SARAH A. ADAMS Sarah A. Adams, 20, of Kiel, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, (photo) as a result of an automobile accident. She was born Nov. 11, 1988, in Norway, Maine, daughter of Erick and Anne (King) Adams. Sarah was a graduate of Kiel High School Class of 2007. While at Kiel High School, she was involved in cross country, basketball and track. She currently was enrolled at Martin School of Cosmetology. Sarah was also employed at Riverbend in Kohler as a housekeeper. She was a member of Kiel Alliance church and in her free time enjoyed doing artwork. Survivors include her parents; a brother; a sister; her grand- parents. She is further survived by her aunts and uncles ; other relatives and many friends. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) Sarah was preceded in death by two grandfathers: Ernest Adams and Lee Noble. Funeral services for Sarah will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, at Kiel Alliance Church, 310 Fremont St., Kiel. Friends may call at the church from 2 p.m. until the time of services. ANNA ARNOLD Mrs. Jacob Arnold, 92, former resident of Kiel, passed away Tuesday afternoon at Menominee Falls where she had been residing with a son, Milton, and a daughter, Mrs. Anna Arnold. Nee Anna Kazmeier, she was born near Kiel and lived in the vicinity many years. She has 10 children surviving her, all widely scattered throughout the United States. Her husband preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at Menominee Falls and interment will be made Saturday afternoon in the Rockville cemetery near Kiel. CHARLOTTE ARNOLD On Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock in her home on the Plank Road, Mrs. Christoph Arnold –nee Lotte Stark died from pneumonia following an operation. The deceased was born in Diehnheim, Germany on July 10, 1847 and had reached the age of 69 years, 7 months and 24 days. In 1853 she came to America with her parents who settled in Town Schleswig. In 1866 she married Christoph Arnold and they moved to a farm where their son George lives now. Twelve years ago they retired to the home where Mrs. Arnold died. The marriage was blessed with 13 children of whom six have died. Her husband and 7 children, namely Christoph and Simon in Milwaukee, Lizzie Henschel in Sturgeon Bay, Clara Oakley in Ohio, George, Eduard and Dora here survive her. Additionally, three brothers and one sister and a number of grandchildren also survive her. The burial took place on Wednesday afternoon with Pastor Rech officiating at the Rockville Cemetery. CHRISTOPH ARNOLD Christoph Arnold of Town Schleswig Dies on Saturday Kiel - (Special) - Christoph Arnold, 70, passed away at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, at the farm home in the town of Schleswig four miles northeast of here, following an 11-month illness. He was born on the Arnold homestead on Highway 57 southeast of Kiel Nov. 2, 1869, son of Mr. and Mrs. Christoph Arnold, Sr. As a youth, he became an apprentice blacksmith, and learned the trade from William Haack, of Kiel. In 1891 he went to Milwaukee and operated his own shop there until 1933. While there on May 11, 189_, he was married to Katherine Woe_ky, of that city. In 1933 the couple came to make their home on the present 20-acre farm. Survivors are his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Al (Viola) Emmer, Milwaukee; two grandchildren; two brothers, Simon, of Milwaukee, and Edwin, near Kiel; three sisters, Mrs. Louis Henschel, of Sturgeon Bay, Mrs. Mathias Nett, of Kiel, and Mrs. Leo Kimmel, of Cleveland. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the Meiselwitz funeral home here, the Rev. Harold O. Grunwald, pastor of Zion Lutheran church of Louis Corners, officiating. CHRISTOPHER ARNOLD CALLED BY DEATH Christoph Arnold, one of the old-time resident of the town of Schleswig, passed away on Saturday forenoon at 11 o’clock, at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John Engel, where he had been making his home the past three years. Mr. Arnold was born in Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany, May 1, 1840, and came to America at the age of 76 years with his parents, who settled in the town of Herman, Sheboygan county, on a farm. He was united in marriage in 1866 to Charlotte Stark, the couple later making their home on a farm in the town of Schleswig, where they resided many years. Later they lived on the Plank road east of Kiel. Mrs. Arnold died in 1896. Mr. Arnold always enjoyed good health up to last summer when he began to ail with a complication of diseases, which finally caused his death. He reached the advanced age of 80 years, 5 months and 15 days, and is survived by three sons, three daughters, 10 grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Hollensteiner. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, interment being in the Rockville cemetery, Rev. W. Rech officiated. - 1920.


EDWIN ARNOLD Rites Held Monday For Edwin Arnold Funeral services were held Monday for Edwin Arnold, 71, from St. Peter's Evangelical and Reformed church. Mr. Arnold died at his home Friday. The Rev. E.L. Worthman conducted the funeral services and burial was made in the Rockville cemetery. He was born May 16, 1883, in the town of Schleswig, the son of the late Christoph and Lottie Stark Arnold. March 21, 1911, he was married to Miss Wriedt. A retired mason, he lived all his life in the town of Schleswig. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, two sons, 13 grand- children; two sisters, Mrs. Matthias Nett of Kiel, and Mrs. Leo Kimmel of Cleveland, Ohio, and one brother, Simon of Milwaukee. 07 April 1955 (no newspaper name)

ELTON ARNOLD Elton O. Arnold, 35, of R. 2, Kiel, died at this home Tuesday evening after an illness of several months. He was born Nov. 15, 1924, in the town of Schleswig, the son of Edwin and Emma (Wriedt) Arnold. He attended Kiel public Schools and had been employed as a driver by the Crystal Lake Crushed Stone Co. He was a member of St. Peter’s Evangelical and Reformed church, Kiel. On Sept. 4, 1946 he was united in marriage with Miss Marilyn Bowe at Ebenezer Evangelical and Reformed Church in Chilton. Following their marriage they lived in Kiel, except the last three years in which they lived in town Schleswig. Survivors besides his wife, are two daughters, Jean and Nancy, and one son, Edwin, all at home; his mother, Mrs. Emma Arnold of Kiel; two sisters, Mrs. Alvin Manz, Kiel, and Mrs. Frank Geier, Germantown, and one brother, Eugene, of R. 1, Elkhart Lake. His father preceded him in death in April 1955. Funeral services will be held at St. Peter Evangelical and Reformed Church in Kiel, with the Rev. Vernon E. Jaberg, pastor, officiating. EMMA ARNOLD (d. 1953) Mrs. Emma Arnold, 81, of Kiel, wife of the late Philip Arnold, died Thursday morning at the home. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm. Saturday at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel. The Rev. E. L. Worthman will officiate and burial will be in the Rockville Cemetery. She was born Emma Voland in Thiensville, Wis., in 1872, and a few years later her parents moved to Schleswig, where she was married to Philip Arnold. They moved to Kiel in 1912. Her husband died in 1945. Survivors are a daughter,Mrs. Frank Sternbeck of New Holstein; son, Oscar P. of Kiel; sister, Mrs. Adela Raquet of Schleswig; two brothers, Fred of Kiel and Philip of San Diego, Calif.; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. EMMA ARNOLD (d. 1971) Mrs. Emma Arnold, 81, of 618 St. Paul Street, Kiel, widow of Edwin, died Wednesday, February 3, at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient two days. The former Emma Wriedt was born on August 18, 1889, in the Town of Eaton, Manitowoc County, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wriedt. She attended Woodland Park School, and on March 21, 1911, was married to Mr. Arnold at Bethlehem United Church of Christ in the Town of Schleswig. The couple lived in Schleswig until 1955 when they moved to Kiel. Mr. Arnold died in 1955. She was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ, Kiel, and its Women's Guild and Frauen Verein. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Selma Manz of Kiel and Mrs. Frank Geier of Germantown; a son, Eugene, Route 1, Elkhart Lake; five sisters, Mrs. Edwin Ninmer, Mrs. Ben Strassmann, Mrs. George Ninmer and Mrs. Viola Ninmer, all of rural Kiel, and Mrs. Ralph Mangum of North Carolina; a brother, August, St. Nazianz; 15 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, a sister, and a brother. Funeral services were held Friday at St. Peter United Church of Christ, Kiel, the Rev. Hohn Baumann, pastor, officiating. EUGENE ARNOLD Eugene Arnold, 61 of 1037 Seventh St., Kiel, was dead on arrival at Calumet Memorial Hospital, Chilton, Tuesday evening, after apparently being stricken by a heart attack at his home. He was born April 10, 1922, in the town of Schleswig, a son of the late Edwin and Emma Wriedt Arnold. He attended school in Kiel. On June 28, 1941, Mr. Arnold married Louise Steinhardt in the town of Herman. They made their home in the town of Russell, and then the town of Rhine, before moving to Kiel in 1975. Mr. Arnold worked at A.A. Laun furniture Co., and at Lake-to-Lake Dairy, Kiel retiring in 1981. He was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ in Kiel. Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Ken (Kathleen) Werdeo of Kiel, Mrs. Roger (Judith) Schneider of Vincennes, Ind., and Mrs. Steven (Laurie) Krebsbach of New Holstein; four sons, Allan and David, both of Kiel, Robert of rural Kiel and Rodney at home; 12 grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Selma Manz of Kiel and Mrs. Frank Geier of Germantown. He was preceded in death by one son and one brother. Funeral services will be Friday at Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel with the Rev. John Baumann, pastor of St. Peter UCC, officiating. ISABEL E. ARNOLD Mrs. Isabel Arnold nee Hodge, 76 of N89 W16289 Main St. died Saturday, Nov. 4 at Community Memorial Hospital, Menomonee Falls. Mrs. Arnold was born in Menasha. For the past 39 years the family has been residents of Menomonee Falls. She is survived by her husband. Mr. Arnold was born at Schleswig, near Kiel on Jan. 8, 1857, and has been a life long resident of this state in which he was a farmer for 35 years. On Nov. 22, 1883, he was married to Miss Anna Kazmeier of Kiel and for more than 30 years they lived on a farm two miles from Kiel where nine children were born to them. In 1915 they moved to Edgar, Wis. on a farm, and in 1919, came to Menomonee Falls to make their home. In Nov. 1933, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Mr. Arnold led an active life until a few months ago. MARILYN ARNOLD KUESTER Marilyn J. Arnold Kuester, 72, of N. 2694 Hayton Road, new Holstein was looking forward to being with her Lord Jesus Christ and entered into his presence on Friday, Sept. 1, 2000 at her home following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born January 6, 1928 in Chilton, daughter of the late Jerome and Alice Lorenz Bowe. She attended Chilton Elementary School and was a 1946 Chilton High School graduate. Marilyn married Elton Arnold in Chilton on September 4, 1946. He preceded her in death on August 9, 1960. Marilyn married Harvey Kuester, School Hill on September 21, 1963 in New Holstein. He preceded her in death on October 6, 1990. Marilyn was formerly employed by Daun Bus Service for 17 years transporting kindergarten and handicapped students. She was also formerly employed at Hansen Glove Factory, Kiel. Her outlook on life was encouraging while directing her loved ones to faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. She acknowledged her sinful nature realizing there was nothing in or of herself to make her right with God, accepting Jesus Christ as her only provision for sin, asking His forgiveness and invited Christ into her hert to take control of her life. She trusted in the promise of II Cor. 5:1 "Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in Heaven, not built by human hands" and Philippians 1:21 "For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain." Her sense of humor, words of encouragement and weekly letter writing will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Survivors include her daughters, Jean Arnold (Robert) Spaulding, Dallas, TX, Nancy Arnold Suchorski, Redding, Calif., one son, Edwin (Karen) Arnold, Sheboygan, and four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She is further survived by eight brothers and sisters, Kenneth Bowe, Chilton, Donald (Shirley) Bowe, Manitowoc, Barbara (Walllace) Daubner, Ellison Bay, Beverly (Donald) Pfiel, New Holstein, Beatrice (Dean) Pingel, Hilbert, Marlene Puyleart, Sheboygan, Dennis (Linda) Bowe, Kiel and Leonard (Mary) Bowe, New Holstein. Further survivors include three step-children, Everett Kuester, Valders, Merlin (Geraldine) Kuester, Kiel, Gloria (James) Buchman, New Holstein and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Amy Suchorski, one brother, David Bowe and one brother-in-law, Daniel Puyleart. MATHILDA ARNOLD Mrs. Oscar P. Arnold, 82, of 1010 Sixth Street, Kiel died Friday morning at Willowdale Nursing Home, New Holstein, where she had been a resident for one month. The former Mae Trindl(sic) was born March 10, 1898, in Milwaukee, daughter of George and Bertha Sens Trindl. She attended school in Milwaukee. On August 22, 1925 she married Oscar Arnold in Milwaukee. The couple then moved to Kiel where they resided their entire married life. Mrs. Arnold was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Kiel, the Presbyterian Women's Organization, the Kiel Chapter of Order of Eastern Star 281 and the Kiel Frauen Verein. Survivors are her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Robert Pritchard of Kiel, a son, George of Washington, D.C; two sisters, Mrs. Helen Argust of Columbia, South Carolina, and Mrs. Annie Vogrin of Kiel; and five grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Tim Thorstenson officiated. Burial was in Schleswig Cemetery in Rockville. OSCAR P. ARNOLD Oscar P. Arnold, 79, of 1010 Sixth Street, Kiel, died this morning at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient for the past two days. He was born June 27, 1901, in Kiel, a son of Phillip and Emma Voland Arnold. He graduated from Kiel High School, attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering, and graduated from Marquette University. Mr. Arnold married Mae Trindel August 22, 1925 in Milwaukee. The couple lived in Kiel their entire married life. Mrs. Arnold died July 4, 1980. He was employed at Greve Hardware Company, Kiel, until 1942. He was then Kiel city clerk for a year, and was employed at H.G. Weber Company until his retirement in 1970. Mr. Arnold served on the Kiel Board of Education for 26 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church, Kiel, and was a former elder of the church. He was a member of the Kiel Masonic Lodge, F.& A.M. No. 336 and of Eastern Star Lodge No. 281. Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Joanne) Pritchard, of Kiel; a son, George of Washington, D.C.; five Grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Wiletta Sternbeck of Bayport, Minnesota. Funeral services were held Wednesday at First Presbyterian church, Kiel. The Rev. Joe V. Anderson, pastor officiated. Burial was in the Schleswig Cemetery, Rockville. He was born on December 12, 1862, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Philip Arnold, Sr. On September 10, 1889 he was married to Miss Emma Voland of the town of Schleswig. The couple operated a farm in the town of Schleswig before moving to their present home 30 years ago. Mr. Arnold also followed the carpenter trade and served for many years as the sexton of the Rockville cemetery. He is survived by his wife and two children, Mrs. Frank (Willetta) Sternbeck of New Holstein, and Oscar Arnold of this city. Five grandchildren also survive. The remains lay in state at the family residence on Saturday night and at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home on Sunday. Funeral services were held at the funeral home at 2 o'clock Sunday, with the Rev. R.E. ANITA GAYLE AUSTINSON Anita ""Gayle"" Austinson Anita ""Gayle"" Austinson, 76, of New Holstein, died unexpectedly on Sunday morning, December 16, 2007 at her home. She was the former Anita Kahl, born March 10, 1931 in Dallas, WI daughter of the late Athly Sr. & Lorena (Hutchison) Kahl. Gayle attended Barron County School and North Central Technical College. On March 17, 1950 she married DuWayne Austinson at Prairie Farm, WI. He preceded her in death on December 23, 1983. Gayle owned and operated a motel in Long Lake and gained many lasting and cherished friendships. She had recently moved back to the New Holstein area. She enjoyed the outdoors and was active in the Big 4 Sportman's Club of Long Lake. She was an avid hunter and trapshooter, and was active in many community groups. Gayle enjoyed antique collecting, loved spending her time and money at her ""job"" at the casino in Carter, singing and playing guitar and was an excellent softball player in her younger years. She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. DUWAYNE AUSTINSON DuWayne Austinson, age 55, of 103 South Fourth Avenue, St. Nazianz, was pronounced dead on arrival at Manitowoc Memorial Hospital Friday morning after suffering a heart attack at his home. He was born May 11, 1928, at Clear Lake, son of the late Orville and Vion Lewis Austinson. He attended Clear Lake Schools. He was married to Gayle Kahl March 17, 1950 at Prairie Farm. They resided at Clayton until 1967 when they moved to Kiel. Mr. Austinson was employed at the Schreiber Cheese Company at Clayton for 22 years and then 10 years he was a trucker for R-Way Furniture of Sheboygan. He retired in 1977. He was a member of the Faith Lutheran Church at Clayton. For 33 years he was a member of the Teamsters Union and he was recording secretary for them for 10 years. Survivors are his wife, three daughters, Robin Austinson, St. Nazianz; Mrs. Keith (Kelly) Detro, Boyce, Idaho; Mrs. Nicholas (Jane) Mertens, Mt. Calvary; three sons, Jeffrey, Iron River, Michigan; Scott, Menomonee Falls; and Gary, St. Nazianz; and ten grandchildren. STEVEN W. AUSTINSON Steven W. Austinson, 18, of Town of Meeme, Rt. 1, Newton, died as a result of a traffic accident early Sunday morning. CHRISTIAN BACKHAUS CALLED BY DEATH Christian Backhaus, one of Kiel’s old-time residents, passed away at his home on Monday morning at 2 o’clock, after a lingering illness with intestinal cancer, being confined to his bed for about 3-1/2 months. The deceased was born in Waldeck, Germany, April 15, 1839. At the age of 16 he came to America with his mother, who settled in the town of Rhine, Sheboygan county. He was employed in a sawmill near Kewaunee for a time, later returning to Rhine, where he was united in marriage, in 1858, to Wilhelmine Michler, the couple settling there on a farm. His wife died in September 1874, and in December of the same year he was married to Maria Kuhnitz, who survives him. In 1875 he acquired a farm near the north limits of Kiel, which he successfully operated until 16 years ago, when he disposed of the property to spend his remaining days in retirement. He lived 22 years in the home in which he passed away. Besides his second wife he leaves three sons and four daughters, namely: Louis in Kiel, William and Henry of Rhine, Mrs. John Voigt and Mrs. Ad. Warnke of Kiel, Mrs. Otto Dedering of New Holstein and Mrs. F. Luedke of Two Rivers. Seven children have preceded their father in death. He also leaves 17 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. The deceased was a man of industrious, thrifty habits; he was anxious to get on in the world and succeeded in his ambition. He was honest and upright in his dealings, accommodating and helpful to his neighbors in time of need and a practical member of the German Reformed church. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, services being held at the church, Rev. W. Rech officiating. Interment was in the family lot in the Rockville cemetery. May 1920


EDWIN BACKHAUS Edwin Backhaus, 45, town Rhine farmer, died Friday morning at 4:45 o'clock in the Sheboygan Memorial hospital, following an operation performed on Sunday. He was born April 30, 1895, in Kiel, son of William and Pauline (Dawurske) Backhaus. In 1907 he moved to the farm in town Rhine and had resided there since. Survivors are his widow, the former Esther Feldmann, of Elkhart Lake; his father, William, this city, and one sister, Mrs. Edwin Jaschob, of near Millhome. His mother died on Dec. 27, 1935. ESTHER C. BACKHAUS BIEDERWOLF Esther C. Biederwolf, 87, of 1734 Broadway Ave., Sheboygan, passed away Sunday, March 15, 1998 at her residence. She was born on June 11, 1910 in the Town of Herman, a daughter of the late August and Bertha Meyer Feldmann. Esther Feldmann and Edwin Backhaus were united in marriage on Sept. 19, 1931. He preceded her in death in 1941. She then married Bernard Biederwolf on June 30, 1956 and moved to Sheboygan. Bernard preceded her in death on Oct. 10, 1984. Esther attended school in Rhine Center and worked on the Backhaus Homestead Farm near Franklin for many years, later working at the Hansen Glove Factory in Kiel for 15 years. She was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ, Town of Rhine. Surviving Esther are her son, Wallace Biederwolf, Sheboygan; one daughter, Marjorie (Kenneth) Rowe, Sheboygan; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Lorena (Roman) Gosse, rural Cleveland. She was preceded in death by one brother, Elmer Feldmann; one grandson and one great-grandson. A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, March 18, 1998 at 6 p.m. at the Zimmer Funeral Home, 117 N. Wisconsin Dr., Howards Grove, with the Rev. Philip C. HENRY J. BACKHAUS Henry J. Backhaus, aged 69, well-known resident of this city and native of the town of Rhine, Sheboygan county, passed away at 12:50 p.m. Friday at his home 915 N. Sixth street, following an illness of six weeks. Deceased was born April 20, 1871, in the town of Rhine, the son of the late Christian and Wilhelmina (Michler) Backhaus. When he was four years of age, his parents came to Kiel where he attended local schools and the Sunday school of the St. Peter Evangelical and Reformed church. He was baptized by the late Rev. Mr. Erbe and confirmed by the late Rev. Ludwig Zenk. His marriage to Miss Martha Casper of this city was solemnized by the late Rev. John Roeck on December 26, 1894. The couple lived in Kiel for 13 years after which they moved to a farm in the town of Rhine where they lived until March 5, 1938, when they retired and returned to this city. During their former residence here, Mr. Backhaus was employed at the Kiel Wooden Ware company plant. Five children were born of this union, of whom a daughter died in infancy and a son, Roland, passed away October 10, 1932. Survivors are his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Arno (Erna) Manz and Mrs. Robert (Lilly) Platz, both of Howards Grove; one son Lester of Kiel; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Otto Dedering of New Holstein, Mrs. Fred Libke(?), Two Rivers and Mrs. Adolph Warnke of Kiel. A sister, Mrs. John Voigt, preceded him in death January 29, 1938, and a brother, Louis, December 7, 1934. Several sisters and brothers preceded him in death in infancy and youth. Mr. and Mrs. Backhaus have been devout members of St. Peter Evangelical and Reformed church of Kiel for more than 50 years. MARTHA BACKHAUS Mrs. Henry Backhaus, 78, former county resident, died Monday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lillie Platz, at Howards Grove, Sheboygan County, with whom she had been residing the past 10 years. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Peter Evangelical Reformed Church, Kiel. The Rev. E. L. Worthman will officiate and burial will be in the Rockville Cemetery. She was born Martha Casper in Germany in 1873 and at the age of 18 years came to this country. She was married to Mr. Backhaus in Kiel in 1894 and after 13 years they moved to a farm in the town of Rhine, Sheboygan County. In 1939 they returned to Kiel. Two years later Mr. Backhaus died and she went to live with her daughter. For the past 10 years Mrs. Backhaus had made her home with her daughter following her husband's death in 1941. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Platz and Mrs. Arno Manz, and a son, Lester, all of Howards Grove. A daughter died in infancy and a son, Roland, in 1932. A brother, Paul, of Fond du Lac, also survives along with nine grand- children and four great-grandchildren. MARY BACKHAUS (d. 1921) Mrs. Maria Backhaus(sic), one of the pioneer residents of Kiel, passed away at her home on Calumet Avenue on Sunday afternoon, at the age of 83 years and 10 days. Death came as a relief to her after 40 years’ suffering with rheumatism. The deceased was born May 2, 1838 in Germany and came to America in 1872, locating in Sheboygan County. In 1874 she was married to Christian Backhaus, a widower with six children and lived on a farm in the town of Rhine for six years. Forty years ago the family moved to Kiel, where she has since resided. Her husband preceded her in death, May 17, 1920. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Adolph Warnke and six step-children, namely Louis in Kiel, William in the town of Herman, Henry in the Town of Rhine, Mrs. John Voigt in Kiel, Mrs. Otto Dedering in New Holstein and Mrs. F. Luedke in Two Rivers. The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon, from the home with services in the Reformed church, Rev. W. Rech officiating. Mrs. Backhaus had been residing at New Holstein for the past year and a half. She passed away on Friday evening. The deceased was born in Germany on September 3, 1865, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Hansen. She came to America with her parents at the age of 18 years, and settled some three miles north of New Holstein. Later the family moved to Thorp, where she was united in marriage with Louis Backhaus on June 19, 1888. They continued to make their home there until 1917, when they disposed the farm and moved to Kiel. Mr. Backhaus passed away December 17, 1934. Survivors are a sister, Mrs. John Suel of New Holstein, and a brother George Hansen of Thorp. Mr. Backhaus died in 1934, and about a year and a half ago Mrs. Backhaus moved to New Holste into her sister's home. There are no children. PAULINA BACKHAUS Mrs. William Backhaus Dies At Kiel After Heart Attack Mrs. William Backhaus, aged 61 of Kiel died at her home, 625 St. Paul street Friday evening at 7:15 o'clock following a heart attack which she suffered that afternoon. Mrs. Backhaus, the former Miss Pauline Dawurske, daughter of Albert Dawurske, Sr., of Milwaukee, and the late Bertha Dawurske, was born in Pommerania, Germany, on August 6, 1874. At the age of 18 in 1893 she came to America with her parents, settling in Kiel. On May 4, 1894, she was married to William Backhaus, also of Kiel Mr. and Mrs. Backhaus resided in Kiel from the time of their marriage until 1907 when they purchased a farm in the town of Rhine, where they made their home until 1933 when they disposed of their farm to their son, Edwin. For the past two years, the couple had made their home in Kiel. Survivors are her husband, her aged father, Albert Dawurske of Milwaukee, aged 87; two children, Edwin on the homestead farm in the town of Rhine, and Mrs. Edwin (Norma) Jaschob of Millhome; one grandson, three sisters, Mrs. Herman Birr, Mrs. Henry Stevens, and Mrs. James Couey, all of Milwaukee; four brothers, Frank of Kiel, Albert of Brillion, Herman and Theodore of Milwaukee. Two brothers; Gustave and Walter, preceded her in death many years ago. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Meiselwitz Funeral Parlor at Kiel. The Rev. E. L. WILLIAM BACKHAUS Wm. Backhaus Laid to Rest Funeral services for William Backhaus, aged 73 years, who passed away last week Wednesday evening at the St. Nicholas hospital in Sheboygan, were held on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the Meiselwitz Furneral Home, and at 2 o'clock at the St. Peter Evangelical and Reformed church. The Rev. E. L. Worthman officiated at the rites. Burial was made in the Rockville cemetery. Mr. Backhaus had the misfortune of falling on the icy sidewalk on February 26th, and fracturing his left hip. Since that time he was confined at the hospital. The deceased was born in the town of Rhine on July 10, 1867, and in 1894 he was united in marriage with Pauline Dawurske of here. The couple resided in this city for a few years, and then operated a farm in the town of Rhine until 1933, when they returned to Kiel to reside. Mrs. Backhaus died six years ago. Mr. Backhaus' only son died on January 17 of this year, and his only brother died a few hours later. Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Ed. (Norma) Jaschob of near Millhome; one grandson; and three sisters, Mrs. Otto Dedering of New Holstein, Mrs. Adolph Warnke of this city, and Mrs. Fred Luebke of Two Rivers. 1941


BERTHA BALTZ Word reached this city that Mrs. Bertha Baltz, widow of the late Henry Baltz of Garnet, died suddenly from apoplexy while enroute to Valders where she was called by the serious illness of her daughter, Mrs. John Buchholtz. Mrs. Baltz arrived in this city Monday afternoon to visit her daughter, Mrs. Elmer Steinmetz who resides on State street and during the visit was apparently in the best of health. She had made arrangements for an auto from Valders to meet her here and convey her to Valders where she was going to see her daughter, Mrs. John Buchholtz who is sick. The auto, driven by Mr. Brennan, arrived here at 9:00 o’clock in the evening and Mrs. Baltz who occupied the rear seat was in the best of spirits on the trip, talked freely with Mr. Brennan and his companion during the journey until within half mile of their destination when the young men noticed that she did not respond to questions asked by them. Upon investigation they found that she was unconscious. They drove rapidly to the home of the village doctor in Valders who pronounced the woman beyond all earthy help, her death being due to apoplexy. Bertha Malloch (sic) was born in the town of Rhine, Sheboygan County, in 1865 and after her marriage to Henry Baltz resided at Garnet. Her husband died some ten years ago and since that time she has conducted the business with the aid of her children. She is survived by three sons, Sergt. Henry Baltz (107th M.O.R. S. Engineers, Army of Occupation on the Rhine, Germany, Elmer of Hilbert, Martin at Garnet and two daughters, Mrs. John Buchholtz of Valders and Mrs. Elmer Steinmetz of this city. WILLIAM BALTZ Chilton – (Special) – William Baltz, 81, passed away Friday at the home of his son, John Baltz, at Garnet, Wis. Deceased was born May 30, 1861, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Baltz, and was married to Miss Louise Lindner on Feb. 16, 1886, at Steinthal, Manitowoc County. He was a member of St. Pauls Reformed church at Garnet. Survivors are a son, John, of Garnet; two daughters, Mrs. Amanda Doern of Milwaukee, and Mrs. E. H. Braever of Fond du Lac; 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. His wife preceded him in death on Nov. 11, 1918. Funeral services will be held Sunday at the Reformed church at Garnet, the Rev. WILLIE BALTZ Wilhelm Baltz, 27 years old shot himself at the home of his mother, 5 miles northeast of Kiel. The cause of the suicide was a delirius condition after a fall last week. Plymouth Post, June 18, 1913 ******* On Monday morning shortly before 7 o’clock, at the home of Mr. Bernhard Bunge near Steinthal, where he had been staying, Mr. Wm. Baltz, attempted suicide in that he shot a rifle bullet into his head. The reason for this terrible event is unknown but his will to live can be traced to great depression during the last few days. He got up as usual and had breakfast and ordered lunch (he was working as a cabinet maker at the Bethlehem Church and did not return to the house for lunch), and then went to the room of his sick sister. He told her about his sadness and said he was going to shoot himself, and should he also take her life to put an end to her suffering. Thereafter he went to the summer kitchen and took the rifle off the wall. Mr. and Mrs. Bunge who were eating breakfast, and observed this and asked him if he was going hunting instead of going to work and for what was he going hunting. He closed the door to the summer kitchen and shortly thereafter the crack of a gun shot. They sprang to the summer kitchen and found his dead body with a bullet hole in his forehead. Wm. Baltz was born on February 12, 1881 in New Holstein and was 33 years old. In his last years he worked as a cabinet maker. He is survived by his mother, three step-sisters, three sisters and one stepbrother. The burial will take place today at the Rockville cemetery with Pastor Hauser officiating. ELEANOR BALZ WENDLING (#1 Balz/#2 Wendling) Mrs. Eleanor Wendling, 71, of 632 Fremont Street, Kiel, died at Calumet Memorial Hospital, Chilton, where she had been a patient for two weeks. Born on May 22, 1904 in Kiel, she was a daughter of John and Henrietta ?uhr Henschel. She graduated from Kiel High School in 1922. On June 3, 1935, she was married to Milford Balz at Manitowoc. The couple located at Louis Corners where he operated a tavern. He died January 6, 1953. On May 26, 1956 she was married to Oscar Wendling in Kiel. She was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ, Kiel and the Yellow ??rd Council. Survivors include a son, Thomas Balz, Kiel; a granddaughter, and a sister, Mrs. Geraldine Klaeser, Kiel. Funeral services were held Saturday at St. Peter United Church of Christ, the Reverend John F. Baumann, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the Schleswig Cemetery, Rockville. CAROLINA BALZ Kiel—Mrs. Nicholaus Balz, one of the oldest settlers in Town Schleswig, died yesterday of old age weakness. She will be buried Tuesday on the Rockville Cemetery. ELIZABETH (ROTHMANN) BALZ Mrs. Nic. Balz Dies on Monday Suffering from a complication of diseases, Mrs. Nic. Balz, aged 68, died at the Plymouth hospital on Monday morning of this week She had been confined in the hospital for several weeks. Mrs. Balz, nee Elizabeth Rothmann was born July 4, 1861, in Garnet, about ten miles west of here. She was married Nov. 26, 1891, to Nic. Bailz of Calumetville. After living for some time on a farm near Calumetville, the couple moved to Rockville, operating a farm there. Nine years ago they movèd to Kiel, where they have lived since. For a time they owned the saloon now owned by F. A. Steinhardt. Of the eight children born to them, five are living, three having died in their infancy. The sirviving children are: daughters - Mrs. Norman Martin, Memphis, Tenn., and Mrs. Alvin Pagel of near Kiel, sons — Walter of Rockville, and Arno and Milford of KieL Three brothers also survive. They are George Rothmann of Kiel, Edward Rothmann of Garnet, and Philip Rothmann of Exeland. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the home, the Rev. Balz, Kiel Resident, Dies In Plymouth Hospital After being a patient at the Plymouth hospital for six weeks Mrs. Nicholas Balz of Kiel, passed away there on Monday and funeral services will be held from the late home in Kiel Wednesday afternoon. The deceased, whose maiden name was Elizabeth Rothmann, was born at Calumetville, Fond du Lac county July 4, 1861. She was married in 1891 to Nickolas Balz(sic) and the couple settled on a farm at Rockville, this county. They remained on the farm for nine years and then removed to Kiel, where they conducted a hotel for a number of years. Disposing of the hotel they purchased a home in Kiel where they have since lived in retirement. A husband and five children survive. They are Mrs. Alwin Pagel, near Kiel, Mrs. Norman Martin of Memphis, Tenn., Walter of Rockville and Milford and Arno of Kiel, five grandchildren and three brothers, George Rothmann of Kiel, Edward of Milwaukee and Philip of Excellent, Wis. FREDERIC LOUIS BALZ Frederic “Fritz” Balz, 68 of 21812 Main Street (Rockville) died unexpectedly Monday, Sept. 25, 2000 at his home. He was born August 22, 1932 in Manitowoc County, son of the late Arno and Sylvia Rehm Balz. Fritz was a 1950 Kiel High School graduate and a veteran of the US Navy. He married Ramona Schulz in Dubuque, Iowa on November 8, 1957. Fritz operated Brooklyn Bar in Kiel for 15 years. After retiring from the tavern business he worked at the Schnapps Haus in Kiel and retired from H. G. Weber Co., Kiel. He was a member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, Kiel, Kiel VFW Post 6707, a charter member of Kiel Lions Club and served on the state board for the Tavern League of Wisconsin. In his spare time, Fritz enjoyed fishing. Survivors include his wife, Mona, one stepdaughter, Beverly (Ken) Stahl, Ranchester, Wyoming, four step-grandchildren, four step great grandchildren and one brother, Richard Balz. He is preceded in death on one stepdaughter, Barbara Miller and one step granddaughter. Funeral services will be held at St. Peter’s UCC, Kiel with the Rev. Raymond C. Coombs officiating. GERTRUDE BALZ Mrs. Walter Balz, 57, of R. 2, Kiel, died late Tuesday afternoon at University Hospital, Madison, where she had been a patient for five days. She had been in ill health for several years. The former Gertrude Hein, she was born at Kiel, March 7, 1902, a daughter of Elvis and Margaret Klauck Hein. She attended school in Kiel and was married to Walter Balz of Kiel, Sept. 27, 1923. The couple lived in Kiel several years and in 1928 purchased the Rockville Tavern and operated it until 1952. She was a member of the Kasper Beckley Wilkens Post No. 99, American Legion Auxiliary. Survivors include her husband, a son, (private); a daughter, (private); two grandchildren; her mother, Mrs. Margaret Hein of Kiel, and three brothers, Norman, Leo and Robert, all of Kiel. JEROME A. BALZ Jerome A. Balz, age 80, went to his eternal resting place on June 16, 2011 after a battle with leukemia. He was born August 7, 1930 in rural Kiel, on the farm of his parents William & Laura (Dedering) Balz. In his early childhood he attended Hillside Grove School, and attended Kiel High School. Jerome was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem United Church of Christ in the town of Schleswig. It was in this church that he married Carol Schreiber on June 9, 1956. He was a member of Bethlehem for seventy two years until Jerome & Carol joined St. John's United Church of Christ in New Holstein. Jerome was an usher, greeter and read scripture at St. John's. While a member of Bethlehem, Jerome sang in the choir, was a Sunday School teacher, Youth Group leader, Deacon and Elder. Jerome & Carol were custodians at Bethlehem for fourteen years. In his early years he helped out various people in the surrounding area. Various occupations that he held and enjoyed included road work for the town of Schleswig and the town of Eaton, snow plowing for the town of Schleswig, working at the Schleswig Recycle Center, a 4-H leader for cattle, working in the fall at Nesurer Orchards and was a substitute custodian for the Kiel School district. He also was employed for two years at Tecumseh Products, New Holstein before farming became his full-time job. He always said that "I married two homesteads together." When Jerome was farming on the homestead it gave him pleasure to work with his daughter, Lindy Ann & her husband Mark in partnership. Jerome retired from farming on December 28, 1993 and the couple moved to Steinthal where they resided for eighteen years before moving to New Holstein. While they were living in Steinthal Jerome enjoyed gardening, flowers, bird feeding and was a great lover of evergreens. His hobbies also included horses and poultry, dancing, playing cards with various card clubs and taking bus trips. He leaves behind his wife Carol after a joyful 55 years of marriage, three daughters; Rosemarie Egan, Grand Chute, Lindy Ann (Mark) Riesterer, Rockville, Judy Mae (Tim) Mueller, School Hill, one son, John William (LeAnn) Balz, Eau Claire, ten grand- children; Mark & Brenda Riesterer, St. Nazianz, Eric & Jody Riesterer, St. Nazianz, Carla & Dave Burnette, Green Bay, Brandon Riesterer, Kiel, Kevin Voland, Steven Voland, Laura Mueller & Julie Mueller, all of School Hill, Abbie & Bryan Keuther, Kiel and Andi & Rob Fetherson, Milwaukee. LAURA BALZ Laura Balz, 78, 909 Seventh Street, Kiel, was pronounced dead on arrival at Calumet Memorial Hospital, Chilton, Saturday morning after suffering a heart attack at her home. The former Laura Dedering was born June 3, 1905 in the Town of Schleswig, daughter of William and Caroline Radder Dedering. She attended district School. July 7, 1928, she married William Balz at Bethlehem United Church of Christ, town of Schleswig. The couple farmed the Balz homestead farm until retiring in 1972, when they moved to Kiel. He died in 1981. She was a member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, Kiel, its Women’s Guild and the Senior Social. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Adeline) Schmitz, Kiel, Marion Balz and Mrs. Eugene (Rachel) Rabe, both of Sheboygan; a son, Jerome, Town of Schleswig; 11 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; a sister, Miss Adela Dedering, New Holstein; and a brother, Armin Dedering. LOUISE BALZ Mrs. Louisa Balz, widow of the late John Balz, died suddenly Sunday at her home, 718 St. Paul street, Kiel. She would have been 81 years old Monday. She was born in the town of Schleswig Sept. 18, 1869, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Reichert, and was married to Mr. Balz, also of the town of Schleswig, on June 22, 1897. The couple lived on a farm in the town of Schleswig until 20 years ago when they retired and moved to Kiel. Survivors are one son, William, who operates the home farm, three daughters, Mrs. Edgar (Norma) Henning, of the town of Schleswig, Mrs. Otto (Edna) Reichwaldt, of Kiel, and Mrs. Edwin (Amanda) Wagner, of Sheboygan; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and a brother, Jacob Reichwaldt, of Kiel. Four brothers preceded Mrs. Balz in death. Mr. Balz died in December, 1940. Mrs. Balz was a member of the Frauenverein of St. Peter Evangelical and Lutheran church at Kiel. MILFORD BALZ Tavern Operator Commits Suicide With a Shotgun Kiel - Milford Balz, 52, operator of a tavern at Louis Corners, six miles east of Kiel, used a sawed-off shotgun to take his own life at 1 p.m., Tuesday. Dr. T. A. Teitgen, Manitowoc County coroner, said that Balz was alone in the tavern at the time. The man went into a small ante-room, placed the muzzle of the shotgun against his heart and pulled the trigger. The blast was heard by Mrs. Balz who was doing the family wash in another part of the building. Rushing in she found her husband dead on the floor. Dr. Teitgen said the death was recorded as a suicide. No inquest will be held. Balz, Age 68, Dies On Friday Death Occurs At Home of Son in Rockville, Last Rites Monday Nicholas Balz, aged 68, died at two o'clock Friday morning at the home of his son, Walter, at Rockville, after having been ill for the past several weeks. Mr. Balz was born on a farm in the town of Schleswig, October 5, 1864, and was married to Elizabeth Rothmann of Calumetville on November 26, 1891. The couple located on a farm in Rockville, but after several years they sold it and moved to Calumetville and later to Kiel. Since the death of his wife on July 7, 1929, Mr. Balz had been making his home with his son, Walter at Rockville. Survivors are: Two daughters, Mrs. Norman Martin of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Mrs. Alvin Page, who lives near here; three sons, Walter of Rockville, and Milford and Arno of this city; four grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. John Boege and Mrs. Carl Petzoldt and a brother John of this city. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Balz at Rockville, with interment in the Rockville cemetery. The Rev. E. L. NICK BALZ SR. Obituary 1909 Mr. Nic Balz Sr. On Saturday, another pioneer of the Town of Schleswig, went to his eternal rest, namely Mr. Nic Balz Sr. who on the named day, died from stomach cancer at the house of his son John. The deceased saw the light of the world in Framersheim, near Aizie, Grossherzogthum Hessen, Germany on August 18, 1825 and came to America in 1851, initially to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and later married Caroline Nagel in 1854. In 1860, the family came to Town of Schleswig, to purchase a farm, which he worked for 17 years. Since then he lives with his son John who took over the farm. His wife died 10 years ago, and he leaves behind four daughters, Mrs. Fritz Fluhr, Mrs. John Boege, Mrs. Carl Petzold and Mrs. August Schnuelle, and two sons, Nic. and John, also 26 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He reached the age of 83 years, seven months and one day. Mr. Balz lived a healthy life until last fall when he was diagnosed with stomach cancer. RAMONA M. BALZ Romona “Mona” Balz(sic), 82, of Kiel, died Saturday evening, May 10, 2003 at St. Nicholas Hospital, Sheboygan where she was a patient for one day. She had been a resident of Willowpark, New Holstein since August of 2002. The former Romona Schulz, she was born February 11, 1921 in the town of Sherman, daughter of the late Carmon and Lorena Weingartner Schulz. Mona attended LaFollette grade school and was a graduate of Random Lake High School in 1938. In December of 1939 she married Wesley Schulze, and they later divorced. In November of 1957, Mona married Frederic Balz in Dubuque, Iowa. Her husband “Fritz” and herself operated the former Brooklyn Bar in Kiel for 15 years and Mona was later employed at the Kiel Co-Op for a number of years until her retirement. Her husband Fritz preceded her in death on September 25, 2000. Mona was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ, Kiel and the Kiel VFW Auxillary. She did volunteer work at St. Vincent de Paul Store in Kiel and the Kiel Library. She enjoyed playing sheepshead, cribbage, gardening and was an avid reader. Survivors include one daughter, Beverly (Ken) Stahl, Ranchester, Wyo.; one son- in-law, Frederick Miller, Sheboygan, one sister and brother-in-law, Myleen and LeRoy McCue, Cascade; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Richard and Barbara Balz, Rockville; one brother-in-law, Frederick Belger, Boltonville; four grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter and granddaughter, Barbara and Jackie Miller; one brother, Roger Schulz; two sisters, Virginia Schwind and Morla Belger; one brother-in-law, George Schwind and one sister-in-law, Irene Schulz. RICHARD L. BALZ Richard L. Balz, 72, of 14107 Steinthal Road, Kiel, died peacefully Sunday evening, October 15, 2006 at Sheboygan Progressive Care Center after a long battle with Alzheimer's & Pulmonary Hypertension. He was born September 21, 1934, son of the late Arno & Sylvia Rehm Balz. Rich was a 1952 graduate of Kiel High School and a veteran of the US Navy, serving his country from 1952-1955. On April 12, 1958 he married Barbara Mattes at St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Kiel. Rich was very skilled in all trades throughout his life and enjoyed carpentry and woodworking and with his wife's design, ideas, and his skills he built their present home from the ground up with the help of his father-in-law and friends. He previously had done heavy construction, worked for F. Pritchard & Son, Kiel from August thru April each year, helping his close friend, Bob thru the busy heating season. He worked at Kohler Generator as a Lab Technician for over 30 years until his retirement. After retirement he continued to keep himself active by working at Lulloff Hardware, Kiel. Rich was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Kiel, the Kohler Quarter Century Club and an Explorer Scout Leader. He also was a former member of the Kiel City Band and enjoyed playing the coronet in various dance bands in the area. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and was an animal lover who received joy from the variety of family pets the couple had throughout the years. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Barbara of Kiel, two sons: Michael Balz & Janet Roethel, Kiel, Eric (Sarah) Balz & their children, Jarrid & Travis of Stillwater, MN, cousins, Tom & Donna Balz, Kiel, Lavonne & Melvin "Meps" Stecker, Arizona, sister-in-law, Mary & Rev. Marvin Deerhake, Indiana and their three daughters, step brother-in-law, Rev. Robert & Polly Grossmann & their five children of South Dakota, step sister-in-law, Phyllis Grossmann and her two children other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his brother & sister-in-law, Frederic "Fritz" & Mona Balz and step brother-in-law, Peter Grossmann. THOMAS J. BALZ Thomas J. (TJ) Balz, 66, of Kiel, passed away at his home on Saturday, May 26, 2007. He was born on August 14, 1940 in Sheboygan, son of the late Milford & Eleanor Henschel Balz. Tom spent all of his life in the Kiel area, graduating from Kiel High School in 1958. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army proudly serving his country from 1964-1966 in Germany. On September 14, 1966 he married Donna Kolb at St. Peter's UCC, Kiel. He retired from the Kohler Company in 2000 & was a member of the Kohler Quarter Century Club. Tom enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and always had a welcome smile and a "cheery" hello to everyone he met. His favorite pastimes included hunting & fishing with his best friends, time with his pet dogs, cutting wood, playing sheepshead and cribbage and was an avid bowler. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Donna of Kiel, daughter & son-in-law, Sue & Tim Verzal of Oshkosh, one grandson, Jacob Kienbaum, currently serving in the U.S. Navy, one granddaughter, Mariah Verzal of Oshkosh and brother & sister-in-law, Gordon & Gladys Kolb of Burr Ridge, IL. VIOLET BALZ Mrs. Violet A. Balz, 60, of 21933 Main St., Kiel, (Rockville) died Tuesday afternoon at the home of her sister in Sheboygan, following a brief illness. The former Violet Pask was born July 26, 1927 in Amherst, the daughter of the late Frank and Minnie (Miske) Pask. She attended Amherst schools. On Sept. 23, 1950, she married James Balz at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, Kiel. The couple presently owned and operated the Rockville bar in Rockville for the past 37 years. She was a member of the Kiel VFW Auxiliary. WALTER BALZ Walter Balz, 76, of R. 1, Kiel, a retired Rockville tavern keeper, died early today at St. Nicholas hospital, where he had been a patient since Sunday. Born July 27, 1895 at Garnet (Fond du Lac County), he was a son of the late Nicholas and Elizabeth Rothmann Balz. He later moved with his parents to a farm in the Town of Schleswig and then to Kiel where he attended school. On Sept 27, 1924 he married the former Gertrude Hein of Kiel. The couple operated the Rockville tavern for 21 years before retiring and moving to Cedar Lake. Mrs. Balz died March 17, 1959. He was a World War I veteran, a member of the Kiel American Legion Post, a charter member of the Kiel Fish and Game Association, Redmen Lodge of Kiel and St. Peter United Church of Christ, Kiel. Survivors include a daughter, (private) of Kiel; a son, (private) of Rockville, and four grandchildren. A grandchild, two sisters and two brothers preceded him in death. WILLIAM T. BALZ (d. 1981) William T. Balz, 81, of 909 Seventh Street, Kiel, died Saturday at Calumet Memorial Hospital, Chilton, where he had been a patient for the past five days. He was born November 10, 1899, in the Town of Schleswig, a son of John and Louisa Reichert Balz. He attended district school. He married Laura Dedering July 7, 1928, at Bethlehem United Church of Christ, Town of Schleswig. They farmed the Balz Homestead farm in the Town of Schleswig until retirement in 1972, when they moved to Kiel. Mr. Balz was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ, Kiel. Survivors are his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Gordon (Adeline) Schmitz, of Kiel, Marion Balz and Mrs. Eugene (Rachel) Rabe, both of Sheboygan; one son, Jerome of rural Kiel; 11 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Otto Reichwaldt of Kiel. BRUTUS BARTH The body of Brutus Barth, an Indian by birth, was found in a woods in Clark County evidently murdered with a bullet through the heart. The death was verified by a coroner as a murder. He was 50 years old, was born in the village of Kiel, was the chairman of the village council of Kiel and chairman of the Town of Schleswig Town Board for 30 years and also an assessor for the township of Kiel. His wife passed away 12 years ago and is survived by 3 sisters; Dora of Illinois; Caesar of Thorp, Wisconsin and Mrs. Peter Junck on the homestead farm. He had met with Henry Stoll, slipped and fell on the ice outside Stoll’s door, breaking his neck. He died shortly after without gaining consciousness He was 72-yrs. old and for 28 years was chairman of this town and once represented this district in the State Assembly. John Barth’s wife preceded him in death two years ago and he leaves 3 sons and 3 daughters. The eldest son has belonged to the regular army for many years and will make every effort to attend his father’s funeral. That funeral will take place Tues. at 2 p.m. at the Rockville Cemetery. Barth had stopped by Stange a farmer in the neighborhood of Rockville who is Treasurer of Schleswig, and paid his taxes. On his was home he saw Schreiner’s Beer wagon in front of the Store and Saloon and hurried over there in order to ride home with it. Peter Klauck, the beer delivery man was willing to take him along to his farm which lies between Rockville and Kiel, but Barth had a small errand to do by Henry Stoll which is right near the Zillmann place. Barth had hardly gotten on the street when he stumbled and broke his neck. The deceased was Chairman of Town Schleswig for 28 years and represented our District in Legislation once. He reached the age of 72 years and 9 days. He was 72 years old and had served many years on the county board. He also served a couple of terms in the assembly. John Barth was a very superior man. He had but few education advantages when he was young, but he made good the deficiency in later years and became a well informed man. he was deeply interested in educational matters and contributed a great deal to the up building of the Kiel high school. He was a broad, liberal man and took a deep interest in public matters on which he was well informed. He did not know what deception is and valued men solely for their worth. He was not ostentatious in his friendships, but unswerving and devoted. The county had no better citizen than John Barth and his death is a loss to the community of which he was a part. The deceased was ill with Colera Morbus. In the month of May 1853, she married John Barth in Rottenacker, Wuttemburg, where she had been born and raised. The next day the newlyweds left for America. AMELIA BECKER Mrs. Arthur Becker Dies After Long Illness Mrs. Arthur Becker, aged 46, passed away some time Thursday night at her home on Milwaukee street, following a lingering illness. Funeral services were conducted on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home, with the Rev. R. E. Dreger of the Presbyterian church officiating. Burial was made in the Rockville cemetery. The deceased, nee Omelie(sic) Lettler, was born at Sherwood April 27, 1900, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Hess-Lettler. She was married to Arthur Becker on Feb. 24, 1925, and the couple have since resided in this city. CAROL ANN BECKER Miss Carol Ann Becker, 16, junior student at Kiel High School, died early Monday night at St. Nicholas Hospital, Sheboygan. She had been seriously ill the past three weeks. Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Kiel, the Rev. Ernest J. Nelson officiating, with burial in the Rockville Cemetery. Miss Becker, daughter of Arthur and the late Mrs. Becker, was born in Kiel July 31, 1936. She resided with her father, two sisters and three brothers at the family home, 721 North St., Kiel. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and was affiliated with the Youth Fellowship organization and sang in the church choir and also taught a Sunday school class. Miss Becker was a member of the High School chorus. Surviving are her father, four sisters, Mrs. Melvin Kleppen of Brillion, Mrs. Melvin Reseburg of Kiel, Miss Bernette at home and Miss Merla of Fond du Lac; an three brothers, Arthur, Paul and David at home. EMMA BECKER Mrs. Henry Becker, 73, of 426 Chicago street, Kiel, died Saturday afternoon, following a lingering illness. Born Emma Pingel in Schleswig in 1873, she resided at Rockville for some time and moved to Kiel where she was married to Mr. Pingel in 1896. He died in 1933. HENRY BECKER Kiel—Henry Becker, 69, well-known resident of this city, passed away today at his home at 426 Chicago avenue after an illness of about one year. He was born Oct. 6, 1869, in Germany and came to the United States in 1893, settling in the town of Rhine with his uncle, Henry Becker, from whom he learned his trade as a mason. On April 4, 1896, he married Emma Pingel of Rockville, two miles east of Kiel, and the couple resided on the Pingel homestead there for three and one-half years. In 1899 they moved to Kiel where they made their home since that time. He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Arthur Kissinger, Mrs. Albert Brickheimer, both of Elkhart Lake, and Mrs. Winford H. Johnson of Kiel; one son, Arthur of Kiel; 14 grandchildren; one sister in Germany and a sister in Chicago. Funeral services will be conducted at the C.J. Meiselwitz funeral home here by Rev. CAROLINE BERG Kiel--Mrs. Caroline Berg (nee Reseburg) passed away on Thursday afternoon at the home of her son August in Kiel at the age of 83 years, 3 months and 9 days. The deceased was born September 9th, 1830 in Rothwuehle, Pommern, Germany and was married there in 1849 to Ernest Berg and came to America with her husband and two children. The family settled in Town Schleswig on a farm where her husband passed away on Apreil of 1898. For 7 years she lived in Kiel with her sons Franz and August. They had 9 children, 6 sons and 3 daughters, who are survivors namely; August, Ernst, Mrs. Pauline Reseburg, Mrs. Minnie Lachemeier, Emil and Mrs. Louise Meiselwitz, also 21 grandchildren and 10 great grand- children; also one sister, Mrs. Griebenow of Kiel. JOSEPHINE BERG Last week Wednesday at the home of her brother Mr. August Berg who lives a mile north of Kiel, Miss Josephine Berg died at the age of 38 years and 9 months following a chronic illness due to inflammation of the lungs and articular rheumatism. ANNA M. BEST Plymouth—Mrs. Mary Best, the widow of Peter Best for 28 years died in Neillsville by her granddaughter, Mrs. Herman Eberhardt where she was visiting. She was born In Hessen, Darmstadt on October 8th, 1821 and she reached the age of 81 years, 10 months and 14 days. She was married in Germany with Peter Best and they came to America where they operated a farm in Town Schleswig for many years. She leaves the following children; Mrs. John Frick of Plymouth; Mrs. August Luellof of Hilbert; Mrs. William Hartmann of Thea, South Dakota; Louis Best of Souix Falls, South Dakota and Carl Best on the home farm in Town Schleswig; also 20 grandchildren and 5 great grand- children. Two years later his father, Peter Best, purchased 120 acres of fine farming land in the town of Schleswig, two miles south-east of Kiel, which later became the property of the son Carl, who resided on the place until his death. He was married in 1876 to Louise Meyer, who survives him, with two sons and two daughters, namely, Louis of Kiel and Carl on the old homestead, Mrs. Ph. Mattes of Thorp and Mrs. Wm. Voss of Kiel. He also leaves nine grandchildren, one brother, Louis, of Sioux Falls, Dak., and two sisters, Mrs. Kate Hartmann of Sioux Falls, S. D. and Mrs. Susanna Frick, of Milwaukee. CARL BEST (d. 1961) Road Crash Injury Fatal To Kiel Man Kiel—Carl C. Best, 71, of 618 Seventh St., Kiel, died early this morning at St. Nicholas Hospital from injuries received in a accident last week involving a farm tractor and wagon and an automobile. According to Manitowoc County traffic officers, the accident occurred Nov. 14 late in the afternoon on County Trunk AAA, less than a mile west of Highway 32 in the Town of Schleswig. A car driven by Irwin J. Boll, R. 4 Chilton collided with the tractor and wagon being driven by Philip Pagel, R. 2, Kiel. Best was apparently thrown from the wagon and was taken to the hospital with a cerebral concussion. He had been hospitalized since the accident. Mr. Best was born Dec. 3, 1889, in the Town of Schleswig, a son of the late Charles and Louisa Meyer Best. He married the former Renata Neumann of the Town of Herman there on Nov. 27, 1915. The couple operated the Best homestead farm in the Town of Schleswig until 1932 when they moved to Elkhart Lake where he worked for the Milwaukee Railroad until his retirement in 1956. His wife preceded him in death in April 1955. For the past seven months he had lived in Kiel. He was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ in Kiel and of the church brother- hood. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Donald (Lilly) Bell, Sheboygan Falls, Mrs. Wesley (Martha) Caan, Milwaukee, Mrs. Carl (Emma) Ray, West Allis, and Mrs. Donald (Madeline) Spletter, New Holstein; 12 grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Louise Voss, and a brother, Louie A Best, both of Kiel. JOAN BEST Mrs. Blanche Joan Best(sic), 81, a former Kiel resident, died Thursday, October 9, at Willowdale Nursing Home, New Holstein, where she had resided the past two months. The former Blanche Joan William, she was born August 18, 1899 in Chicago, a daughter of the late Bert and Catherine Williams. As a young girl she moved to Milwaukee. On May 16, 1944, she and Louie Best were married in Waukegan, Ill. They resided in Kimberly and Sherwood before moving to Kiel. Mr. Best died in August 1977. Surviving are nieces and nephews. Funeral services were at 1:30 Sat., Oct. 11 at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home, Kiel with the Rev. John Baumann, pastor of St. Peter United Church of Christ, Kiel, officiating. LEONA ELLA BEST Suffering from inflammatory rheumatism, followed by a heart attack, Miss Leona Ella Best, ten—year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Best, who reside on a farm about two miles southeast of Kiel, passed away at 7:30 Sunday morning at her home. She attended the Kiel public school, and was a member of the fourth grade class. She also attended the St. Peter Reformed church Sunday school. She is survived by her parents and four sisters, Lillian, Martha, Emma and Madeline, all at home. She was born October 12, 1921. Funeral services were held at 1:30 from the home, and at 2 o’clock at the St. Peter Reformed church. The Mendelssohn Choir sang “Jesus Lover of My Soul,” and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus," and the Sunday school class sang "Jesus Loves Me." Her fourth grade classmates attended the services in a body. Pallbearers were: Elmer Stecker, Manfred Moritz, Ralph Eickert and Lester Vogel. Interment was in the Rockville cemetery, with the Rev. E. L. Worthman conducting the last rites. The child had been ill for only a week. She was born in the city of Kiel on October 12, 1921 and was a student in the public schools of that city until illness forced her to give up her studies. Besides her parents she is survived by four sisters, Lillian, Martha, Emma and Adeline. LOUIE BEST Louie A. Best, 84, of Park Avenue, Kiel, died August 23, at Calumet Memorial Hospital, Chilton, where he had been a patient for two days. He was born March 14, 1893, in the Town of Schleswig, a son of Carl and Louise Meyer Best. He attended Kiel schools and was a veteran of World War I, serving with Battery E, 327th Field Artillery, from July, 1918, to February, 1919. In 1923, he moved to Thorp where he purchased a farm which he operated until 1942, when he moved to Appleton where he was employed at a paper mill. He retired in 1958 and moved to Kiel. On May 16, 1944, he married the former Blanche Joan Williams at Waukegan, Illinois. Survivors include his widow. (rest missing)


RENATA BEST Mrs. Carl Best, 61, Elkhart Lake, died early this morning at Plymouth Hospital where she had been a patient for the last month. Born Renata Neumann on Sept. 10, 1893, in the town of Herman, she was the daughter of the late Christ and Bertha Neumann. She was married to Carl Best on Nov. 27, 1915, in the town of Herman Lutheran Church. The couple lived on the Best homestead in the town of Schleswig until 1932, at which time they moved to Elkhart Lake. She was a member of Senior Guild of Community Evangelical and Reformed Church. Services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at Community Evangelical and Reformed Church. The Rev. Paul Olm will offiicate and burial will be in Rockville cemetery. ELVA BIECK Elva Bieck, 84, of 732 Milwaukee St., Kiel, died at her home Monday. The former Alva Glock (sic) was born July 4, 1897, in Kiel, a daughter of the late Henry and Bertha Schmidt Glock. She attended Kiel High School. On Dec. 31, 1920 she married Hubert Bieck in Milan. Mr. Bieck died in 1949. Mrs. Bieck was employed at Hansen Glove Co., Kiel. She was a member of St. Peter United church of Christ, Kiel, a charter member of the G.U.G. Germania Society, and was a member of the Kiel Senior Citizens. HENRY BIECK Henry Bieck, 65, a former Kiel resident, died Friday morning at Cedar lake Home for the Aged, West Bend, where he had lived for the past 10 years. He was born July 18, 1918, in Kiel, a son of the late Hubert and Elva Glock Bieck. He graduated from Kiel High School in 1937. Mr. Bieck was employed at Manitowoc Shipyard, then moved to Chicago. HUBERT ARTHUR BIECK Hubert Arthur Bieck, 57, of 732 Milwaukee street, Kiel, passed away Tuesday evening at the St. Nicholas hospital following a lingering illness. Born Sept. 29, 1892, at Plymouth, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Bieck, he attended school there and on Jan. 1, 1918, was married to Elva Glock of Kiel and they made their home in Kiel since. He was employed as a plumber by the Rudolph Greve Hardware Co. for 30 years. A member of the Evangelical and Reformed church of Kiel he also served as a member of the city council for a time. Survivors are his wife; three sons, Henry and Donald at home and Oscar of Milwaukee; one grandchild; a brother William of Sheboygan Falls. His parents, three brothers and a sister preceded him in death. VICTOR A. BINDER Victor Binder, 63, of 13635 Cedar Lake Road, Kiel, died Tuesday morning at Calumet Memorial Hospital in Chilton, following a short illness. Born Aug. 30, 1922, in the town of Rhine, he was a son of the late William and Elizabeth Wehmeyer Binder. He attended township schools. His marriage to the former Elaine Pagel took place June 28, 1958, at Community United church of Christ in Elkhart Lake. Mrs. Binder died Dec. 11, 1979. He was employed at Kiel Woodenware. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Viola Klein of Sheboygan and a stepbrother, Alvin Binder, living in Arkansas. A sister and five brothers preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, 2 sons, 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He was born May 16th, 1827 in Beinflet near Itzchae, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and came to America in 1845 and settled in New Holstein. He was married to Christine Reimers and moved to a farm in Town Schleswig. She passed away after 10 years of marriage. The marriage also produced 2 sons, John and Jacob. He later married Charlotte Krause who passed away 18 years later. He was married the third time to Sophie Stecker by whom he is survived. DIEDERICH BOESELAGER (d. 1915) On Saturday morning at the home of his son Friedrich in Hilbert, Mr. Diedrich Boselager, one of the pioneers of Town Schleswig died at the age of 89 years, a day before his birthday, due to old age. The deceased was born on October 17, 1826 in Oldenburg, Germany and grew to manhood there. At the age of 21 years he enlisted as a soldier and took part in the war against Denmark, serving until the end in 1850. In 1852 he immigrated to America and acquired his homestead near Rockville. A while later he married Catharine Suhr, and they both were willing to take on the pioneer life and its costs and benefits. In 1863 his wife died, leaving him with two sons. Later he married Wible Asmus and this marriage was blessed with seven sons and two daughters. In 1892 his second wife died. Four sons from the second marriage, Eduard, Friedrich, August and Louis survive him. The body was brought to Kiel and on Tuesday from his son Eduard’s home to the Rockville Cemetery for his final rest. Mr. Wm. Broeckert gave the funeral oration. The Arion Band and the German War Veterans Association, of which he was a member, gave their comrade an honor escort to the grave. Kiel Record - 1915

ESTHER BOJE Esther H. Boje, age 96, died Monday evening, January 7, 2013 at Homestead Care Center, New Holstein where she was a resident the past 21/2 years. She was the former Esther Vogel, born April 7, 1916 in the Town of Schleswig, daughter of the late Herman & Ella (Wagner) Vogel. Esther attended school in Rockville. On June 8, 1935 she married Herman Boje of Howards Grove at Zion Lutheran Church, Louis Corners. The couple celebrated their 50th anniversary in June 1985. Herman preceded her in death on September 12, 1988. The couple farmed in the Town of Herman, (near Ada) for 47 years prior to moving to Kiel in June 1982. Esther was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Howards Grove and the Ladies Aid. She enjoyed dancing, taking pictures and sharing a story with each of them. Her favorite pastime was tending to her flower gardens, nourishing and growing her many gladiolas, roses, daisies and lilies among her many other flowers. Survivors include her son, Richard (Marlene) Boje, Kiel, brother-in-law, William (Colleen) Boje, Milwaukee, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman, an infant brother and one brother, Herbert (Stella) Vogel. Funeral services for Esther will be held at 6:00 pm Friday, January 11, 2013 at Meiselwitz-Vollstedt Funeral Home, 815 6th St. Kiel with Rev. Darrel L. Bergelin, Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Howards Grove officiating. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4:00 pm until the time of service. Cremation will take place following the services with burial at Schleswig Cemetery, Rockville. A memorial has been established for Trinity Lutheran Church, Howards Grove. HERMAN W. BOJE Herman W. Boje, 77, 724 Center Street, Kiel died Monday morning, September 12, at Calumet Medical Center, Chilton, where he was a patient for four weeks. He was born May 9, 1911, in the town of Herman; the son of the late Louie and Lena Lange Boje. He attended Trinity Lutheran School of Howards Grove, and Howards Grove Schools. He married Esther Vogel on June 8, 1935, in rural Kiel. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1985. He farmed in the town of Herman for 47 years, retiring in 1982, when they moved to Kiel. He was a life- long member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Howards Grove. Survivors include this wife, Esther; one son, Richard, Kiel; two brothers, Raymond of Sheboygan; William of Milwaukee; two sisters, Mrs. Lester Tetzlaff, Mishicot and Mrs. Charles Tetzlaff, Marinette. ISABELL BOLGERT Isabell Bolgert, 78, passed away Wednesday morning, Feb. 16, 2005, at Sunny Ridge Nursing Home, where she had resided the past four months. Born March 14, 1926, in Kiel, WI, Isabell was a daughter of the late Edwin and Laura Voss Dickmann. Isabell graduated from Kiel High School in 1944. On Sept. 24, 1949, she was united in marriage to Walter Bolgert. The couple was married for 41 years before Walter preceded her in death on July 9, 1991. Isabell was most recently employed by the Budgetel and her previous employment included Murphy's Department Store, Sheboygan Recreational Department and the Sheboygan Public School System. Mrs. Bolgert was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She was a member of the Windows Brunch, a former president and pianist for the local AARP Chapter where she also presided on the Executive Board, a member of the Stroke Support Group of St. Nicholas Hospital and was a volunteer at Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center. Isabell enjoyed decorative painting, playing cards, bingo, reading, lunching with friends and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by three children, Sandra Kay Serge, Ackworth, GA, Karen Bolgert, Sheboygan, Paul (Barbara) Bolgert, Sheboygan; four grandchildren, Amy, Tim, Emily and Lindsay Bolgert, other relatives and many friends.


WALTER P. BOLGERT Walter Paul Bolgert was born June 5, 1923 to Amalia (Engel) and Sam Bolgert in Sheboygan, WI. He had one older brother: Edwin Fred Bolgert. He is a WWII Veteran and was a private in the Army. He married Isabell (Dickmann) Bolgert, and had three children: Sandra, Karen, and Paul. He worked at Kohler Company for most of his life until he suffered a heart attack at which time he retired. He remained active during the remainder of his life and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.


FREDRICH BOOS Friedrich Boos passed away at the home of his brother-in-law, Chr. Bunge, in the town of Schleswig, where he had been living since 1884. Death came after an illness of about two months, due to the infirmities of old age. Decedent was born November 26, 1842 in Uhler, Prussia, Germany, and came to America with his parents, sisters and brothers in 1856, the family settling in the town of Herman, Sheboygan County. In 1886 he lost his sight while splitting wood, one of the splinters striking him in the eye, rendering him blind ever since. He leaves one sister. HENRY BRUSS Henry Bruss of Reedsville Dies at Home Sunday Brillion - Henry Bruss, aged 79, of Reedsville, formerly a resident of Brillion, where he conducted a livery stable, died at his home at Reedsville at 10 o'clock Sunday morning. Mr. Bruss was born in the town of Rhine in Sheboygan county on April 14, 1864. He made his home at Brillion and later conducted a livery stable in this city. Still later in his life he engaged in farming. Seven years ago he moved to Reedsville to make his home. Survivors are three brothers, August of Unity, Wis.; Phillip of Kenosha and John of Manitowoc and three sisters, Mrs. Ernestina Beyer of Calumet Harbor, Mrs. August Parman of Racine and Mrs. Godfrey Struck of Lamartine. JOHANNETTE "NETTIE" BUB Mrs. Walter Bub of here passed away suddenly at her home last Wednesday night at 7:45 o'clock, after suffering a stroke shortly before that time. The deceased, nee Johannette Leonard, was born in the town of Rhine in July, 1892, the daughter of John and Katherine Leonard. On December 27, 1913 she was married to Mr. Bub and the couple located on the present farm home, where they have lived since. Survivors are the husband; one son Clarence; a daughter, Helen, at home, and a brother, John Leonard of the town of Rhine. WALTER BUB Walter H. Bub, 83, of 310 Elizabeth St., Plymouth died Saturday at Rocky Knoll following a lingering illness. He was born May 25, 1888 in the Town of Rhine, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Bub. On Dec. 27, 1913 he married Nettie Leonard in Rhine. The couple lived and farmed in Rhine after marriage. Mrs. Bub died Jan, 21, 1942. Mr. Bub lived in the Town of Plymouth a short time before moving to Plymouth in 1952. He directed the Walter Bub Orchestra for 12 years, was a member of Musicians Local 95, new Sheboygan Aerie 0277, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Jolly Time Club of Sheboygan and the Senior Citizens of Plymouth. Survivors are a son, Clarence, Town of Greenbush; a daughter, Mr. Carl (Helen) Helmer, Plymouth; nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Bub, Plymouth and Mrs. Lydia Strosta, Milwaukee. Two sisters preceded him in death. Funeral services will be Wednesday at Wittkopp Funeral Home, Plymouth. The Rev. Lowell Ferguson, pastor of Salem United Church of Christ, will officiate. ALBERTINE BUCHHOLZ CALLED BY DEATH Mrs. Joseph Buchholz Death claimed Mrs. Jos. Buchholz on Monday evening, at Milwaukee, where she was visiting her daughters. Albertina Rades was born March 14, 1862 in Germany, and came to America with her parents in 1867, who settled on a farm in the town of Schleswig. She was united in marriage to Joseph Buchholz on March 16, 1880, and during the same year they bought 40 acres of land from his father-in-law in the town of Schleswig, one mile north of Kiel. A few years later they purchased 40 acres of land from their brother-in-law adjoining Mr. Buchholz’ farm, making 80 acres in all, which they both worked faithfully for 37 years. The homestead was then sold to their son William, who still resides on the farm. They then lived one half mile from Kiel up to the time of the death of Mr. Buchholz several months ago. Since then she has been visiting her children. Last week she left for Milwaukee to visit her daughters, where she became ill with dropsy and heart failure, in which death claimed her Monday. She reached the age of 65 years, and leaves to mourn 8 children, and 19 grandchildren. The children are as follows: Mrs. Herman Gast and Mrs. Hy. Kattreh of Milwaukee, Mrs. Wm. Petzold and Mrs. Norb. Reichardt of Schleswig, Mrs. John Kuhn of Ada, Carl Buchholz of New Holstein, William on the homestead and Herman of Schleswig; one brother, Frank Rades of Meeme; and one sister, Mrs. Hy. Peters of Black Creek. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at one o’clock from the old homestead to the church. Burial will be made in the Rockville cemetery, the Rev. ALMA BUCHHOLZ DIES FRIDAY AT PLYMOUTH Mrs. William Buchholz To Be Buried At Rockville Mrs. William Buchholz, 40, of Schleswig, died Friday at Plymouth. She was removed to a hospital in that city from her home a week ago. Funeral services will be held from the home Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. and at 2 p.m. from the St. Peter Reformed church with interment in the Rockville cemetery. The deceased, whose maiden name was Alma Perronne, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Perronne of Howard’s Grove, was born in the town of Herman, Sheboygan county, in 1895. She was married in 1917 and the couple located on the present homestead farm, a short distance northeast of Kiel. Survivors are the widower; two sons, Elmer and William Jr., and two daughters, Hildegarde and Anita, all at home; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Perronne, Howard’s Grove; six brothers, William, Marshall, Wis.; Fred, Herman; Louis, Franklin; Martin, Howard’s Grove; Herman, Sheboygan; Paul, Mosel. ELMER N. BUCHHOLZ Elmer Norbert Buchholz, longtime resident of Kiel, passed away from natural causes in Richardson, TX on June 25, 2010. Elmer was born March 25, 1923 on the family farm in the Town of Schleswig to the late William Sr. and Alma Buchholz. Elmer proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII, seeing action mostly in the Atlantic and participating in D-Day. After the War he returned to Kiel and started working for MB Company of New Holstein, where he worked until his retirement in 1988. On June 6, 1958 he was united in marriage with Ruth Hein in Plymouth. Elmer and Ruth were active for decades in VFW Post 6707 of Kiel. He also served in the VFW color guard and marched with the Kiel Municipal Band in parades for 30 years. Elmer was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ in Kiel. He loved trout fishing in the streams of Sheboygan County. Elmer is survived by his children, Barbara (Ron) Read of Richardson, TX and Bruce (Doreen) Buchholz of Orinda, CA; grandchildren Russell Read, Robert Read, Maxwell Buchholz, Wolfgang Buchholz and Linus Buchholz; and sister Hildegard Wieting of Kiel. In addition, nieces, nephews, and their children survive him. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ruth, brother William Jr., and sister Anita Schnell. JOSEPH BUCHHOLZ Town Schleswig Resident Passes Away on Sunday Jos. Buchholz, a well-known resident of the town of Schleswig, passed away at 4:30 a.m. Sunday at his home, following an illness of dropsy from which he had suffered a year. Mr. Buchholz was born in the town of Rhine, April 22, 1857, and was married to Albertine Rades of the town of Schleswig in 1880. After his marriage Mr. Buchholz purchased a forty-acre farm from his father-in-law a mile north of Kiel and a few years later bought an additional forty-acres from his mother- in-law, adjoining the first forty acres. He cleared the land of stones and tree stumps and lived on the same farm for thirty-seven years. Later Mr. Buchholz sold his farm to his son William Buchholz, who lives on the old homestead. In 1917 the deceased purchased ten acres of land, one-half mile from Kiel in the town of Schleswig, and he lived there until his death. The survivors are five daughters, Mrs. Herman Gast, of Milwaukee; Mrs. William Petzoldt, who resides near Millhome; Mrs. H. Kattre, Milwaukee; Mrs. John J. Kuhn of Ada, and Mrs. Norbert Reichert, of Schleswig, and three sons, Carl, of New Holstein; Herman, near Kiel, and William on the old homestead. One sister, Herman Ruge, of Medford and a brother, Adam Buchholz, of Spokane, Washington, and nineteen grandchildren, also survive. LEN DORIS L. BUCHHOLZ LenDoris L. Buchholz(sic), 88, a resident of Willowpark Residence, formerly of E. Chicago Street, Kiel, died Monday, April 23, 2012. LenDoris Spettel was born August 21, 1923, daughter of the late Jacob and Clara (Strassman) Spettel. She attended school in the town of Russell and graduated from 8th grade at Elder Grove School in the town of Eaton. On December 28, 1980, she was married to William Buchholz Jr. by Rev. E.L. Worthman at St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Kiel. William preceded her in death on June 1, 2008. LenDoris was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ for 72 years. LenDoris was a housewife, she raised five boys and helped farm at the Buchholz family farm for 53 years. She enjoyed word search, rummy, rides between the lakes, embroidery, a trip to Europe and baking thousands of cookies for her bottomless cookie jar. You could always find a Packer party at their house during football season. Len and Bill retired and moved to Kiel in 1993. Survivors include, daughter-in-law; sons (private); 19 grandchildren; 26 great- grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and one sister-in-law (private). She is further survived by other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Richard Buchholz; one great- grandson, Dereck McMunn; and seven sisters, Stella (John) Ibe, Elsie (Watler) Voight, Cecelia (Ferdinand) Schneider, Lulu (Hilbert) Mueller, Verna (Roland) Beckman, Clara Spettel and Viola (George) Vogel. RICHARD H. BUCHHOLZ Richard H Buchholz, 63, of Kiel, went to the Lord on Mr Kilimanjaro in Arusha, the United Republic of Tanzania, Africa following his dreams. He was born November 6, 1942 in Sheboygan, son of William and LenDoris Spettel Buchholz. Richard was a graduate of Kiel High School. He was a veteran of the US Army 82nd Airborne serving his country from 1963-1965. On August 29, 1964 he married Peggy Wester in Angier, North Carolina. Richard & Peggy farmed the family homestead in the town of Schleswig from 1971 until retiring in 2002. He was a lifelong member of St Peter's United Church of Christ, Kiel serving on the church consistory as a deacon and elder. Richard was excellent wine maker, photographer and avid world traveler, having walked the Appalachian Trail, a total of 2,178 miles in 2005. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending tile with wife , children and grandchildren. RUTH H. BUCHHOLZ Ruth H. Buchholz, age 82 of Kiel died Thursday afternoon, March 23, 2006 at her home of pancreatic cancer. Ruth was born January 21, 1924 in Plymouth, daughter of the late Frederick & Margaret Rothman Hein. She attended St. John Lutheran Grade School and was a 1941 graduate of Plymouth High School. In 1958, Ruth married Elmer Buchholz at St. John Lutheran Church in Plymouth. In 1961 they moved to their present home in Kiel. Ruth previously worked at Cleveland Container for 17 years. She worked as a cook and later as the head cook at Zielanis Elementary School, Kiel until her retirement. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Kiel and the Ladies Aid. She also served as a former President of the Kiel V.F.W. Auxiliary and as chairman & later co-chairman with her husband Elmer of hospital equipment for the V.F. W. for many years. In addition Ruth was a member of her local A.A.R.P chapter. Ruth is survived by her husband of 47 years, Elmer of Kiel, one daughter, Barbara (Ronald) Read of Texas, one son, Bruce (Doreen) Buchholz of California, five grandchildren: Russell & Robert Read of Texas, Maxwell, Wolfgang & Linus Buchholz of California and one sister, Marie Van Alstine of Milwaukee. Mr. Buchholz married Hilda Nadler Rach of the Town of New Holstein on Feb. 8, 1941 at St. Anna. The couple operated a farm in the Town of New Holstein, retiring in 1943 and moving to Kiel. He also was employed by Wisconsin Public Service Corp., until retiring in 1958. He was a member of St. Peter UCC, the Senior Citizens Club of Kiel, a former Town of Schleswig supervisor and a district school board member. OLIVIA BUCHOLTZ Universal sorrow was felt in this community when news reached here of the death of Mrs. John Bucholtz who died Monday morning at her home in Kiel at the age of 38 years. Mrs. Bucholtz was formerly Miss Olivia Baltz of Garnet and is well and favorably known in this vicinity. She had been in poor health for several years, but failed rapidly the past few months until death came. Mrs. Bucholtz was a member of the Ladies Aid of St. Paul’s Evang. Church and always worked diligently in support of her church. She is survived by her husband, one son, Jerome, age 7, an adopted son, Martin, age 10, three brothers, Martin Baltz of Calumetville, Elmer B., of Garnet and Henry B. of Chilton and one sister, Mrs. Elmer Steinmetz of Chilton, and many other relatives. ANNA BUNGE Notes from Schleswig: Died on Sunday morning, February 17 1918 at her home, Mrs. Anna Johanna Bunge, wife of Mr. Christian Bunge after a long sickness from old age and lung trouble. Deceased was one of the prominent German pioneer women of this town. She was born March 16, 1838 in Uker in der Rhein Province, Preisen, Germany. In the year 1857 she came to America with her parents coming to this vicinity. In 1858 she was united in marriage to Gotfriedt Mueller of Schleswig and settled on a farm in our town. In 1868 Mr. Mueller died. One year later she was united in marriage to Christian Bunge, with whom she lived 48 years. Deceased was a good neighbor and mother and beloved by all who knew her. She lived on the farm where she died for 60 years continuously. In her pioneer days she went through many hardships and stood it well. She reached the age of 82 years less one month. She leaves to mourn her death her husband, 9 children, 6 from her first marriage and 3 from the second; 20 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 2 sisters and 1 brother. CHRISTIAN F. BUNGE C. F. Bunge, 89 Dies Sunday Funeral Services Held Wednesday; Burial In Rockville Cemetery Christian F. Bunge aged 89, well-known and highly respected resident of Manitowoc county, passed away at his farm home in the town of Schleswig, three miles east of Kiel at 9:30 o’clock a.m., Sunday, after an illness of two weeks’ duration. Mr. Bunge was born in Melzow Province, Brandbenburg, Uckermark, Germany on September 5, 1843. In the year 1868 he migrated to America and located directly in the town of Schleswig. He was married to Mrs. Annie Mueller, also of that township in September 1869 and the couple located on their present homestead where they have resided ever since. His wife passed away February 17, 1918. Mr. Bunge was a war veteran and served in the third Posisches infantry, Regiment 58, from 1864 to 186? and fought in the war of 1866 against Austria. He also served as captain of the Kiel German Krieger Verein for many years, but which disbanded two years ago. He was still a member of the German Krieger Bund of Wisconsin up to the time of his death. - 1933 ******** Christian F. Bunge, Aged 89, a resident of Schleswig since 1868, died Sunday at the farm home. Born in Germany, he served in the German armies for three years before coming to America. Married here in 1869 to Mrs. Annie Mueller who died in 1918. Two sons, daughter, two stepdaughters and three stepsons survive. ELISABETH BUNGE Mrs. Bernhard Bunge, nee Elizabeth Mantz(sic), passed away on Wednesday, at 2 a.m., at her home near Steinthal. She had been ill since last February with dropsy. Deceased was born on August 29, 1855 (sic), in the town of Rhine, where she grew to womanhood. On October 3, 1876, she was married to Nic. Balz, the union being blessed with the following children; Mrs. Arthur Graf and Mrs. Herman Grabs of Kiel, and Mrs. Franz Winkel of Schleswig. Her husband died on Sept. 22, 1886, and on July 3, 1888 she was married to Bernhard Bunge. The couple have lived on the farm near Steinthal since their marriage. Besides her husband she is survived by four children of her second marriage as follows; Mrs. Math. Dedering of Schleswig, Mrs. Henry Milz of Howards Grove, Mrs. Ernst Damrow of Kiel and Louis Bunge at home; also two brothers, Fred and Philip Mantz. The obsequies will be held at 1:30 Saturday afternoon from the home. Interment will be made in the Rockville Cemetery. No newspaper cited, 1926


EMMA BUNGE Kiel Woman, 73, Killed In Fall At Home Kiel – (Special) – Miss Emma Bunge, 73, was killed early this morning when she tripped and fell down a flight of stairs at her home, 813 Third street. The body was found lying at the bottom of the stairs shortly after 9 a.m. by a neighbor, Mrs. William H. Mattes. Death was believed to have been instantaneous. Dr. Arthur Teitgen, Manitowoc county coroner, attributed death to a skull fracture. He said Miss Bunge apparently stumbled on a top step and fell down the 14-step stairway to the first floor. Born January 11, 1877, in the town of Schleswig, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Christian Bunge, Miss Bunge resided on the homestead farm until seven years ago when she and her brother, Hubert, moved to Kiel. Survivors are two brothers, Hubert and Adolph, Kiel; a step-brother, Frank Mueller, New Holstein, and a step-sister, Mrs. Annie Fischer, Sheboygan. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Meiselwitz Funeral home with the Rev. E. L. Worthman, pastor of Ss. Peter and Paul Evangelical and Reformed church, officiating. HUBERT BUNGE Hubert Bunge, 87, of 813 3rd St., Kiel a retired Town of Schleswig farmer, died Saturday afternoon at the Morningside Nursing Home in Sheboygan. He had resided there for the past month. He was born in the Town of Schleswig on Dec, 16, 1872, the son of the late Christian and Anna Boos Bunge. He received his education in district schools in that township, then he and his sister, operated the homestead farm until 1943, when they moved to Kiel. He never married. He is survived by nieces and nephews. Preceding his in death were one brother, one sister, five step-brothers and two step- sisters. Funeral services will be held at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home, with the Rev. Vernon E. Jaberg, pastor of St. Peter Evangelical and Reformed Church in Kiel, officiating. ERNA BURGDORF Erna A. Burgdorf, 92, of Park Avenue, Kiel, died Sunday morning at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital, where she had been a patient for five weeks. The former Erna Staeffler was born June 22, 1889, in the town of Meeme, a daughter of Fred and Louisa Prueter Staeffler. She attended Kiel public schools. Her marriage to William Charles Burgdorf took place April 2, 1910, in Kiel. The couple established a green house in Kiel, now operated by their son, Ronald. William Burgdorf died Nov. 13, 1964. Mrs. Burgdorf was a member of the First Presbyterian church of Kiel and its women's organization. She was a 50-year member of Kiel Camp 2502 Royal Neighbors of American, Rebekah Lodge of Sheboygan, Eastern Star Kiel Order 281, Kiel Frauen Verein, Schleswig Cemetery Association and the Kiel Historical Society. Survivors include her son, Ronald, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were 11 brothers and sisters. The funeral service will be Wednesday at Meiselwitz funeral Home. The Rev. Joe V. Anderson, pastor of First Presbyterian church, will officiate. Burial will be in Schleswig Cemetery. ESTHER BURGDORF Esther B. Burgdorf, 95, of Kiel, died Monday morning, September 9, 2013 at Oak Creek Assisted Living where she resided the past year. She was the former Esther Wieting, born, September 22, 1917 in the Town of Schleswig, daughter of the late Irvin & Lydia Wieting. Esther was a graduate of Kiel High School. On March 22, 1941 she married Ronald F. Burgdorf at First Presbyterian Church, Kiel. The couple celebrated their 50th & 55th wedding anniversaries. Ronald preceded her in death on August 26, 1996. In 1948 Esther & her husband, Ron, joined Ron's parents operating the Burgdorf Greenhouses in Kiel until their retirement in 1995. Earlier in Esther & Ron's marriage the couple where avid dancers, especially enjoying square dancing. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church well into her later years, being a member of the Pastor Search Committee as well as the Presbyterian Women's Circle. She also was the first member of the Calumet County Homestead Board, a former active member of the Girl Scouts and a Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star where she held the office of Treasurer until the age of 87. Esther respected history & genealogy being a member of the Kiel Historical Society. She embraced the future through facebook & e-mails to all her family & friends throughout the world until just weeks before her death. Survivors include her three children; Robert (Sherrie) Burgdorf, Oshkosh, Patricia Reed, Chicago, IL, Richard (Leila) Burgdorf, Fond du Lac, six grandchildren; Andrew Burgdorf, Bethany (David) Curtis, David Burgdorf, Cheryl (Jeffrey) Foster, Michelle Burgdorf, William (Tammy) Burgdorf and four great grandchildren; Mattie Curtis, Thomas Foster, Savannah & Alison Burgdorf. She is further survived by one sister, Ruth Schlichting, Beaver Dam, one brother, E. W. "Chic" Wieting, Ft Myers, FL, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ron, parents, Irvin & Lydia Wieting, sister, Alice (William) Eimermann, son-in-law, Donald Reed and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Wieting. Funeral services for Esther will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, September 16, 2013 at First Presbyterian Church, 727 6th St., Kiel with Pastor Cheryl Lepak officiating. Burial will take place in Schleswig Cemetery, Rockville. Family and friends may call at the Meiselwitz-Vollstedt Funeral Home, 815 6th St., Kiel on Sunday from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm and at the church on Monday from 10:00 am until the time of service. Order of the Eastern Star service will be held at the funeral home on Sunday. A memorial has been established in her name. Esther's family would like to extend their thanks to the staff at Oak Creek Assisted Living and Heartland Hospice for the wonderful care she received.


RONALD F. BURGDORF Ronald F. Burgdorf, 83, of W231 Park Ave., Kiel, died Monday evening, Aug. 26, 1996 at Calumet Medical Center in Chilton after being admitted earlier in the day. He was born Jan. 11, 1913 in New Holstein, son of the late William and Erna Staeffler Burgdorf. He attended Kiel Elementary School and was a 1932 graduate of Kiel High School. On March 22, 1941 he married the former Esther Wieting at First Presbyterian Church in Kiel. The couple celebrated their 50th and 55th wedding anniversaries. He worked at Kiel Woodenware, Holton & Hunkel Greenhouses in Brown Deer, farmed from 1942 to 1945, then went to work for Sheboygan Greenhouses, working from 1945 to 1948. He graduated from Tommy Bright School for Floral Design in 1947. In 1948 he and his wife joined his parents and operated the former Burgdorf Greenhouse in Kiel until his retirement in July 1995. He and his father had an apiary, at one time having over 200 colonies. He worked for the state part-time inspecting bee yards. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Kiel since 1926. He was active in the Boy Scouts in his youth and later as a committee person. He was a member of Kiel Masonic Lodge, serving as its master as well as many other offices; a member of Tripoli Shrine; the Calumet County Shine Club, serving as president; a member of the Calumet Lodge # 172 F.&A.M.; a member of the Order of Eastern Star, New Holstein, Calumet Chapter 262; the Toastmaster's International; and Scottish Rite-Valley of Milwaukee. Survivors include his wife; three children, Robert (Charlotte) of Oshkosh, Patricia Reed of Morton Grove, Ill., and Richard (Leila) of Fond du Lac; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and six step-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Donald Reed. Funeral services were held Friday at Meiselwitz-Vollstedt Funeral Home in Kiel with the Rev. WM. C. BURGDORF William C. Burgdorf, 77, a Kiel florist and beekeeper, died at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital Friday. He entered the hospital Thursday. He was born in the Town of Plymouth Nov 26, 1887, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Burgdorf, and came with his parents to Kiel when a year old. He was married April 2, 1910, to Erna Staeffer of Kiel. The couple lived in New Holstein for five years and in Dysart, Iowa, before returning to Kiel. Before going into the florist business, Mr. Burgdorf was a painter. He learned the florist trade in Milwaukee before establishing a green house in Kiel in 1930. He was a life member of the Society of American Florists, member and treasurer of the Modern Woodmen Lodge No. 2838 of Kiel, member of State Beekeepers Association, a member and past president of the Calumet County Beekeepers Association, a member of the Kiel Garden Club and the Fond du Lac Pigeon Club. The couple observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1960. Surviving are his wife; one son, Ronald, who is associated in the family business; three grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Albert F. Bruhn, Kiel Funeral services will be held at the Meiselwitz Funeral home with the Rev. Allen L. Bowe, pastor of First Presbyterian Church officiating. She was Mrs. Gottlieb Burkhardt, aged 91. She had been living in the nursing home since 1956. The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from St. Peter's United Church of Christ with the Rev. Vernon Jaberg in charge. Burial was in the Rockville cemetery. The former Alma Gerlach(should be Glock) was born May 16, 1867, in the village of Franklin, Sheboygan county, daughter of the late Adam and Catherine Gerlach(should be Glock). In her early years she moved with her parents in Millhome, Manitowoc county, where she attended the district school. She was married to Gottlieb Burkhardt April 26, 1888, at Kiel. He was one of the original stockholders and served for a time as treasurer of Kiel Wooden Ware Co. Mr. Burkhardt was also super- intendent of the plant until retiring in 1936. He died April 23, 1956. Mrs. Burkhardt was a charter member of the Frauenverein of St. Peter's Evangelical and Reformed church. Four sisters and a brother preceded her in death. Survivors include two sons, Edgar of Milwaukee and Calvin of Elkhart, Indiana; and a daughter, Mrs. John Giese of Chicago. Also eight grand- children and 11 great grandchildren survive. BERTHA BURKHARDT B. Burkhardt Laid to Rest Miss Bertha Burkhardt, aged 77, a lifelong resident of Manitowoc county, passed away Thursday at her home at 926 6th st., this city. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at two o'clock at the Meiselwitz Funeral home, with Rev. E.L. Worthman officiating. Burial was made in the Rockville cemetery. Miss Burkhardt was born Dec. 20, 1870, the daughter of Matthias and Elizabeth Burkhardt, on the Burkhardt homestead north of Kiel. After the death of her sister, Mrs. William Meiselwitz, Miss Burkhardt dedicated herself to the care of that family, consisting of her brother- in-law and his three daughters: Miss Gertrude Meiselwitz, now of Maryville, Tenn., Mrs. R.J. (Elvera) Mullen of Clinton, Miss., and Mrs. H.J. (Bernice) Schwegler of Cincinnati, Ohio. Miss Burkhardt is survived by two sisters, Ida Burkhardt, and Mrs. Edgar Schunk, and two brothers, Gottlieb and Henry. A brother Willie, and sister Clara (Mrs. William Meiselwitz) preceded her in death. CHRISTOPHER BURKHARDT Christopher Burkhardt, an old resident of the town of Reseburg, died at Gus Schmidt's home in this village (Thorp, Clark County, Wis.) on Tuesday after an illness of three days, aged sixty-five years. Mr. Burkhardt suffered from an attack of hemorrhage of the lungs at the home of his nephew, Caesar Barth, in the town of Reseburg early on Sunday morning and was later in the day brought to this village. His condition being serious, he soon lapsed into unconsciousness and passed peacefully away about noon on Tuesday. He was a civil war veteran and bore the marks of many wounds inflicted while doing service in the south. His remains will be taken to Kiel, Wis. today for interment. Source: THORP COURIER (Thorp, Clark County, Wis.) 04/16/1903 ******** Last week Tuesday at Thorp, Mr. Christoph Burkhardt, a long time resident of the area, died at the age of 65 years. The deceased died from bleeding lungs, which he has had for the past three days. Mr. Burkhardt was born on January 6, 1828 in Rothenacker, Oberant Ehinger, Kingdom of Wurttenberg, and came to America with his mother and siblings in 1853. After staying in Buffalo and Thiensville the next three years, they settled on a farm in the town of Schleswig in 1856. He was married twice. In 1878 he left this area and settled in Thorp, Clark County and where he lived until he died. He was a veteran of the 26th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment and was at the Battle of Chancellorsville where he was severely wounded. His earthly remains were returned to Kiel on Thursday and the burial took place on Friday afternoon with numerous mourners, and members of GAR Post and the Kiel Arion Band at the Rockville Cemetery. EDGAR G. BURKHARDT Burkhardt, World War I Veterans Leader, Dies Edgar G. Burkhart Sr., 76, of 608 N. 6th St., past national commander of the Veterans of World War I, died unexpectedly early Sunday. He was pronounced dead the Plymouth Hospital after being stricken with an apparent heart attack while returning to Sheboygan from Oshkosh. Born Oct. 12, 1895, at Kiel, a son of the late Gottlieb and Alma Burkhardt, he attended public grade school and graduated from Kiel High School in 1913. He subsequently attended a Chicago Area business college. During World War I Mr. Burkhart served in the US Army Air Corps. On Dec. 8, 1919, he married Miss Emma Klessig of Cleveland. The couple resided in Milwaukee prior to coming to Sheboygan in 1960. At the time he retired, Mr. Burkhardt was employed as a deputy safety investigator for the Wisconsin Industrial Commission in Milwaukee. Mr. Burkhardt served as national commander of the Veterans of World War I in 1969 – 70. A past commander of Sheboygan Baracks 2091, WWI, he served 10 years as adjutant to the Wisconsin Department of the VWWI and was commander of its National Seventh Region. He also was a member of Prescott-Bayens Post 83 of the American Legion and was a former vice commander of the post as well as a past three-term Sheboygan County legion commander, past district commander and past state vice commander. He was a member of the Governor’s Veterans Memorial Commission, formerly served on the Wisconsin Veterans Council and was a former 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Schriners. Mr. Burkhardt also served as a member of a President’s Board on Problems of Senior Citizens. Surviving are his wife; three sons, Edgar G. Jr., Mequon, William of Madison and James of Bloomington, Minn.; one daughter, Mrs. Michael (Elizabeth) Licato of Milwaukee; 13 grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Helen Giese of Marion, Ind., and one brother, Calvin of Elkhart, Ind. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at Ballhorn Funeral Chapels, with the Rev. Paul Dodens, pastor of Crossroads Presbyterian Church, Mequon, officiating. Cremation will follow. ELIZABETH BURKHARDT Mrs. Elizabeth Burkhardt, one of the pioneer women of the town of Schleswig, near Kiel, where she lived for 65 years, was called to her reward on Wednesday afternoon of last week, at 4:30 o'clock, at the home of her son Henry and daughter Ida on the homestead farm. She enjoyed good health and was able to be up and around until about a week before she passed away, death being due to the infirmities of old age. Deceased, nee Feile, was born August 15, 1839, in Rothenacker, Wuerttemburg, Germany. She came to America in 1854 with her parents, who settled near Milwaukee. Four years later the family came to the town of Schleswig, where she was married in 1858 to Mathias Burkhardt. This union was blessed with eleven children, of which four passed away in their youth, and one daughter, wife of Wm. Meiselwitz, in 1906. Her husband also preceded her in death thirty years ago. The survivors are three sons and three daughters, as follows: Gottlieb, William, Henry, Anna, Bertha, and Ida, 7 grandchildren, and 3 great- grandchildren, and other relatives. She reached the advanced age of 83 years, 9 months and 3 days. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, from the late home, Rev. Wm. Rech officiating. Interment was made in the family lot in the Rockville cemetery. HENRY BURKHARDT Henry Burkhardt, a retired town of Schleswig farmer, died early Monday morning at Sheboygan Memorial hospital. He would have been 84 years old today. Struck with a heart attack six weeks ago, Mr. Burkhardt had been confined to the hospital for the past 10 days. Born Jan. 2, 1867, on the homestead farm, one mile north of Kiel, he took over opeation of the farm after the death of his father, Mathias, and was engaged in farming until his retirement six years ago. Mr. Burkhardt was unmarried. He is survived by a brother, Gottlieb, Kiel, and two sisters, Mrs. Edgar Schunk and Miss Ida Burkhardt, both on the homestead. His parents, two sisters and one brother preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Meiselwitz Funeral home, Kiel, with the Rev. Ernest J. Nelson, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, officiating. Interment will be in the Rockville cemetery. The body will lie in state at the funeral home after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. IDA BURKHARDT Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon for Miss Ida Burkhardt, 78, who died at St. Nicholas hospital Wednesday. The services were conducted from the First Presbyterian church in charge of Rev. E. J. Nelson. Burial was made in the Rockville cemetery. She was born in Schleswig in 1874, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mathias Burkhardt. After the death of her parents, she and a brother, the late Henry Burkhardt, operated the homestead farm. She retired five years ago. She was a member of the Presbyterian congregation, the Royal Neighbors, and the Kiel Frauenverein. Only survivor is a brother, Gottlieb of this city. MATHIAS BURKHARDT Mathias Burghardt (sic) of this city went to Milwaukee something over one week ago to have his eyes treated and went to a hospital. He became very unmanageable. The nurse went for assistance on Sunday night last and in her absence Burghardt jumped from a second story window and fell on his head. He died on Monday from his injuries.
