CARL DEFORTH cemetery #84 Fatal Accident at Schleswig A large number of accidents occur through the carelessness of parties handling fire arms most of which arise from the pointing of a supposed unloaded gun which unfortunately turns out to be otherwise and the contents removes from Earth to Heaven a valuable life, and it is with sorrow we chronicle that such an act of carelessness took place in Schleswig — 1 1/2 miles south of Kiel — on Friday last, whereby one brother was accidently killed by another. From the information we have received it seems that Carl Daford (sic), aged 20 years was setting in front of the door of the family residence and that Peter, his brother, aged 14 years, stood at the head of the stairs and supposing the gun to be unloaded pulled the trigger to one of the barrels when an explosion took place and the unexpected charge entered Carl’s back below the shoulder blade causing almost instantaneous death. Considerable excitement prevailed and Justice Heins ordered a Coroner’s inquest to be held and officer Bross selected the following named gentlemen as jurors, Hans Greve, Bernard Gutheil, Christian Tiedemann, Henry Hofmeister, Henry Goeres and ______ Guttinger, who, after a careful examination returned a verdict in accordance with the foregoing facts. The deceased is represented as being a very inoffensive and honorable young man and his unexpected death is deeply deplored by all who knew him and the public generally. Chilton Times, September 18, 1875

GUDMUND O. DELEBECK cemetery #41 A MURDER OR A FATAL ACCIDENT On Tuesday last the daughter of a man named Gudman Ellebeck, of Eaton was married to a young man residing in the same town. That evening the wedding festivities were disturbed by a charivari party, who together with the other appliances used for making noise on those occasions were armed with guns and revolvers. In order to quiet the disturbance created by the, the father of the bride went to the door carrying with him some liquor intended for the unbidden guests. As soon as he made his appearance he was struck by a bullet which crashed through his brain, and he dropped dead. Our informant is a young man who was present at the wedding and saw the body of the murdered man. It is impossible to say at present whether the shooting was premeditated or the result of accident. But though the latter may lessen the guilt of the person who committed the deed, it cannot lighten the grief of the stricken family. The law should know no leniency in the punishment of every person taking part in such proceedings which disturb the peace and endanger life. Those charivaris are always disgraceful and sometimes as in this instance, tragic in their result. Oct. 31, page 2 column 4. (she forgot to get the name of the newspaper..it was one of the ones in English) In the court index for Dellebeck is the list of people charged with the shooting. Hopefully we can find the outcome of the trial in a later paper. ******** Name: Delebek Gudmund Olsen D.: 10/29/1878 B.: Reg. D.: 4/15/1879 Sex: M/W Age at Death: 56 Yrs. B.P.: Norway D.P.: Tn. Lib. At Manitowoc the doctors who attended the boy said that he had tuberculosis of the bone and that he was already too weak to be operated. This was a year ago last December. He was given up by the doctors and was taken home where death was expected in a month or two. Spring came, then summer, then autumn and winter passed away and still the sufferer lingered. Last fall he was taken to Green Bay where another attempt was made to affect a cure, but all in vain, and he was again taken home to die. A large circle of friends, by all of whom he was beloved, mourn his untimely death. The funeral will be held Monday with interment in the Catholic cemetery at Francis Creek. JOHN DEMARCE cemetery #82 Boy Aged 11 is Drowning Victim Today John Richard DeMarce, 11, son of Mrs. Dora DeMarce, Howards road, drowned early this afternoon in a swimming hole in the Pigeon river, two miles northwest of the city. The boy was under water for at least 15 minutes, Dr. William VanZanten, acting coroner, said. The sheriff's department went to the scene, and called the police department for a pulmotor. The police department in turn called the Wisconsin Public Service corporation, and several men with an inhalator rushed to the scene. The machine proved useless, however, and artificial respiration was applied by hand for more than an hour. Dr. VanZanten pronounced the boy dead when the repeated efforts met with failure to revive any sparks of life. The tragedy occurred near a farm owned by Atty. A. Matt Werner of this city, and occupied by Melvin Dulmes. It was Dulmes who pulled the lad from five feet of water after he had been summoned to the scene by the cries of other youngsters swimming nearby. Dulmes said the boy had apparently been caught by the slight current flowing in the stream. The body was taken to Ballhorn Funeral Temple. Sheboygan Press. Tues. RAYMOND DEMPSEY cemetery #44 BOY FALLS FROM DOCK INTO RIVER AND MEETS DEATH RAYMOND, SON OF JAMES DEMPSEY, SECOND VICTIM OF SEASON AT NORTH SIDE DOCKS THIS MORNING Another life was sacrificed to the river this morning when Raymond, eight year old son of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Dempsey, while fishing from the dock at the foot of North Seventh street lost his balance and was plunged into the water to meet his death. The body was recovered fifteen minutes after the accident but efforts to revive the boy by use of the pulmotor were unavailing. The Dempsey boy, with a companion, had been at the dock and were to be joined by James, an older brother of the dead lad, who was on his way to the dock at the time the accident happened. The companion of the unfortunate victim of the accident hurrying from the dock to ? an alarm encountered the brother and informed him that Raymond had fallen in and James rushed to the telephone and summoned the police and fire departments and then raced to the dock where he insisted upon diving in an attempt to rescue his brother. He was dissuaded from the action however, and Officer Dueno arrived on the scene in a few minutes, started to drag the river and after a short time recovered the body. With the pulmotor in readiness Drs. Meany and Gleason took charge of the body and worked half an hour in an effort to resuscitate the lad but without success and the child was pronounced dead. Physicians say that it is probable the boy was dead when taken from the water. The boy was eight years of age yesterday. The body was taken in charge by undertakers and later removed to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jeffreys, Fouth and State streets. Mr. and Mrs. Dempsey, the latter a daughter of Mrs. A.B. Melendy, have made their home in the west for several years and returned here a few months ago to spend the summer, accompanied by their two sons, James and Raymond. The sympathy of many friends will go out to the bereaved parents. The funeral will be held from the Sacred Heart Catholic church at 9 o’clock Monday morning. The accident today is the second fatality on the north front river docks this season, another lad having met death in a similar manner a few weeks ago. RUTH DEMPSEY cemetery #44 SAD DEATH OF YOUNG BRIDE OF LESS THAN YEAR Death, at all times sad, seems doubly so in the case of Mrs. James Dempsey, Jr., nee Ruth Edwards, who passed away at the hospital at an early hour today, and the announcement of her demise will be received with keen sorrow by a large circle of friends and awaken the sympathy of the community in which she had always made her home. But 23 years of age and a bride of less than a year, the death of Mrs. Dempsey is pathetically sad. Mrs. Dempsey was born in this city October 30, 1897 and with exception of a few years at Grand Rapids, Mich. had always made her home here. She was married July 31, last year to Jas. Dempsey, Jr. and the young couple have made their home with Mrs. Dempsey's mother, Mrs. Robert Hempton, 116 River Drive. Early in January Mrs. Dempsey was afflicted with the malady which caused her death and although an operation was performed a few days ago, it was futile and death came early today to relieve her of suffering. Although realizing the gravity of her condition and the slender hope for restoration, Mrs. Dempsey was patient and cheerful and the beautiful character of which she was possessed was strengthened by the ordeal through which she passed. The end came peacefully and she passed away as if in sleep. Mr. Dempsey had been employed at the offices of the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Corporation for three years but in January was forced to give up her position and since that time had been confined to her bed. She was a bright, winsome girl, always cheerful and friendly and she won and held friends and the announcement of her untimely death will bring sadness to all who know her. Besides her husband Mrs. Dempsey is survived by her mother Mrs. Robert Hempton and a sister, Alice Edwards and Mr. Hempton, her stepfather. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Hempton home at 116 River Drive.
