HENRY OSCAR HELGESON VALDERS MAN KILLED WHEN STRUCK BY TREE Skull Fractured by Falling Tree While at Work in Timber Lot Henry Helgeson, 51, living one mile west of the village of Valders, died of a skull fracture at his home at 9 o’clock last night, the victim of a falling tree which he cut down for lumber in a timber tract owned jointly by him and Gustave Gilbert. The accident occurred at 9 o’clock yesterday morning, shortly after the men had started their work and Gilbert, who witnessed the mishap, took Helgeson in a car to rush him to his home. Drs. Rauch and Farrell were called and an examination revealed the fracture at the base of the skull, leaving little hope for recovery. The death followed last night. Helgeson was caught a glancing blow by a limb of the tree as it was felled and was struck to the ground. Gilbert came to his assistance immediately and Helgeson was able to get up and sat up in the car on the trip to his home. He apparently dozed on the way, the tract being about two miles from his home. It was not until after the doctors had been called the graveness of the injury was realized. Born in the county, Helgeson had always made his home here. He is survived by his widow and five [six] children and several brothers and sisters. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 1 o’clock from the home and 2 o’clock from the Lutheran church at Valders, Rev. O.K. Espeseth officiating. Burial will be at the Valders cemetery. JOHN C. TORRISON BITES TONGUE, BLOOD POISON AND THEN DEATH John Torrison, Valders Mail Carrier, Meets End Peculiarly. TONGUE SWOLLEN, CHOKES FOR AIR. Death under most perculiar circumstances and as result of the strange mishap ended the life of John Torrison a well known resident of Valders, whose demise occurred at the Holy Family hospital in this city Wednesday after he had been brought here for care by physicians called to attend him. Mr. Torrison's body has been taken to Valders for burial from the late home there on Friday. Mr. Torrison's death was caused by blood poisoning which developed from an injury only a few days ago. Mr. Torrison was employed in the United States mail delivery service, as a rural mail carrier from the Valders post office and was injured while discharging his duties as carrier. While at his work and in haste to alight from the wagon Mr. Torrison, in jumping from the wagon in some way bit his tongue, his teeth closing upon the tongue with considerable force, causing laceration of the tongue and developing a serious and painful injury. From the laceration caused by the teeth, the tongue became swollen and within a few hours, Mr. Torrison experienced intense sufferings. Physicians were summoned from this city to attend him and it was decided to remove the patient to the hospital here where he could be given constant care and attention. Efforts of physicians to relieve the suffering man and reduce the swelling of the tongue did not succeed and Wednesday morning, Mr. Torrison's condition became alarming and he died early in the day. Because of the swollen condition of the tongue it was hard for the pateint (sic) to get a sufficient supply of air for the body and death was virtually due to strangulation. Mr. Torrison was one of the best known residents of the county in the vicinity in which he made his home and his sudden and unexpected death is a shock to a large circle of friends. Mr. Torrison formerly engaged in the hotel business, having conducted a small hostelry, but later he secured an appointment as a rural mail carrier which he had held for some time. Mr. Torrison was 50 years of age and is survived by a widow, one child, a daughter aged 15. A member of the association of Manitowoc County Rural Mail Carriers and the state association, Mr. Torrison was well known in this city and throughout the county. He attended the annual picnic of the association held a week ago Sunday and had been active in the work of the association. Rural carriers of the local postoffice have arranged to visit the Torrison home at Valders with flowers as a tribute of respect to the dead man. The funeral will be held at Valders from the late home to-morrow. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Thursday, August 11, 1910 P.1
