accident was rushed to the first aid room in the plant and medical aid summoned. He was later taken to the Two Rivers Municipal hospital in the Beduhn ambulance but the loss of blood had proved fatal. An internal hemorrhage was caused and physicians told the family that, had he recovered, he would have lost the leg. Born at Niagara The body was taken to the Beduhn Funeral Home, but funeral arrangements have not yet been completed. Victor Emond was born in Niagara, Wis., on December 14, 1900 and came to this city in 1914. He became an employee of the Aluminum Goods company shortly after moving here and was employed there ever since. In September 1924 he married Miss Sophia Kulbacki of Ashland, who with seven children, survives. Mr. Endress was born 07 Nov. 1823 in Wittenberg and came to America in 1854. He settled in Two Rivers where he operated a large commercial fishery. He moved to Manitowoc in 1888 where he lived ever since. He lost his wife only a few months ago. He is survived by 3 sons and a daughter. His funeral took place yesterday under the direction of the local Sons of Hermann Lodge.

Endress, as she was sitting in her rocker awaiting the return of her husband who had gone to summon medical help. The deceased was born in Friedensstadt, Würtemberg, on 20 Feb. 1827 and came to America with her husband in 1854. The family lived many years in Two Rivers where Mr. Endress engaged in the fish business, but moved to Manitowoc in 1888. In addition to her husband she is survived by 5 children. Endries, age 51, of Kiel, died Saturday, April 15, 2006, peacefully surrounded by family and friends at the Manitowoc County Health Care Center after a courageous battle with brain cancer. She was born Jan. 29, 1955, in Manitowoc, daughter of Elaine (Popp) Behnke and the late Leonhardt Behnke Sr. Beverly was a graduate of Reedsville High School, class of 1973. On Sept. 24, 1977, she married David G. Endries at St. John-St. James Lutheran Church, Reedsville. Beverly was a dedicated employee for 32 years at Miller, St. Nazianz. She was also in partnership with her husband at Endries Trucking & Excavating. Bev was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church and the church choir of Louis Corners. Julianne was born Jan. 9, 1926, in Kiel, daughter of the late Peter and Angeline (Herr) Rollmann. She graduated from Kiel High School with the class of 1945. On May 5, 1951, Julianne married Alois G. Endries at St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Kiel. She was employed at Tecumseh of New Holstein for 20 years retiring in 1988. Julianne and her husband, Alois, owned and operated Endries Trucking and Excavating. She was a member of St. Gregory's Catholic Church, St. Nazianz, and a former member of the St. Gregory's Christian Mother's Society. (Survivors omitted for privacy) She was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law: Robert Schmitz. ROSE ENDRIES cemetery #21 St. Nazianz The death of Mrs. John Endries, 26, occurred at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Burkard Saturday. Mrs. Endries had been ill for some time. The deceased was born in January of the year 1902. She was married June 5, 1923, and since then three children were born to them, the (torn part) which died in infancy a (torn part) months ago. The surviving sons are three and four years old respectively. Five brothers, Peter and Frank of Montana, Anton of Sheboygan, George of Manitowoc, and Louis of here survive. Three sisters also mourn here: Mrs. Nic. Schnettler of New Holstein; Mrs. Herbert Neumeier of this village, and Miss Anna at home. Funeral services were held Monday, the Rev. Fintan Holzknecht performing the last rites. Interement(sic) was in the church cemetery. The Christian Mothers society, of which she was a member, attended the rites. JOHN ENGEL cemetery #82 John Engel Ends Life By Hanging John Engel, a resident of Kiel for many years, committed suicide at Manitowoc Monday night, by hanging himself in a barn in the rear of the Schindler hotel in that city, where he had been staying since Friday. He had been despondent for some time, and it is thought that he contemplated the act for several days. Mr. Engel was born on June 28, 1890(tombstone says 1870), on a farm in the town of New Holstein, where he grew to manhood. He was married to Dorothy Arnold in 1899, and the couple have made their home in Kiel ever since. Mr. Engel at first worked at the Kiel Roller Mills, later entering into the livery stable business. He was an employee of the Kiel Woodenware Co. for many years, and since December, 1925, worked at the plant of the Kiel Furniture Co. He gave up his position there April 16 of this year. Besides his widow he leaves one daughter, Mrs. A. J. Brill, and one son, Edgar Engel of this city, who is traveling in the west, one grandchild, his aged mother at New Holstein, three brothers and three sisters. One son died at the age of 2-1/2 years. He was a member of Kiel Camp, Modern Woodmen, and the E. F. U., who will attend the funeral, which will take place this, Thursday afternoon at 1:30, from the Meiselwitz funeral home. The funeral took place Tues. afternoon. note: I contacted the cem. office to see if she could verify this one and here's the reply: The burial register has Herbert Engelbrecht, age 5 weeks (so I'm not sure where age 1 yr came from), son of Ferd. & Bertha Engelbrecht, born in Manitowoc, cause of death: cramps. He is buried on a lot purchased by Ferdinand Engelbrecht, which was paid 4/21/1890 (one day after Herbert's death). There is, however, one other child buried on the same space, which I have absolutely no info for (no dates, nothing).

Elmer C. Erdmann, age 103, a resident of Shady Lane Nursing Care Center, Manitowoc, and formerly of 1401 S. Ninth St., Manitowoc, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005, at Shady Lane. Elmer was born on Aug. 3, 1902, in Manitowoc, to the late Albert and Wilhelmina Boldt Erdmann. He married Agnes Kolbeck on July 3, 1923, in Manitowoc. Elmer was employed at the old Capitol Theatre from 1921 to 1932. He was the oldest living member of the original Capitol Theatre staff. When the Capitol Theatre reopened as the Capitol Civic Center, Elmer was given the honor of cutting the ribbon. Elmer was employed at the Manitowoc Public Utilities for 30 years, retiring in 1967. Survivors include four children, 21 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 28 great-great-grandchildren; also other relatives and friends surviving. Elmer was preceded in death by his wife: Agnes; his parents; a son: Richard; three sisters; two brothers; and a grandson. The family will greet relatives and friends at St. Francis of Assisi - Grand Avenue Site, Manitowoc, on Monday, Dec. 26, 2005, from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass at 11 a.m. The Rev. He was the son of local businessman Henry Esch in whose firm he was employed. He recently married Miss Clara Walters of Sheboygan, who last month delivered their first child, a boy. SYLVAN ESCHER cemetery #83 Relatives and friends here were shocked on Sunday, when they learned of the death of Sylvin(sic) Escher, 22-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Escher, at their farm home in the town of New Holstein. Death occurred at 8:30 p. m. that evening after a brief illness. The deceased was born in the town of New Holstein on February 7, 1914, the son of Joseph and Mary Escher. He attended the parochial school here, and recently was employed at the A. A. Laun Furniture Company plant. Survivors are his parents, and two brothers, Elmer of the town of New Holstein, and Melvin at home. Funeral services were held (today) Thursday from the home at 9 o’clock, and at the Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic church at 9:30 a. m. The Rev. J. J. Esdepsky officiated, and burial was made in the church cemetery near here. - September 17, 1936

JUSTINE WILHELMINE ESSLING cemetery #82 (Wilhelmine on tombstone) CALLED BY DEATH. Mrs. Justine Wilhelmine Essling passed away at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Zerler, where she had been making her home for many years, Tuesday night after a lingering illness. Death was due to dropsy, which set in after she had suffered a number of years with an open leg. The deceased, nee Bunge, was born in Melzow, Ukermark, Germany, April 9, 1838. She came to America in 1882, settling in Kiel, and was united in marriage here to Christian Essling, the couple making their home in the village. Eight children were born to them, of whom three daughters are living. Her husband died 14 years ago. Besides her three daughters, she leaves 12 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren; also one brother, Chr. Bunge of Schleswig. The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon from the home, with services at St. Peters Reformed church, Rev. Wm. Rech officiating. Interment in the Kiel cemetery. - 1920
CHARLES ESSLINGER cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 28 June 1900: Death of Charles S. Esslinger on Fri. evening. He was born 01 Nov. 1809 in Amorbach, Bavaria, and after graduation from the Gymnasium learned to be a watchmaker. He came to America in 1837, worked a year in a New York store then moved to Buffalo. While in New York he married Sophie Schlick on 26 July 1838. She preceded him in death two years ago. In Buffalo he began working as a watchmaker but soon became involved in politics and in 1844 founded the “Buffalo Demokrat”. In 1850 he and his family joined the western migration and came to Manitowoc on 20 May 1850 and resided here ever since. When here he joined the Republican Party as it was being organized in recognition of which President Lincoln named him Postmaster of Manitowoc, a position he faithfully administered for 24 years. He re-entered private life in 1885 when Grover Cleveland’s administration began. (Long article about his party activities) During the last few years Mr. Esslinger was seen less and less often by his friends as old age overtook him. He is survived by one son, 4 daughters, and countless grandchildren. His funeral was held Mon. afternoon at the city cemetery with an enormous number of mourners.

Armin F. Ewald, age 84, of Manitowoc, died Saturday morning, January 6, 2001, at his residence. Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m on Tuesday, January 9, 2001, at St. John Ev. Lutheran Church, Newtonburg. The Rev. Victor Headrick and Rev. Herbert Kruschel will officiate, entombment will follow at Knollwood Mausoleum, town of Kossuth. Armin was born January 16, 1916, in the township of Manitowoc Rapids, Manitowoc County, son of the late Adolph and Elizabeth Schramm Ewald. He grew up and was educated in the township of Manitowoc Rapids. Armin was married to Lorraine M. Matthias, June 13, 1942, at Trinity Lutheran Church, township of Liberty. Armin was a dairy farmer in the township of Manitowoc Rapids all of his life retiring in 1976, and in semi retirement he worked for the Lakeshore Technical College, as a Agricultural Technical instructor until 1981. He was a life long member of St. John Ev. Lutheran Church, Newtonburg, a member of the church choir for many years, he was a life time member of the Manitowoc Farm Bureau, a former director of the Lakeshore Farm Management Association, and a Charter member of the Lake to Lake Dairy Cooperative. Armin enjoyed reading, gardening, bowling, playing cards and traveling. Survivors include his wife, Lorraine; his children, eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren, one sister. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers-in-law, Lester Schultz, Bob Lorfeld, Arland Matthias and a sister-in-law, Irene Matthias. Relatives and friends may call at St. Johns Ev. Lutheran Church, 7531 English Lake Rd., Manitowoc, from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, and Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. Memorials would be appreciated for St. Johns Ev. CHRISTIAN EWALD cemetery #70 From Der Nord Westen, 27 Aug. 1891: After a long illness, Mr. Christian Ewald died Mon. morning of dropsy. For the last 9 mos. Mr. Ewald has been in a sickbed enduring considerable pain. Despite the care of Drs. Simon and Luhmann, hope dwindled for the old man in his 86th yr. The funeral took place on Wed. at the Lutheran Cemetery in Newton and Pastor Pieper of the Lutheran Church delivered the funeral oration. KATHARINA EWEN cemetery #38 From Der Nord Westen, 25 Aug. 1892: Death of a heart attack on Sat., 20 Aug., of Mrs. Katharina Ewen, wife of Mathias Ewen who resides near the Catholic Church in Francis Creek, Town Kossuth. She was born 10 Sept. 1843 and so was 48 yrs. 11 mos. 10 days of age. She is survived by her husband and a 23 yr. old son. 7 other children are already deceased. Burial was Mon. morning in the Catholic Church Cemetery in Francis Creek. (Note: Tombstone transcriptions has her 18 yrs. of age, but may have been mis-read)
MARGARETHA EWEN cemetery #38 From Der Nord Westen, 03 Nov. 1887: Death of Mrs. Margarethe Ewen on Wed. evening of last week following a short illness, but a long infirmity. She was 74-1/2 years old. The deceased came here in 1847 with her husband Caspar and lived in Kossuth since that time. She leaves two children, Mathias Ewen and Mrs. Prohaska. She had 12 children of which 10 predeceased her, one of the last being Quirin Ewen.
