BRUTUS BARTH The body of Brutus Barth, an Indian by birth, was found in a woods in Clark County evidently murdered with a bullet through the heart. The death was verified by a coroner as a murder. He was 50 years old, was born in the village of Kiel, was the chairman of the village council of Kiel and chairman of the Town of Schleswig Town Board for 30 years and also an assessor for the township of Kiel. His wife passed away 12 years ago and is survived by 3 sisters; Dora of Illinois; Caesar of Thorp, Wisconsin and Mrs. Peter Junck on the homestead farm. The body will be brought to Kiel and burial will be in the Rockville Cemetery. Plymouth Post, September 6, 1913

JOHN BARTH cemetery #84 From Der Nord Westen, 12 Jan. 1899: (From the correspondent in Kiel, 07 Jan.) John Barth, one of the eminent citizens of Manitowoc County, died yesterday. He had met with Henry Stoll, slipped and fell on the ice outside Stoll's door, breaking his neck. He died shortly after without gaining consciousness He was 72-yrs. old and for 28 years was chairman of this town and once represented this district in the State Assembly. John Barth's wife preceded him in death two years ago and he leaves 3 sons and 3 daughters. The eldest son has belonged to the regular army for many years and will make every effort to attend his father's funeral. That funeral will take place Tues. at 2 p.m. at the Rockville Cemetery. ******** From Der Nord Westen, 19 Jan. 1899: (Additional space is devoted to the death of John Barth, quoting from the obituary in "Kiel National Zeitung ". It indicates that Dr. Schaper was notified by telephone of the accidental slip and fall and went quickly to the location, but Barth had died in the interim. Examination found he had succumbed from a wound to the back of his head resulting in a broken neck.) ********** Kiel—John Barth, one of the most popular residents of town Schleswig, lost his life Friday noon in a tumble in front of Zillmann’s Store in Rockville. Barth had stopped by Stange a farmer in the neighborhood of Rockville who is Treasurer of Schleswig, and paid his taxes. On his was home he saw Schreiner’s Beer wagon in front of the Store and Saloon and hurried over there in order to ride home with it. Peter Klauck, the beer delivery man was willing to take him along to his farm which lies between Rockville and Kiel, but Barth had a small errand to do by Henry Stoll which is right near the Zillmann place. Barth had hardly gotten on the street when he stumbled and broke his neck. The deceased was Chairman of Town Schleswig for 28 years and represented our District in Legislation once. KATHARINE BARTH cemetery #84 From Der Nord Westen, 26 Aug. 1897: Death in Kiel yesterday morning of 71 yr. old Mrs. John Barth, one of the first female settlers in Town Schleswig, of inflammation of the lower abdomen. She and her husband had suffered the privations of the pioneer life in the woods near Schleswig. She is survived by her husband and 5 children. The eldest son has lived far away for the past 15 years. *********** Mrs Catharine Barth As we were going to press, we heard that, on Tuesday August 24, at 10:15 PM, Mrs. Catharine Barth, the wife of John Barth, who had reached the age of 71 years 9 months and 25 days, had died. The deceased was ill with Colera Morbus. In the month of May 1853, she married John Barth in Rottenacker, Wuttemburg, where she had been born and raised. The next day the newlyweds left for America. Three grown sons. Brutus, Cesar and John and two daughters, Dora and Lisbeth, as well as her husband are mourning her loss. Four children preceded her in death. The burial will take place on Friday afternoon at 2:00 PM from the farm to the Rockville Cemetery. Our condolences to the family. Kiel Record —1897
REV. LUDWIG BARTH cemetery #21 From Der Nord Westen, 02 May 1907: (From the correspondent in St. Nazianz, 30 Apr.) Sad news reached here Friday that Rev. Louis Barth has died in a sanitarium in Dearborn, Michigan, where he has been ill for several weeks. Father Barth came here at age 19 with his mother and sisters from their former home of Louisville, Kentucky. Shortly after, he began his studies for the priesthood. He was ordained a priest on 27 June 1880 and spent about 20 years as Rector of St. Laurentius in Milwaukee… His body was shipped from Michigan to the St. Laurentius church in Milwaukee and yesterday was brought here to St. Nazianz. The large funeral procession was held today, Tuesday, with the Archbishop and 24 priests participating. The deceased reached the age of 54 and is survived by his sorrowing mother and 2 sisters –Mrs. J.C. Kustermann from here, and Mrs. Dr. L. Jermain of Milwaukee. ************* Single –son of Frederick Barth and Theresa Dietmeier –born Louisville, Kentucky –died Milwaukee, Wisconsin –"From Louisville, Kentucky, Father Louis Barth came to St. Nazianz at the end of 1872. After preliminary training there, he attended St. Francis Seminary, and was ordained on June 27, 1880. His first Mass was in St. Gregory's on July 4. After pastorates at Pine Bluff, Kieler, Waterloo, and Lancaster, he founded the St. Lawrence congregation in Milwaukee and built all the parish facilities in 1888." –from the Centennial Book, p. 64 – no county death record

BARTELS OF CLEVELAND IS THE VICTIM Threw Carpet Over Smoking Kitchen Oil Stove Which Exploded, Ignited Clothes Mrs. John Bartels of Cleveland, a mother of three small children, was burned to death yesterday at the family home there when an oil stove which she had been using and which did not burn well, exploded, igniting her clothing. Mrs. Bartels instead of attempting to extinguish the flames which were rapidly enveloping her form, rushed to the second floor of her home where her youngest child lay asleep. She was fearful that the house would burn down and thinking more of her babe than of herself, she carried the child to safety outside the house and then screamed to neighbors for aid. When the neighbors came she had been burned beyond all hope of recovery, every stitch of her clothing having been burned from her body, nothing but her shoes remaining on her feet. Neighbors found her lying on the ground, moaning in death agonies. She died at 5:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon, a matter of four hours after the accident occurred. Rug on Stove Tells Tale. Mrs. Bartels, according to her husband who conducts the Manitowoc Storage Battery company on York street, had been using the kitchen oil stove which did not burn well. A rug which was found to have been thrown over the stove was mute evidence of what had occurred. Mrs. Bartels had turned the stove down as far as possible when it continued smoking. Then, to prevent the room from filling with kerosene fumes, she threw a rag carpet from the floor over the stove. The stove exploded at this juncture, the flames licking up from beneath the rug and igniting her clothing as she stood nearby. Her husband stated today that he had left the home for his business in Manitowoc and that he presumed the stove exploded shortly after his leaving or at about 2 o'clock. Sacrificed Self. Mrs. Bartels was 35 years of age. Her tragic death came as a shock to the neighborhood. Her mother love which compelled her to sacrifice herself for the life of one of her children will live long in the memory of the community and will be told and retold to children as a shining example of a great and undying love in which the greatest sacrifice was unhesitatingly made. Mrs. Bartels is survived by her husband and the three children, Violet, 12, Ruhle 8 and Elizabeth 4. It was Elizabeth whom the mother carried from the second floor where she was sleeping to safety outside the house. She is also survived by her sisters Mrs. Elizabeth Arahando, Abbotsford, Mrs. Lydia Tutloff, Curtis; Mrs. Thelma Culbertson, Greenleaf and Mrs. Alvina Siebert of Appleton, also one brother George of Abbotsford. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at Cleveland, the Rev. Springling to perform the last sad rites. (no dates or name of newspaper on this obituary)
WALTER R. BARTHEL cemetery #14 Walter Barthel, 46, of the town of Centerville, died this morning at Sheboygan Memorial hospital after a short illness. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon, from the home at 1:30 o'clock and from the St. Peter and St. John Lutheran church at 2 o'clock with the Rev. M.A. Braun officiating. Interment will be in Saxon cemetery. Mr. Barthel was born July 26, 1897 in the town of Centerville, a son of the late Henry and Catherina Barthel. He engaged in farming on the homestead farm. Survivors are one sister, Mrs. Alfred Jaehnig on the homestead; five nieces; and one nephew. His father died June 20 of this year and his mother died in December, 1939. Three sisters and two brothers also preceded him in death. The body may be viewed at the home from Friday evening to the time of the services. The casket will not be opened at church. LUDWIG BARTHELS cemetery #89A From the Two Rivers Chronicle Tuesday, June 23, 1914 EASTWIN NOTES Last Saturday morning Mr. Louis Barthels who has made his home here with his daughter Mrs. Bernard Wilke passed away after a few weeks illness. Deceased was born in Wellinghausen, Hanover, Germany, Jan. 22, 1931(sic). He came to this country in the year 1851 and settled at Shoto, where he lived for about two years when he was married to Miss Margaret Muller and purchased a farm in the school section where they cleared the land and not a stump or tree remains to remind one of the hardships of pioneer life. Here three daughters were born to them, Mrs. Louis Heyroth and Mrs. Henry Kiel of Mishicot and Mrs. Bernard Wilke who has always remained on the old homestead. The deceased was always known as a good neighbor and a kind and loving husband, father and grand-father and his presence will be missed by a large circle of friends as well as in the household where he was always cheerful and contented and enjoyed nothing more than to have his children, grand-children and great- grand-children gather around him. Besides his daughters he leaves 11 grand children and 5 great grand children to mourn his loss. The funeral took place Monday afternoon from St. John's Lutheran church at Two Rivers with interment at the cemetery.

CHARLES BARTLETT (d. 1932) cemetery #44 Charles Bartlett Dies At Milwaukee VET N.W. ROAD CONDUCTOR PASSES AWAY Body To Be Brought Here For Burial-On Local Run For Many Years News of the death of Charles Bartlett, veteran North Western road conductor and for years a resident of this city, has been received from Milwaukee where Mr. Bartlett had resided for a long time. His death, which occurred last night, was due to the shock of an operation which he underwent several days ago at Milwaukee hospital. To Bring Body Here While funeral arrangements have not been completed the body will be brought to this city for burial, probably tomorrow or Friday. Mr. Barlett's wife, who was Caroline Seeger, of this city, and preceded him in death several years ago, is buried here. Mr. Bartlett, one of the most popular conductors on the North Western line and who for twenty or more years had a run on the Lake Shore division through this city, was 76 years of age and had retired from the service, having been pensioned some years ago. He was a frequent visitor here and had a wide circle of friends in Manitowoc. Born at Kenosha A native of Kenosha where he was born and reared, Mr. Bartlett had spend most of his life at Milwaukee. After his marriage in this city he made his home here for several years but owing to headquarters of his run being at Milwaukee, again located in that city. He is survived by one son at Milwaukee. EDGAR L. BARTS cemetery #82 Edgar L. Barts, 84, formerly of Kiel, and a resident of Calumet Homestead, New Holstein since 1987, died Wednesday evening, June 6, 1990 at Calumet Medical Center, Chilton, where he was a patient since Saturday. He was born May 18, 1906, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Barts. He attended schools at Howards Grove. On August 13, 1932, he married the former Elsie Rades in the Town of Meeme. He was employed at the Laun Furniture Co., in Kiel, until his retirement. The couple lived in Osman and in the Town of Herman prior to moving to Kiel in 1964. Elsie died November 3, 1974. Survivors include three sons, two daughters, 20 grandchildren; one step- granddaughter; 12 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Annie Hoenke, of School Hill. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. (Survivors edited for privacy) Private funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel, with the Rev. Raymond C. Coombs, pastor of St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Kiel, officiating. Burial will be in the Kiel Cemetery. ELSIE BARTS cemetery #82 Mrs. Edgar L. Barts, 59, of Route 2, Kiel, died at her home Sunday morning after a lingering illness. The former Elsie Rades, she was born February 21, 1915 in the Town of Meeme, the daughter of Herman and the late Hulda the daughter of Herman and the late Hulda Fromm Rades.(sic) She attended district school. On August 13, 1932 she was married to Mr. Barts in the Town of Meeme. The couple lived at Osman and in the Town of Herman prior to moving to their present home at Kiel 10 years ago. Survivors are her husband; two daughters, three sons, 18 grandchildren her father of Ada, a brother and a sister. Funeral services were held yesterday, Wednesday, at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel. The Reverend Robert L. Johnston, pastor of Community United Church of Christ, Elkhart Lake, officiated. DOROTHEA BARTSCH Cemetery #17 (From the Obituary Book of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Maribel: 10 February 1879...edited) (there is no stone for this entry) Dorothea Bartsch was born in 1799 in Warsaw in Poland and baptized there, and confirmed in Schottow in Schlesien. In 1829 she married Johann Bartsch. They had two children, of whom their son B. Bartsch is still living. Her husband preceded her in death in 1859. In 1855 they emigrated to America and settled here after a short stay in Cedarburg. She died Friday evening. Her age was 80 years.
HENRIETTE BARTSCH Cemetery #17 (From the Obituary Book of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Maribel: Burial on 6 September 1882...edited) Henriette Auguste Wilhelmine Bartsch born Jaeger, the wife of Ernst Bartsch, was born January 29, 1840, in Muhlendorf, Kreis Labes, Pommern. She was baptized and confirmed in Neukirchen. She came to America in 1861, and married Ernst Bartsch in January of 1862. Some time ago her health began to fail, and about three weeks ago a hemorrhage occurred, resulting in blood poisoning. With that, she grew weaker, with lung problems and a high fever, in spite of medication. At half past ten September 5, 1882, she expired. She is survived by a husband and eight children. Her age was 42 years, 7 months and 7 days.

TAMMY BARTZ cemetery #43 Tammy Marie, six-day old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. (private) Bartz, Manitowoc, died early Thursday morning at Memorial Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home, Manitowoc. The Rev. John Pawleski will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. The infant was born Thursday, June 18, at Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Bartz is the former Jean Marie Gauthier. Surviving in addition to the parents are the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Gauthier of Two Rivers, paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Lyss of Milwaukee; the great maternal grandmother, Mrs. Wallace Anderson of Manitowoc and the great paternal grandmother, Mrs. Theresa Wutt of Milwaukee. MARY JANE BARUTH cemetery #44 Mary Jane Baruth, 86, a resident of St. Mary's Home, Manitowoc, died early Sunday morning Jan. 21, 2007 at St. Mary's Nursing Home, Manitowoc. Mary Jane was born on Jan. 11, 1921 in Manitowoc, daughter of the late Joseph and Marie (Mazanet) Cybert. Mary Jane attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and graduated from Manitowoc Lincoln High School with the class of 1938. On Jan. 19, 1943 Mary Jane married Arthur G. Baruth at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The couple just celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary. Mary Jane was an avid golfer at Lincoln Fields and Fox Hills. She enjoyed swimming at the YMCA and her card game of bridge. Mary Jane was a volunteer at many different organizations including the American Red Cross, and the American Cancer Society. She was a member of the YMCA and a former member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and presently a member of St. Francis of Assisi. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) Mary Jane also was preceded in death by numerous uncles, aunts and other relatives. The family will greet relatives and friends from 11 a.m. until the time of Mass at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007 at St. Francis of Assisi on Grand, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007 at St. Francis of Assisi on Grand. Officiating at the Memorial Mass will be the Rev. Msgr. AMELIA BARYENBRUCH cemetery #70 Mrs. Amelia Baryenbruch, 67, of 1520 Clark street, died Sunday noon at the Holy Family hospital after a lingering illness Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. from the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home and at two o'clock from the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran church at Newton. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Baryenbruch, nee Amelia Matthis, was born in Sheboygan county in 1872 and when a girl came to this county with her parents. The family located on a farm in Liberty. She was married in 1891 to Henry Baryenbruch, who operated a cheese factory in Newton until 1909. They purchased a farm in the same town. Mr. Baryenbruch died in 1911. Mrs. Baryenbruch operated the farm until 1927 when she moved to this city. She was a member of the Newton congregation. CLARENCE BARYENBRUCH cemetery #44 Undersheriff Baryenbruch Dies After Suffering Stroke Taken Ill at Sheriff's Office On Wednesday Manitowoc-- Undersheriff Clarence Baryenbruch, 47, of 1024 South Eighth St., sheriff of Manitowoc County from 1948 through 1952, died unexpectedly of a heart stroke at the Holy Family Hospital shortly after 10 o'clock Wednesday night. Baryenbruch, named undersheriff by Sheriff Lester Nichols when the latter took office last January, was questioning some boys in the sheriff's office earlier in the evening about petty thefts in the county when he was stricken. Moved to the hospital by ambulance, he died two hours later. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First German Evangelical Lutheran Church. The Rev. ? H. Koeninger will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Managed Oil Station He was born in the town of Newton in 1906, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Baryenbruch. He married Miss Ann Pleuss in 1929. He managed an oil station for the Streich Oil Company at Tenth and Franklin Streets for a number of years and for nearly eight years was a guard at the Manitowoc Shipbuilding , Inc., during the submarine program in World War 11. The Last two years he was chief of the guard force. Baryenbruch served as undersheriff during the term of former Sheriff Arthur Truttschel and also served several years as a deputy sheriff. He was elected sheriff in 1948 on the Republican ticket and was renamed to a second two year term in 1950. Ineligible to run for a third term under state statutes, he was named undersheriff by Sheriff Lester Nichols following the election and assumed his new duties last January. Since then he had been doing much of the investigating work connected with the sheriff's office and assisted in calls to accidents with the sheriff and the county traffic officers. Wife 3 Sons Survive He was a member of the County Sheriff and Deputies Association, the state organization, Iznak Walton League, Manitowoc County Fish and Game Protective association, Barbershop chorus and the Seagulls. Surviving are his wife; three sons, (private); three brothers, Arthur of Spring Green, Wis., and Walter and Herbert of Manitowoc; four sisters, Mrs. Clara Valleskey of Collins, Mrs. Marvin Mueller of Manitowoc, Mrs. Rudolph Jaehnig of Two Rivers and Mrs. Hattie Haupt of Manitowoc Rapid. GEORGE H. BASHAW cemetery #44 George H. Bashaw, 59, of 919 Buffalo street, a resident of Manitowoc for the last 18 years, died Saturday night at the Holy Family hospital. He had been at the hospital only one week but had been ill for some time. Mr. Bashaw was a lumber inspector and was employed by various lumber concerns in the northern part of the state. He was born at Sioux City, S.D., Aug. 2, 1880. He married Miss Armenia Patnode at Eugalle, Wis., May 1, 1900. They moved here 18 years ago and have resided here since. After graduation, Margaret was employed for a short time in the offices of Hamilton Industries. She was very active in the Friends of Holiday House, and also volunteered many hours at the Two Rivers Hospital and Hamilton Home. Margaret enjoyed playing organ and playing cards. She is survived by one daughter, one son, one grandson, and two great- grandchildren. She is further survived by a sister, LaVerne Brouchard, Manitowoc and two nieces. Bauer, 81 (photo) retired pastor of Reformed churches in several states, died Wednesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Terry Nelson, in Sheboygan where he and his wife have resided the past four years. The pastor made his home in Newton for 15 years, serving in the pulpit at times of the Salem Ebenezer Reformed Church in that town. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Ballhorn Funeral Chapel, Sheboygan, with the Rev. John Heinbuch of Milwaukee officiating. Rites will follow at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Salem Ebenezer Refomed Church, Newton. The Rev. K.J. Stuebbe will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. The pastor was born in Germany in 1873 and accompanied his parents to the United States in 1891 settling in Philadelphia. He later entered Mission House College and was graduated from the seminary and ordained as a pastor of the Reformed church in 1903. He served churches at Beldon, Nebr., Oshkosh, Hoard, and Black Wolf, Wis., Upham, N.D., and Deepwater, Minn. On his retirement he located in Newton. In 1903 he married Miss Emma Vriesen. She was a daughter of the late Rev. D.W. Vriesen, a pastor of Reformed churches for many years. The couple observed its golden wedding at a party at Newton in 1953, arranged by their children. Surviving are his wife; a son, Dr. Theodore Bauer, in government service at Karlshuhe, Germany; four daughters, Mrs. Terry Nelson of Sheboygan, Mrs. George Smith of Burnett, Wis., and Mrs. John Sprague and Mrs. Theodore Haberkorn of Milwaukee; and ten grandchildren. MARIA THERESIA BAUER cemetery #43 From Der Nord Westen, 16 Jan. 1890 82 yr. old Mrs. Bauer, who lived in the residence of Peter Schreihart, went to bed Fri. evening completely healthy. On Sat. morning the other residents got no response from her, broke the door down, and found her dead in her bed. Dr. Luhmann was called and as best as could be determined, she was overcome by the coal gas in the stove. Mrs. Maria Theresia Bauer, mother-in-law of Mr. Joseph L. Mueller of Manitowoc, was born Oct. 1808. She came to Manitowoc Co. in the summer of 1847 and has lived here ever since. The burial took place Tues. morning.
MARY BAUER cemetery #66 Mrs. Frank Bauer, 80, of Tisch Mills died Saturday morning at Two Rivers Municipal Hospital. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Klein and Stangel Inc., Funeral Home, Two Rivers, the Rev. James Stamborski officiating. Burial will be in Tisch Mills Public Cemetery. Mrs. Bauer, nee Mary Riha, was born in the Town of Carlton, Kewaunee County, March 26, 1889, a daughter of the late Joseph and Barbara Shefchek Riha. She was married at Norman June 24, 1913, to Frank Bauer, after which the couple engaged in farming in the Town of Carlton. They retired to Tisch Mills 22 years ago. Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Raymond and Daniel of Rt. 1, Kewaunee; a sister, Mrs. Daniel Janda of Milwaukee; two brothers, Matt of Tisch Mills and Frank of Rt. 1, Kewuanee; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. REINHARDT BAUER cemetery #47 WAR VETERAN, OLD RESIDENT, DEAD, RAPIDS Reinhard(sic) Bauer, Aged 72, Came to County As Boy of 8 Years Reinhard Bauer, civil war veteran and one of the pioneer settlers of Manitowoc county is dead at his home in Rapids, aged 72. Mr. Bauer’s death occurred last evening and was due to infirmities of age. Mr. Bauer came to Manitowoc county with his parents from Germany when a lad of eight years and with exception of time spent in service of his country during the civil war, when he was a member of the Twenty Sixth Wisconsin regiment, had resided here all his life. He was injured in battle with his regiment and had felt the effects of his wound in late years. A widow and four children survive Mr. Bauer whose funeral will be held Saturday morning at Rapids. He was a sufferer for over a year. Mr. Bauer was an old soldier, aged 72 years. He leaves besides a widow to mourn his loss, three sons and one daughter, Mrs. Anton Schmitz and Peter, Nickolas and John, all residing in the town of Rapids.
