ESTELLA BRECKENRIDGE cemetery #43 From Der Nord Westen, 19 Sep. 1907: After a long period of pain, Miss Estella Breckinridge died Tuesday in the hospital here following an operation which had been undertaken to ease her suffering. She was just 17. Her funeral will be held tomorrow morning from St. Boniface Church.

HEINRICH BRECKHEIMER cemetery #83 Mr. Heinrich Breckheimer, an elderly and respected settler in Town Rhine, died the beginning of last week. He was about 72 years old. He had an operation for a rupture a short time ago and although the surgery was a success he was not strong enough to recover. He is survived by his wife, three sons, Fred, George and Henry; and 2 daughters. The funeral was Thursday. Plymouth Post, November 25, 1897


BARBARA BREDL cemetery #7 From Der Nord Westen, 22 Mar. 1900: Death in Whitelaw on Fri. of Mrs. Barbara Bredl of old age. Mrs. Bredl was born in Austria in 1808, thus reaching the age of 92 years. She came to America in 1857 with her husband who died eight years ago. The family settled near Whitelaw where she has lived until just the last few years during which she has been living with the family of her son Franz Bredl. She leaves 2 sons and 4 daughters as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and even one great-great-grandchild. Her funeral was held Mon. morning at the Catholic Cemetery in Whitelaw.


MARGARET BREDL cemetery #43 Margaret, wife of John Bredl, the well known hotel keeper, Tenth and Jay streets, died early this morning after an illness of several months, of general debility. The deceased was a native of Austria where she was born April 23, 1846, being seventy-four years old at the time of her death. The aged couple celebrated their golden wedding July 19, of last year. Besides her husband she leaves six children. They are Mrs. Frank Gerl of Rapids, Mrs. Fred Pruss of Cato, Mrs. Joseph Kohlbeck of Wausau and Mrs. Michael Wellner, Mrs. George Haase and Frank Bredl, of this city. Thirty-two grand children and fifteen great grand children also survive. The funeral will be held at St. Boniface church Thursday morning, interment at Calvary. Manitowoc Herald News, Manitowoc, Wis. ALBERT BREHMER cemetery #78 Father of Reedsville Man Dies At Age of 81 Albert Brehmer, 81, father of Arnold Brehmer, Reedsville, died Saturday evening at the home of his son, Herman, at Rantoul, Calumet county. Funeral services will be held on Thursday afternoon from the Rockland Lutheran church. He was a carpenter and farmer and married Bertha Klessig in 1879. She died four years ago. BERTHA BREHMER cemetery #78 MRS. ALB. BREHMER DEATH AT RANTOUL Mrs. Albert Brehmer, nee Bertha Klessig, died Sunday at the home of her son in Rantoul, Calumet county. The deceased had been in failing health for some months. Last June she was brought to the Holy Family hospital in this city where she underwent an operation, her leg being amputated. Funeral services will be held Thursday at one-thirty p.m. from the home of her son Emil and at two-fifteen p.m. from the Lutheran church in Eaton. Burial will be in the adjoinng cemetery. The deceased was born in Mosel, Sheboygan county in 1857. Her husband Albert Brehmer, five sons including Otto Adolph of the town of Eaton, Arnold of Reedsville and Herman on the old homestead and two daughters survive. A sister Mrs. Charles Eickert, Peshtigo, three brothers, Christ and Adolph Klessig, of Curtis, Wis., Louis of Rockland, and ?? ????? grand children also survive. HELEN BREHMER cemetery #78 Mrs. Helen Brehmer, 73, of 421 S. Main St., Brillion, died unexpectedly Sunday at the home of a son, Donald. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Collins. The Rev. Kenneth Edenhauser will officiate and burial will be in the parish cemtery. Mrs. Brehmer, nee Helen Haese, was born Apr. 15, 1900, in the Town of Rockland, daughter of the late Gottlieb and Ottellia Krueger Haese. She was married to Herman Brehmer May 9, 1921. They farmed in the Town of Rantoul their entire life. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid Society, American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 126 of Brillion and the Golden Agers Club. Survivors include two sons, Earl, of Green Bay and Donald, of Hilbert; a brother, Hubert, of Hilbert, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Her husband, a daughter, a brother and two sisters preceded her in death. HERMAN BREHMER cemetery #78 Herman W. Brehmer, 69, of Rt. 2, Brillion, died Monday at home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thrusday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Collins. The Rev. Victor Wendland will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Brehmer was born May 7, 1900, in Town of Rantoul, son of the late Albert and Bertha Klessig Brehmer. He married Helen Haese May 9, 1922, at Reedsville, and the couple farmed the homestead farm. Survivors include the wife; two sons (private), a sister Mrs. Meta Hanmeier, of Menasha; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. A daughter, three sisters and four brothers preceded him in death. BARBARA BREIDER cemetery #63 From Der Nord Westen, 07 Oct. 1909: (From the correspondent in Mishicott, 05 Oct.) Death last Wednesday evening of 88-year old Mrs. Breider in the home of her son John. The elderly lady, who was sick only one day, is survived by her sorrowing husband, as well as several children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The funeral was held Saturday from the Catholic Church with a long funeral procession to the cemetery. ********** From Der Nord Westen, 07 Oct. 1909: Death Thursday last week, after an illness of only a few hours, of Mrs. John Breider, Sr., in the home of her son John Breider, Jr., in Eastwin. The deceased was born 17 February 1822 in Torea, Germany. In addition to her sorrowing husband she is survived by 3 children and several grandchildren. The funeral was held in the Catholic cemetery in Mishicott.

A number of people have been put under quarantine here by the State Health Department - those who attended the funeral of the son of Peter Breider in Mishicott, who died of smallpox. ******* From Der Nord Westen, 17 Jan. 1895: Regarding those who attended the Breider funeral in Two Rivers, two of them are sick: Peter Christoffel and Mrs. Nic. Kaiser. A Breider daughter is also still ill.


MARY BREIDER cemetery #63 From Der Nord Westen, 15 Dec. 1904: (From the correspondent in Mishicott, 13 Dec.) Also, Mrs. P. Breider was taken by death on Mon. Her death was a relief from the many years of illness with consumption. Mrs. Breider was a true wife and mother and was well regarded by everyone. The funeral was held Thurs. in the cemetery of the local Catholic Church under the direction of Father St. Louis.


WILLIAM BREIDER cemetery #63 Funeral services for William R. Breider Sr., 86 of 2534-38th St., Two Rivers, who died Friday, will be 9:30 a.m. Monday at Deja and Martin Funeral Chapels and 10 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Two Rivers, the Rev. Paul Schumacher officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Mishicot. Mr. Breider was born Oct. 19, 1884, in the Town of Mishicot, son of the late Peter and Mary Reich Breider. He was engaged in farming most of his life and was employed at Hamilton Mfg. Co. for eight years prior to his retirement. He married the late Martha Hoffman Oct. 3, 1923, at Mishicot. She preceded him in death May 18, 1966. Survivors include a son, three daughters, 17 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. CHESTER BREIVOGEL cemetery #89A Chester W. Breivogel, 69, of 1415 Glenwood St., Two Rivers, retired tool and die designer at Hamilton Industries, Two Rivers, died early Friday morning at University Hospitals, Madison, where he had been a patient 10 days. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Two Rivers, the Rev. Edward Stelter officiating. Burial will be in Pioneers' Rest Cemetery, Two Rivers. Mr. Breivogel was born Oct. 17, 1903, at Two Rivers, son of the late John and Mary Krueger Breivogel. He attended St. John Parochial School and was graduated from former Two Rivers High School with the Class of 1921. He retired from his position at the Hamilton firm in 1964. He married Emma Raatz at Two Rivers Sept. 11, 1929. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) LOUISA BREMER cemetery #70 From Der Nord Westen, 19 Aug. 1909: Death Saturday in Manitowoc Rapids of 77–year old Mrs. Louisa Brenner(sic) from old age debility. The deceased, who had come here as a child, is survived by several children. The funeral was held Tuesday from the Lutheran Church in Newton. (Note: I believe the newspaper had the surname wrong.)


MARIA BREMER cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 20 Feb. 1902: After an illness of about 5 wks., Mrs. Maria Bremer died Fri. of bronchitis with which she also had heart trouble. The deceased was born 75 yrs. ago in Mecklenburg and came to Manitowoc County with her husband in 1852. The couple took over a farm in Town Manitowoc Rapids, but following the death of her husband Mrs. Bremer moved in with her sister here, where she died. She is survived by 5 children.


WILHELM BREMER cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 05 Dec. 1895: After a long illness, Mr. Wilhelm Bremer died on his farm in Town Cato on 22 Nov. of a tumor. The deceased was born 26 Feb. 1823 in Malchow, Mecklenburg-Schwerin. In 1850 he married his wife, who survives, and they came to America in 1853 settling in Town Newton where they have lived for 38 yrs. In addition to his wife he leaves 3 sons and 3 daughters. WILLIAM BREMER cemetery #70 From Der Nord Westen, 13 June 1895: Death Tues. morning in Town Manitowoc of Wilhelm Bremer. While his son was plowing, the horses became fractious and Mr. Bremer went to help but was thrown down by the horses and broke his neck. The 61 yr. old man leaves a widow and 6 grown children. Burial was this morning in the Town Newton cemetery.


JAMES BREMSER cemetery #63 James Bremser, 15, of Mishicot, died Tuesday evening as the result of a traffic accident in the village. Funeral services will be at 10:30 Friday at Lambert Funeral Home and at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Mishicot. The Rev. Earl Brouchoud will officiate and burial will be in the parish cemetery. James was born July 27, 1958, son of Frank and Rose Feucht Bremser. BERNARD BRENNAN cemetery #44 BRENNAN, HEAD OF VALDERS FIRM, IS DEAD AT 73 Barney Brennan, 73, president and treasurer of the Valders Lime and Stone Company of Valders and one of the founder of the company, died Tuesday at St. Michael's hospital, Milwaukee, where he had been a patient for a week. Mr. Brennan had been active for years in the business and public life at Valders, formerly serving as bank president and also was on the village board for years. He was active until less than two weeks ago, when taken ill. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at the Berge funeral home, Valders, and at 10 o'clock at the St. Mary's Catholic church, Clarks Mills. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in this city. Mr. Brennan was born in Eaton in 1871, where he spent his early life, and then moved to Hayton where he attended school. He also went to high school in Chilton and after leaving school was employed by the Western Lime and Cement company. He married Miss Margaret Wier of Kinderhook, Ill., 51 years ago. He continued as superintendent of the lime company's plant at Hayton until 1904 when he was transferred to Ormsby, Wis., where he was in charge of a lumbermill, store and post office for the Western Lime and Cement Company. In 1907, Mr. Brennan moved to Valders to organize the Valders Lime and Stone company with the late T. G. Larson, Dr. T.J. O'Brien and Frank Einberger. Under Mr. Brennan's direction the company has enjoyed an expanding growth. He also took an active interest in village affairs and was chosen a village trustee serving for years on the Valders village board. He was one of the organizers and for years president of the Valders State bank and also operated a farm near Valders and one near Antigo. Mrs. Brennan died in 1938. Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. Henry Grim of Green Bay, Mrs. Harry Maethe of Mosinee(?), Mrs. William Curran of Antigo, Mrs. Herbert Peterson of Valders; three sons, Harold and Owen of Valders, Raymond of Waupaca; and 25 grandchildren. CINDERELLA BRENNAN cemetery #44 Mrs. Owen T. Brennan, 37, nee Cinderella Breu, Valders, died this morning at 5:30 at the Holy Family hospital. Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 9:30 from the St. Mary's Catholic church in Clark's Mills. Burial is to be in Evergreen cemetery, Manitowoc. Mrs. Brennan was born May 23, 1901, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Breu. She was married to Owen T. Brennan July 9, 1924. She was a member of the Christian Mothers of the St. Mary's church, the American Legion Auxiliary at Valders and the Ladies Progressive Club of Valders. Survivors besides the husband and her mother, include six sons, a daughter, all at home; two brothers, Ted Breu of Kohler and Winrich Breu of Milwaukee; and three sisters, Mrs. W.A. Gutmann, St. Nazianz; Mrs. W. W. Birkle, Sheboygan; and Mrs. P.E. Brennan of North Fond du Lac. EMANUEL T. BRENNAN Emmanuel T. Brennan, 61, of Milwaukee, was dead on arrival Saturday morning at Johnston Municipal Hospital, Milwaukee, after he was struck at 2 a.m. by a hit and run driver. He died of a skull fracture. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Reedsville Funeral Home, the Rev. Alois Pimeskern officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mr. Brennan was born Dec. 23, 1898, in the Town of Cato, son of the late James and Catherine Quirk Brennan. He served in the Army during World War II and for a number of years was employed as a welder at AMPCO Metal Inc. of Milwaukee. He was a graduate of the Milwaukee School of Engineering. She was married to Thomas Brennan July 21, 1907, at Charlestown, Calumet County. The couple resided at Valders until 1919 when Mr. Brennan became sheriff for a year. He preceded her in death June 16, 1939. She was a charter member of Eagles Auxiliary. Surviving are five sons, two daughters, 20 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. PIONEER DIES, AGE 70 James Brennan, life long resident of Manitowoc county, and for many years prominent as a political leader, died at his home, 408 North Sixth Street, last night, a victim of cancer. The funeral will be held from the Urbanek and Wattawa chapel to the Sacred Heart church Saturday morning at 9. Mr. Brennan was 70 years of age, having been born in Cato February 10, 1855, where he spent most of his life on a farm. He served as supervisor of the town for three years and for fifteen years was a school clerk. Later he was a government mail carrier at Cato and served in other official positions. He was married to Catherine Quirk in 1883 and besides his widow is survived by five children, Mrs. Thomas Doyle of Cato; Mrs. Peter Faivey of Maple Grove; Lovell and William of Cato, and Thomas E. of Texas. Brennan, 60, of 1026 South 17th street, former Manitowoc county sheriff and chairman of the county board, died at 9:15 p.m. Friday at St. Nicholas hospital in Sheboygan after an illness of about two years. He had been a patient of the Sheboygan hospital for three weeks. FUNERAL TUESDAY Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. form the Leschke Funeral Home and at 10 o'clock at St. Boniface Catholic church. The Rev. Theo F. Kersten, pastor of St. Wendell's Catholic church and a personal friend of Mr. Brennan, will conduct the services. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Leschke Funeral Home from Sunday noon until the hour of the funeral on Tuesday. Mr. Brennan was born in Manitowoc county on March 29th, 1879, and he married Hermina Schott on June 21, 1904. The couple would have celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary next Wednesday. Mr. Brennan, an active Democrat, was elected sheriff in 1919 and he served one term. Prior to 1919 he was chairman of the Manitowoc county board. He was a member of the Eagles lodge. He had been employed as salesman for the Monarch Liquor Co. MARIE J. BRENNER cemetery #43 Marie G. Brenner, age 90, died Wednesday, July 2, 2008, at the Sun Prairie Health Care Center. She was born Aug. 12, 1917, in Oconto, the daughter of Lesime and Laura (Carriveau) Grenier. Prior to moving to Sun Prairie in 2001, Marie had resided in Waunakee. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) She was preceded in death by two husbands: Clarence Collins and Martin Brenner; her parents; five sisters: Erma, Donna, Violet, Doris and Norma; and four brothers: Lawrence, Robert, Edmund and Julius. Marie loved her family and enjoyed spending time with her nieces and nephews. She enjoyed playing cards, especially cribbage, which she played until one week before she passed away. Marie was a super welder at Sturgeon Bay Shipyards during World War II. For many years, her main profession was a waitress. She loved living in Jackson Hole, Wyo., and she loved to tell stories about her varied experiences. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, at the Cress Funeral Home with the Rev. Brian Dulli presiding. Friends may call from 5:30 p.m. until time of service. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, at the Calvary Cemetery, 2601 S. 14th St., Manitowoc. RICHARD BRETHOUWER cemetery #32 Richard A. Brethouwer, age 70, of 707 Columbus St., Two Rivers, died Sunday morning, Feb. 11, 2007, at Aurora Medical Center of Manitowoc County. Richard was born Jan. 20, 1937, in Sheboygan, son of the late Raymond and Arline VerGowe Brethouwer. He drove truck for many companies until his death. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany. Richard married the former Mary Nachtwey on June 10, 1995, at Pine Crest Historical Village in Manitowoc. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister: Linda Schoenfeld; and one nephew. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 16, 2007, at Knollwood Memorial Chapel, 1500 Highway 310, Manitowoc. The Rev. MICHAEL BREU cemetery #21 St. Nazianz Funeral services for Michael Breu, who died at his home in Sheboygan last Friday of an attack of paralysis, were held here Monday morning, solemn requiem mass being read by three priests of St. Gregory's church. Interment was in the nearby church cemetery. The deceased was born in the town of Manitowoc Rapids Oct. 19, 1858, but his home had been St. Nazianz until six years ago, when he moved to Sheboygan to be employed at the Northern Furniture Co. He was married in 1888 to Miss Francis Zipperer, who survives him. Besides his wife, he is mourned by the following: Brothers - George of Auburndale, and Joseph of Marshfield; sisters - Theresa (Mrs. Math. Kautzer) Madison; sons - Theodore of Kohler, and Winrich of Sheboygan; daughters - Ida (Mrs. W.W. Birkle), Sheboygan, Anna (Mrs. W. Gutman) Sumatra, Mont., Laura (Mrs. Patrick Brennan) North Fond du Lac, and Cinderalla (Mrs. Olive Brennan) Valders. HERMAN BREUER cemetery #43 From Der Nord Westen, 21 Dec. 1899: Death Fri. morning of Hermann Breuer of pneumonia. He had a severe chill on Thanksgiving Day which shortly led to the pneumonia and then to his death despite medical attention. Mr. Breuer was born 29 Oct. 1829 in the Rhineland and came to America in 1862 settling in St. Nazianz. In 1866 he moved here to Manitowoc and worked as a veterinarian. He leaves his sorrowing widow and 6 grown children. She was born Louise Schuette September 25, 1897, in Manitowoc, daughter of the late Louis and Clara Schmidt Schuette. She attended Milwaukee Downer College and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1921 with a B.A. Degree in Economics. Louise was a memeber of the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority. She married Orval Breuer June 27, 1922, in Manitowoc, and he preceded her in death November 30, 1970. She was a member of First Lutheran Church and a 70 year member of P.E.O. Chapter of Manitowoc. Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, a sister, Martha Vinton, Manitowoc; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, one brother, John Schuette; a sister, Helen Ristad, and a grandson, John Breuer. The family will greet relatives and friends at First Lutheran Church Chapel from 10 a.m. Thursday until the time of services at 11 a.m. Memorials would be appreciated to the First Lutheran Church, Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, or St. Mary's Home. MARIA BREUNIG cemetery #44 MRS. BREUNIG IS DEAD, AGED 88 MRS. BREUNIG, ONE OF CITY'S OLDEST RESIDENTS IS DEAD. Death claimed one of the city's oldest resident and released her from weary months of suffering when at an early hour this morning Mrs. Mary Breunig closed her eyes in death at the home of her daughter Mrs. Fred C. Borcherdt, at Hotel Victoria. Mrs. Breunig, who was past 87 years of age, had been ill for eighteen months and during the last six weeks had been unable to help herself and death came as a messenger of release from suffering. Mrs. Breunig was born at Spier Germany, April 17, 1824 and came to Manitowoc in 1855 and had made her home here ever since. Mr. Breunig died May 26, 1891 since which time Mrs. Breunig had made her home with her daughter. Mrs. Breunig is survived by one son, George, of Antigo and two daughters, Mrs. F.C. Borcherdt, this city and Mrs. W. Borcherdt of Kaukauna. Owing to her advanced age and long illness the death of Mrs. Breunig was not unexpected, though to the last she retained her facilities. AUGUSTA BREY cemetery #26 Mrs. Michael Brey, 72, nee Augusta Raatz, died Wednesday afternoon at the farm home in Franklin following a three months illness. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Husar funeral home, Kellnersville, and at 9:30 at the St. Josephs Catholic church, the Rev. Frank Svatek officiating. Burial will be in the church cemtery. Mrs. Brey was born in Germany in 1874 and came to this country at the age of 17 years. In 1894 she was married to Mr. Brey and they located on a farm in Franklin. Survivors are the husband; six daughters, Mrs. Joseph Stedl of Menchalville, Mrs. John Wolf, Mrs. John Heit and Mrs. T.J. Knoblock of Milwaukee, Mrs. Frank Kragel of Sheboygan and Mrs. Ralph Seigworth of Sawyer; five sons, Michael Jr., John and Quirin of Franklin, William of this city and Edward of Hartford, Conn.; two brothers, William of Brillion and Gustave of Eagle River; 23 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. CARL BREY (d. 1941) cemetery #44 Carl Brey, 39, of 820 North Eighth street, died suddenly of a heart attack at the home Saturday noon. Mr. Brey had always enjoyed good health although he had complained of a slight cold Friday. He had completed plans to attend the Packer-Bear football game at Green Bay Sunday with two friends when he was stricken. Funeral services, under Masonic auspices, will be held at the Masonic Temple Tuesday at 2 p.m. The Rev. C.H. Phipps of the First Presbyterian church will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetry. Mr. Brey was born at Algoma October 29, 1901 and when a boy came to this city with his parents. After completing school he entered the employ of the Manitowoc Ship Building Company, where he was a clerk. In 1924 he married Miss Nora Spaeth of Two Rivers. He was a member of the Masonic Order. Survivors are the widow; two daughters, Lois Ann and Doris May, and a son, Donald, all of this city. The body may be viewed at the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home. DOROTHEA BREY cemetery #44 MRS. E. BREY, SR, PIONEER, DEAD TODAY AGED 76 Mrs. Edward Brey, Sr., pioneer resident of the city, having made her home here for more than fifty years, died at the family home on North Eight street at 10 o'clock this morning, aged 76. Mrs. Brey had been a sufferer from an incurable malady for a long time but became seriously ill only ten weeks ago, since which time it had been known that death was only a matter of time. During the past week Mrs. Brey's condition had been critical and death which came today, was a relief from pain suffering. Mrs. Brey was conscious and knew those about her up to the end, which was peaceful Mrs. Brey was born in Germany November 8, 1847 and since her arrival in America over fifty years ago had always made her home in this city. She was married to Mr. Brey fifty years ago September 20. Her husband with four children, Walter, Edward Jr., and Mrs. Fred Levenhagen, this city, and Mrs. Norman Markel, of Rochester, Minn., survive. One sister Mrs. Carl Engel, this city and seven grandchildren also survive. Mrs. Brey was a lifelong member of the Lutheran church and was active in the Lutheran Women's society up to the time that ill health attacked her. She was a woman whose life centered about her home and children and her life may be summed up with the tribute-good wife and mother. DIES AT HOME LAST EVENING Was Operated on Two Weeks Ago; In Business With Father; Took Over Store 3 Years Ago Suffering an attack of appendicitis two weeks ago yesterday, and undergoing an operation, Edwin Frederick Brey, aged 44, prominent north side grocer, passed away last evening at the family home, 810 North Eighth street. His death was a shock to his family and friends, many of the latter not even knowing that he was in a serious condition. Mr. Brey, who, with his father, had been engaged in the retail grocery and fruit business on the north side here for 25 years, had enjoyed the best of health up to the day he was stricken ill. He was a great sport devotee, and despite his weight, was able to play diamond ball in the same class with players many years his junior. Only two days before he was taken ill he played a game of diamond ball on the Lincoln park grounds as a member of the Herald-News team. Burial on Saturday After his operation Mr. Brey showed signs of improvement and for days strong hopes were held out for his recovery. But Wednesday his condition took a turn for the worse and he passed away at 7:30 last evening. Funeral services will be held on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 from the home on North Eighth street and at two o'clock from the Emanuel Lutheran church on the north side, with Rev. Uetzman officiating. The deceased was born in this city, February 23, 1886 and has always made his home here. He obtained his education in the local schools and early in life entered the employ of his father, Edward Brey Sr. in the conduct of the grocery and fruit store on North Eighth street, located on the present site of the Dick Bros. store. He was later taken into the business and the firm became known as Edward Brey and Sons. In the year 1914 a new brick store and warehouse was erected by the firm at the southwest corner of North Eight and Chicago streets. Takes Over Business Two and a half years ago Edward Brey Sr. retired from active business and the son then took charge of the business, which he conducted up to the time of his death. He was married September 8, 1910 to Miss Mary Albrecht of Two Rivers, who survives him with two sons, Edwin and Kenneth, his father, Edward Brey Sr., one brother, Walter Brey of Chicago and two sisters, Mrs. Norman Markle of Rochester, Minn., and Mrs. Fred Levenhagen of this city. Was Ardent Fan The death of Mr. Brey removes from the community an ardent sport fan particularly of high school athletics. Both of Mr. Brey's sons, Kenneth, who graduated this last June, and Edwin, who finished two years ago, were prominent in basketball, football and track at Lincoln high school and Mr. Brey was a close follower of the teams on which his sons were members, follwing them to neighboring cities for their contests. Mr. Brey was a devout member of the Lutheran church here. Always of a jovial and happy disposition he counted his friends by the hundreds who will deeply regret the passing of a most promising and progressive young business man. EDWARD BREY (d. 1943) cemetery #44 Edward Brey. Sr., 90, retired Manitowoc merchant and resident here for 70 years, died this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fred Levenhagen, 830 North Eight street. Funeral plans are indefinite awaiting arrival of a son, Walter Brey, from Chicago this afternoon, but will be held either Monday or Tuesday afternoon from the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran church. The Rev. Theophil Uetzmann, will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Mr. Brey was born in Germany in 1853 and came to Manitowoc in 1872. He worked in the northern lumber woods for a time and then took a position in the grist mill of Flueger and Wall. He remained with this firm nine years and then became a salesman for M. Kellner and Sons. In 1905 Mr. Brey engaged in the flour, feed and produce business on North Eight street. He was later joined in the business by his son, Edward, Jr., and the business expanded to the general grocery line and later moved to a new location at North Eight and Chicago streets. He retired from active business of heading the store in 1927 and the business was taken over by his son, Edward, Jr. who died in 1930. Mr. Brey married Miss Dorothea Schroeder 69 years ago. She died in 1924. Since retiring Mr. Brey has been making his home with his children. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Levenhagen of this city, Mrs. Norman Markle, of Rochester, Minn., son, Walter, of Chicago; five grandchildren and seven grandchildren. FRANCES M. BREY cemetery #44 Mrs. Edward Brey, 53, of 1419 Philippen street, died suddenly Friday afternoon. She visited a physician's office and while waiting was stricken with a sudden heart attack and died while on the way to the hospital in the ambulance. Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. from the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home and at two o'clock from the First German Evan. Lutheran church, the Rev. L.H. FRIEDERIKA BREY (d. 1915) cemetery #44 LONG TIME RESIDENT OF CITY IS DEAD Mrs. Brey, South Side Resident, Called By Death Mrs. Fredericka(sic) Brey, widow of the late August Brey, and a resident of the city for nearly half a century, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Koepke, 1135 So. Thirteenth street this morning, death being due to infirmities of age. The funeral will be held from the late home Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock. She was a junior student at Lincoln high school. The body will lie in state after 7 p.m. today at the Pfeffer funeral home. JOSEPH BREY (d. 1917) cemetery #43 BRANCH MAN DEAD HERE, WAS ILL LONG TIME Joseph Brey, a resident of Branch since he was two years old, died at the hospital this morning after a long illness aged 50 years. He had been at the hospital since May 1. Mr. Brey was employed as a carpenter in the Goodrich shops at Chicago where he took ill and returned here. He is survived by five children who have made their home with relatives here and Branch. The body was removed to the home of his sister, Mrs. Joseph Zipperer, 429 North Ninth street. JOSEPH BREY cemetery #65 Joseph Brey, 76-year-old farmer, died Wednesday morning at his farm home in Glenmore township, Brown county, after a short illness. Funeral services will be held at the Knutson funeral home, Denmark, at 2 p.m. Friday. Mr. Brey ws born in Kellnersville. He had lived and farmed in Glenmore for the past 25 years. He married Mary Trapp in 1916. He is survived by his wife; a sister, Mrs. Clara Worsch of Seymour, Brown county; and two brothers, Mike of Whitelaw and John of Hancock, Mich. LOUIS BREY cemetery #7 From Der Nord Westen, 17 Apr. 1902: Louis Brey, a well-known resident of Branch, died of smallpox on Sun. immediately after his 30th birthday. He is the 3rd victim in our county during this year who has succumbed to the milder form of this dread disease. His body was buried Sun. night in the Whitelaw Cemetery. In addition to his widow and several children, Brey is survived by 8 sisters. (Note: According to statute, smallpox victims had to be buried at night)


MARY BREY (d. 1968) cemetery #44 Mrs. Mary Brey, 84, of 810 N. 8th St., Manitowoc, died Monday morning at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Glen Uhke will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mrs. Brey was born Feb. 15, 1884, at Two Rivers, daughter of the late Anton and Pauline Gesell Albrecht. She was married to Edward F. Brey Sept. 8, 1909 at Two Rivers. They owned and operated Brey's Food Market, Manitowoc, until his death, Aug. 13, 1930. She continued management until 1948 when she sold the interest to her son, Edwin. She remained active in its operation until 1964. She is survived by two sons, Edwin and Kenneth, of Manitowoc; a brother, Albert, of Two Rivers; four grandchildren and a great grandchild. ANNA BREZINSKY cemetery #44 MRS. BREZINSKY DIES AFTER ONLY SHORT ILLNESS Almost Lifelong Resident of This City The many friends of Mrs. Anna Brezinsky were shocked to hear of her sudden death at the Holy Family hospital at an early hour this morning, Mrs. Brezinsky having died after an illness of only several days, and up until last evening she was feeling fine and then, taking a turn for the worse, she was rushed to the hospital where she died at 3 o'clock this morning. Mrs. Breinsky nee Anna Paska was born in this city on June 19, 1878, and has made her home here her entire life with the exception of a few years when the family resided at Kewaunee. Her husband, Henry Brezinsky, preceded her in death thirteen years ago, having gone down on the Pere Marquette No. 18 in 1910, the boat upon which he was first mate. Four children, the Misses Helen, Stella and Alice together with Harry Brezinsky survive. Also four sisters, Mmes. Clara Mishalak of this city and Rose Ligewtski, Lawrence Sauer and Frank O'Konsky of Milwaukee; and four brothers, Anton of Los Angeles, John of Kewaunee, Joseph of Milwaukee, and George Paska of Two Rivers. Mrs. Brezinsky's mother, Mrs. Margaret Paska also survives and she is making her home with the family at 627 North Seventh street. IRENE M. BREZONI cemetery #32 OBITUARY, Herald Times Reporter, Manitowoc, WI 11 Apr 2005 Irene M. Brezoni, age 88, of 3917 S. 18th St. Manitowoc, died Saturday evening, April 9, 2005 at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at the First Lutheran Church Chapel. The Rev. Steven Solberg will officiate with entombment to follow at Knollwood Mausoleum Chapel, State Highway 310, Manitowoc. The former Irene Free was born Oct. 5, 1916 in the town of Newton, daughter of the late William and Lillian Vetter Free. She attended school in the town of Newton and the town of Liberty. On Oct. 3, 1936, she was married to Frank J. Brezoni at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in the town of Liberty. Frank preceded her in death on Aug. 25, 1978. In the past Irene was employed for 33 years at the S.S. Kresge store in Manitowoc. She was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Manitowoc Senior Center. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law: nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law: nieces, nephews other relatives and friends survive.
