JAMES H. BARRETT cemetery #89C James H. Barrett, 77, of 1616-29th St., Two Rivers, retired operator of the former Barrett Tool and Die Works and the possessor of at number of patents in the mechanical field, died Saturday afternoon at Two Rivers Municipal Hospital. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Klein and Stangel Inc., Funeral Home, Two Rivers, the Rev. Paul H. Blaufuss, pastor of St. John United Church of Christ, Manitowoc, officiating. Burial will be in Forest View Cemetery. Mr. Barrett was born at Chambersburg, W. Va., where he learned the tool and die making trade. He came to Two Rivers in 1921 and established his tool and die making facility on the south side at River Place. He served the needs of local industry for many years in specialized machinery and in die work particularly the Schwartz Mfg. Co., having designed and developed a machine to speed up production in the company's buff division. He retired and discontinued the business in 1956, moving to Englewood, Colo. He returned to Two Rivers in 1968. Besides his wife, the former Thelma Richardson, whom he married at Daytona Beach, Fla., Dec. 5, 1955, he leaves three daughters, Mrs. Vernon (Betty) Kirchen of Rt. 1, Two Rivers, Mrs. Carl (Mary Ann) McKellar of Rose City, Minn., and Mrs. Lester (Dorothy) LaBine of Bell, Calif.; four sons, Warren of Grassie, Ont., Canada, Oliver of Manitowoc, Robert of Two Rivers and James of Green Bay; 11 grandchildren and on great grandchild. PENA BARTEL BARRETT cemetery #79 Mrs. Pena Bartel Barrett, 77, of Kiel, died Sunday at Calumet Memorial Hospital, Chilton, after being hospitalized one day. She was born on October 31, 1896 in the Town of Rockland; a daughter of the late Albert and Minnie Schley Moede. She attended district schools. On November 30, 1916, she was married to Arno Bartel at Evangelical United Brethren Church, Reedsville. After marriage the couple settled on a farm near Reedsville. In 1935, they moved to New Holstein and in 1955 to Kiel. Mr. Bartel died on September 28, 1960. She was employed at the Leverenz Shoe Company, New Holstein, for 10 years. On March 8, 1963, she was married to the Reverend Newton Barrett at Kiel. Since February 1973 she resided at the Calumet Homestead, New Holstein. Mrs. Barrett was a member of the Women’s Guild and the Frauen Verein of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, Kiel. Survivors are two daughters, 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Robert Darling of Akron, Ohio and Mrs. Adolph Busse of Manitowoc, and two brothers, Arnold and Richard Moede, both of Reedsville. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel. The Reverend Calmer Overlein, pastor of Zion United Methodist Church, Forest Junction, officiated. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Reedsville.


CLYDE D. BARRIE cemetery #44 DEATH COMES TO RELEASE HIS SUFFERING Clyde Barrie Passes Away In Prime Of His Life Death came to Clyde Barrie at the family home 827 North Ninth street last night shortly after 11 o'clock while he slept peacefully after having spent a better day and evening than usual. Taken ill six months ago he had been a patient at the hospital and at his home ever since and for a time showed signs of recovery. While it was known that his condition was serious the death came as a great shock to the family and a wide circle of friends. The funeral will be held from the home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial will be at Evergreen. Clyde Barrie was taken seriously ill last October and for weeks was a patient at the Holy Family hospital. He recovered sufficiently to return to his home and then made a trip to Chicago to consult a specialist regarding his heart trouble. Upon the night of his return from Chicago he suffered a stroke of paralysis which was the cause of the death last night. Born Here in 1893 Mr. Barrie was born in this city November 23, 1893 and was but 28 years of age. He attended the local high school and graduated with the class of 1913. Later he attended Northwestern University at Evanston, Ill., and returned here to accept a positon in the office of the Aluminum Goods company with the accounting department a postion which he held up to the time of his illness. Favorite of Aunt During his youth he acquired the habit of spending much of his time with his aunt, Mrs. Sam Olson, 1214 New York avenue and to her he would go with all of his little troubles and for her he took the place of two sons who died in infancy. The friendship of the two was great and the shock to Mrs. Olson, who has been in poor health for a number of years is a severe one. Deceased was a member of the Presbyterian church, of Manitowoc Lodge No. 65 F.& A.M., of Manitowoc Chapter No. 16 Royal Arch Masons and of the Elks. His mother died January 7, 1918 and was followed six months later by the father on June 21. After the death of the mother Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Barrie came here from Green Bay to take up their residence at the family homestead and Clyde made his home with them for the past three years. Surviving Relatives Surviving him are two brothers, Arthur, with whom he made his home and Walter C., of Los Angeles, Calif. Two aunts, Mrs. Sam Olson of this city and Mrs. Albert Barrie of Portland, Oregon are the only other surviving members of the family. The Rev. D.C. JACOB C. BARRIE ATTENDS CHURCH IN THE MORING, PASSES AWAY IN EVENING Death of Jacob Barrie, Well Known Resident is Sudden and Unexpected Sudden and unexpected was the death of Jacob C. Barrie, well known resident of the city and one of the oldest employees of the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Co., who passed away at his home on N. Ninth street at 6 o’clock Sunday evening after a short illness due to acute indigestion. Mr. Barrie had been at his work Saturday and yesterday morning attended serviced at the Presbyterian church of which he was a member. He appeared in his usual health and spirits. During the afternoon while friends were calling Mr. Barrie stepped to the porch for a few seconds, and when he returned to the room was forced to rest on the couch, complaining of illness. A physician was summoned and though Mr. Barrie was unconscious, he revived soon and was apparently improving when he suffered another collapse and shortly after he passed away. Mr. Barrie realized that the end was near and left messages for his absent children. Mr. Barrie was born in Norway, May 22, 1847 and at early age followed the seas, sailing the ocean up to the time he was 20 when he came to the Great Lakes. He continued to sail until 1900 when he retired and entered employ of the Shipbuilding Co. and was foreman of the caulking department at his death. He was married in 1847 to Jennie Michelson who preceded him in death January 7, 1918. Three sons survive Mr. Barrie, Walter of Los Angeles, Arthur and Clyde of this city. Deceased was a member of the Royal Arcanum and an active member of the Presbyterian church. Funeral arrangements have not been made pending word from his son in Los Angeles. THOMAS C. BARRIE cemetery #44 FUNERAL OF THE LATE THOMAS BARRIE HERE SATURDAY Death From Heart Failure Occurred on Tuesday News has been received in the city telling of the death of Thomas C. Barrie, who died at his home in Bellevue, Tuesday evening. Death was due to heart failure. The deceased is survived by his widow and one son; one sister and five brothers, together with nine grandchildren. The remains will arrive in the city today and the funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon at two o’clock from the home of the decedent’s brother, J.C. Barrie, 827 North Ninth street. Rev. Espeseth will officiate and interment will be at Evergreen cemetery. Many friends of the family here will be pained to hear of Mr. Barrie’s demise. He was well and favorably known. CATHERINE BARRY cemetery #43 DEATH CLAIMES ANOTHER OF CITY PIONEERS Mrs. James Barry Called to Rest Early Today Death claimed another of the early pioneer residents of the city today when Mrs. Catherine Barry, wife of James Barry, succumbed after an illness of few days. Mrs. Barry's death was due to hemorrhage of the brain. Mrs. Barry was a native of county Clare, Ireland, having been born there May 22, seventy seven years ago. She came here in the early 50's and made her home here since. Besides her husband, Mrs. Barry is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Thomas Dorey and Mrs. Mary Wittev, both of this city. Twelve grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive. The funeral will be held from Sacred Heart church Tuesday morning with interment at Calvary. JOHN BARRY cemetery #43 From Der Nord Westen, 16 July 1908: John Barry, an employee of the Goodrich Transit Co., died Sunday in Holy Family Hospital. Barry had undergone an operation recently but had resumed his work on the steamship "Georgia". His condition got worse so that when the steamer reached here Sunday he was taken back to the hospital where he soon died. Barry is survived by his parents and 2 sisters. The funeral was held yesterday morning. ******** John Barry is Dead. John Barry, and employe of the Goodrich Transit Co., died suddenly at the home of his parents Sunday night after an illness of but few days, due to the shock of an operation which he underwent at Chicago. Mr. Barry came home from Chicago Sunday morning and was taken immediately to his home, where during the day his condition became alarming and death resulted in the evening. A native of this city, Mr. Barry was well know and his death will prove a shock to friends. He was 44 years of age and had followed the lakes, being employed on the Goodrich steamer Georgia only recently. Mr. Barry suffered from strangulated hernia and underwent an operation at Chicago, the shock of which was the direct cause of his death. His condition became alarming first on Saturday and though he was urged to leave the boat, he was loath to do so until his arrival here and it was then too late. Besides his parents, Mr. Barry is survived by two sisters, Mrs. T. Dorey and Mrs. Wittey, both of this city. JOSEPHINE (SHEPERSKI) BARSHAW cemetery #43a Death paid a cruel visitation to the home of Louis Barshaw taking from the home a young mother and new born babe. Mrs. Barshaw, who was but nineteen years of age, was born at Milwaukee and was a bride of a year. The family came to the city only a few months ago and took up their residence at 1121 South Twenty-first street. ALAN J. BARTA cemetery #66 Alan J. Barta, age 68, of Two Creeks Road, Two Rivers, died unexpectedly Thursday, February 19, 1998. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, February 23, 1998, at 7:15 p.m. at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, Tisch Mills. Rev. Gerald B. Kempen, 0. Praem, will officiate, with burial in the church cemetery. Alan was born March 29, 1929, in Two Creeks, son of the late Calvin and Leilah (Havlinek) Barta. He was a life-long area resident. Alan was a graduate of Washington High School, Two Rivers, with the Class of 1946. He married the former Grace Retzlaff on November 10, 1951, in Vesper, Wis. Mr. Barta operated their homestead farm in Two Creeks until his retirement in 1990, and remained active with his son, on the farm. He also worked at the Two Creeks Garage for many years. He was a member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, Tisch Mills, the Holy Name Society of the church, and served as Director of the men's choir of the church. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #4807. Alan played for many polka bands, including the Two Creeks Farm Hands, The Jerry Volker Polka Band, and currently was playing with the Lee Rollin Polka Band. He is survived by his wife, Grace; two daughters and one son-in-law, two sons and daughters-in-law, 11 grandchildren, one brother, two brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews. Friends may call after 3 p.m. on Monday at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, Tisch Mills, until the time of the Funeral Mass at 7:15 p.m. There will be a Knights of Columbus Rosary Service at 6:45 p.m. at the church. BARTA DIES TUESDAY Dies at home of daughter, Funeral on Friday Mrs. Catherine Barta, 73, widow of Frank Barta, died Tuesday at 8:15 p.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Fechter, 509 St. Clair Street, with whom she had resided for the last three months. She had been ailing for now, for some time. The funeral will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home, where the body will lie in state after 4 o'clock this afternoon. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Mrs. Barta, who before her marriage was Catherine Krainik, was born at Kellnersville Nov. 20, 1859. Her parents moved to Manitowoc when she was a small child. She was married to Frank Barta in this city in September, 1877. Mr. Barta died nine years ago. The survivors are six children, Emil of this city and Fred of Lodi, Mrs. Anna Lewis of Oak Park, Ill, Mrs. Harry Simons of Lodi and Mrs. Joseph Kaiser and Mrs. George Fechter of this city. CHARLES BARTA cemetery #44 Charles Leo Barta, 38, of Rt. 2, Two Riveres, died Sunday afternoon at Two Rivers Municipal Hospital from injuries received in a 20 foot fall from the hay mow on the Milton Guex farm, Rt. 2, employed by the Guex family for Two Rivers, Jan. 5. He had been employed by the Guex family for the last 15 years. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Mishicot, the Rev. David Worgull officiating. DALE R. BARTA cemetery #16 Dale R. Barta, 63, of Green Bay, died unexpectedly Friday, August 9, 1991, at a local hospital. He was born October 7, 1927, in Niagara, Wis., to Sylvia (Jacobsky) Barta Siehr and the late Joseph Barta. Dale served in the U.S. Air Force from 1945 until his discharge in 1947. He married the former Jean Clayton June 23, 1951, in Two Rivers. Dale was employed by the FMC Corporation until his retirement in 1985. He was a charter member of both the Green Bay Northeast Lions Club and the Lazy Acres Hunting Club in Cooperstown. Dale was a member of St. Philip Parish. He is survived by his wife, Jean; two sons, three daughters and sons- in-law, seven grandchildren; his mother and stepfather, one brother and sister-in-law, one sister, two stepbrothers and stepsisters-in-law, one step-sister and stepbrother-in-law, nieces and nephews. FRANCES BARTA cemetery #77 Mrs. Frances Barta, 82, of Reedsville, died Sunday evening at the Manitowoc Health Care Center. Funeral services will be at 9:45 a.m. Thursday at Reedsville Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic church, Reedsville. The Rev. John Neuser will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Barta, nee Frances Kubale, was born Feb. 1, 1891, in the Town of Rockland, daughter of the late Albert and Anna Kajek Kubale. She was married to Wencel Barta in August of 1911 at Reedsville. Her husband preceded her in death. Mrs. Barta was a charter member of the St. Ann Christian Mothers Society and also a member of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin. Survivors include a son, James, of Deorrigan, of Campbellsport, Wis., a sister, Mrs. John Ditmer, of Kewaunee, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Two sons preceded her in death. FRANK BARTA cemetery #44 DEATH COMES TO FRANK BARTA Came to Manitowoc Over a Half Century Ago Death came to Frank Barta, 1023 Chicago street, at the home at 9 o’clock last night, following a stroke which he suffered while at work about the house Sunday morning. Until yesterday he had apparently been in perfect health and the attack came without warning, death following in a few hours. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon from the home at 2 o’clock, the Rev. F. P. Keicher of Chilton officiating and burial will be at Evergreen. Frank Barta was born in Bohemia December 13, 1850, and would have been 74 at his next birthday. He came to this county as a boy and served with a crew of men that built the Union Pacific railway through Nebraska. He then took up the jewelry industry and located at Kewaunee, where he remained until he came to Manitowoc a half century ago. Here he engaged in the farm implement business and then was employed by the Wagner Hardware store until it burned. After the fire he took a position with the American Seating company and was employed by them until his death. In 1878 Mr. Barta was married to Miss Catherine Krainik, the widow who with six children, survive to mourn his death. They are Mrs. Joseph Kaiser, Mrs. George M. Fechter and Emil of this city, Mrs. Sam Lewis of Chicago, Mrs. Harry Simons and Fred Barta of Lodi. Deceased was a member of the Bohemian society, C.S.P.S. JAMES M. BARTA cemetery #16 James M. Barta, age 56, of Two Rivers, died Thursday morning, June 10, 1993, at his home. Funeral Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 12, 1993, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Two Rivers. The Rev. Paul Schumacher will officiate at the Mass of Christian Burial with burial following at St. James Cemetery, Cooperstown. He was born June 12, 1936, in Two Rivers, son of Sylvia Jacobosky and the late Joseph Barta. He married Marjorie Tate August 8, 1986, at Manitowoc. He was employed by the City of Two Rivers for over 15 years as a plant operator in the Water Filtration Plant. Jim enjoyed golfing, woodworking and his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie, Two Rivers; two sons and daughters-in-law, three daughters and sons-in-law, his mother and step-father, Sylvia and Clarence Siehr, Two Rivers; a sister, three step-sons and two step-daughters-in-law, one step-daughter and step-son-in-law, two sisters-in-law, five grand-daughters; one step-grandson; one step-granddaughter; nieces, and nephews. JOHN BARTA cemetery #39 JOHN BARTA, KOSSUTH MAN, PASSES AWAY Death came as a release from suffering for John Barta last night at the family home on a farm in the town of Kossuth after an illness of four years. The funeral will be held Friday morning from the home with services at 10 o'clock at St. Augustine Catholic church at Rief's Mills, Rev. Schueller officiating. Born at the farm where he died Mr. Barta had lived in the county for forty-one years, having first seen the light of day August 27, 1885. He was married twelve years ago to Miss Emma Naidl and is survived by his widow, three children, Rose Evelyn and John, two sisters, Mrs. Andrew Cliecquennol of Sheboygan and Mrs. Frank Novak of Commonwealth, Wis., one brother, Frank, address unkown and his mother, Mrs. Frank Barta, who made her home with the family. MARY BARTA cemetery #47 Mrs. Mary Barta, 79, who for years resided at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Cherney, of Menasha Avenue, Manitowoc, died Monday evening at Park Lawn Home where she had lived three weeks. She was born Mary Furlong Aug. 10, 1883 at Chicago, daughter of the late John and Mary Anna Gallagher Furlong. She was married to Charles Barta June 28, 1910, at Silver Lake. Her husband died in January of 1921. She was a member of the Altar Society of Holy Innocents Church. Among survivors are four son, Francis of Rt. 1, Manitowoc, Charles of Boyd, Wis., and Donald and Raymond of Manitowoc; a daughter, Mrs. Lloyd Cherney of Manitowoc; 20 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. THERESA A. BARTA cemetery #16 Theresa A. Barta died of cancer, on Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005. A memorial service will be held at noon on Friday, June 17, 2005 at St. James Catholic Church in Cooperstown. Theresa was born on Oct. 25, 1926 in Two Rivers, the middle child of Alexander and Anna Shikowski Pliszkiewicz's five children. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic Grade School and Washington High School in Two Rivers, graduating in 1943. Theresa married Joseph J. Barta at Sacred Heart Church in Two Rivers on Oct. 26, 1946. She worked as a shipping clerk at Paragon Electric for over 20 years until her retirement in 1982. Theresa's husband preceded her in death on May 8, 1986. Theresa continued to live in the Two Rivers-Manitowoc area until 2003 when she moved to Champaign, Ill. Theresa especially loved the water and often spent time at Neshotah Beach, Point Beach and Peninsula State Parks as well at Kangaroo Lake in Door County, the Atlantic coast of South Carolina and the Pacific coast of Oregon. She also enjoyed reading, eating out with friends and country music. Theresa is survived by her two daughters, and two grand- daughters. She is survived by one brother. WENZEL BARTA cemetery #77 Wenzel F. Barta, 80, of Reedsville died at his home Thursday shortly before noon after a lingering illness. She attended St. Luke Parochial School and in her young womanhood she was associated with her sisters in the operation of the Schmitt Sisters Millinery store at Two Rivers. Last Tuesday she fell while coming downstairs and her condition failed rapidly. He attended St. James School at Cooperstown and married Margaret O'Connor at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manitowoc, Oct. 21, 1930. As a young man Mr. Bartelme was pianist for 10 years with the former Lyric Orchestra. In 1931, he entered into partnership with a brother, Eugene, to conduct and operate a grocery and meat market, Bartelme's Food Market, 731 N. 11th St. Mr. Bartelme was a member of Holy Name Society and the dartball team of Holy Innocents Church, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Catholic Knights of Wisconsin, Manitowoc County Food Dealers Assn., Wisconsin Retail Food Dealers Assn. and the National Association of Retail Grocers. For a number of years Mr. Bartelme was active in Manitowoc County bowling circles. HELEN J. BARTELME cemetery #33 Helen J. Bartelme, age 75, a resident of 2002 Western Ave., Manitowoc, and formerly of 10336 Paradise Lane, Kiel, entered into eternal life on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007, at her residence. Helen was born on Aug. 24, 1931, in Algoma, to the late Joseph and Anna Wizner Mraz. She graduated from Algoma High School with the class of 1949. On June 11, 1955, she married Michael R. Bartelme in Manitowoc. Michael preceded her in death on Oct. 30, 1993. Helen later went back to school, and graduated from Silver Lake College in 1988. She then was employed as a student services coordinator at Silver Lake College. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband: Michael; her daughter: Mary Mae; six brothers, and a sister. A private memorial service will be held at a later date with burial to follow at Knollwood Memorial Gardens. Mr. Bartelme was well-known throughout the entire county. He was a prominent member of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin and the Modern Woodmen of America. MARGERETHA BARTELME cemetery #16 From Der Nord Westen, 06 Feb. 1896: Death of Mrs. M. Bartelme of Kings Bridge, on Wed. last week, after a long and severe illness. She was born 1829 in Germany, came to America in 1851, first lived a few years in Town New Denmark, Brown County, and then moved to Town Gibson in Manitowoc County. For the past two years she cared for her quite elderly husband while living with their son-in-law Jos. Reinert, near Kings Bridge, where she died. She leaves many children and grandchildren. Burial was Sat. in the Catholic Cemetery of Cooperstown.


MICHAEL BARTELME cemetery #89B From Der Nord Westen, 14 Dec. 1893: Death on Mon., 11 Dec., in Two Rivers, after a short illness of Michael Bartelme, one of the prominent residents of Two Rivers. He was born 30 Sept. 1855 in New Denmark, Brown Co. He is an old resident of Two Rivers where he formerly managed the Wisconsin House, but in 1892 he joined with the Gagnon Bros. in the construction of Waverly House. He was afflicted with grippe over the last year and never fully recovered. Bartelme was originally set for 10 a.m. on Wed., but the time was advanced to 9 a.m., so many people from out of town arrived after the ceremony. Joseph Mueller and Edward Brandeis had set out from Kewaunee at 5 a.m., only to have to turn around and go back.


MICHAEL BARTELME cemetery #16 From Der Nord Westen, 17 Aug. 1905: Death Fri., after an illness of only 5 hrs., of 87-yr. old Michael Bartelme at the home of his son, Peter Bartelme, in Cooperstown. He was an old settler of our county and had a farm in Cooperstown which he turned over to his son and came to live with his daughter here, Mrs. Walter Pellett. A few days before his death, still enjoying the best of health, he had gone to Cooperstown to pay a visit to his son. He fell ill there Fri. morning and died after a few hours. In addition to a twin brother, Mr. Bartelme leaves 2 sons and 2 daughters. The funeral was held Mon. in Cooperstown.

Bartelme also of Manitowoc. ********** DENMARK When life was in its morning and all seemed fair and bright, Peter Bartelme, Jr., was summoned to the Great Beyond from which there is no return, at the age of 16 years, 11 months and 23 days. The boy had been ill for several months, the cause of his demise being spinal meningitis. Surviving him are his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Bartelme, one sister, Mrs. Edward Kane and four brothers, Michael, David, Charles and John all of whom reside here. A large number followed the remains to their last resting place in St. James cemetery at Cooperstown. The funeral was held Saturday morning from St. James Catholic church, Rev. A.G.
