EDWARD BOETTCHER cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 16 July 1908: Saturday afternoon 20-year old Edward Boettcher and several comrades went bathing in the river near the bridge of the Wisconsin Central Railroad. He could not swim and in a deep part of the river he sank before his comrades could help him. The body was recovered shortly after by policemen Carle and Christiansen. Boettcher had come here from Antigo in December last year and was employed in the shipyard. His funeral was held Monday afternoon. ******** ONE DEAD AND ONE NEAR IT IN RIVER Edward Boettcher, Aged 20, Loses Life While Bathing - L. Kaufman's Close Call Edward Boettcher, aged 20, is the season's first victim of the river in the city, Boettcher losing his life while bathing with a party of friends near the Wisconsin Central bridge Saturday afternoon. The body was recovered and the funeral was held at the home of an uncle Edward Boettcher, Twenty-Sixth street this afternoon, Rev. Huppert officiating. Boettcher, a native of Antigo and an orphan, came here last December and was employed at the Dry Dock Co. yards. Saturday the boy, with his sister and a brother, visited at the home of his uncle, Edward Boetcher (sic), 26th street on the occasion of the latter's birthday and during the afternoon, the boys planned to go to the rivers. Boetcher was unable to swim and being unfamiliar with the river, had been in the water but a short time when he encountered a depth that proved fatal. Efforts to reach the boy proved unavailing. The death of Boettcher followed that of Irving Gartzke, a Centerville boy who lost his life in a mill pond at the village Friday night while bathing. The Gartzke boy was 17 and had recently launched the Cleveland Centerville review, to be published month[ly]. The boy was a son of G. Gartzke, proprietor of the Centerville brewery and attended school at Milwaukee. The body was recoverd. Another life was rescued from a fate similar to that of young Boettcher when Leonard Kaufman, a West Side youth was taken from the river at Rapids by Frank Bartels after the boy was thought dead, Kaufman cried for help but companions thought he was fooling and he was permitted to sink for the second time before assistance was given him. The boy was revived after twenty minutes of work over him. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Monday, July 13, 1908 P.1 ******** [cause: drowning]

HERMAN BOETTCHER cemetery #76 Fish Swim Right into House Nature put it in the hands of one Reedsville man to beat the H.C.L. at least for a day when three good sized pickerel were found in water which flooded his basement. Many cellars at Reedsville have drains opening into the creek and when the creek suddenly rises, as it did the past week during the heavy rains, home owners who neglect to close the drains find their cellars flooded. Herman Boettcher who by the way, has been chief of the fire department at Reedsville and in his official capacity was too busy to look after his own cellar, returned home the other day to find the basement under water. Boettcher heard a noise and investigated and discovered three large pickerel which had been carried into the drain and were unable to find their way out. Fair prey. Nuff said. PAUL BOETTCHER MANGLED CORPSE BROUGHT HERE Appleton Young Man Killed by Train is Buried at Evergreen Sometime during Saturday night or early Sunday morning, Paul Boettcher, a young man who has relatives here and was formerly employed in this city, was run over by a C.& N.W. train near Appleton Junction and killed, his body having been found lying between the track Sunday morning. The body was brought here for burial, interment taking place at Evergreen. The Appleton Crescent gives details of the accident as follows: “Paul Boettcher, a single man aged about 24 years, was run over by a train on the Northwestern railway Saturday night or Sunday morning, near Appleton Junction, and instantly killed, being terribly mangled. He was found at 6:25 Sunday morning, lying between the tracks, just as the “Y” switch south of the Junction. His right arm was cut off close to the shoulder; his left leg at the knee, and half of the foot cut off. His skull was crushed in at the back and just forward of the temple, and nearly every bone in his body broken. Deceased is a nephew and adopted son of Henry Boettcher, who runs the brick yard about two miles from the city. His own father Albert Boettcher, lives in Brillion, but Paul was adopted by his uncle when only a few months old and has since made his home with him. He was last seen alive about 11 o’clock Saturday night when he left a saloon in the west end and started for home on the railway track. It is not yet known what train hit him but it is believed to have been the southbound passenger at 1:54 as the remains appear to have been dragged toward the south. A man answering Boettcher’s description was found by a resident of Spencer street, sitting in the ditch beside the track, near Spencer street early Sunday morning, but could not be roused. While attempting to rouse him the north-bound 1:04 train passed. A policeman was called, but when he arrived the man had disappeared and could not be found. It is now believed this man was Boettcher and that he proceeded as far toward the brick yard as the point where he was found, and was there overtaken by the 1:54.” An inquest was called, but an adjournment taken until Friday night. JOHN BOLEN cemetery #43 IN DEATH’S SLUMBERS Ex-Sheriff John Bolen Comes to the End of Life’s Journey at Age of 62 Years PARALYSIS HASTENED END Ill for Two Years. He Suffered Greatly—Was for Many Years a Political Leader in the County—A Pioneer Life’s close came for John Bolen at an early hour this morning and the long battle against the hopeless ravages of disease ended in the sleep that endures for eternity. For two days he had been unconscious and the end was calm and peaceful, earth’s slumber being merged into the everlasting peace of death with scarcely a warning to watching loved ones that the spirit had crossed the border land. Death was the result of paralysis which Mr. Bolen suffered two years ago and during the past three months he had failed rapidly. John Bolen was a native of Ireland, born in County Kerry, March 17, 1840, and was an only child. Three years after his birth the family located at St. John, New Brunswick where a short time later Mrs. Bolen died. Father and son removed to Wisconsin, taking up their home at Milwaukee and in a few years came to this county, locating at Kossuth where Mr. Bolen engaged in farming and was one of the pioneers of the county. Grown to manhood’s estate, the son was married August 18, 1866 to Miss Mary Jane Fagan, of Cooperstown, the wife who survives him. In early life Mr. Bolen took an active interest in politics and for many years was the head of affairs of the Democratic party in the county and in 1887 was honored by being elected Sheriff. In 1891 he was again re-elected and upon the expiration of his term in 1893, retired from active life and has since lived in retirement. In his political career Mr. Bolen was the acknowledged leader in the county of the party with which he affiliated. He was aggressive and a thorough manager and it was largely through his efforts that the success which attended the party organization in those days was made possible. During his residence in the city he was appointed Marshal under the administration of ex-mayor Joseph Vilas and held the office for two years, being faithful and conscientious in the discharge of his duties. Few residents of Manitowoc county were more widely or generally known than John Bolen and the announcement of his death will cause sorrow to many friends. He had made his home in the city for thirty years and had for a greater portion of the time, been active in its affairs. Socially he was a genial, whole-souled man, generous and charitable and possessing those broad sympathies that won him friends to whom he was always faithful and steadfast. He was a natural linguist and was conversant in Gaelic, German, Bohemian and Polish. For eighteen years he had conducted the Wisconsin house, Ninth and Jay streets, which occupied the site of the present German-American Bank building. Mr. Bolen held membership in a number of fraternal and insurance orders, among them being the Catholic Knights of America, the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin, the Northwestern and Third Ward Insurance Societies. The funeral will be held Friday morning from St. Boniface Catholic church under the auspices of the local branch of the Society of Catholic Knights of Wisconsin. Interment will be at Calvary cemetery.
