MICHAEL CHRISTEL (Article includes photo) Fatality at Kiel. Man Killed On Snowmobile. Kiel (Special) - A foot high pile-up of snow and ice under the edge of the Sheboygan River bridge was blamed for the death Sunday evening of a young Kiel snowmobile operator. Michael Christel, 23, of 1141 6th St., was killed when his head struck the bottom of the bridge as he was traveling west on the ice of the river at the southeast part of the city. Police Chief Emery Farrand reported that Christel and two companions were traveling on the river shortly after 7 o'clock when Christel's machine went over a build-up of snow and ice left there by drippings from the bridge railing. The clearance between the top of the snow pile to the bottom of the bridge, about four feet, was not sufficient and the driver struck the concrete span. Chief Farrand and Patrolman Ricky Sloan were called to the scene and took charge of the investigation. Manitowoc County Deputy Coroner Dr. R.G. Strong ruled Christel died of head injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene by a local physician. The other two snowmobilers were ... Wilkens had gone ahead and was several hundred feet up the river, while Walsdorf was about 100 feet ahead of Christel. Walsdorf's machine had run out of gasoline and on stopping he saw Christel's riderless snowmobile skimming over the ice. Seeing his companion injured he ran to a nearby service station to summon aid. Police said they were told that Christel was considered an experienced snowmobile operator as he had been driving for at least a year and one-half. A former serviceman, Christel had served 18 months in Germany with the U.S. Army. He was employed by the Walsdorf Roofing Co. of Kiel. He was born Dec. 7, 1945, the son of Eugene and Ruth Christel. He attended Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic grade school and was graduated from Kiel High School in 1964. Surviving are his parents; four sisters, all at home; five brothers, all at home, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Kazmeier, R. 2, Kiel, and I.H. Christel, Kiel. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ss. Peter and Paul Church with the Rev. George Kiefer, pastor, the celebrant of the requiem Mass. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Brief family rites will be held at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home at 9:30. Friends may call at the Meiselwitz Funeral Home after 3 p.m. Tuesday. The parish vigil will be at 8 o'clock Tuesday evening. Sheboygan Press, Mon. Feb. 10, 1969, p. 1, c. 6 ******** A 23-year old Kiel man, Michael Christel, 1141 Sixth Street, Kiel, was killed while operating his snowmobile on the Sheboygan River Sunday evening. The accident occurred at the First Street bridge in the city about 7:05 p.m. Christel and two companions, Michael Walsdorf and Gary Wilkens, both of Kiel, were coming back from an outing at Cedar lake when the accident happened. Wilkens was leading the group and followed a snowmobile path while going under the bridge. Walsdorf followed Wilkens and also made it through under the bridge. Wilkens kept on going up the river but Walsdorf’s machine clunked out about 100 feet west of the bridge. As he was checking it for fuel, Christel’s machine came by without a rider. Evidently Christel veered off the track and hit a snow drift which was about two feet high, just east of the bridge. After hitting the drift his machine hit the bottom of the cement bridge, ripping off the windshield. Christel’s head evidently hit the bridge as his helmet was shattered. Walsdorf immediately ran to a nearby filling station to call for help. A doctor and ambulance arrived on the scene shortly but Christel was pronounced dead upon their arrival. Dr. R. C. Strong, deputy coroner, investigated the accident and said Christel died of a skull fracture and broken neck. Kiel Police Chief Emery Farrand, stated that the clearance from the ice to the bottom of the bridge was about five feet, but that the snow drift which is at the east end, brings the snowmobile much closer to the bottom of the bridge. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Rev. George Kiefer officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Christel was born December 7, 1945, the son of Eugene G. and Ruth Kazmeier Christel. He attended Ss. Peter and Paul Parochial School and was graduated from Kiel High School in 1964. He entered the US Army in November 1965, served 18 months in Germany with the Second Armored Cavalry, and was discharged in November, 1967. He was employed by the Walsdorf Roofing Company, Kiel. LOIS D. DEDERING Find Bodies Of Couple In Parked Auto. Kiel (Special) - A young couple died early today in a car parked in a farm driveway off Highway 149, a half-mile west of here. The victims were identified as Miss Lois D. Dedering, 21, of 704 1st St., Kiel, and James Behnke, 21, of Reedsville. Leroy A. Hughes of Appleton, Calumet County coroner, said the deaths apparently were due to accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. The bodies of the young people were found about 6:40 a.m. by Robert Nett of R. 2, Kiel, who investigated when the Behnke car blocked the driveway to the Alvin Nett farm home. He said the bodies were slumped over in the front seat of the car. The engine of the car still was running and the windows were closed. The coroner reported that the couple had been dead for "an hour or two" before the bodies were discovered. A physician who was summoned to the scene notified Calumet County Sheriff C.J. Kosmosky at 7:30. The sheriff ordered the Behnke car to be taken to a garage at Kiel for inspection to determine whether there were any mechanical defects in the car's exhaust system. Mrs. Alvin Nett first noticed the parked car in the driveway when she awakened at 6:10. Her son investigated a half hour later when he was unable to drive past the car on his way to work.Behnke's identity was not determined for several hours. CLARENCE ELLIOT (caption of UPI diagram): Path of a plane crash. A rented single- engine plane crashed into two fog-shrouded apartment buildings yesterday in Chicago. The pilot Clarence Elliot, 30, of Kiel, Wis. and his passenger, Charles Brickner, of Sheboygan, Wis. both were killed. There were no other casualties. Plane bumps buildings in fatal crash. Chicago (AP) - "First there was the sound of an explosion, crashing, then I saw debris flying past our bedroom window," an apartment dweller said after a private plane hit his high-rise building in dense fog. Everett S. Carlson, whose apartment was hit first by the plane, continued, "I ran into the living room and called to my wife, 'Don't come in here. The living room's gone'." The crash Wednesday in Chicago's highly populated North Side took the lives of the two men in the plane, Clarence Elliott, 28, of Kiel, Wis., and Charles Brickner, 38, of Sheboygan Falls, Wis. Elliott, pilot of the rented plane, was assistant sales manager of the Lake-to-Lake Dairy Cooperative of Manitowoc, Wis., and Brickner was a salesman for the firm. Each of the men had five children. The crash occurred about five minutes after the plane took off from Meigs Field, Chicago's lakefront airport, at 7:23 a.m. Elliott had more than 11 years of flying experience, a spokesman fro the dairy cooperative said. Flying in fog, the plane brushed the corner of one apartment building at the 16th floor level, ricocheted, and scraped along the side of another apartment building at a slightly lower level before plunging into a vacant lot across the street. The impact tore the plane apart. Sections of the plane laned on Sherian Road, crowded with cars carrying commuters downtown. No one was injured. Daniel Comferford, control tower supervisor at Meigs, said he believed that Elliott suddenly encountered the fog, and, "as any good pilot would do under the circumstances" attempted to turn around and return to the field. The Chronicle Telegram, Elyria OH, Thurs. Feb. 16, 1967, p. 3, c. 4 *********** Kiel Pilot Had No Instrument Flying Rating. Chicago (AP) - A deputy coroner, a pilot for 28 years, criticized Federal Aviation Agency regulations Wednesday at an inquest into the deaths of two Wisconsin men in a light airplane crash. The coroner's jury decided the deaths of Clarence Elliot, 35, of Kiel, Wis., and his passenger, Charles Brickner, 39, of Sheboygan Falls, on Feb. 15, were accidental. Five minutes after takeoff from Meigs Field on Chicago's lake front, the plane hit two high-rise apartment buildings in the Edgewater Beach neighborhood to the north. Deputy coroner John Haigh, a flier since 1939, testified Elliot had logged only 414 flight hours and lacked an instrument flying rating. Thick fog on the day of the crash warranted instrument maneuvering, Haigh declared. The deputy related that Elliot had obtained flight clearance under FAA visual flight rules requiring only one-mile visibility at takeoff. He said weather reports indicated 2 1/2-mile visibility and a 500-foot ceiling at Meigs Field "although scattered curtains of fog were prevalent in the area of the crash." "All Elliot had to do was to ask for the visual flight ruling clearance and wait his turn," Haigh testified. He said weather reports indicated a possiblity of turbulent weather, fog, haze and ice. The witness said Elliot was estimated to have been flying at 160 feet although regulations required him to be at 1,000. "It was definitely instrument weather because of the restricted visibilities," Haigh said. "The visual flight rules were set up for persons who have instrument ratings." Elliot's brother, Allen, of Centralia, Ill., testified, "There was no reason why my brother had to get home in a hurry." The men were en route to Wisconsin. Manitowoc Herald Times, Thurs.
