STEVE ELLIOTT 91 YEAR OLD RESIDENT OF CITY PASSES Stephen Elliott Dies After Week’s Illness at Home Here One of Two Rivers most colorful figures for nearly half a century, and it is believed, the oldest pioneer of this city, Stephen Elliott 91, passed away shortly before nine o’clock last night at his home, 2109 Polk Street, after a week’s illness due to pneumonia. Prior to his affliction, Mr. Elliott was in apparently in good health despite his ninety-one years. Born in Canada Born at Broxville, Canada, 2 January 1844, Stephen removed with his parents when he was 19 years of age to Cheboygan, Michigan, and after a few years of residence in that city the family came to Manitowoc Co. settling on a farm at Two Creeks. Forty years ago Mr. Elliott came to this city and conducted a saloon on Jefferson street which was later taken over by J.A. Geimer. After leaving the saloon business, Mr. Elliott spent a few years in the fishing industry, later abandoning that trade to again start a saloon on Seventeenth street, where the Hamilton paint shop is now located. In his youth, Mr. Elliott sailed the lakes on several large boats, and in 1906 the pioneer homesteaded land near the Two Rivers lighthouse. He has many friends in this city and surrounding territory who were shocked to learn of his death, although the past week it was not unexpected considering his advanced age. He was married three times, and of the first union one son, Robert, residing at Cheboygan, Mich., survives. Four children were born during his second marriage. They are Clarence and Elmer of this city, Mrs. Charles Hooper of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Mrs. Charles Smith of East DePere. Burial Thursday About forty-four years ago he was united in marriage to Catherine Lahey, who still survives, with three sons, William, Edward and Thomas, all of this city. There are also twenty-seven grandchildren and five great- grandchildren surviving. One son of Mr. Elliott, James, was killed August 18, 1918 while fighting in the World war. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at Grace Congregational church, with Rev. Thomas Hawkes officiating. Burial will be at Pioneers’ Rest Cemetery (sic). Two Rivers Reporter – Tuesday Feb. 17, 1931 ******* (no stone/cem. printout shows him in Forest View) ********* News article: PIONEER CELEBRATES 84TH BIRTHDAY Among the most popular of the early pioneers who are still with us is Stephen Elliott, who celebrated his 84th birthday anniversary at his home on Polk Street last Saturday. A large number of friends and relatives gathered with him and Mrs. Elliott for the occasion and "Steve", as he is familiarly known by many, spun yarns of the time when he sailed the Great Lakes, the guests played cards and a fine lunch served. Mr. Elliott, who was born in Canada came down the lake with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm Elliott on board a schooner and one afternoon they landed at Sheboygan, on the same day that the steamer Phoenix was destroyed by fire near that port and over 200 lives were lost in the disaster. That was 76 years ago. The family made their way to this vicinity and settled on a farm and when Stephen reached his majority he went sailing on the Great Lakes. Later he went back to farming again near Two Creeks. He was popular for his witicisms and story telling as well as his good qualities of manhood. For the past 32 years he has been a resident of Two Rivers. For a time he was captain of the fishtug Karet, which operated here and also mate on the Two Rivers Manufacturing Company's steamer, Temple Emery. Now, although he has reached over four score years, he is still active and in excellent health. On his land up near Twin River Point Light, he cuts his winter supply of fuel and with horse and wagon, unaided, brings it to his home here where he and Mrs. Elliott are spending their old age together and in comfort and happiness. Mr. and Mrs. Elliott have seven sons and two daughters, Robert of Cheboygan, Mich.; Clarence, William, Elmer, Ed and Thomas of this city; Neil of Green Bay and Mrs. Charles Hooper of Cincinatti and Mrs. Charles Smith of DePere. One of his sons, James, gave his life fighting in the World War and lies buried on one of the battle fields. The Reporter unites with many in congratulations to this venerable pioneer. May he still enjoy many happy years of life with his family and many friends. The Reporter, Fri., Jan. 11, 1924 ********* The following is his son's obituary. WILLIAM F. ENGELLAND (d. 1955) William F. Engelland Sr., 70, (photo) widely known Town of Two Rivers farmer and earlier a cheesemaker and father of Fire Chief William Engelland of Two Rivers, died unexpectedly of a heart attack at his farm home at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at St. John Lutheran Church, Two Rivers, the Rev. W.G. Haase officiating. Interment will be in Forest View Cemetery, Two Rivers. Mr. Engelland was born in the Town of Mishicot Jan. 11, 1876, a son of the late Henning Peter and Catherine Leesch Engelland. He attended and was graduated from the Pleasant View district school in the Town of Mishicot. At the age of 14, on the death of his father, he assisted his mother in the conduct of the cheese making business and in farming at Skubal's Corners, Town of Mishicot. After attending the University of Wisconsin dairy school at Madison for a year he returned to puruse (sic) the cheese making trade at Skubal's Corners, remodeling and refurnishing the plant. The factory was destroyed by fire about a year ago. Mr. Engelland served on the board of the Pleasant View School for about 20 years. He then purchased the present farm in the Town of Two Rivers in 1914, and operated the farm as well as running the old Rangeline Creamery in the Town of Two Rivers. He also acquired the former Herman Dreier farm, located on Highway 42, 19 years ago, now operated by his son, Henry. For several years Mr. Engelland served on the board of the Rangeline School, Town of Two Rivers, and for a number of years, in the 1920s was road supervisor for the township. On Oct. 9, 1900, Mr. Engelland married the former Bertha Louise Retzloff of the Town of Two Creeks at St. John Lutheran Church at Two Rivers. Manitowoc Herald Times, Wednesday, February 16, 1955 P. 15 ******** News article FARMER SUFFERS A BIG FIRE LOSS WEDNESDAY Fine Modern Barn of William Engelland is Destroyed with Contents Fire on the farm of William Engelland of the Town of Two Rivers caused a big loss Wednesday night when it destroyed the large, modern barn, 18 head of cattle, four horses, a large quantity of hay and some farm machinery. The loss it is estimated will be close to $10,000, about half of which is covered by insurance. The cause of the fire is unknown, possibly due to spontaneous combustion, incendiarism or some careless prowler with a cigarette. However, the barn which was only recently greatly improved with a concrete stable on the ground floor and all modern barn equipment is only a mass of ruin and ashes. The cattle which burned in the barn were mostly fine graded Holsteins. The loss of the cattle and horses alone totals at least $2500. The fire was discovered by elder daughter at 9:30 when the children were about to retire. The elder daughter, aged 16, was pulling down the shade when she saw the barn aflame on one end. Mr. and Mrs. William Engelland sleep over at the Range Lone Cheese Factory which is a mile and a half away. Two daughters and a little boy were at home alone. The daughter hastily dressed and rushed out to save the cattle and horses. She was unable to get at the horses, the lever releasing the cattle from the stanchions being on the side where the flames were too severe. She was unable to release them. She rushed back into the house and telephoned her parents and several neighbors. The nearby farmers were aroused and hastened to the scene of the blaze in autos and on horseback. Some were thoughtful to bring pails. They saved the house, the granary and other buildings from destruction and these buildings were on fire several times. The fire lighted the sky to the north of here with a red glow and several from here motored out to investigate. The loss is a severe blow to Mr. Engelland. He had a fine herd of Holstein cattle, good horses and a barn to be proud of. Its destruction in a few hours with all the contents is enough to discourage the stoutest heart but Mr. Engelland is already planning to rebuild. He knows that lamentation and regret will avail nothing. But a resolute purpose and action will win against odds. ANDREW FORTIN (d. 1959) Former Pitcher Andrew Fortin Dies at Age 57 TWO RIVERS-Andrew Thomas (Lefty) Fortin, one of the top baseball pitchers to ever play for a Two Rivers team, died early Thursday evening while working at Paragon Electric Co. He was 57. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Monday at the St. James Episcopal Church, Manitowoc, with the Rev. William Harvey officiating. Burial will be at the Forest View Cemetery, Two Rivers. "Wee Andy," as he was known to thousands of baseball fans throughout the Midwest, was born on Aug. 29, 1901 at Minneapolis the son of the late Edmund and Harriet Jirard Fortin. He attended grade school and high school at Minneapolis at which time he played football and baseball. On Oct. 12, 1921, he married the former Gertrude Egner at Minneapolis. Played at 16 When Fortin was 16 years of age he tried out his talented left-wing for the Fawn Athletic Cub of Minneapolis. He remained with the amateur aggregation until 1919 when he was signed with the Aberdeen club of the South Dakota League, later going to Langford, South Dakota. In 1921, Fortin left the Western city for a fling at semi-pro ball, joining the Wausau Lumberjacks where he pitched brilliant ball for five years. In 1927, Fortin was attracted by the mighty Mirro team which was being formed by Ty Lober and Seymour Althen. At the time Manager Lober was organizing a powerful ball club which included players like Lenny Zelinski, Dr. A.V. Delmore, Chuch Wetmore, Ray Handy, Walter Warden, Tommy Lawrence, Elmer (Mac) Muldowney and the great Ernest (Red) Evans, to name just a few. When Fortin joined the Cool City forces which at the time were in the powerful Midwest League which included the Racine Belles, Beloit Fairies, the Kenosha Simmons, the Milwaukee Oils and Reds, Sheboygan Charis and Manitowoc, he was used as the one-two pitching punch. "Red" Evans was the right hander and Fortin was the lefty and the combination was paractically unbeatable. At one time the team won the state championship. Games were played at the old Hartung park and crowds of more than 3,000 would jam the bleachers to see "Red" and "Lefty" hurl. The Mirro baseball team was regarded as one of the strongest in the midwest and at that time everybody went to the ball game when a Sunday afternoon rolled around. Was Greatest Fortin was the ace left-handed pitcher in this area during his day and his dips and sharp breaks which roared in from the portside kept baffling the batters for many years. After Fortin left the mound, he continued to be highly interested in baseball and for a time managed the Two Rivers club. He was a member of the Old-timers Baseball Assn. For many years, Fortin was employed at the Mirro Co. and six years ago took up a position at Paragon where he was a member of the Goodfellowship Club. He also was a member of the Two Rivers Lodge 200 F. & A.M. Among Fortin's many accomplishment, he hurled four no-hitters prior to coming to the city and was the first pitcher to hurl at Hartung Park and the first moundman to appear on the hill when Walsh Field was officially opened. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. William Bennington, of Manitowoc; three grandchildren, Dean, Mary Jane and James Andrew Bennington, and five sisters, Mrs. Euguen Begin, of Duluth, Mrs. Gerald Cooler, Minneapolis, Mrs. Cecil Mc Ardle, of Coon Rapids, Minn., Mrs. Raleigh Newton, of San Pedro, Calif., and Mrs. Bert Marchand, of Los Angeles, Calif. HENRY P. FUNK To Hold Inquest Into Death of Two Rivers Man Killed on Road Accident Proves Fatal to Henry P. Funk; Jury Meets Tonight County authorities today ordered an inquest into the death of Henry P. Funk, 41, of Two Rivers route 2, who was fatally injured in an accident involving four automobiles on Memorial drive approximately halfway between Manitowoc and Two Rivers at midnight Friday. Funk died of a basal skull fracture at Holy Family hospital Sunday morning at 2:30 o'clock. (snip-grand jury info) Mystery still surrounds the manner in which Funk came to his death. Funk's car skidded off the road, went into the ditch and the rear end swung around up against a fence. George Pieschel, also of Two Rivers route 2, attempted to pull Funk's car out of the ditch. One effort failed and Pieschel backed his car onto the shoulder of the road to shorten the hitch and get better traction. The Pieschel car was struck by two other automobiles coming from Two Rivers toward Manitowoc and after these accidents Funk's body was found lying in the center lane of the highway about 75 feet from the Pieschel car which had been swung around at a 90-degree angle. Dist Att. Danielson said his investigation showed that the Pieschel car was struck first by an automobile driven by Clarence Keubke, 509 Huron street, and later by a car driven by Harley Van Lanne, 819 Buffalo street. Several witnesses to the accident will be called to testify at the inquest, Mr. Danielson said. Born in County Funk was removed to the hospital by Russell Franke, 1331 S. 15th street, and Melvin Gulseth, 945 N. 11nd street. Gulseth was a passenger in the car driven by Van Lannen.
