DONALD J. BERO cemetery #89D Joint funeral services for Atty. Donald J. and Betty M. Bero of 3502 Parkway Blvd., Two Rivers, who were killed in an airplane crash at Milwaukee Saturday afternoon, will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Deja and Martin Funeral Chapels and at 11 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Two Rivers. The Rev. Paul Schumacher will officiate and burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Two Rivers. Mr. Bero was born Nov. 19, 1921, at Green Bay, son of the late Henry J. and Ida Frisque Bero. He attended a Green Bay parochial grade School and was graduated from St. Norbert College, DePere, and Marquette University Law School, Milwaukee. He married Betty M. O'Grady at Green Bay June 24, 1945, the couple moving to Two Rivers the same year. Mrs. Bero was born at Green Bay Dec. 6, 1921, daughter of the late John and Mary O'Grady. She was graduated from West Green Bay High School and from Marquette University, Milwaukee, with a bachelor of science degree in nursing. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) There will be visitation at the funeral chapels from 5 o'clock to 9 o'clock this Monday evening where memorial services will be at 8 o'clock. ROSE BERO cemetery #89D Mrs. Rose Bero, 79, of 3402 Tannery Rd., Two Rivers, died Wednesday evening at Two Rivers Community Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Two Rivers. The Rev. Robert Rhyner will officiate and burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Two Rivers. Mrs. Bero was born March 4, 1897, in the Town of Brussels, Door County, daughter of the late Alexander and Josephine Decker Flemal. She was married to William Bero Nov. 27, 1917, in the Town of Brussels. They resided in Two Rivers since 1929. She was a member of the Veterans Auxiliary, Senior Citizens and Ladies of Holy Redeemer Church. Survivors include her husband, a daughter, a son, Richard, a sister, Mrs. Alice Baker, of Escanaba, Mich., a brother, Alex Flemal, of Two Rivers, three grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a great great grandchild. Bero, 80, of 3400 Tannery Rd., Two Rivers, died Monday in Two Rivers. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Holy Redeemer Church, Two Rivers. The Rev. Paul Schumacher will officiate and burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Two Rivers. Mr. Bero was born July 30, 1898, in the Town of Red River, Kewaunee County, son of the late Jule and Mary Moreau Bero. He married Rosemary Flemal Nov. 27, 1917, in the Town of Brussels. She preceded him in death in May of 1976. He resided in Two Rivers since 1929, and was a farmer for 15 years until his retirement. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, a daughter, three sisters, Mrs. Mary Destree, of Green Bay, Mrs. Odile Destree, of Green Bay and Mrs. Clara Johnson, of Green Bay; three grandchildren; six great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Friends may call at Klein and Stangel Inc. Funeral Home after 5 p.m. Wednesday. A parish memorial service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and the Senior Citizens will meet at 6 p.m.


ELIZABETH BERRES cemetery #66 Mrs. Elizabeth Berres, 84, of Rt. 1, Denmark, Town of Gibson, died Saturday afternoon at Americana Nursing Home, Green Bay. Funeral sevices will be at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday at Klein & Stangel Inc., Funeral Home, Two Rivers, and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Tisch Mills, the Rev. Leonard Woelfel officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemtery. Mrs. Berres, nee Elizabeth Ederer, was born Jan. 4, 1887, at Edson, Wis., daughter of the late Frank and Savina Raunecker Ederer. She was married Oct. 15, 1907, at Edson to John Berres after which the couple settled on a farm in the Town of Gibson. Her husband preceded her in death June 1, 1957. She was a member of St. Mary Rosary Society. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Clarence Schulz, Miss Leona Berres and Mrs. Donald Henrickson of Two Rivers, Mrs. Helen Lins of Columbus, Wis., and Mrs. Paul Greene of Green Bay; six sons, Leonard of Rt.1, Denmark, Orman of Batavia, Ill., Cornelius of St. Nazianz, John of Madison, Joseph of Manitowoc and Raymond Berres of Rt. 2, Manitowoc; two sisters, Mrs Rose Thering of Spring Green, Wis., and Mrs. Anna Etten of Boyd, Wis.; a brother, Jack Ederer of Plain, Wis., 43 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren. CORNELIUS J. BERRES cemetery #21 Cornelius "Neil" Berres, age 91, of St. Nazianz, died at his winter residence in Crystal River, Fla., on Monday, Nov. 26, 2007. Mr. Berres was born on Dec. 3, 1915, in Boyd, son of the late John and Elizabeth (Ederer) Berres. He attended Twin Elders School in Two Creeks, and was a World War II Army veteran. He married Lucille Boury on June 5, 1948, at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Manitowoc. She preceded him in death on June 17, 1988. Mr. Berres retired as a self- employed carpenter. He was a member of St. Gregory's Catholic Church, St. Nazianz, and was also a past member of the St. Nazianz Village Board, St. Nazianz Lions Club, and Holy Name Society. He played saxophone for the 8 a.m. guitar Mass at St. Gregory's, and also at St. Benedict's and St. Scholastica's Catholic churches in Crystal River, Fla. Mr. Berres was also a past member of the St. Mary's Prayer Group. Neil loved being with his family, playing cards with family and friends, playing his saxophone and harmonica, and traveling to Florida for the winters. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) He is preceded in death by his wife: Lucille Berres; a son: Stephen; daughter: Mary Jane; grandson: Jordan Berres; his parents; five brothers; and five sisters. Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 7, 2007, at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Randy Budnar, a nephew to Neil. Cremation has taken place, and a private committal service of the cremated remains will be held at a later date at St. Gregory Church Cemetery, St. Nazianz. The family will greet relatives and friends at St. Gregory Catholic Church on Friday, Dec. 7, 2007, from 3 p.m. until the time of Mass at 5 p.m. The Christianson & Deja Funeral Home and Cremation Care Center, Valders, is assisting the family locally with funeral arrangements. SR. M. CRECENTIA BERTELS cemetery #46 Sister M. Crescentia Bertels, 84, of Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc, died Saturday at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Monday at the Holy Family Convent Chapel. The Rev. F.F. Dupont, O. Praem, will officiate and burial will be in the convent cemetery. Sister M. Crescentia, nee Mary Bertels, was born June 11, 1887, at Verlas, Germany, daughter of the late Joseph and Catherine Krampe Bertels. She joined the Order of Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity Oct. 7, 1912, and professed her vows Aug. 12, 1915. Sister M. Crescentia had served at St. Boniface Convent, Manitowoc, as a homemaker for seven years and also worked in the Holy Family convent kitchen. Survivors include a brother, Herrn, a sister, Mrs. Ann Hillebrandt of Westphalia, Germany. Friends may call at the convent chapel Sunday afternoon and evening and Monday morning prior to the funeral. JULIUS BERTH cemetery #82 Julius Berth Dies Sunday at His Home Kiel – Julius F. H. Berth, 80, of 612 Paine street, this city, died at his home here Sunday at 1 p.m. He had been ill for several months. The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Berth, he was born in town Sheboygan Falls on December 7, 1862, where he grew to manhood and where he attended the schools in the township. His marriage to Miss Mary Krieger of the town of Herman, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Krieger, was solemnized on February 9, 1899, on the homestead farm of Mrs. Berth’s parents in that township. The ceremony was performed by the late Rev. Martin Denninger, then resident pastor of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran church of Louis Corners. Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Berth purchased a farm in the town of Schleswig near Louis Corners which they disposed of in 1904 to Edward Breckheimer. They then moved to Kiel and have resided here since. Their farm is now owned and operated by the Theodore Voigt family. Survivors are his wife; three children, Mrs. Edwin (Adelia) Stecker and Elmer Berth, present mayor of Kiel, and Mrs. August (Erna) Hingiss of Chilton; 15 grand- children; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Annie Alten of Plymouth. One child died in infancy and a son, Edwin, of Kiel, died May 11, 1941, at the age of 51. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Meiselwitz Funeral home with the Rev. C. B. Phipps, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of Manitowoc officiating. Burial will be made in the Kiel city cemetery. Phipps of Manitowoc officiated at the services and interment was made in the Kiel cemetery on the family lot. Pallbearers were six grandsons of the deceased: Harold Schaff, Harold Hansen, Willard, Elmer and Earl Stecker and Robert Berth. Relatives and friends from Black Creek, Philadelphia, Pa., Sturgeon Bay, Sheboygan, Sheboygan Falls, Millersville, Howards Grove, Plymouth, Chilton, Manitowoc, Hilbert and New River, N.C. attended the services. MARY BERTH cemetery #82 Mrs. Julius Berth, aged 76, died Monday afternoon at her home at 612 Paine Street, following a lingering illness. Mr. Berth preceded her in death September 5, 1943. The deceased, born Mary Krieger, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Krieger, was born at Prenclau, Uckermark, Germany on September 15, 1868. She came to America with her parents in December, 1869, and they settled on a farm in the town of Herman. She was married to Julius Berth, a native of Sheboygan Falls, on February 9, 1889, by the Rev. Martin Denninger, pastor of the Zion Lutheran Church at Louis Corners. Following their marriage they located on a farm in the town of Schleswig, near Louis Corners until 1904, when they moved to this city. In February, 1938, they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Edwin (Adelia) Stecker, who with her family have been residing with Mrs. Berth and caring for her, and Mrs. August (Erna) Hingiss of Chilton; one son, Elmer of Racine; 15 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 4 sisters, Mrs. Robert Voland of this city, Mrs. John Kasten of Rockville, Mrs. Frieda Brown of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, and Mrs. John Burkhardt of Fort Atkinson, and 2 brothers, Ferdinand of Hilbert, and Julius of this city. ANDREAS BERTLER cemetery #43 From Der Nord Westen, 11 Apr. 1895: Death on Tues. of Mr. Andreas Bertler, a well-known resident of our city, as a result of a stroke suffered on Sun. He was born 10 Sept. 1820 in the Kingdom of Württemberg. He leaves his widow and 3 grown children. The funeral will take place tomorrow, Fri., at 10:30 a.m. at the local Catholic Cemetery.


ELIZABETH BERTLER cemetery #43 From Der Nord Westen, 23 May 1907: Death Monday of 88-year old Mrs. Andrew Bertler of old age debility in the residence of her daughter here, Mrs. Albert Handl. The lady had been ill ever since the accidental death of her son, Stephen Bertler, about 6 weeks ago. She is survived by 2 daughters. The funeral will be held this morning from St. Boniface Church.


HELENA BERTLER cemetery #43 From Der Nord Westen, 24 Dec. 1891: Death on Mon. of Mrs. Helene Bertler, wife of the well-known brickworks manager, Stephan Bertler. The deceased passed away from inflammation of the lower abdomen, but had suffered for some time with neuritis, of which her husband is still suffering as well as one child. Mrs. Bertler was 40 yrs. of age and was born in Town Meeme, the daughter of the late farmer Gittinger. She leaves her husband and 4 children. The burial took place Wed. morning at the local Catholic cemetery.


JOHN A. BERTLER cemetery #44 John A. Bertler, 93, of 820 N. Sixth St., Manitowoc, died Saturday morning at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Charles Mocco will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mr. Bertler was born Oct. 18, 1879, at Manitowoc, son of the late Steven and Ellen Bertler. He attended St. Boniface School and North Side High School, Manitowoc. After graduation, he joined his father and two brothers in the operation of S. Bertler & Sons Brick Mfg. Co., retiring in 1950. He married Emily Drause May 8, 1901, at Manitowoc. He was an avid baseball fan and played with the Manitowoc City Team from 1896 to 1907. His wife preceded him in death in October of 1953. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Farris (Eleanore) Kienzler and Mrs. John (Helene) Musiel, of Manitowoc; nieces and nephews. STEPHEN BERTLER cemetery #43 From Der Nord Westen, 04 Apr. 1907: Steven Bertler, well-known brick maker, on Monday morning had the misfortune of falling 30-feet from his brick oven, suffering wounds to his head and face. The doctors fear that some of his injuries are internal, and they are as yet undetermined… His condition is critical. ******** From Der Nord Westen, 18 Apr. 1907: Stephan Bertler, who we recently reported having fallen Easter Monday from a brick kiln in his brickyard, died Thursday last week from the injuries suffered in that fall. The injured man had somewhat improved and it was hoped that he would recover, so his death was unexpected. Stephan Bertler was born 53 years ago in Milwaukee but moved here a long time ago and for the past 25 years operated the brickyard which his father had established. He leaves a widow and 6 children. The funeral was held Monday morning from St. Boniface Church.

ANNA BERTSCHE cemetery #60 Mrs. Anna Bertsche, 77, widow of John Bertsche, and a resident of the Anna M. Reiss Home for 12 years, died Wednesday morning at St. Nicholas Hospital. Mrs. Bertsche had been in failing health since suffering a stroke the past July. She was born in the town of Centerville, Manitowoc County, on Jan. 20, 1876, a daughter of the late Carl and Katherine Schaller. She attended the St. Wendel Catholic School and was married to John Bertsche of Osman at St. Wendel Church on Jan. 25, 1898 by the late Father Deshall. After marriage the couple took up farming in the Town of Meeme, living there until 1941 when they moved to Sheboygan. Mr. Bertsche died here in 1943. Mrs. Bertsche was a lifelong member of St. Isadore Catholic Church, Osman, and of the Rosary Society of the parish. In Sheboygan she belonged to the Third Order of St. Francis and the Mission Society of Holy Name Parish. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Walter (Agnes) Miller, Osman, and Mrs. Peter (Mildred) Nennig, Sheboygan; two sons, John, Kiel, and Sylvester, on the home farm; two step-sons, Josepth Bertsche, Milwaukee, and William Bertsche, Osman; 15 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Rock, Manitowoc; and one brother, Jacob Schaller, Sheboygan. She was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister. Services will be held at the Robert H. Kroos Funeral home here at 9 a.m. Saturday and at 10 o'clock at St. Isadore Church, Osman, with Father John Baum celebrant of the requiem high funeral mass. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home here from 7 o'clock this evening. The Third Order of St. Francis and the Mission Society of Holy Name Parish will recite the rosary at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Friday, with Father Harold Petronis leading the prayers. JOHN L. BERTSCHE cemetery #60 Funeral services for John L. Bertsche, 83, former town Meeme resident who passed away at the Anna M. Reiss home Friday morning will be held Monday at 8:45 a.m. at the Nennig Funeral home at St. Wendel and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Isadore's church at Osman. Father Edward Wagner will officiate. ARTHUR BERTSCHY cemetery #90 Mr. Bertschy was born in the Town of Meeme, Feb. 21, 1894, a son of the late Jacob and Mary Bertschy. He was confirmed in St. Johns Church, of which he was a member. He married Hattie Schumacher, April 2, 1916, in the Town of Sheboygan Falls. The couple observed their golden wedding anniversary this year. They engaged in farming until 1947 when they retired and moved to Sheboygan. Since then Mr. Bertschy had been employed by Lakeside Packing Co. until two years ago. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Milton Damrow (LaVerna), Sheboygan, and Mrs. Melvin Henrickson (Bernice), Des Plaines, Ill., seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. JACOB BERTSCHY (d. 1929) cemetery #90 Jacob Bertschy, aged 73, died Sunday at his home in the village of Howards Grove following an illness since a week ago Saturday. The funeral will be held at St. Johannes Church, Schwartzwald, the Rev. Fr. Mohme conducting the services. Deceased was born January 16, 1856, in the town of Meeme, In 1884 he married Miss Mary Maurer, and the couple with their children lived on a farm in that township until nine years back, when they retired from farming and moved to Howards Grove. The survivors are the widow; three son, Alvin and Arthur town of Meeme and Edwin at home; two sisters, Mrs. Robert Rhein of Plymouth and Mrs. Herman Hensche of Racine, and one brother, John C. of Sheboygan. MARY BERTSCHY cemetery #90 Howards Grove—Mrs. Maria Anna Bertschy, 79, wife of the late Jacob Bertschy, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Mauer, died at Howards Grove today following a lingering illness. Funeral services will be held at the St. Johannes Evangelical church at Schwartzwald. Burial will be made in the Church cemetery and the Rev. William Schultz will officiate. She was born February 4, 1858 in the town of Herman, and on December 11, 1883, was married to Mr. Bertschy. They located on a farm in the town of Meeme. For the past 19 years she had led a retired life in Howard Grove. Her husband preceded her in death January 10, 1929. Three surviving children are Alvin and Arthur of the town of Meeme, and Ed of the town of Herman. There are eight grandchildren. She was a faithful member of the St. Johannes Evangelical church and always a kind and loving mother devoted to her family. Sheboygan Press, June 7, 1937

ESTHER BESSERT cemetery #76 Mrs. Otto Bessert, 74, of Rt. 1, Reedsville, died unexpectedly Thursday evening at home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. John and St. James Lutheran Church, Reedsville. The Rev. Harlyn Kuschel will officiate and burial will be in the Westside Church Cemetery. Mrs. Bessert, nee Esther Krepline, was born Aug. 20, 1897, in the Town of Rockland, daughter of the late Louis and Hulda Mahnke Krepline. She was married to Otto Bessert March 1, 1917, at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, Collins. They farmed in the Town of Rockland. Her husband preceded her in death Sept. 6, 1956. Survivors include a son, Harry, of Rt. 1, Reedsville; three daughters Louise and Adeline, at home, and Mrs. Clarence (Ella) Luedtke, of Rt. 1, Reedsville; a sister, Mrs. Bernard Reinke, of Collins, and four grandchildren. A. BEN BESSLER cemetery #82 A. Ben Bessler, 72, 227 Fremont St., Kiel, former city treasurer and city assessor of Kiel, died Thursday noon at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient for one week. Mr. Bessler was born on Jan. 17, 1891, at Wanatah, Ind., the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Emil Bessler, came to Kiel in 1915, and was associated with Hingiss and Bessler Auto and Implement firm until his retirement in 1946. On July 1, 1919, he married Miss Linda Hingiss of Kiel. A veteran of World War I, Mr. Bessler served as an engineer with the American Expedition forces overseas. He is a member of the Tri-County Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also is a past secretary and member of the Kiel Chamber of Commerce, a former post commander and member of the Kasper Beckly American Legion post. Mr. Bessler had served on the Kiel Board of Education and was its treasurer for nine years. He was city assessor from 1949 to 1963 and city treasurer from 1955 to 1963, terminating both positions in May of this year. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Mrs. Lorn (Lynda) Pracht of Phillips, Wis.; three grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Edward Collins of Minneapolis, Minn. And Mrs. Linda Ortloff of St. Paul, Minn., and a brother, Albert Bessler of LaCrosse, Ind. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel, the Rev. Allen L. Bowe, pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Kiel, officiating. Burial will be in the Kiel Cemetery with the joint Legion and VFW posts conducting graveside military rites. LINDA BESSLER cemetery #82 Linda E. Bessler, 83 of 227 Fremont Street, Kiel, died June 5, at New Richmond, where she had been residing with her daughter. The former Linda Hingiss was born October 4, 1896, in Cleveland, daughter of August and Augusta Fischer Hingiss. She attended district schools. Her marriage to Ben Bessler took place on July 1, 1919. The couple settled in Kiel where they resided their entire married lives. Mr. Bessler died in 1963. Mrs. Bessler was a member of the Kiel Senior Citizens, Kiel Historical Society, Frauen Verein and a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Lorn Pracht of New Richmond; a brother, Alfred Hingiss of Kiel; two sisters, Mrs. Esther Towers of Chilton, and Mrs. Em Sommers of Madison; and three grandchildren. ANNA M. BEST cemetery #84 Plymouth—Mrs. Mary Best, the widow of Peter Best for 28 years died in Neillsville by her granddaughter, Mrs. Herman Eberhardt where she was visiting. She was born In Hessen, Darmstadt on October 8th, 1821 and she reached the age of 81 years, 10 months and 14 days. She was married in Germany with Peter Best and they came to America where they operated a farm in Town Schleswig for many years. She leaves the following children; Mrs. John Frick of Plymouth; Mrs. August Luellof of Hilbert; Mrs. William Hartmann of Thea, South Dakota; Louis Best of Souix Falls, South Dakota and Carl Best on the home farm in Town Schleswig; also 20 grandchildren and 5 great grand- children. Death was due to the infirmities of old age. Decedent was born in Dheinheim, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany, Sept. 16, 1844 and came to America in 1853 with his parents, who settled in the town of Rhine near the Sheboygan river. Two years later his father, Peter Best, purchased 120 acres of fine farming land in the town of Schleswig, two miles south-east of Kiel, which later became the property of the son Carl, who resided on the place until his death. He was married in 1876 to Louise Meyer, who survives him, with two sons and two daughters, namely, Louis of Kiel and Carl on the old homestead, Mrs. Ph. Mattes of Thorp and Mrs. Wm. Voss of Kiel. He also leaves nine grandchildren, one brother, Louis, of Sioux Falls, Dak., and two sisters, Mrs. Kate Hartmann of Sioux Falls, S. D. and Mrs. Susanna Frick, of Milwaukee. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon interment being in the Rockville cemetery. Rev. W. Rech officiated. - Jan. 5, 1922


LEONA ELLA BEST cemetery #84 Suffering from inflammatory rheumatism, followed by a heart attack, Miss Leona Ella Best, ten—year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Best, who reside on a farm about two miles southeast of Kiel, passed away at 7:30 Sunday morning at her home. She attended the Kiel public school, and was a member of the fourth grade class. She also attended the St. Peter Reformed church Sunday school. She is survived by her parents and four sisters, Lillian, Martha, Emma and Madeline, all at home. She was born October 12, 1921. Funeral services were held at 1:30 from the home, and at 2 o’clock at the St. Peter Reformed church. The Mendelssohn Choir sang “Jesus Lover of My Soul,” and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus," and the Sunday school class sang "Jesus Loves Me." Her fourth grade classmates attended the services in a body. Pallbearers were: Elmer Stecker, Manfred Moritz, Ralph Eickert and Lester Vogel. Interment was in the Rockville cemetery, with the Rev. E. L. Worthman conducting the last rites. (no newspaper named, 2-20-1932) ******* KIEL GIRL IS STRICKEN WITH HEART ATTACK A heart attack suffered while convalescing from rheumatism shortly after 7 o'clock last night claimed the life of 10 year old Leona, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Best of Kiel. The child had been ill for only a week. She was born in the city of Kiel on October 12, 1921 and was a student in the public schools of that city until illness forced her to give up her studies. Besides her parents she is survived by four sisters, Lillian, Martha, Emma and Adeline. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the St. Peter's Reformed church at Kiel and interment will take place at Brockville. LOUIE BEST cemetery #84 Louie A. Best, 84, of Park Avenue, Kiel, died August 23, at Calumet Memorial Hospital, Chilton, where he had been a patient for two days. He was born March 14, 1893, in the Town of Schleswig, a son of Carl and Louise Meyer Best. He attended Kiel schools and was a veteran of World War I, serving with Battery E, 327th Field Artillery, from July, 1918, to February, 1919. In 1923, he moved to Thorp where he purchased a farm which he operated until 1942, when he moved to Appleton where he was employed at a paper mill. He retired in 1958 and moved to Kiel. On May 16, 1944, he married the former Blanche Joan Williams at Waukegan, Illinois. Survivors include his widow. (rest missing) - 1977


RENATA BEST cemetery #84 Mrs. Carl Best, 61, Elkhart Lake, died early this morning at Plymouth Hospital where she had been a patient for the last month. Born Renata Neumann on Sept. 10, 1893, in the town of Herman, she was the daughter of the late Christ and Bertha Neumann. She was married to Carl Best on Nov. 27, 1915, in the town of Herman Lutheran Church. The couple lived on the Best homestead in the town of Schleswig until 1932, at which time they moved to Elkhart Lake. She was a member of Senior Guild of Community Evangelical and Reformed Church. Services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at Community Evangelical and Reformed Church. The Rev. Paul Olm will offiicate and burial will be in Rockville cemetery. Friends may call at the Rader Funeral home, Elkhart Lake, from Wednesday noon on until 11 o'clock Thursday morning and then from noon until time of services at the church. ANGELINE BETH IS TAKEN IN CITY MONDAY Widow of Fred Beth, Sr., Invalid 25 Years, Claimed, Rites Thursday Mrs. Angeline Beth, 85, lifelong resident of Two Rivers, and widow of Fred Beth, Sr., died at the Municipal hospital at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon, following 25 years spent in a wheelchair as an invalid. Mrs. Beth suffered a stroke three months ago and had been a patient at the hospital for the past five weeks. Funeral Thursday Funeral services will be held from St. Lukes Catholic church Thursday morning at 9 o'clock at which time four of her nephews, all priests, will join in the celebration of a solemn, requiem high mass. The celebrant will be Rev. George Beth of Black Creek; Rev. Peter Nilles of St. Mark's will be deacon; Rev. Horace Schroeder of Appleton, sub-deacon, and Rev. Hubert Nilles of Oshkosh, master of ceremonies. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery. The body is at the Beduhn Funeral home and may be viewed there from Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The rosary will be recited at the funeral home at 7:45 Wednesday evening. Nee Angeline Wolf, Mrs. Beth was born in this city Dec. 3, 1860, the daughter of Michael and Isabelle Silversack Wolf. As a girl she attended St. Luke's parochial school and was married to Fred Beth at St. Luke's Sept. 12, 1882. A year following their marriage the couple built a home at 1817 Washington street (across from the Rivoli theater), where they made their home until Mr. Beth's death in December, 1929. Mrs. Beth continued to live there until her removal to the hospital five weeks ago. Mr. Beth was a member of Two Rivers' first baseball team, the Centennials, and was a teammate of the late Sen. Thomas Walsh. Mrs. Beth was a member of the Altar society of St. Luke's congregation. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Isabelle) Hess and Miss Connie Beth, both of this city, and four grandchildren. FRED BETH, JR. cemetery #89B Fred J. Beth, 61, of 1409 22nd street, Two Rivers, an employe of Schroeder Brothers Company for nearly 40 years, and a guard at the Paragon Electric Company for the past two years, died at the Two Rivers Municipal hospital this morning where he had been a patient since last Wednesday. Beth was born in Two Rivers on July 12, 1883, a son of Fred Beth Sr. and Angeline Wolfe Beth. His mother, an invalid for the past 25 years, resides in Two Rivers. After receiving his education at St. Luke's Catholic school, Fred Beth, at 14 years of age, took employment at the old Mann Brothers saw mill where he served for a year before accepting work at the Schroeder Brothers company in 1898. He worked at the Schroeder store until 1907 when he established a grocery business at the site now occupied by the Stangel Twins grocery on 19th street. Fred Beth continued in the grocery business for five years and then returned to the employ of the Schroeder Brothers company in 1913 where he worked continuously until 1942, leaving the firm to become a guard at the Paragon Electric company in July of that year. He was an early member of the St. Joseph's Athletic association and played in the St. Joe band for a number of years. He was also one of Two Rivers earliest basketball officials, officiating in many games for the old St. Joseph's Athletic association and other local teams shortly after the turn of the century. In late years, while at the Schroeder store, Mr. Beth was in charge of the rug and paint department. Besides the widow, he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Angeline Beth of Two Rivers; two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth Nash of Milwaukee and Miss Evelyn at home and two sisters, Mrs. Prank Hess and Miss Connie Beth, both of Two Rivers. The body was removed to the Beduhn Funeral Home, Two Rivers, where it will remain pending arrangements for the funeral. Complete plans for the burial will be announced tomorrow. GEORGE F. BETH, REV. cemetery #89B REV. BETH'S FUNERAL IS SATURDAY The Rev. George F. Beth, 68, a native of Two Rivers, who served Catholic parishes at Mishicot and Two Rivers for more than 23 years of his some 40 years in the priesthood, died Thursday morning at New London where he was pastor of Most Precious Blood Church. He had been failing in health for several months. Funeral services will be at Most Precious Blood Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, Bishop Aloysius J. Wycislo of Green Bay Diocese with other priests in the diocese serving as concelebrants. Burial will be at a later date in the family plot in Calvary Cemetery, Two Rivers. Father Beth was born April 11, 1905, at Two Rivers, a son of the late Peter and Catherine Schroeder Beth. He attended St. Luke Parochial School at Two Rivers and then entered St. Norbert High School and college at DePere. He completed his course in theology along with his boyhood friend, the late Rev. Henry Schmitt of Two Rivers, at St. Francis Seminary, St. Francis, Wis. Familiarly known as "Red", among his Two Rivers friends, he played amateur basketball at Two Rivers during his years of studying for the priesthood. He was ordained with the late Father Henry Schmitt May 3, 1930, by the late Bishop Paul P. Rohde and the pair held their first Mass at their home parish, St. Luke at Two Rivers. Father Beth's first assignment was as assistant at St. Mark Church at Two Rivers. He was assigned as assistant at Holy Name, Kimberly, Sept. 16, 1930 and Sept. 27, 1932 became assistant at St. John, Antigo. His first pastorate was at St. Joseph Church, Crandon, with missions at Argonne and Hiles, assigned July 7, 1933. On Jan. 22, 1938 he became pastor St. Mary Church, Black Creek, with missions at Shiocton and Navarino. He then was assigned as pastor of Holy Cross Church, Mishicot, Feb. 22, 1946, where he directed the construction of a new school and parish hall. On Nov. 12, 1958, he took over the pastorate of St. Mark Church at Two Rivers where he remained for 12 years. He still served as pastor of Most Precious Blood Church at New London despite his lingering illness, since 1966. He was a past dean of the New London Deanery and a member of Father Herb Council No. 1792, Knights of Columbus, of New London. No immediate members of the family survive Father Beth, except for a number of nieces and nephews. She attended Tannery School, St. John's Parochial School and Washington High School, graduating with the class of 1932. On April 19, 1933, she married Walter Beth in Two Rivers. The couple celebrated 66 years of marriage last April. She was employed at Two Rivers Community Hospital, City Cab, and Paragon Electric Co. retiring in 1968. She is a member of St. John's Ladies Society afternoon and evening group and the dartball league. She is also a member of the Two Rivers Senior Center. WALTER M. BETH cemetery #89A Walter M. Beth, age 91, of Two Rivers, died peacefully Thursday afternoon, Nov. 25, 2004 following a brief illness at the Hamilton Memorial Home, Two Rivers. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 29, 2004 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Two Rivers. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. David Scherbarth, with burial to follow in Pioneer Rest Cemetery, Two Rivers. Walter was born Sept. 16, 1913 in Two Rivers, a son of the late Charles and Barbara Monka Beth. He received his education in Two Rivers, attending St. Mark's Parochial School and graduating from Washington High School with the class of 1931. On April 19, 1933, he was married to Ramona B. Raatz at St. John's Lutheran Church, Two Rivers. The couple was blessed with 66 years together. She preceded him in death Oct. 14, 1999. Wally was employed at Mirro Aluminum Co. for many years and also at the Manitowoc Shipbuilding for a short time during the war. He retired from Mirro Aluminum in 1978, as assistant superintendent. He was a long time member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where he was past member of the church council, served as trustee and was a member of the Lutheran Men's Club. He was also a member of the National Management Club of Mirro; the Two Rivers Senior Center, where he served with the Meals-on-Wheels program; and he enjoyed bowling, dartball and playing cards with several card clubs. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, two daughters and a son-in-law, eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, seveial nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, a brother, and three sisters. DANIEL BETHKE cemetery #77 Daniel Bethke, 73, former Reedsville resident, died unexpectedly of a heart attack Sunday morning while on his way to church in the Town of Morrison, Brown County. Funeral services will be at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at Reedsville Funeral Home and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Reedsville. The Rev. William Koutnik officiated and burial was in the church cemetery. Mr. Bethke was born Nov. 9, 1886, in the Town of Maple Grove, Manitowoc county, son of the late Peter and Catherine Pieschel Bethke. He never married and two years ago went to live with a brother, Peter, in the Town of Morrison. He was a member of Holy Name Society of St. Mary Church. Surviving are two brothers, Peter of Morrison and Michael of Sherwood; and two sisters, Miss Julia Bethke and Mrs. Steve Spatchek of Reedsville. A brother William, died in February of this year. FRED BETHKE cemetery #82 Frederick Bethke, aged 63, well-known resident of Kiel, passed away suddenly of a heart attack at his home on Seventh Street Monday afternoon. The deceased, the son of the late Christian and Emma Bethke, was born in Johnsonville on September 22, 1872, where he grew to manhood. He was married to Miss Mary Matter of Plymouth on March 7, 1903. Mr. and Mrs. Bethke located in Rantoul where they resided a number of years, later moving to the town of Rhine. For the past 30 years they have lived in Kiel. Three children were born to the couple; of these a son passed away in infancy and a daughter at the age of 13 months. Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Elmer (Adeline) Schilling of Sheboygan; two granddaughters, Helen and Harriet Schilling; one brother, William Bethke of here; and two sisters, Mrs. Ida Adermann of Plymouth and Mrs. Frank Dawurske of here. Arthur Beebe of DePere, a son of Mrs. Caroline Beebe formerly of Kiel, who made his home with the Bethkes for 11 years, is now attending St. Norbert’s High School at DePere. For the past 30 years Mr. Bethke had held the position of foreman at the Kiel Wooden Ware Co plant. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen Lodge and of the St. Peter Evangelical and Reformed church of this city. Funeral services were to be held from the family residence and at the St. Peter Evangelical and Reformed church. The Rev. E. L. Worthman, pastor of the church, and the Rev. Otto Saewert of Elkhart Lake will officiate and burial will be made in the Kiel cemetery. (No newspaper named, 1936)


MARY BETHKE cemetery #82 Mrs. Mary Bethke, 66, former Kiel resident, died yesterday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Elmer Schilling at Sheboygan. She had been in ill health several years. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Ballhorn funeral home in Sheboygan. Burial will be at Kiel. Born in 1875 at East Waldo, Sheboygan county, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Matter, her parents died when she was a girl of 10 years and she made her home with a sister in Plymouth. In 1903 she was married to Fred Bethke and they made their home in Kiel until Mr. Bethke died in 1936. She has since made her home with her daugher. WILLIAM BETHKE cemetery #82 Funeral services for William C. Bethke, 75, were at Trinity Lutheran church with burial in the Kiel Cemetery. He was employed as a machinist at the Kiel Wooden Ware Co. for 47 years before his retirement six years ago. He was born in the town of Rantoul, Calumet county, July 13, 1880, the son of the late Christian and Minnie Neuman Bethke. He attended district school in the town of Rhine and graduated from the Glenbeulah high school in June, 1900. August 8, 1909, he was married to Miss Anna Ebelt of Adell, and the couple located in Kiel. Survivors are his wife and a sister, Mrs. Ida Aderman of Plymouth. He was preceded in death by five sisters and one brother. No newspaper named, March 19, 1956


KENNETH BETTACK cemetery #82 Kenneth Bettack, 44, of 624 St. Paul Street, Kiel, died unexpectedly at his home early Tuesday. Death was attributed to an apparent heart attack He was born November 23, 1934, in Langlade County, a son of Edward and Edrie Holup Bettack. He graduated from Antigo High School in 1952. On December 29, 1956, he married the former Virgel Doucette at Peace Lutheran Church, Antigo. They resided in Antigo and Milwaukee before moving to Kiel in 1962. He was employed at the Lauson Engine Division of Tecumseh Products Company, New Holstein. Mr. Bettack was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving from 1952 to 1956. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Kiel. Survivors include his wife; five daughters, and Mrs. Russell Grunewald, Kiel; three sons, a grandson; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Bettack, Antigo, and two sisters. HARVEY BETTERTON cemetery #44 Harvey Betterton Ousley, 84, of Charlotte, N.C., who had spent several summers in Manitowoc, died Friday at Charlotte. Funeral services were Saturday at Charlotte and burial at a later date will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mr. Ousley was born March 16, 1880, at Temberhill, Ohio, and had been engaged in road construction work before his retirement. He married the former Harriet Kress of Manitowoc, who died last June. ANNE J. BEUMLER cemetery #83 Miss Beumler of Kiel Is Summoned after an Illness. Kiel -(Special)- Miss Anna Beumler, 28, died early this morning in Wisconsin General hospital, Madison, where she had been a patient since last fall. She was born in the town of New Holstein, May 4, 1911, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Beumler. The family moved to a farm on Highway 32 east of Kiel, and Miss Beumler attended a parochial school here. She is survived by her parents, one brother, Joseph, and three sisters, Mrs. Lester Jugenheimer, Mrs. Ellsworth Gross, and Mrs. Clifford Heus, all of Kiel. A brother, William, and a sister, Loretta, preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock at the Meiselwitz Funeral home here, and at 9:30 at St. Peter and Paul Catholic church. The Rev. Fr. J.J. Esdepsky will officiate and interment will be in the Catholic cemetery near here. Friends may view the body at the funeral home from Sunday evening until time of services. Sheboygan Press, Sat. ANTON BEUMLER cemetery #83 Rites Held Saturday For Anton Beumler Funeral services were held Saturday morning for Anton Beumler, 84, who died at his home Wednesday afternoon. He had been ill but a short time The Rev. F.X. Kheil celebrated the requiem mass and burial was made in the parish cemetery. (pallbearers named) Mr. Beumler was born in the town of Lima, Sheboygan county, March 14, 1872, the son of the late Mathias and Pentronella Weiers Beumler. He married Johanna Vande Loo, town of Lima, June 12, 1906, at St. George Catholic church near Sheboygan Falls and the couple farmed for 40 years near Kiel. They moved to this city on retirement 12 years ago. Surviving him are his wife; a son, three daughters, 20 grand- children and five great-grandchildren. JOSEPH J. BEUMLER cemetery #83 Joseph J. Beumler, 61, of R. 2, Kiel, died Tuesday evening at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital. He had been admitted to the hospital a day earlier. A retired farmer, he was born May 11, 1908, at Six Corners, Town of Wilson, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Anton Beumler. The family later moved to the Town of Schleswig. On May 16, 1931, he was married to Irene Seichter of Charlesburg at St. Charles Catholic Church. They operated a farm east of Kiel until 4 1/2 years ago. Since then he had been employed at Kiel Foundry. He was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Kiel, the Holy Name Society and Kiel Fish and Game Club. Surviving are his wife and nine daughters, 16 grandchildren and three sisters, Mrs. Lester Jugenheimer, Kiel, Mrs. Clifford Heus, St. Anna, and Mrs. Ellsworth Gross, Sheboygan Falls. Services will be at 10 a.m Friday at Ss. Peter and Paul Chruch with the Rev. George Kiefer pastor, celebrant of the funeral Mass. Brief rites will be held at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel, at 9:30. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m Thursday. JOHANNA BEUMLER cemetery #83 Mrs. Johanna Beumler, 79, of R. 2, Kiel, widow of Anton, died at 3 p.m. Sunday in St. Nicholas Hospital. She had been hospitalized since last Wednesday. The former Johanna VandeLoo, was born in the Town of Lima, Feb. 28, 1886, a daughter of the late Peter and Magdalene VandeLoo. Her marriage to Mr. Beumler took place at St. George's Catholic Church, Six Corners, June 12, 1906. The couple farmed in the Town of Schleswig until 1944 when they retired and moved to Kiel. Since the death of her husband in April, 1956, she had been living with her children. She was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Parish, Kiel, and its Christian Mothers Society. Surviving are a son, Joseph, on the home Schleswig farm, R. 2, Kiel; three daughters, Mrs. Lester (Marie) Jugenheimer, R. 2, Kiel, Mrs. Ellsworth (Angeline) Gross, Sheboygan Falls, and Mrs. Clifford (Dorothy) Heus, St. Anna; 21 grandchildren and 24 great- grandchildren. A son and two daughters preceded her in death. The requiem Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Ss. Peter and Paul Church, Kiel, with the Rev. George Kiefer, pastor, celebrant. Mass will follow 9 o'clock family rites at the Mesielwitz Funeral Home in Kiel. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Tuesday. LORETTA BEUMLER cemetery #83 Miss Beumler of Kiel Passes Away Tuesday Evening. Kiel. -Miss Loretta Beumler, aged 18, died at ten o'clock Tuesday evening at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Beumler, who live near Kiel. Her early death, which came as a great shock to the family, is being mourned by many friends. Although Miss Beumler had been in ill health for the past few months, her condition was not regarded critical. Miss Beumler was born in the Town of Schleswig January 4, 1913. She attended the parochial school at Kiel and later stayed at home. Besides her parents, she is survived by a brother, Joseph, four sisters, Anna, Angeline and Dorothea, at home, and Mrs. Lester Jugenheimer, Kiel. One brother, William, preceded his sister in death ten months ago. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 9 o'clock at the Beumler home near Kiel and at 9:30 o'clock at the St. Peter and St. Paul Catholic church. The Rev. A.A. Kiel. -(Special) William Beumler, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Beumler, residing one mile east of here, died at 6:30 p.m. Thursday after an illness of two (weeks?) duration. The deceased was born in Town of Lima, near Sheboygan Falls, March 13, 1908, and attended the (?) school of this city. He was a member of the HOly Name society of St. Peter and Paul Catholic church. Survivors are his parents, one brother an five sisters. Funeral services will be held at the home Monday at 9:30 a.m. and at St. Peter and Paul church here at 10 a.m., with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. A. Roder will officiate. CLARENCE "RED" BEVER cemetery #89C Clarence Red Bever 69 of Two Rivers died Thursday, Sept. 3, at Two Rivers Community Hospital. Funeral services will be 10 am. Mr. Bever was born June 8, 1912, at Marshfield, son of the late Arnold and Mayme Beine Bever. He married Evelyn Natzke Nov. 10, 1939, at Two Rivers. Mr. Bever was employed by Paragon Electric Company for 37 years, retiring nine years ago. He was a member of Senior Citizens, Eagles Club, and Men of St. Luke. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn, nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers- in-law. He was preceded in death by two brothers. EVELYN V. BEVER cemetery #89C Evelyn V. Bever, 74, of Two Rivers, died Wednesday morning, December 9, 1987 at Two Rivers Community Hospital. Mrs. Bever was born August 9, 1913, at Wayside, Wisconsin, daughter of the late Bernard and Emma Copelle Natzke, She married Clarence Bever on November 10, 1939 at Two Rivers. He preceded her in death September 3, 1981. Mrs. Bever waz employed at Muellers Delica-Sea for many years and following her retirement she worked for Two Rivers Senior Center. Survivors include a niece, with whom she made her home with and many other nieces and nephews survive. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Cora Loppnow, Loleta Rose, Laura Stradel and Lovella Tisler. LEAFY E. BEYER cemetery #44 Leafy E. Beyer, age 98, a resident of Shady Lane Nursing Care Center, died Saturday morning, Dec. 15, 2007, at Shady Lane. The former Leafy Halverson was born Feb. 22, 1909, in Swanson, Mich., daughter of the late Herman and Myrtle Clewley Halverson. She grew up in Shawano and graduated from high school in Shawano. On May 1, 1928, Leafy was married to Irvin Beyer in Shawano. The couple moved to Manitowoc in 1950 and Irvin preceded her in death on June 30, 1958. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son: Lyn Beyer; one daughter-in-law: Miki Beyer; two grandchildren, two brothers and one sister. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2007, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 411 Reed Ave., Manitowoc. The Rev. Thomas J. Dunham will officiate with burial to follow at the Evergreen Cemetery. BARBARE BEYSAR cemetery #43 STRICKEN AS SHE PREPARES MORNING MEAL Mrs. John Beysar, 65, Dies This Morning At Family Home on South 12th Street Stricken with a heart attack while she was preparing breakfast at the family home, 1306 South Twelfth street at seven o'clock this morning, Mrs. John Beysar, 65, died shortly after the arrival of a physician. Mrs. Wood, a daughter, who resides with her mother, and two sons, were at hand, and although their mother had not been enjoying good health, she insisted on remaining at home, rather than going to the hospital. Mrs. Beysar was in the midst of the morning meal when stricken. Funeral services will be held Monday morning at nine o'clock from the St. Boniface church, with interment at Calvary cemetery. Live Here 37 Years Mrs. Beysar's maiden name was Barbare Crouse, and she was born in Germany and came to this country with her husband, 37 years ago locating in Manitowoc, where she has since resided. Mr. Beysar died nine years ago. Five daughters, Mrs. Charles Schuette, Mrs. James Kuplic, Mrs. Edward Woods, Mrs. Carl Schmidt and Miss Blanche Beysar, all of this city and three sons, Peter and Wencel of this city and John of Western, Nebraska, survive.
