SARA G. EIS Rural Two Rivers Girl, 5 Runs into Auto’s Path, Dies. The other weekend traffic victim was Sara G. Eis, five year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Eis, of Rt. 2, Two Rivers. She was fatally injured shortly before noon Saturday when she climbed out of her father’s parked truck and ran into the path of an automobile nearly two miles northwest of Two Rivers on a town road. Flentje, Mishicot, Hit By Unkown Hunter- Alex Jacobson, Former Two Riversite Killed Two Manitowoc count men are among the first victims of the deer hunting season in Wisconsin, dispatches today reporting the fatal injury of Henry Flentje, 43, of Mishicot, near Mercer, Wis., and messages having been received of the death of Alexander Jacobson, 30, of Rice Lake, former Two Rivers resident who was killed by a stray bullet Monday. Mr. Jacobson, who was a nephew of Mrs. George Peterick of Shoto, was the first victim of the deer hunting season in the state. First news of the tragedy came to relatives in this county, in publication of Associated Press dispatches in the Herald-News Monday night, and reports were later confirmed in telephone messages received from Rice Lake by Mrs. Peterick. Formerly Operated Dray Line Henry Flentje of Mishicot, formerly employed at Plant No. 4 of the Aluminum Goods Co. at Two Rivers and who at one time operated a dray line between Two Rivers and Mishicot, has been a resident of Mishicot for practically all of his life. He was mortally wounded when he was shot through the head by an unknown hunter on a deer trail at Rice Lake, near Mercer, in Vilas county late yesterday afternoon. With Mr. Flentje at the time were his son, Howard, and two other men. No trace of the man who fired the shot has been found, according to Associated Press messages which were received at Manitowoc this morning. Mr. Flentje left with a party of local hunters for the deer country on the last day of November and expected to return to his home at Mishicot sometime this week. Born at Mishicot He was born in the town of Mishicot on May 28, 1885 and with the exception of several years spent at Racine lived in the township all of his lifetime. For the past number of years, he was a buffer at the Two Rivers plant of the Goods company. In addition to his aged father, Charles Flentje, now a resident of Green Bay, he is survived by his widow, two children, Eveleyn and Howard, at home, two brothers, Edward at Mishicot and Charles at Cavoer, Wisconsin, four sisters, Mrs. Herman Wicke, Mrs. Norman Thompson, Mrs. Wenzel Urbanek and Mrs. Tracy Thompson, all of Manitowoc. Funeral arrangements have not been completed, the family receiving only the most minute details of the accident…. Manitowoc Herald News, Wednesday, December 5, 1928 P. 2 ******* FATALITIES IN NORTH WOODS ....Henry Flenje of Mishicot was killed by a bullet that left the barrel of a gun at quite some distance away. The shot may have been fired into the air, as explained above, or someone may have been shooting at deer on a hill, in which case the bullet would travel quite some distance without encountering anything to stop it. In a case of that kind the deplorable shooting of a man can be termed unavoidable accident, and in the sad death of Mr. Flentje, it probably will never be learned who fired the fatal shot. HIRAM FORTIER City and County: Hiram Fortier is lying dangerously ill at the house of his brother-in-law, Judge Craite. Mr. Fortier had to discontinue teaching school six weeks ago. Manitowoc Pilot Thursday, July 15, 1897 pg. 3 ********* After a prolonged illness Mr. Hiram Fortier died at the home of his uncle Judge Craite at Manitowoc, last Saturday. Hiram was a Mishicott boy until recently when his illness compelled him to place himself under medical care at Manitowoc. Upon his friends here, the tidings of his death produced a feeling of inexpressible sadness. It seemed to us but yesterday that Hiram had been with us, bright and joy always, full of health and a leader in all amusements. Today he lies peacefully sleeping his last sleep beneath the sod. His schoolmates and boyhood friends gathered at the side of his grave and sadly offered their last loving tribute of flowers and song. It is not for us living ones to speak anything but words of praise for our departed friend. He was always kind and considerate to others, of a happy disposition, and eager always to do a friend a favor. The blow was a hard one to the bereaved family and especially to his widowed mother whose idol he was. Deceased was 22 years of age. Until the age of 19 he had worked on the farm and his education was very limited. But not being a very strong man physically, he determined to improve his education and become a teacher. After a year of hard study he successfully passed the examination and two years of creditable educational labor followed ending in his breaking down in health and strength and then came the end in the very bloom of his young existence. The funeral was one of the largest that has taken place here for years. FRANZ VALENTIN GALMBACHER The Two Rivers Chronicle has the following item: Last Tuesday little Frankie Gallenbacher, a four year old son of the Mishicott miller fell into the water just below the mill and was drowned. The fall must have stunned him for the water was not deep enough to otherwise have drowned him. The first knowledge his father had of the sad event was the sight of his body lying under the water upon the pebbles, just beneath one of the windows of the mill, while leaning out of that window for a breath of fresh air. The little fellow was immediately taken from the water but life was extinct and all efforts to resuscitate him were futile. LOUIS GREENWOOD Notes From Jambo Creek: Mr. Louis Greenwood died Monday Dec. 22 at the home of his son William in the town of Gibson at the age of 94 years. He leaves an aged wife, eight sons and one daughter to mourn his death. Mr. John Greenwood from Lena, Wis., and Frank Greenwood from Oconto Falls were here a few days last week to attend the funeral of their father. Manitowoc Pilot January 1, 1914 P.8 *********** Mr. and Mrs. Louis Greenwood, of Mishicott, believed to be among the oldest married couple in the state, recently celebrated their ninety-second birthdays. They were married in Canada in 1843 and have resided here since 1854. Up until recently both enjoyed fair health but of late they have failed. Manitowoc Daily Herald, December 2, 1913 p.2 ******* (1900 Gibson census- Louis Greenwood b. 1823 age 77 yrs.; wife Sophie b. 1823 age 77 yrs) They weren't on the 1910 census unless it was mis-spelled. ******* OLD TIMERS The Old Timers column will be continued as long as we find the persons who have a vivid recollection of the early days and who are entitled to recognition as Old Timers by having lived in this vicinity previous to 1856. The distinction of being the oldest married couple in this county and probably the state is enjoyed by Mr. and Mrs. Louis Greenwood of Mishicot. They have shared each others joys and sorrows as man and wife for seventy years. Their wedding took place at St. Thomas, Canada in 1843. In 1854 they came to this county being with them four children. Most of the time has been spent on the farm and they are the parents of twelve children of whom eleven are living. The oldest son died while serving in the civil war in Company Y, 17th Wisconsin Infantry. This exceptional old couple enjoys the further distinction of having eighty-six living descendants. There are forty-two grandchildren and thirty-five great grandchildren. Both are ninety-two years of age. Mr. Greenwood was born in February and his wife in April, 1821. When they arrived, the Mishicot post office had just been established. It was opened in June, 1854 and F.M. Falrich was post master. It was the time too when cholera was epidemic for a time at Manitowoc and since other parts of the county and some people left the settlement and went on farms for awhile to escape the scourge. Up to a few weeks ago, Mr. Greenwood has spent some time almost every day chopping wood on his farm. He and his wife are now however fast declining. She has been unable to walk for some time on account of paralysis. A week ago, Mr. Greenwood was taken ill and he is now confined to his bed from which he does not expect to rise again. His mind is still rational while his wife's is beginning to show the effects of age. He realizes that his end is near. Even though his life had been much longer than the allotted age, he says that it has passed swiftly endorsing those favorite lines which Lincoln often quoted. "Then why should the spirits of mortals be proud? Like a fast flying meteor, a swift flying cloud. A flash of the lightning, a break of the wave, And he passeth from life to his rest in the grave." The Reporter, Sat., Nov. 29, 1913

MOSES GREENWOOD Moses Greenwood Dies at Manitowoc Thursday Evening. Moses Greenwood, 92, one of the earliest white children born in Manitowoc County died Thursday night at Holy Family Hospital here. He had observed his 92nd birthday last month at his small cottage at King’s Bridge. He was born in the town of Mishicot in 1852, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Greenwood. When a boy, he went to a lumber camp near Laona and was employed there until he suffered the loss of an arm in an industrial accident. Despite this handicap, he returned to this county to engage in farming. Interment will be in Mishicot. Manitowoc Herald Times, April 15, 1944 ******** Moses Thought He Might Be 100, Grave Marker Shows 92. (Photo) Moses Greenwood, who has struggled through a long life on the farm even though handicapped with the loss of his right arm in a logging accident when he was a boy of nine, today observed his birthday at his small cottage north of King’s Bridge. Moses, who admitted that his memory on when he was born is a bit hazy, opined he “might be about 100 years old.” He added, however, that he had purchased a tombstone for his grave marker in Manitowoc many years ago and this might tell better. It did. The date of his birth on the red granite marker was 1852. That makes Mr. Greenwood 92 years old today. His father Henry came to Wisconsin from Canada, settling at Two Rivers to engage in fishing. There were ten boys and two girls in the family so Moses early decided to seek employment in other parts. When a boy of nine years, he went into the lumber camps of Laona as a timekeeper and in an accident there, lost his arm. But this did not discourage him and he came back to Manitowoc County to engage in farming. Greenwood recalled many of the privations and hardships in the county in the early days. He often walked to Manitowoc to get groceries for the family. Even with his advancing years, he is able to do small tasks about the small farm. His wife died several years ago and his housekeeper is Mrs. Frank Worth who has four sons in the armed services. Manitowoc Herald Times, Saturday, March 4, 1944

RUDOLPH GUSE Fatal Shooting A particularly sad and fatal accident happened in the northern portion of the Town of Mishicott last Thursday and resulted in the death of Rudolph Guse, the 13 year old son of Mr. A. Guse of that town. Otto Guse, an older son, was out rabbit hunting and happened to pass by the school house where his brother, Rudolph was attending, just as the boys were having a recess. His brother came up behind him and asked to see the gun, at the same time taking hold of the muzzle and drawing it towards him. In some way, no one knows just how, the lock caught and the gun was discharged, the contents lodging in the boy's right side, causing injuries from which he died in a few hours.
