In 1855 he immigrated to America with his brother Louis and both came to Manitowoc. Louis Bloquelle later moved to Detroit where he died several years ago. Gustav Bloquelle remained here and opened a box making business which he operated until his death except for the war years. At the outbreak of the war he enlisted in Company ‘B’ of the 9th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, a company almost totally made up of men from our county, with which he served until the end of the war. After his discharge he returned to Manitowoc and reopened his box business. In 1867 he married Mrs. Baensch, the widow of Capt. August Baensch who now survives him, along with her son, former Vice Governor Emil Baensch. Mr. Bloquelle has no blood relatives here but is survived by 3 sisters in Germany. He was a passionate hunter and in his first years here made many hunting trips with the Indians. Last winter he fell ill and remained so for a long time. It was hoped he would recover when Spring arrived, but that hope was unfulfilled and his illness recurred ending with his death Sunday afternoon… Mr. Bloquelle’s funeral was held yesterday afternoon under the auspices of the local post of the G.A.R. to which the deceased had belonged for many years. Six comrades from his company served as pallbearers: August Grosstueck, Henry Schmidt, Carl Fricke, Carl Werbke, Henry Schweitzer and Gottfried Krueger. ********* [bur. 04-16-1907/cause: obstruction of the bowels]
