DANIEL DONOVAN Farmer Died Natural Death, Doctor Finds Heart Attack Is Ruled Cause in Donovan Case MANITOWOC — The mystery surrounding the death of Daniel Donovan, 71 year old retired farmer, was dispelled here early Thursday when an autopsy established that he died from natural causes. The autopsy was performed at 6 a.m. at the Berge Funeral Home by Dr. S. S. Schochet, a pathologist who located in Manitowoc just a few days ago. Dr. Schochet found death due to a heart attack and estimated that life had been extinct four or five days. Coroner Dr. Theodore Teitgen, who had previously attributed death to a broken neck, concurred in Dr. Schochet’s finding. “We are satisfied,” Dr. Teitgen said, “that he died of coronary occlusion.” Dr. Teitgen said he based his original finding on the fact that the neck joints had crumpled upon examination of the body at the funeral home early Wednesday, giving the appearance that they had been broken. He said the neck joints were probably disturbed in handling of the body, which was in an extensive state of decomposition. Events leading up to the discovery of the body were described later Thursday morning by Dr. H.C. Kleeman, Kiel chiropractor, during an interview with Dr. Teitgen and Sheriff Alvin S. Gill. Finds Man Dead Kleeman told the authorities that he had been treating Donovan at two week intervals during the last, several months. He said he last saw Donovan alive on Jan. 16. On two occasions since then, Dr. Kleeman said, he had gone to the Donovan home about five miles west of Valders on Highway 151 but was not able to see the man. The first time he did not get any response to his knocking and on the second occasion, last Saturday, he was told by Mrs. Donovan that her husband was out getting a haircut. Dr. Kleeman said that Mrs. Donovan called him about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and asked him to come to the house. Arriving there shortly after 6:15, he found Donovan dead in bed and notified Dr. Mark Foley of St. Nazianz. Dr. Teitgen quoted Dr. Kleeman as saying that he waited until Dr. Foley arrived and then left. Earlier the coroner had reported that Dr. Kleeman had left before Dr. Foley arrived. Dr. Foley conducted an examination of the body and established death due to a heart attack. Donovan had suffered a stroke about a year ago and spent some time in a Sheboygan rest home. After the body was removed to the funeral home following a two hour delay before the undertakers were able to rouse Mrs. Donovan, who is a semi-invalid, Dr. Teitgen was called into the case and conducted his examination. He found the body in an advanced state of decomposition with the face partly eaten away apparently by rats or cats. No Coherent Account Accompanied by Sheriff Gill and armed with electric lanterns because the house had no electricity, Dr. Teitgen inspected the premises and said he found it in a badly littered and cluttered condition. Mrs. Donovan was in an erratic mental condition, Dr. Teitgen said, and was not able to give a coherent account of what had happened or why she had failed to notify authorities of her husband’s death. Authorities believe that Donovan died last Friday or Saturday. Arrangements are being made to remove Mrs. Donovan from the home. Funeral services for Mr. Donovan will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church at St. Nazianz with the Rev. Denis Cooney officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery. Mr. Donovan was born May 2, 1855, in Calumet County and married Pernelia Williams June 17, 1929, at St. Nazianz. The couple had no children. A brother, Patrick, of Milwaukee, died about a year ago. PERNELIA DONOVAN cemetery #21 Fire swept through the rural home of Mrs. Dan Donovan, R.1, Valders, last Saturday morning, taking the life of this widow, and her nine cats and two dogs. The fire was discovered about 11:00 A.M. by Ray Habermann, an employee of the Manitowoc County Highway Dept., who saw the smoke coming from the kitchen roof, as he drove past in a snow plow grader. The St. Nazianz Fire Dept. was called, and then the men fought the blaze in zero temperature. Officers of the County Traffic Patrol provided traffic control at the scene. The body of Mrs. Permelia(sic) Donovan, 76, which was badly charred, was found on the floor next to a wood stove in the kitchen. Nine cats and two dogs perished in the fire with her. Firemen theorized that Mrs. Donovan may have been starting a fire with kerosene when an explosion occurred in the wood stove. Several oil and kerosene containers were found in the room. The home is located 4-1/2 miles west of Valders on Highway 151. Daniel Donovan, the woman's husband was found dead in the same house in February, 1956, under mysterious circumstances. He had been dead several days. However, death was due to natural causes. Mrs. Donovan lived alone with her cats and dogs. Firemen said there was no electricity in the six-room two-story structure. The fire badly gutted the kitchen and caused extensive smoke and water damage to the other rooms. An unofficial estimate placed the damage from $2,000 to $2,500. Permelia Donovan was born Jan. 24, 1885, in the Town of Eaton, daughter of the late Nelson and Anna McCabe Williams. She was married to Daniel Donovan July 17, 1934. He died in 1956. Survivers(sic) are nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 10:15 A.M. Tuesday at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in St. Nazianz. The Rev. Dennis Cooney officiated and burial was in the church cemetery. The Christianson Funeral Home, St. Nazianz was in charge of arrangements. RICHARD DONOVAN cemetery #47 From Der Nord Westen, 21 Oct. 1909: Richard Donovan, a blind man who lives five miles from here on Calumet Road, recently had the misfortune to fall into an open trapdoor in the cellar of his home and was injured so severely that there is fear for his life. ********* From Der Nord Westen, 23 Dec. 1909: Richard Donovan, old and well-known resident of Town Manitowoc Rapids, who has been blind for 30 years, had the misfortune Thursday last week of falling down the cellar steps and breaking his neck. Death followed soon after. Donovan was 85 years old and leaves his widow, 3 sons and 2 daughters. ********* “Richard Donovan Of Manitowoc, Wis. Died December Sixteenth, Nineteen Hundred and Nine. Aged Eighty-Five Years Seven Month, and Ten Days. Mr. Donovan is survived by an aged wife and ten children, who mourn the loss of the one they dearly loved. Mr. Donovan was a Volunteer of two Wars. During the Mexican War, he sailed under Captain Armstrong, on board the Frigate, “Savannah,” of the Pacific Squadron. After the close of the Mexican War he went to the gold fields of California, and after a stay of short duration in the gold mines, went back to Bantford, Canada, and on the 25th day of November, 1863, he married Eliza Jane McLain, who had been his companion in school days. Mr. and Mrs. Donovan then came back to the United States and purchased a quarter section of land in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, where they lived happily together for fifty-six years, with the exception of a few sad years, such as those of the Civil War, when Mr. Donovan answered to the call of our much loved and martyred President Lincoln, and enlisted in Company F., 36th Wisconsin Volunteers, and once more took up arms to defend the flag he so dearly loved. After the close of the Civil War, Mr. Donovan was twice chosen as Representative and sent to Madison, Wisconsin, the State Capitol, to represent the people of his district. After his second term, it is sad to say, he became afflicted with total blindness, and was obliged to retire from public life and domesticate himself to private life on the farm. Mr. Donovan was a lover of justice and of good government. He believed in the preservation of peace in time of peace, and he believed in the protection of the Flag and of this great Nation in time of war. He was a sociable entertainer, a loving husband, a tender father and a friendly neighbor. The praise of God was ever on his tongue, and he was often heard to say “God’s will be done.” Just six years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Donovan celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Friends and relatives gathered from both far and near to extend their heartiest congratulations to the aged couple. Again many of the same friends and relatives gathered at Mr. Donovan’s home, but this time with sad countenances, to pay their last respects to their aged parent and dead soldier. Mr. Donovan’s place of interment is at St. Joseph Cemetery, at Alverno, Wisconsin.” B T. D. (From the Manitowoc County Civil War Roundtable)

AUGUSTA DOSE cemetery #44 WOMAN WHO WAS CITY CHARGE FOR TWO YEARS FOUND TO HAVE $500 NOTE IN POSSESSION AT HER DEATH Though cared for by the city for nearly two years and sided by the German M.E. church society of which she was a member, Mrs. Augusta Dose, whose death occurred at the hospital, was found to have among her effects at her death a note for $500 and city officials are interested in knowing whether the city will be reimbursed for monies expended in support of Mrs. Dose. Mrs. Dose it is said, told city officials that she was without funds or means of support and upon this representation was cared for at the hospital, it being said that the expense to the city was about $200. The amount would probably have been considerably larger but for the fact that the church society assisted in caring for the aged woman. When Mrs. Dose died and while the body was being prepared for removal the note of $500, said to have been given her by her son in law, a resident of Michigan, was discovered. Whether the city will have any claim upon the note is not determined but it is expected that relatives will reimburse the city for monies expended. Mrs. Dose was 71 years of age and had made her home here for the past 20 years. A daughter at Ludington, Mich., has arrived to take charge of the body which will be buried here.
