ANNIS DANFORTH Under Interesting Items from Tribune Correspondents. Meeme. We are called upon to chronicle the sad news of the death of Mrs. Annie Danforth, wife of Wm. Danforth, after patient suffering for three years of consumption. She breathed her last on the morning of the 10th inst. About a year ago she was partially deprived of speech, conversing only in a whisper. Her sickness baffled the skill of many physicians both at home and abroad. Everything was done by her husband for her relief, but to no avail. God saw fit to call one of his children home. She lived an exemplary Christian life, and was a dutiful wife, kind mother, and esteemed and loved by all who knew her. All those intimately acquainted with her feel that they have lost a true friend who cannot be replaced in this community. The funeral services were performed on the 12th inst. by Rev. Mr. Siers, of Plymouth. The text was chosen from Revelations, 14th chap. 13th verse: "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord." His discourse impressed every one present of the necessity of being prepared to meet death. A large number of sympathizing friends were present, forming a procession seldom seen in this community. She leaves a husband and 3 children to mourn her loss. Mr. Danforth and family have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community. SALLY DANFORTH Man's unconquerable enemy, death, again, entered the Danforth family last from the toil and turmoil of this life Mrs. Danforth, who was one of the oldest residents of this place. She lived to a green old age and saw her children grown to maturity, and had the pleasure of seeing them she watched over in their childhood around her on her death bed. ELIZABETH DAVIES DIED- News of the death of Mrs. David Davis (sic) was received in our neighborhood last Saturday morning. She was making her home with her daughter, Mrs. Wm. Zorn as we mentioned in the News last week and called her by the latter’s name as it would be more familiar to the readers of the News. Two weeks before her death she was as well as could be expected but she contracted a severe cold which ended in pneumonia, the doctors being unable to relieve her suffering and she passed away, her life finishing like the burning down of a candle. She was a good Christian all her life and we can say with a true heart that God sent the Angel of Death to relieve her sufferings. She had lived here only a short time, but her kind ways and lovable disposition will forever remain in our hearts that best knew her. Neighbors and friends sympathize with the bereaved family. Mrs. Davis at the time of her demise was 80 years, 1 month and 19 days old. Previous to coming to Heathville (Clark County) she resided in the town of Meeme, Manitowoc county, where she and her husband were among the first settlers. She was the mother of 7 children and there are 14 grandchildren. The children are Mrs. Dr. Burns of Chicago, Mrs. Day of Oshkosh, Mrs. Jenkins of Omro, L. Davis of Minneapolis, Tom Davis of Omro, John Davis of Oostburg, Wis., and Mrs. Wm. Zorn. The funeral sermon was held in the farm house of Wm Zorn at 9 o’clock Monday A.M. and the following night the body was taken to Meeme, Manitowoc county, for burial. Grandma Davis, as she was familiarly called, was a woman highly respected by all who knew her, and held a place in the family circle above all. The Granton News. Manitowoc Pilot, December 24, 1908

CAROLINE C. AND NICHOLAS DITTMAR From the Files of the Pilot - Twenty-Five Years Ago (1892) Nicholas Dittmar of Meeme, died on Thursday of last week at quite an advanced age. He was one of the wealthy farmers of this county, his farm including a whole section. He was a veteran of the Mexican War and a man of interesting personality, intelligent, shrewd and withal kindhearted. He was for many years, the Treasurer of Meeme and at a time when partisan nominations for that office were made. Though a republican and the town strongly democratic, he never failed of an election, the poorer people always stood by him as he always paid their taxes and waited for their ability to reimburse him. He represented the First Assembly District some years ago, then as now, strongly democratic. The old man had a large farm house and nothing pleased him better than to have people from Manitowoc and Sheboygan visit him. His wife died the following night. She had waited on him during his sickness and on the day he died, complained of feeling ill. She retired, but feeling a little better, proceeded to do some writing but soon complained she had lost her sight. She again retired and died the following day. They were both buried on Sunday in one grave. Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs., Jan. 25, 1917 ********* (First publication June 23, 1892.) No. 51 STATE OF WISCONSIN-COUNTY COURT FOR MANITOWOC COUNTY. WILHELMINE DOBBERT Meeme Correspondence: A Woman Lives in the Woods 34 Days Without Shelter. Meeme, Nov, 10, 1874. The people of Meeme have been anxious over the account of the disappearance of Mrs. Dobert. She left her house on the 28th of September, in a fit of insanity, and has lived in the woods for thirty-four days, without shelter, and without food, except grass, roots and such things as she could pick up there. She eluded the search of her husband and neighbors, who searched the woods for two weeks. At the end of that time they discontinued the search, considering it would be useless, as she was, by that time, undoubtedly dead. On the first of November, a party of hunters found the poor woman--alive, but very weak and emaciated. She was very thinly clad. She had with her a small pail filled with grass and leaves off the trees. She said she had eaten nothing else since she had been in the woods; she had not been in any house, nor had any one seen her since she had left home. The poor woman was taken home and cared for. DAVID LLEWELYN Death of a Pioneer April 26, at the residence of J. L. Edwards, David Llewellyn, aged 88 years. Mr. Llewellyn(sic) was born in Dogmel, South Wales. He emigrated to America 28 years ago and has been a resident of Meeme 26 years, making him one of Meeme's earliest settlers. He leaves an aged companion, his senior by two years, whose mental faculties are but slightly impaired. She mourns the loss of him with whom she has journeyed down the rugged path of life for over 60 years. his children, in all four daughters, of whom three reside in Meeme, the other in British Columbia, are called to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate parent. Mr. Llewellyn early became a faithful and pious Christian. He was baptized into the fellowship of the Baptist church of his native town by the Rev. David Phillips, over 60 years ago, from that time until his death, was a faithful and consistent member, he loved the church, was constant in the peace of prayer, devoted himself to the welfare of Zion and was never weary in well doing. He was one of the founders of the Baptist church in Meeme and for many years its Deacon. He was confined to his bed for over two years in an almost helpless condition. The patience with which he bore his condition. The patience with which he bore his bodily infirmities, even with cheerfulness, calls to mind the following lines: "Blessed I who in They Bosom seeks Rest that nothing earthly breaks Dead to self and worldly things Lost in Thee thou King of Kings." The appropriate text at the funeral was found in Ps 23:4 "Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil. for though art with me, thy rod and thy staff they comfort me." The above text was ably presented by Elder Sears of Plymouth. His funeral was largely attended mainly of the aged pioneers following him to his burial. Of him, it truly can be said, he was one in whom all lost a friend and none an enemy. Another aged pilgrim Another Christian friend Has measured out his span Of four score years and ten. A faithful soldier of the cross Has drifted o'er life's troubled tide Who strove each day in faithful prayer His life alone in Christ to hide. They've gently laid him down to rest His lowly bed bedewed with tears To sleep until the glorious morn When with the Saints he shall appear. Weeping mourners dry your tears Thy aged father doth but sleep Soon life's journey will be o'er Then In heaven all will meet. Manitowoc Tribune, Thurs., May 6, 1875
