EDMUND HANSKE KIEL MARSHAL, DIES OF INJURIES, RUN DOWN BY AUTO Norbert Lettenberger, 17, Taken into Custody and is Held Pending Verdict of Inquest BOY SPEEDER RAN DOWN VILLAGE OFFICER WEEK AGO Edward Hanske(sic), village marshal of Kiel, died today from injuries which he suffered ten days ago when he was run down by an automobile while attempting to arrest an alleged speeder on the streets of the village. Hanske had both legs fractured and suffered internal injuries and died from the effects. Following reports to the county authorities of Hanske's death, Norbert Lettenberger, aged 17 of Kiel, was taken into custody late today and held pending the verdict of the coroner's at the inquest which has been called at Kiel tomorrow. Lettenberger is said to have been the driver of the car which ran down Hanske. No warrant has been issued for the boy's arrest. Hanske was injured Sunday night, Aug. 23, when rushed into the roadway to halt Lettenberger who is said to have been driving at a high rate of speed. The boy failed to stop the car and it knocked Hanske down and passed over his body and it is reported that the driver did not halt to investigate the extent of the man's injury. The accident happened late in the evening and investigation which was started after it was found that Hanske had been seriously hurt, is said to have established that Lettenberger was the driver of the car. Should the coroner's jury hold Lettenberger responsible for Hanske's death, the boy will probably face prosecution on a charge of having caused the man's death by reckless and negligent driving. It will be the first case of the kind in Manitowoc county. Mr. Hanske was 45 years of age and held office as street commissioner and village marshal. He was married and has a family. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Sept. 4, 1914 page 1 ********** Kiel—Because of the death of the village marshall, Edmund Hanske, an inquest was ordered by Coroner Folge of Manitowoc at the village hall. Being sworn in were J. B. Laun, Peter Daleiden, Joseph Schaller, Philip Mueller, Wm. Matthias and Peter Arnold. Eighteen year old Norbert Lettenberger was arrested shortly after the marshall’s death which was caused by Mr. Lettenberger’s neglect of stopping after the marshall’s orders. Mr. Hanske was 46 years, 6 months and 26 days old, was born in Cook County, Illinois and came to Kiel at the age of 2 1/2 years. He lost his father at the age of 13 and was raised by his grandparents. In 1891 he was married to Maria Duerwachter, the marriage producing one daughter. He was a dedicated worker for the village of Kiel. Besides his wife he is survived by his daughter, Thekla, his mother, 2 sisters and other relatives. The burial is Tuesday afternoon ion the Kiel Cemetery with Pastor Rech officiating. Members of the Turners, the Odd Fellows Lodge, the Mens’ Choir and the fire department attended the funeral as a group. Plymouth Post, September 12, 1914 ********* DID HANSKE STEP FROM BEHIND AUTO TO MEET HIS DEATH? DEFENSE IN LETTENBERGER CASE BELIEVED FROM TESTIMONY OF FIRST WITNESS TO BE ALONG THIS LINE That Edward Hanske, deceased marshall of Kiel for whose death Norbert Lettenberger, aged 17, is on trial in circuit court, was responsible for the fatal accident when he was run down Aug. 23, is the defense outlined for Lettenberger by the first witness called for the defense this afternoon. Mrs. Bunke, the witness, testified that an automobile was standing at the curb on the side on which Hanske was later found, the defense seeking to establish that Hanske stepped from behind the machine or off the walk into the path of the Lettenberger car and that the driver of the latter machine could not see him or know his intention. Mrs. Bunke testified that had Hanske started across the street she should have been able to see him but that she did not until after the collision when she went to his aid. The state rested at 2:30 this afternoon after calling six witnesses, one of whom, Albert Laun, a Kiel youth who came here from the university to testify, was an eye witness to the accident. Laun said that Lettenberger had made no move to avoid the collision. Other witnesses testified that Lettenberger had been warned against fast driving. District Attorney Schmitz is conducting the prosecution and Attorney Hougen and Brady and Isaac Craite appear for the defense. Lettenberger is charged with manslaughter in the fourth degree. The case may go to the jury tomorrow. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Friday, January 15, 1915, Page 1

He has a wife and four children. Manitowoc Pilot Thursday, February 10, 1881 ********* HANSKE’S BODY –The Wife of the Murdered Man Bringing It Home To Wisconsin A St. Louis paper says that the body of Julius Hanske, the man who was murdered three weeks ago by Thomas J. Stull, was disinterred from the Potter’s Field, by Brown & Sullivan, City Undertakers, and brought to the Morgue for the widow, who had decided to take it back and bury it in the village of Kiel, Wisconsin, the place where Hanske had lived for many years. When she came to the morgue she found her husband’s body in a handsome rosewood casket. In spite of the fact that it had been seventeen days buried there was little or no change, and dressed in a neat suit of black, with the collar and neckcloth hiding the wound in the throat, Hanske appeared asleep instead of dead. His widow stood above him silent, for a moment and then broke down; her grief was pitable. She left for the home of her aunt on Jefferson avenue, and in the evening, accompanied her brother, started back to Wisconsin, taking her husband’s corpse with her. Hanske who was Marshall of the village was killed by being hit by an automobile driven by Norbert Lettenberger, 18, when he stepped into the roadway to stop the car which he alleged was speeding. Lettenberger was later freed by a jury when arrested on a charge of murder, which was later changed to manslaughter. Notwithstanding that the disease is deemed both contagious and extremely dangerous, people afflicted with it do not take the necessary steps to prevent its spread. Nothing but the vigilance of the suspicious and the school board can keep it from spreading among the school children. Manitowoc Pilot Thursday, January 25, 1883
