JOZEF BEKIER cemetery #43a SENSATIONAL RUMORS CONCERNING DEATH OF LOCAL MAN STRICKEN AT VALDERS PROVE UNTRUE Found unconscious in a barn on the farm near Valders where he was employed ten days ago, Joseph Becker, of this city died at the hospital here without regaining consciousness, a victim of paralysis and the funeral was held today, burial being at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Sensational reports that Becker had been run down by an automobile on the road out of Valders and that he had later been carried to the barn and left there without attention have no foundation, it being said by physicians that the man suffered a stroke of paralysis, and that a bruise on his face resulted when he suffered the attack probably. Becker is survived by a widow, from whom he is divorced and four children, Mrs. G. Kortensky, John and Joseph, Jr., this city and Mrs. W. Theis, Two Rivers. MAGGIE BELGUM cemetery #27 From Der Nord Westen, 12 Sep. 1907: (From the correspondent in Mishicott, 10 Sep.) News was circulated last Friday that Mrs. E. Belgom, a local resident, had disappeared from her home during the night and could not be found despite the efforts of her husband and neighbors. Mrs. Belgom appears to be mentally disturbed. A few months ago she wandered away from home but was returned by neighbors. She is the mother of 4 children of whom the youngest is 5 years old. A brother of Mrs. Belgom, Mr. F. Ploekelmann, lives in Menominee, Michigan, and it is possible that she was attempting to go there. ************ From Der Nord Westen, 19 Sep. 1907: The missing Mrs. Belgom of Mishicott still has not been found. A $45 reward has been posted. ************ From Der Nord Westen, 03 Oct. 1907: (From the correspondent in Mishicott, 01 Oct.) Mrs. W. Belgom, who has been missing from her home for the past three weeks, was found dead in Joseph Beresch’s bushes on Sunday by Messrs. J. Stelzer and Engeland while they were rabbit hunting Medical examination established that she has only been dead for a few days, and it is surmised that she had hidden herself in the bushes the entire time and eventually died of exhaustion. The body was taken to the Belgom residence from where her funeral will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Norwegian Church. ************** (From the Gibson Evang. HENRY F. BELITZ cemetery #82 From Der Nord Westen, 11 Apr. 1878: Death of Col. H.F. Belitz suddenly on 31 Mar. He was 61 years old and born in Uckermark. Served as Justice of the Peace in Kiel, was Capt. of Company K, 9th Wisc. Infantry, and Col. of the 45th Regiment. He is survived by a large family. ******* HENRY BELITZ DEATH OF COL. HENRY BELITZ In our obituary column will be found a notice of the death of Col. Henry F. Belitz, of Kiel, Manitowoc County, but so well known to our citizens as to almost be considered a fellow citizen. On the 31st of March last the Colonel was out driving and was suddenly attacked by a paralytic stroke and falling over the dash board of the wagon the wheel of the vehicle passed over his head and neck causing his death. Col. Belitz is one of the oldest and best known residents of this portion of the state and has always been a man of standing and influence in the community. He was born February 16, 1817, in Schwed, Prussia and came to Sheboygan County in 1851, and thence to Kiel in 1855. He served as an officer in the 9th Wisconsin Regiment and afterwards placed in command of the 45th Wisconsin Regiment as its Colonel which post he filled until the regiment was mustered out of service. Colonel Belitz was a member of the bar although he did not devote much of his time to the practice of the law. He was also Plank Road Commissioner in the year of 1853. His loss will be deeply felt by the entire community and more especially by those who being more intimately acquainted with him had learned to appreciate and prize his good qualities. Colonel Belitz was the father of Mrs. R. Schlichting and Mrs Dr. Hoyer of this city, who have the sympathy of the entire community in this their hour of affliction. Chilton Times, 31 March 1878 *********** H. F. Belitz, once a very prominent citizen of this county, and a resident of Kiel, is dead. On Saturday last he was found upon the highway, having been thrown from his buggy. He was unconscious when found and, being removed to his residence, expired in a few moments.

HELEN CATHERINE BELITZ cemetery #82 Pioneer Woman Dies In the death at Manitowoc, Friday, August 19, 1910, of Mrs. Henry F. Belitz, widow of the late Colonel Henry F. Belitz of Kiel, there passed away one of the best known and most highly esteemed of the early pioneers of Manitowoc and Calumet counties. Helene Catherine Belitz, nee Schlichting, was born in Oldenburg, Germany, March 13, 1831. Caught in the great stream of emigration that left the German fatherland as a result of the revolution of 1818, her family found themselves among the pioneer band that founded Kiel, Manitowoc county, where October 1853, she was married to the late Henry F. Belitz, afterward colonel of the 45th Wisconsin Infantry. Col. Belitz was a man and citizen high-minded and singularly public spirited and his wife was in the truest and widest sense his companion and helpmeet. The Belitz' were widely known for their wide open hospitality and their hearty interest in everything that made for the public welfare. Col. Belitz was a man of rare culture, a splendid musician and deeply interested in the drama and literature even in the early days of Kiel. A singing society and an amateur threatrical society were the result his interest awakening and fostering a love for the culture side of life. In all this work Mrs. Belitz enthusiastically seconded her husband's efforts. Never, even in the days of pioneer primitiveness and hard, relentless struggling, were the graces of culture and refinement ignored or lost sight of in their home. Like her husband, Mrs. Belitz was ever ready to assist those in need and minister to those who were suffering. Nine children came to bless their union, three of whom, Lilly, Franklin and Henry, preceded their mother in death. Six, Mrs. J. Hoyer and Mrs. H. Lammers of Chicago, Mrs. G.A. Hipke and Dr. Alfred of Milwaukee, Dr. William of Cochrane, Wis., and Attorney Arthur of Madison besides one step-daughter, Mrs. Reinhard Schlichting, of Chilton survive. Not long after the death of her husband in 1878, her health began to fail, and this in turn in the end brought on her mental breakdown from which she was destined never to rally or recover and for the past thirty years she was an inmate of the County hospital at Manitowoc. Foot-sore and weary with the long, long journey, all unconscious of the great affliction which had befallen her - an affliction tragic almost as death itself- "God's finger touched her and she slept." Mrs. Belitz was buried at Kiel on Monday, W. H. Luehr of Manitowoc, and old friend of the family, delivering the funeral oration. - August 27, 1910

ALBERT BENISHEK cemetery #44 Albert William Benishek, ("Al"), was welcomed into Heaven by our Lord and Savior on Saturday, March 19, 2011. He passed away peace- fully at Heritage Park Nursing Home after years of relaxing at his lakeside home in Bradenton, Fla. Born as the only child to Frank B. and Olga (Kasten) Benishek on Nov. 16, 1923, in Manitowoc, he endured the challenges of the Great Depression. Al, a long time resident of Manitowoc, attended Immanuel Lutheran School and was a graduate of Lincoln High School class of 1941. He furthered his education with a technical diploma in machine tool operation from Manitowoc Vocational & Technical School (now known as Lakeshore Technical College). Prior to military service, he worked at Manitowoc Shipbuilding where he built submarines used in WWII. Al served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII at Great Lakes Naval Station with a specialization as a dental and X-ray technician. He had the distinction of training some of the first WAVES as dental technicians. Upon honorable discharge from the military in 1945, as a Pharmacist Mate, Al owned and operated Benishek Printing early in his career. He married his lovely wife, Betty Lou Brunner of Chicago, in 1952. Al joined The Manitowoc Company in the industrial crane division where he was a precision machinist for more than 40 years building sophisticated construction cranes for worldwide distribution. He managed the transition from traditional manual drill press operation to the newest of computerized automated drill press (CNC) machines. Because of his superior skills, Al was selected to work on the carrier system for moving the NASA space shuttle to the launch pad. He also trained numerous journeymen apprentices during his career. His work ethic was incredible; Al often worked tirelessly seven-days a week so he could provide a comfortable lifestyle for his family and fund college education for each of his two children. As a caring father, he took time teaching his son about mechanics and woodworking craftsmanship. This training resulted in five years of fun supervising the building of Soap Box Derby race cars and his son winning an ultimate championship! Al enjoyed real estate and residential architecture, commissioning the design and construction of three different homes in Manitowoc. Travel was also fundamental as a means of experiencing the beauty and history of this amazing country; Al was able to travel with his family to almost every state in the USA before he retired in 1986. Upon retirement, Al and his wife, Betty, relocated to Cape Coral, Fla., where they enjoyed poolside entertaining and boating on the saltwater canals. Al continued his service to our Lord at Abiding Love Lutheran Church in various capacities including designing a central computer database of congregation members. Al and Betty were instrumental in establishing a ministry where kids worked with puppets in theatrical performances sharing important messages of Christian values and God's Word. Shortly after the birth of their first grandson in 1995, Al and Betty moved to Bradenton, Fla., where they assisted with childcare and preschool education for both of their grandsons. Despite the fast pace of technology advances, Al continued to enhance his computer skills everyday by reading the Manitowoc newspaper online and staying in touch with relatives, former neighbors, his grade school friends, Navy buddies and fellow machinists from The Manitowoc Company via email. (Survivors omitted for privacy) Funeral services will be held at Hope Lutheran Church at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 24, 2011, at 4635 26th St., Bradenton, Fla. HAROLD BENSON cemetery #44 8 YEAR OLD BOY PUSHED INTO BONFIRE MAY NOT LIVE Said to have been pushed into the fire by a companion while playing about a bonfire on No. Tenth street last evening, Harold Benson, 8 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Benson, was so severely burned that little hope is entertained he can recover, Dr. F.S. Luhman, who is attending the child, reporting his condition to be critical this afternoon. Three boys, the Benson lad the youngest, were playing about the bonfire when it is said one of his companions pushed the younger lad and he fell into the fire. The two other boys ran away and a short time later Simon Sladkey, who conducts a second hand store near the scene heard the cries of the Benson child and went to his assistance. He rolled the lad in sand of the river bank near at hand and then carried him home. Physicians were called and the boy was taken to the hospital. The lad’s back, chest, arms and face are badly burned and he is suffering greatly. His condition is regarded as extremely critical and he may not survive. Whether any action will be taken against the boy said to have been responsible probably depends on the outcome of the Benson lad’s injuries. ERMA BENTLA/BENTLEY cemetery #44 From Der Nord Westen, 16 Jan. 1902: Death Mon. of a 9-mo. old daughter of Mr. Gebhard Bentley here of pneumonia. The funeral will be held today. (From cem. office: Based on the age, sex, cause of death, and relative similarity of the last name, I would say it's a match. The burial register has Erma Bentla, female, age 9 mo, born in Manitowoc, cause of death: pneumonia Perhaps Gebhardt Bentli [SR] was her grandfather. Maybe Gebhardt [JR] & Emma Bently were her parents. The lot that Gebhardt [JR] & Emma are buried on wasn't paid for until 1909, so it would make sense that if they had a child die in 1902, they might bury it on the grandparent's lot which was already paid for.)

Manitowoc Herald Times, Manitowoc, Wis. September 13, 1972 ******* TWO RIVERS BOY OF 14 PROMISING ART STUDENT Lester Bentley, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Bentley of Two Rivers duplicated his perfomance of last year by winning three prizes with oil paintings which he exhibited at the Manitowoc county fair last week. A marine scene took first prize and two landscapes each won a second place. In all, young Bentley had six pictures entered. Last year he made the startling record of two first and two second prizes on four entries. Lester is fourteen years old and will enter the Two Rivers High School next month, having graduated from the eighth grade of St. Lukes' school last June. It was not till about two years ago that he began to display an uncommon proficiency in the use of brushes and oils. This fact makes his work seem the more wonderful. The fact that his series last week were in competition with professional work shows that the lad possesses unusual talent and should be placed under expert teachers.
