Manitowoc Herald Times, Saturday, May 31, 1924 ********* HUNDREDS PAY LAST TRIBUTE TO F. STANGEL Funeral at Tisch Mills Largest Ever Held in Section Hundreds of friends from throughout this section of the state, including many from this city, attended the funeral of Frank W. Stangel of Tisch Mills, held today, the funeral being one of the largest ever known in the Eastern section of Wisconsin, it is said. Delegations from Kewaunee, Sturgeon Bay, Door, Manitowoc and Brown County were present. C. J. Stangel and family, W. A. Hutchhausen and many others from here attended. The death of Mr. Stangel takes from Tisch Mills one of its most prominent and progressive citizens. His were the chief efforts which years ago brought about the fire fighting equipment in this village, the County Line Telephone, and later the establishment of the State Bank and the obtainance of the trunk highway through here. As unselfishly as he worked for the public good, he also ardently worked for the support of the church and religion of his choice. There was no bigotry in his heart; his helping hand was open to all, and no call for aid, no matter in what form, was left unanswered. The less fortunate received assistance without a call; charity reigned in his heart. Refused Public Offices Interested in politics, Mr. Stangel had many times during his life been called upon to run for different public offices to which he never consented. He was, however, an officer of the school board and also an officer and trustee of the church for years. He filled a vacancy for town chairman but refused to run for election and had been notary republic and justice of the peace continuously for years. Fraternally, he was a member of the K. of C. Catholic Knights of Wisconsin; member and officer of the American Catholic Central Union, and also of the Holy Name Society. At the time of his death, he was president of the Tisch Mills State Bank and head of the store cheese factory in which he was co-partner with his two sons Joseph and Edward. Just before his illness, he was named as director of the Wisconsin Southern Railway company but illness prevented any action on the offer. Surviving Family Mr. Stangel married Mary Rezech Jan. 30, 1883. Nine children were born to them, eight children and Mrs. Rezech now surviving. They are Joseph and Edward, partners in the F.W. Stangel Sons local business; Otto, former athlete at the University of Wisconsin, and member of the All Western team, now president of an Agricultural college at Farm School, Pennsylvania; Daniel, graduating this month in the college of Dentistry, Marquette University; Frank O., Director of Physical Education, Oak Park (Ill.) high school, and Mrs. Lucille Jansky of Rockwood, Mrs. Sybil Schlies of Tisch Mills, and Mrs. George Spevachek of Manitowoc. Two brothers, Joseph J. and John, and six grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held from St. Mary’s Catholic church with a solemn requiem high mass at which the Rev. Father Shimek was Celebrant and the Revs. Rous of Kellnersville, Kubale of Kewaunee, Kolar of Reedsville acted as deacons and assistants. Other priests were also present. Fraternal and civic organizations with which Mr. Stangel was affiliated attended in bodies. The cortege formed at the home of the deceased and marched to the church. Manitowoc Herald Times, June 3, 1924 ********* CORTEGE FOR STANGEL OVER HALF MILE LONG (By Special Correspondent) TISCH MILLS, June 4— In the midst of a bed of flowers that breathed a fragrance of last fond remembrance, all that was earthly of the late Frank W. Stangel, head of the F. W. Stangel & Sons company was laid to his last resting place at the local cemetery yesterday. During the three days previous hundreds of people from this community and near-by cities visited the grief-stricken home where the beloved citizen of this community lay in state. Unquestionably, the largest throng that ever gathered to pay its last tribute to a citizen was present yesterday. The cortege formed at the village at the home of the deceased with the local and near-by branches of fraternal organizations’ marching bodies which headed the procession; then the concourse moved toward the church. The bell tolled, impressing upon the stricken community that its leading citizen was making his last march. As the first line of marchers moved up to the church, the last of the line of citizens was still marching from the village a half mile distant. The church proved much too small to accommodate the large assemblage. Relatives and citizens from miles around and representatives and their families of business establishments of the cities of Manitowoc, Two Rivers, and Kewaunee, formed the assemblage. Solemn Requiem Mass Solemn Requiem High Mass was sung at ten o’clock at the St. Mary’s Catholic church, the Rev. Father Shimek, pastor of the local church, officiating as celebrant. The Rev. Kubale of Kewaunee was deacon, Father J.G. Rous of Kellnersville sub-deacon, and Rev. F. Kolar of Reedsville was in the sanctuary. A short eulogy paid to the departed was made in the Bohemian language by Rev. Rous, a former pastor of this parish, and similarly Father Shimek, in the English language, called attention to the personal attributes of the deceased and the ideal c____ than life he led. The pall bearer for the Knights of Columbus was Wenzel Tomek; for the Tisch Mills State Bank, Anton Olson; for the American Catholic Central Union, Wenzel Forst; Holy Name Society, Joseph A. Stangel; and as a schoolmate, Anton Schauer. The relatives and friends living more distant, outside of the members of the immediate family in attendance were Mr. and Mrs. Gast. Hubert of Menominee, Mich.; Prof. and Mrs. J.F. Wojta of Madison; Wenzel Wojta of Reedsville; A. Groulik of Racine; Mrs. C. Straka and J. Heinka of Milwaukee and the Messrs. Matt Soukup and Joseph Pivonka of Sturgeon Bay. Manitowoc Herald Times, Wednesday, June 4, 1924 ********* Kewaunee Enterprise: Frank W. Stangel of Tisch Mills was in the city on one of his periodical business trips. For 28 years Mr. Stangel has been postmaster at Tisch Mills. Elections have come and gone. First one party would win and then the other, but during the entire 28 years Mr. Stangel has given such excellent service that none ever thought of making a change. Mr. Stangel is not a politician but he is a business man and the large mercantile business which he owns attests to his close attention to work and his industry. FRANTISEK STANGEL ? A BRIGHT LIFE Death’s Cruel Visitation Terminates Promising Career of Frank Stangel WELL KNOWN YOUNG MAN DEAD Was Student in Closing Year at Chicago Dental College— Attended School Here—Body Brought Home Today Death which came to Frank Stangel, a Manitowoc county boy in Chicago Saturday cut short a promising career and brought to a close the bright life whose possibilities were just becoming apparent. Deceased was 22 years of age and was in the closing years of a course at the Chicago Dental College, from which institution he was to have graduated in June. He was ill but a few days, suffering an attack of typhoid fever and not until Friday was his condition considered serious or alarming. Relatives here were notified and Saturday morning his father departed for Chicago, arriving only to find that his son had passed away an hour previous. Frank Stangel was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Wenzel Stangel, of Tisch Mills and had spent his entire life in this county. He attended school in the city and was later employed in a clerical position by the Chas. Salak Co. Two years ago he became a student in dentistry at the Milwaukee Medical College and this year had taken up his work at the Chicago college and expected to complete the course in June. He was 22 years of age and was possessed of a high mind, of studious character and had made rapid progress. Energetic and ambitious, his success was certain and his untimely death is indeed sad. The body was brought here today and will be taken to Tisch Mills for burial tomorrow. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Monday, December 15, 1902, Page 1 ********* (From the correspondent in Mishicott, 16 Dec.) A telegram arrived here yesterday reporting that Mr. F. Stangel, who was studying dentistry at Chicago Medical College, had died there of "nerve fever" (Nervenfieber). He was born in Tisch Mills where his surviving parents still reside. Mr. Stangel at the time of his death was finishing a course in dentistry. He had for several years been a student in the Dental department of the Milwaukee Medical College. He was 22 years old at the time of his death and would have completed his professional course next spring. His death is untimely and is widely deplored. It cuts a life off just at the entrance of manhood when the future was glistening with promise. The young man had been in business as a clerk in this city for some years but having ambitions he took up the study of dentistry and applied himself with great diligence to the work. He was faithful and intelligent and because of sterling qualities he became widely known and respected and his success was practically assured. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Wenzel Stangel at Tisch Mills, who have long been residents of that town. Mr. Stangel had always enjoyed robust health but he contracted typhoid fever some time ago and it was not until last week that his illness took a serious turn. His father was summoned to his bedside but one hour before he arrived in Chicago the young man had passed away. Manitowoc Pilot, December 18, 1902 ********* The many friends of Mr. Frank Stangel were shocked and grieved Sunday to hear that he had died that morning in Chicago of typhoid fever. Mr. Stangel was for many years a clerk in one of our local stores. He possessed many noble traits of character which won him many dear and warm friends who regret his untimely taking off. Pall bearers were six grandsons of the decedent. Mr. Stangel, one of the best known pioneers of Manitowoc and Kewaunee counties died at the home of his son Paul Stangel at Kewaunee, after an illness of only a few days. Up and about to within three days of his death, his taking away was sudden. Came Here in 1853 Born in Bohemia May 7, 1836, Mr. Stangel came to Manitowoc county in 1853 and after three years here homesteaded a farm at Tisch Mills. For many years he conducted what was known as the County Line house at Tisch Mills and later erected a building on what is now the site of the Tisch Mills bank. In later years he purchased a farm in Carlton, Kewaunee county and after the death of his wife in 1904 made his home with his sons there and at Kewaunee. Mr. Stangel was widely known in Manitowoc and Kewaunee counties and was universally respected. Manitowoc Herald News, January 26, 1924 P. 2 ********** COUNTY PIONEER IS CALLED Joseph Stangel Sr., one of the best known early pioneers of Kewaunee County, died Thursday at the home of his son, Paul. His demise was due to ailments attributed to old age. Mr. Stangel, who was in his eighty-eighth year, was born in Bohemia on the seventh day of May, 1936. At the age of seventeen in 1853 he emigrated to America to see his fortune in a land of promise, the splendid opportunities of which had been told to him in his native land. Upon his arrival in New York City he determined to come to Wisconsin and accordingly set out for Milwaukee, then as now, the larges city in the state. He remained at the metropolis for a few years and then came to Kossuth, Manitowoc County where he found employment and remained for two or three years. Opportunity presenting itself, he took up a homestead after that time at which is now Tisch Mills. In 1857 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Holub at Kellnersville and immediately afterward moved to his homestead and began the tedious task of clearing the virgin timberland so that he might profitably follow agricultural pursuits. His lot was that of many of the sturdy pioneers who laid the foundation for that prosperous community and it was only through energy, industry and good management that he became deservedly successful. He later built the County Line House at Tisch Mills on the site where the Bank of Tisch Mills is now located. He was the first Postmaster at Tisch Mills and conducted the post office in connection with his other business activity for five years after which he disposed of his property and purchased a farm in the Town of Carlton. He afterward sold this farm to his son and purchased another in the same town, which he operated for twenty years, enjoying all the while to an eminent degree the highest esteem and respect of the entire community. It was while the family resided on this latter farm that his estimable wife died on June 29, 1905 and after that Mr. Stangel retired from active work and made his home with his son, Louis until 1922 when the latter moved to this city. He then made his home with his son, Paul, in this city where he had been living in quiet retirement when death came. Surviving him are four sons and two daughters, Paul and Louis of this city, John of Carlton, Joseph of Two Rivers, Mrs. Joseph (Mary) Jansky of Tisch Mills and Mrs. Chas (Josephine) Schleis of West Kewaunee. OTTO A. STANGEL Otto A. Stangel, Ex-Cager, Dies in Minnesota TWO RIVERS— Otto A. Stangel, 65, a native of Tisch Mills who rose to athletic fame as a basketball star at the University of Wisconsin 40 years ago, died Thursday at his home in St. Cloud, Minn. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Klein & Stangel Inc., Funeral Home, and at the St. Mary Catholic Church, Tisch Mills. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Born in Tisch Mills, March 23, 1889, son of the late Frank and Mary Stangel, owners of the F.W. Stangel and Sons Store at Tisch Mills, he attended rural schools in the Tisch Mills area and enrolled in Washington High School here. He joined the high school five and although he had never played the game before quickly made the school team. He also played on a city team in Two Rivers. In those early days, there were no WIAA rules against playing on other teams outside of the high school. Set Scoring Record Stangel entered the state university and although only 5 feet 6 inches tall, and weighing a mere 143 pounds, he made the freshman basketball team and landed a forward berth on the Badger varsity in the 1910-1911 season. That was in the early years of the reign of the late Doctor Walter Meanwell, Wisconsin basketball coach whose teams for years were leaders in the Western conference. In 1912 Doctor Meanwell had a big year as Wisconsin rode roughshod over the Western Conference fives, winning the championship. The Badgers won 12 straight conference games that season. Stangel dropped in 64 field goals and 49 free throws for 177 points, to lead the conference. That record stood for 27 years. That championship year, Stangel was named an all conference forward and he was given unstinted praise by newspapers in the conference cities. His ability to dribble, elude defensive players and drive in close for layup shots made Stangel the scourge of other conference teams that 1912 season. The crowning achievement of the Badger varsity that 1911-1912 season was in a game against Indiana in which Wisconsin won 51 to 10. He was quick to master the short pass-weaving style of Coach Meanwell. In the Iowa game that season Stangel scored 30 of 38 points that the Badgers racked up. Served During War Following his graduation from the University of Wisconsin, Stangel enlisted in the armed services in World War I. He served as a First Lieutenant in an artillery unit in Europe. After the war he served as an agricultural instructor in Pennsylvania, returning to Manitowoc as a supervisor of the Pabst farms there. During the past 15 years he had been associated with the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a farm home and loan administrator. On August 3, 1920, he married the former Mildred Hubert of Marinette. She survives with two brothers, Joseph of Manitowoc and Frank of Milwaukee; three sisters, Mrs. Lucy Jansky of Rockwood and Mrs. Mary Kries and Mrs. Sybil Schlies of Manitowoc. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Sunday. The Rosary will be recited at the funeral home at 8 p.m. Sunday. Manitowoc Herald Times, Friday, March 30, 1956
