Centerville Township, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin

MELVIN F. ARENDS Melvin Arends, 20, of Hika, passed away Saturday afternoon at St. Nicholas hospital after a lingering illness. He was born on April 30, 1922, in the town of Centerville the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Arends. After completing his education, he enlisted in the army in August, 1940. He was attached to the 32nd Division and served overseas in the Aleutians. He was hospitalized and received a medical discharge in October, 1943. On October 14, 1944, he married Miss Mable Junk of Hika, and the couple lived in Hika for three and a half years. He was a member of St. George Catholic church of Hika and of the Disabled American Veterans. Survivors are: his wife; one son, his parents, and two brothers. (Survivors edited for privacy) Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Stoltenberg Funeral chapel, Cleveland, and a requiem high mass will be said at 9:30 at St. Wendel church. The Rev. L. M. Loerke will be the celebrant, and burial will be made in St. George cemetery. The body will lie in state from 7 p.m. Monday until the time of the services. GEORGE BAUMANN From Der Nord Westen, 19 Oct. 1893: Death a week ago last Mon., 09 Oct., of George Baumann in Centerville. He was born 02 July 1838 in Neumark, Bohemia, and reached the age of 55 yrs. 3 mos. 7 days. He lived his youth in his birth town where his father operated an inn and a butcher shop. When his father died in 1864, George took over the businesses. He married Theresia (nee Petermichel) on 17 May 1865, a marriage that produced 8 children, 4 of whom preceded their father in death. In 1868 they came to America on a journey that took 61 days to cross the ocean, and arrived in Manitowoc on 05 July of that year. The funeral took place last Thurs. in the Catholic Cemetery of Centerville Village, conducted by Father Olip. His wife survives. (The article gives a detailed account of his mercantile ventures.)


GEORGE BAUMANN From Der Nord Westen, 31 July 1902: Death Sat. in the local hospital of George J. Baumann after an illness of several months with consumption . He was born here 31 Oct. 1881 but moved to Centerville with his parents while still a boy. Both his parents died there several years ago. The deceased is survived by 2 sisters and a brother. The body was taken to Centerville and buried there Tues. morning.


THERESIA BAUMANN From Der Nord Westen, 04 Nov. 1897: Death Thurs. evening last week in Centerville, after many months of illness, of Mrs. Theresia Baumann. The deceased was born 14 Apr. 1842 in Neumark, Bohemia, and married Georg Baumann on 17 May 1865. Her husband died 09 Oct. 1893. The marriage produced 8 children, of whom 4 are still living. Two children married, of whom Theresia, the wife of Gustav Scheibe, died Aug. 1891, and Margarethe, who is the wife of Carl Keune, Jr. Mrs. Baumann came to America in 1868, settling in Manitowoc, but moving to Centerville in 1882. Mrs. Baumann fell ill in June this year. It has been a blow to the survivors, having lost 3 family members in the last 6 mos. The funeral will take place tomorrow morning in Village Centerville, conducted by Rev. W. Dejalle.


ANNA BUCHBERGER Mrs. Anna Buchberger, 91, died Thursday night at the home of a son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kress, of Cleveland where she had made her home since 1941. Death followed extended illness. Funeral services will be Monday at Stoltenberg Funeral Chapels, Cleveland, and at St. Wendel Catholic Church. The Rev. Leo Ott will officiate and burial will be in St. George Cemetery, Cleveland. Mrs. Buchberger, nee Huser, was born in December of 1871 in Outagamie County, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Michael Huser. She was married to John Buchberger and the couple resided in the Town of Wilson, Sheboygan County, until coming to the Town of Centerville and operating a farm. She was a member of St. Ann Christian Mothers Society of the church. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Joseph Kress, Mrs. Walter Thieleke and Mrs. Henry Matthias of Cleveland; a son, Joseph, of Cleveland, 14 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren. MARIA URSULA FEHRENBACH From Der Nord Westen, 31 Dec. 1896: Death of Mrs. Maria Ursula Fehrenbach in the home of her son-in-law Edward Kohn in Centerville. She was the widow of Anton Fehrenbach who died 14 yrs. ago. She suffered for several weeks with a heavy cold from which she never recovered and died at 6 a.m. Mon. morning, at age 78. The funeral is taking place this morning at 10 a.m. at the Catholic Church in Centerville. Professor William Dejalle will provide the requiem. The deceased was born in Belikan, Canton Aargau, Switzerland, married in 1850 and came to American with her husband in 1852. They settled in Centerville Village which has been their home for over 40 yrs. She leaves 7 children, in good circumstances, 34 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. 4 of her children live Menomenee, Mich. – Mrs. Leisen, Mrs. Herrmann, Joseph and John Fehrenbach; 2 live in Chilton – Mrs. Gallogly and Mrs. John Berger; and Mrs. Edward Kohn lives here in Centerville.

CATHERINE JACKL From Der Nord Westen, 13 Mar. 1902: Death from consumption in Menominee, Michigan, on 01 Mar. of Mrs. Joseph Jackel nee Katie Grundheber. She was born in Centerville and reached the age of 30 yrs. 1 mo. 8 days. She leaves her husband, an employee in the brewery of Leiser & Henes, and 2 children, the youngest being 14 days old. Her body was taken to Centerville, where her sorrowing mother and stepfather reside, and was buried there Monday.


JACOB KESTLY From Der Nord Westen, 30 Apr. 1903: Jacob Kestly, eminent resident of Town Centerville, died Tues. evening. He had gone out to visit his neighbor, Wilhelm Strattmann, and left his house about 9 p.m. When he failed to come home a search was begun and it was learned that he had left Strattmann’s house, but nothing more. His body was found about 3 o’clock Wed. morning in a millstream that flows through Strattmann’s property and is presently filled with about 15 ft. of water. No doubt, after leaving for home, he was crossing Strattmann’s property and slipped into the swollen stream. Jacob Kestly was a settler well-known throughout the whole county and had operated a farm in Centerville for many years. He sold it 2 yrs. ago and moved into Village Centerville in retirement. He was 76 and leaves his wife and 11 children. His sudden death will bemourned, not only in Town Centerville, but throughout the whole county.


ANNA MARIA KRAUS ONE OF CITY’S OLDEST RESIDENTS CALLED BY DEATH Mrs. Kraus, Resident here 62 Years, Passes Away at Age of 94 Death claimed Mrs. Anna Kraus, widow of the late Simon Kraus at the home of her son, Alois Kraus, 1109 South Tenth street early today, death being due to infirmities of age. Mrs. Kraus being 94 years old at the time of her demise. Mrs. Kraus as born in Germany Nov. 4, 1822 and was married there, coming to America 62 years ago. The family resided at Milwaukee and later located to Centerville, this county. Three sons, Joseph of Charles City Ia.; Michael of Centerville, and Alois of this city, survive. Eleven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren also survive. The funeral will be held Saturday morning from the home and services and burial will be held at St. George’s church at Centerville. SIMON KRAUS From Der Nord Westen, 28 June 1906: Too late for inclusion in last week's newspaper, news was received that Simon Kraus in Centerville, father of our well-known fellow citizen Alois Kraus, died Monday last week. Mr. Kraus was born 06 February 1810 in Bavaria and was easily one of the earliest settlers in our county, arriving in Centerville over 53 years ago where he established a small brewery which he operated for a long time. Several years ago he made a trip to Germany with the above named son and spent several months in his native home. For the last few years he has been confined to his bed. He leaves 5 sons. The funeral was held last Thursday in the Catholic Cemetery of Centerville.


ANNA KRESS From Der Nord Westen, 28 May 1896: (From the correspondent in Centerville, 27 May) Death 13 May of widow Anna Maria Kress, of stomach cancer. She was born 1835 in New York State, and in 1852 married Nikolas Kress, who died 7 mos. ago. In 1854 they came to Town Centerville to live. The deceased leaves a father, age 93, and 10 grown children of whom the youngest is 19. Burial was Fri. morning at the Catholic Cemetery.


NICHOLAS KRESS From Der Nord Westen, 31 Oct. 1895: (From the correspondent in Hika, 29 Oct.) Death Thurs. evening of Nicolaus Kress, age 71, as a result of a stroke. He had been stricken in the barn the Sun. before. He was a widower with 10 children. All the children are married except 3 girls, one of whom is a mute. His burial was Sun. morning in the Catholic Cemetery.


JOHN LANG The funeral of John Lang, an aged resident of Centerville took place on Saturday morning from the home to St. George's church, with interment in the church cemtery. Mr. Lang had been sick over a year, and was helplessly paralyzed for the last three months. He was 77 years old. An aged mother lived with him up to her death only a little more than a year ago. Mr. Lang's wife died 18 years ago. One son, John at Mantiowoc and a number of grandchildren as well as an adopted son Hugo, with whom he made his home, survive him. KATHERINA LANG From Der Nord Westen, 26 July 1906: Death Tuesday last week in Centerville from cancer of Mrs. Katharina Lang (nee Froeckel). She had been ill for the last seven weeks and had been blind for the past 20 years. She was born 22 Oct. 1840 in Bohemia and was married for a period of 3 years with Mr. Grundhoefer; for the last 32 years she has been happily married to her now surviving husband John Lang. Of their 4 children, only Mrs. Mary Sturm in Manitowoc is still living. A son John, of the first marriage, also survives. The funeral was held at 10 a.m. Thursday led by Rev. Nickel in Centerville.


AUG. J. PROWINSKY From Der Nord Westen, 04 Oct. 1900: A death occurred in Centerville, that of 49-yr. old August Provinski of cancer. His funeral was held Fri. morning.


BERNARD PROWINSKY From Der Nord Westen, 12 Nov. 1908: Death Saturday in Centerville of Bernhard A. Provinsky at age 16 yrs. 9 mos. 6 days, of diabetes. The funeral was Monday.


J. ROBERT PROWINSKY From Der Nord Westen, 11 May 1905: 14-yr. old Robert Provinski in Town Centerville died recently of diabetes.


THERESA SCHEIBE From Der Nord Westen, 27 Aug. 1891: Death on 20 Aug. in Centerville of Theresia Scheibe, wife of Gustav A. Scheibe, and daughter of Georg and Theresia Baumann. The deceased was born 06 May 1868 in Manitowoc Co. She married Gustav A. Scheibe on 04 Feb. 1890 and is survived by her husband, one child, her parents, and sisters. The funeral took place last Sun. afternoon at the Catholic Church in the village of Centerville, with Father Hellstern conducting the service. Mourners came from all over the county, from Sheboygan and from Chicago.


REUBEN SCHNEIDER From Der Nord Westen, 04 July 1889: Death on Sat. of a 6-yr. old son of Mr. Albert Schneider in Centerville, with the burial on Monday.


CATHARINA SCHULTE From Der Nord Westen, 26 Apr. 1894: Death in Centerville last week of 72 yr. old Mrs. F. Schulte, an old resident of the town. She was buried Thurs. in the Catholic Cemetery in Centerville.


ARTHUR J. SCHURRER Arthur J. Schurrer, 63, of the Village of Cleveland, died Wednesday morning at St. Nicholas Hospital, Sheboygan, following a lingering illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Stoltenberg Funeral Chapels, Cleveland. The Rev. Thomas Peeters will officiate and burial will be in St. Gregory Cemetery, Cleveland. Military graveside services wil be conducted by the Cleveland Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8974. Mr. Schurrer was born Sept. 3, 1908, in the Town of Centerville, son of the late Hugo and Barbara Diener Schurrer. He served in the United States Army Sixth Armour Division for three years during World War II. After service he was an auto mechanic for Schurrer Motor Sales, Cleveland, until 1953 when he joined his father in Schurrer's Tavern, Hika. The tavern has been operated by the Schurrer family for 73 years. He was a member of the Manitowoc County Tavern League, organizer, charter member and past post commander of the Cleveland Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8974. Survivors include a brother, Edwin, of Sheboygan, a half-brother, Theodore, of Oshkosh, a sister, Mrs. Ann Aingelton, of Cleveland and two nephews. His parents and a sister preceded him in death. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Friday where a memorial service will be held at 8 p.m. by Father peeters and the Cleveland VFW Post service will be held at 8:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Cleveland VFW Post.
