JOSEPH SCHLEIS LIQUOR AGENT BORROWS GUN TO TAKE LIFE Body of Joseph Schleis, 45, Found in Woods, Southwest of Tisch Mills Joseph P. Schleis, 45, Tisch Mills liquor salesman and village businessman, ended his life this morning by shooting himself through the heart with a double-barreled shotgun. His lifeless body, slumped over a clump of bushes, was discovered shortly before noon today, in the woods two miles southeast of Tisch Mills by a searching party. Dr. Gerald Rau, county coroner, and Sheriff Norman Berkedal, called to the scene, announced this afternoon there will probably be no inquest. Relatives and business associates of Mr. Schleis could ascribe no reason for his act. He was last seen shortly after he left his home in the village at 7 o’clock this morning. He called on Louis Skubal and borrowed a shotgun from the latter. Then he drove out of the village in a southerly direction. Schleis traveled northern Manitowoc county and part of Kewaunee county for the R. F. Klingholz Liquor company, Manitowoc. He was also part owner of the Schleis & Konop flour mill in Tisch Mills. When his car was noticed parked on the highway, it was decided to make a search. Edward Schleis, a brother of Joseph, and Victor Konop, and Louis Skubal found Joseph’s lifeless body. The position of the gun indicated he had placed the butt in a fork in a tree, held the barrel against his breast, and fired by pressing a small twig against the trigger. Mr. Schleis has been a lifelong resident of Tisch Mills. He is survived by his widow who was Miss Sybyl Stangel, a son Norbert, 21, and several brothers and sisters. MATT SCHLEIS Poisoning Takes Life of 74-Year-Old Tisch Mills- A 75 year-old man was found dead and his wife, 63, in critical condition, as the result of a carbon monoxide poisoning at the home Thursday morning. Mat. Schleis, a retired harness maker, and his wife were found by neighbors in a bedroom of their home located in Tisch Mills, just over the Manitowoc County border line, in Kewaunee County. According to Darwin Legois Kewaunee County sheriff, the poisoning resulted from a blocked vent in the LP gas heater system. He said there were two vents leading to the outside of the home for circulation and that Mr. Schleis had apparently blocked off one of the vents feeling that too much eat was being lost. The blockage was due to a cover from a peanut butter jar. Found Breathing Legois said Kewaunee County coroner Victor Cherovsky estimated the time of death at about 7 a.m. The accident was discovered at about 11 a.m. Kewaunee County authorities surmised that Mr. Schleis had blocked off the vent, which ran partially into his bedroom, and then had taken a walk into his wife's room. His body was found slumped over on her bed and she was still in bed. Mrs. Schleis was found breathing and was moved to a couch in the living room. There was no vent running through her room but there was on close to it, in the hallway. Legois said authorities began to search for a means of poisoning immediately because of the heavy white foam around Mr. Schleis face which is indicative of gas poisoning. Mrs. Schleis was moved to Two Rivers Municipal Hospital where it was reported Friday that she is recovering. Funeral services for Mr. Schleis will be at 9:15 a.m. Monday at Klein & Stangel Inc., Funeral Home, Two Rivers, and at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Tisch Mills, the Rev. Donald Feller officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery. Retired in 1952 Mr. Schleis was born Sept. 5, 1884, at Stangelville, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Schleis. WENCEL SHEBESTA Mishicot Farmer Killed While Blasting Stumps Wenzel Shebesta, 51-year-old town of Mishicot farmer and father of nine children, was instantly killed Friday afternoon while engaged in blasting stumps on the farm of a neighbor, Frank Kowalski, Gibson. Shebesta was struck full in the face by a charge of dynamite he had placed in the stump of an old tree a few moments before. Was Blasting Stumps The farmer was dead when a son Raymond, 22, and a companion, Joseph Robinson, working with him in blasting stumps on the Kowalski farm, six miles north of the village of Mishicot, reached his side. Shebesta’s face was mutilated and his skull fractured. The younger Shebesta and Robinson moved the farmer to the Martin Hodek farm. Coroner Gerald Rau, Two Rivers, summoned to the scene, announced that there would be no inquest. The body was removed to the Beduhn funeral home, Two Rivers. Shebesta, who was experienced in the handling of dynamite, is believed to have become careless for a moment Friday afternoon and peered from behind a tree 60 feet from the stump where he had placed two sticks of dynamite. At that moment the charge let go and Shebesta was struck in the face. Raymond Shebesta and Robinson, who had retreated a considerable distance farther than Wenzel Shebesta, told the coroner that they turned their backs as the dynamite charge exploded. When they looked around, they noted the elder Shebesta crumpled in a heap alongside a tree. Born in Mishicot Mr. Shebesta was born in the town of Mishicot 51 years ago and for years operated the homestead farm. Twenty-five years ago, he married Miss Mary Aulik at Tisch Mills. JOSEF SINCULA From Dr. Crocker, of this place, we learn of the death of a young man at Two Creeks by the name of Jos. Sinclair (sic), which was caused by the swallowing of a tufted brad, used as a bullet in an air gun. He was shooting at a target with a glass tube blow gun, when the bullet or brad became lodged in the tube and he endeavored to draw it out by sucking at the end of the tube. He drew the brad from the tube but it lodged in his throat, where it remained for more than a month, causing almost incessant coughing, which brought on quick consumption and resulted in his death.
