JOHN J. SHEEHY (d. 1913) John Sheehy Not Suicide as Reported It Is Said CAUGHT IN ROPE OF A HAY FORK Caught in the rope of a hay fork which he was seeking to adjust, John Sheehy, the Maple Grove man whose dead body was found in the hayloft of his barn yesterday, is believed to have met his death by accident. The fact that there was no knot in the rope which was wound about Sheehy's body several times and across which his head was hanging, dissipates the theory of suicide. It is believed that Mr. Sheehy was overcome by the heat while working to adjust the rope of the hay fork and that he may have ruptured a blood vessel in the head to cause death. The rope was wound about the man's legs, indicating that he had attempted to hold himself while seeking to ???? the rope preparatory to use in ?????. Mr. Sheehey was 57 years of age ??? is survived by a widow and five ????. He was one of the pros (remainder of paragraph unreadable.) Manitowoc Daily Herald, Wednesday, July 2, 1913 P.8 ******** Notes From Maple Grove: John Sheehy a well known resident and highly respected citizen of Maple Grove, was found dead in his barn Tuesday forenoon, his body hanging from the hay rope. Mr. Sheehy was 52 years old. He was a good neighbor, an industrious man and a prosperous farmer. He leaves a wife and five children who have the sympathy of the entire community in their terrible affliction. The funeral will be held Thursday forenoon. Manitowoc Herald Times, March 27, 1946 P. 2 ******** Notes from Maple Grove: Quite a little excitement prevailed here last Sunday when the news came that Tom Sullivan was drowned at the Branch River. But it was shortly after corrected that he was not drowned but came mightily near it. It seems that he was on his way to church and the Branch River was at high water mark from the big rains of the day and night before so the road at Brant's bridge was covered with water for 100 rods or more over 4 feet deep while the depth in the ditches was over 8 foot of water. He got in about 20 rods when himself, horse and buggy were carried off the road into the ditch. In some manner the horse and buggy were carried into a fence where the horse's head was so that it got caught in a stump that his head was over water till rescued. Tom saw a tree some 200 yards in the distance and struck out for it after getting out of his raincoat which he had on to keep his campaign suit clean from the mud. So as luck would have it, he reached the tree and climbed up onto its branches and just as he got up and stooped over to rest himself on the limb, his pocket book dropped out of his vest pocket and away she went. Some say there were $100 in it, more say $300. So he was in the tree over an hour before he could get anyone to hear him "hollering" as the closest house was over one-fourth mile away. At last John Daley heard him and telephoned to Menchalvile. There a crew of men set out for the river. They made a raft and Joe Schultz (Automobile Joe), Billie Stedel and Charlie Kocian went as the rescue crew and it was very difficult to reach the tree on account of the strong current. But at last they got him on dry land. Some 35 years ago, Sullivan saved a young man and lady at very near the same place from drowning but the horses were lost. That was in the spring flood in the latter part of March. And when he was Chairman of Franklin, he was ? To remedy this flooding there and spent about $10,000 in building bridge and raising the road for one-half mile to about 4 to 6 feet high, but it seems it was to no avail and that $10,000 expended is gone down river with his own pocket book but what of that when his life was saved. JEREMIAH TOOMEY Jerry Toomey, who lives on the corner of 6th and Franklin Streets, suffered a stroke Sunday and has lost his power of speech. His condition is critical. Der Nord Westen, 10 Dec. 1908 ********* Scores of men in the city, aged from 40 downward, who years ago experienced many times the joy of a “hitch” on the flour and feedwagon or sleigh of the ever genial, boy-loving Jere Toomey, will learn with intense regreat that he is suffering from a paralytic stroke at his home. His condition is critical. The Manitowoc Pilot, December 10, 1908. ******** Failing to rally from a paralytic stroke suffered a few weeks ago, Jeremiah Toomey, familiarly known as “Jerry” to his army of friends, passed away Tuesday. He was born in County Cork, Ireland, 71 years ago, coming to America at the age of 19, and after a short period of residence in Boston and Buffalo came to Manitowoc county where he has since lived. The funeral is being held today to St. Patrick’s cemetery at Maple Grove. Besides the widow, Mr. Toomey leaves surviving three sons, Dan and Jerry of this city and John of Brillion, and two daughters, Mrs. John Runge and Mrs. Thos. Hamnot, both of Chicago. Mr. Toomey’s death caused intense and sincere regret to all of his wide circle of acquaintances. All his days he radiated sunshine. By the nature of the vocation he followed for many years, he came into daily contact with all classes of people and his uniform good cheer and joviality made a life-long friend of every one he met. Possessed of the traditional Irish wit untinctured with even a trace of sting he brushed aside the petty cares that sometimes embitter life. For twenty years there was not a boy on the streets who was not a firm friend of Jerry’s, a testimonial of character that cannot be outdone. He never to the last wavered in his fidelity to the old Irish customs, such as attendance at the house of death. A devout Christian he lived a fuller and completer life than many who have grander pretensions. The Manitowoc Pilot, December 24, 1908 ********* Death here Tuesday, at age 71, of express driver Jerry Toomey. The deceased was employed here since 1871. He leaves a wife and 5 children. The funeral will be held today in Maple Grove. From Der Nord Westen, 24 Dec. 1908

DANIEL WATT Thurs. last week Daniel Watt, an old resident of Town Maple Grove, committed suicide by hanging. The deceased was about 70 and had never married. He had about $400 in his pocket. Der Nord Westen, 17 Aug. 1899 ****** SUICIDE IN MAPLE GROVE Yesterday morning Mr. Dan Watt, a prominent citizen of Maple Grove was found suspended to a fence, apparently strangled to death. It is supposed that it is a case of suicide. The old man, who was about 70 years of age, has been despondent for some time, money affairs having caused him considerable trouble. He leaves no family to inherit his wealth, he never having been married. He was deeply religious and feeling himself a burden to his friends and relatives he undoubtedly determined to remove himself. Brillion News, Fri., Aug. 11, 1899 ****** Daniel Watts (sic), an old resident of Maple Grove committed suicide on Wednesday of last week. The body was not discovered until the following morning. A light rope had been fastened by the old man about his neck and then attached to an old corn marker which was leaning against a fence. When found, only the head and neck were supported by the rope, the rest of the body resting on the ground. Death probably resulted from strangling. The appearance of the corpse indicated a struggle before death came. The old man was a rather eccentric character and was always considered a little "simple" by his friends. He had considerable money, the possession and deposition of which seemed to worry him of late. When the body was found a large sum of money was discovered, concealed in his clothes. He was quite old and the mental infirmity which in his younger days made him rather odd, grew with age into a virtual insanity. This was generally recognized by his friends yet no one thought he contemplated so tragic an end, nor did he ever intimate such was his intention. "Old Dan' was known by all who attend Maple Grove church. He had a great fondness for children and the little ones, awed at first by his eccentric ways, soon learned to know him as a friend. He had no family, living for long periods with different persons. One of his peculiarities was to consider and speak of everything belonging to the family with whom he stopped as "mine" and he took an interest in it befitting the legitimate possessor. He was religious and attended strictly to his church duties. The funeral took place at Maple Grove on Friday. Our pastor's decision on the question of interment, we believe meets the unanimous approval of those who knew the mental condition of the deceased. Manitowoc Pilot, August 17, 1899 P. 7

MARGERET WATT (d. 1901) Deaths of a Week: The young daughter of Michael Watts in the town of Gibson died on Sunday. She was buried in Maple Grove. Manitowoc Pilot, Wis., Thursday, April 25, 1901 pg. 1 ***** Maple Grove: Again we find that death has found its way into our midst; taking for its victim the infant daughter and only child of Mr. and Mrs. Mick Watt, who died Monday morning, after a short illness. This is the third time that death has visited this family in a similar manner. Two former children dying in infancy also. Herein we see one of life's darkest pages opened up before us; where wenth in all its innocence and purity, at the sound of death's unwarning cry the only child of a fond and living father and mother passes from their grasp into the hands of its maker, leaving in their hearts a vacancy which can never be tilled nor time efface. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the parents in their sad bereavement. Manitowoc Pilot, Wis., Thursday, April 25, 1901 pg. 8 ***** Grimms News: BABY WATT At dawn on April the 22nd the angel of death entered the home of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Watt to take from their loving grasp their little daughter Margeret(sic) in the bloom of her early childhood, and the pride and comfort of their home. Such a quaint golden-curled little darling; Lying there in her snowy white bed. As the sinking sun smiles upon her And the gentle breeze toys ‘round her head. The red sun disappears o’er the hill tops, And the gentle breeze sinks down to rest, As the dark, noiseless shadows of evening Slip stealthily in from the West. But she notes not the gathering twilight, For the wee darling’s senses are dumb She is threading the mazes of dreamland “Waiting for papa and mamma to come.” Such a wan, fever-parched little darling Lying there ‘neath the coverlet white. As the pale moon peeps in at the window, And the wind softly whispers, “Tis night.” Ah! The sweet face is haggard and pale-drawn, The dear hands are helpless and numb; She is fading away like a sunbeam “Waiting for papa and mamma to come.” On the bank of that beautiful river, Where the pure ones of earth find a rest, Here the palm branches nestle and quiver, Gently stirred by the songs of the blest. Knowing taught of earth’s suffering and sorrow. Hearing naught of earth’s din, harsh and grim. There our dear angel darling is “Waiting for papa and mamma to come.” The Manitowoc Pilot, May 2, 1901 ********* In same paper: The funeral of Mr. and Mrs. Watt’s child was well attended, nearly 100 carriages being in line. SARAH WATT (d. 1895) From the Files of the Pilot - Twenty-Five Years Ago - (1895) Mrs. Thos. Watt of Maple Grove died on Tuesday of this week. She was the mother of John P. Watt, the merchant of this place. The funeral takes place today. Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs., Sept. 2, 1920 ******** Mention of Mrs. Watt’s death was made in the issue of the 5th inst. An obituary notice was received this week which is published below in part: Mrs. Watt was born in Clare county, Ireland, in 1815, and she came to this country in 1846. In company with her husband she came to Maple Grove in 1849. She was one of the first white women who settled in that locality. She had in the early days many opportunities of rendering assistance to her less fortunate neighbors. Whether their needs were the substantial means of keeping hunger away, or the advice of a true friend or the consoling hand and voice of a true Christian woman, she was never appealed to in vain. The deceased was a most devoted member of the Catholic church. So solicitous was she of the spiritual welfare of herself and her neighbors that before the Catholic congregation of Maple Grove was established, she frequently invited missionaries to her then humble home that she and her neighbors might have an opportunity of attending at the celebration of the mass. She died as she had lived, a true follower of Christ. Her funeral brought together the largest concourse of people that ever assembled at Maple Grove on a like occasion. DANIEL WELCH 16 Months Old Child Killed Near Grimms Daniel Welch Is Fatally Hurt When Run Over By Milk Truck Daniel Welch, 16 month old son of Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Welch, was killed instantly at 9:45 am today at the home of his parents, on half mile south of Grimms, when he was run over by a milk truck driven by Norman Reach, 18, of Reedsville. The child apparently wandered in front of the truck while it was loading milk alongside the barn and was run over by the right front wheel when the truck started to leave. The child's body was found by the father, who was working on a tractor nearby, after the truck was out of the yard. Driver Unaware Of Mishap Reach did not know that the truck he was driving had killed the child until he was contacted by the authorities at the White House Milk plant in this city shortly after 10:15 am. Dr. Theodore Teligen, county coroner, said the child's head and body were crushed by the right front wheel of the truck. He said early this afternoon that he had not yet conferred with District Attorney John Danielson but he added that he thought there would not be an inquest. The body was taken to the Watt funeral home in Maple Grove where it may be viewed tonight and funeral services will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Maple Grove on Thursday at 9 am. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Reach told Sheriff Elmer Bergner that he stopped at the Welch home with the milk truck owned by Mrs. Henry Sheahan, Maple Grove, backed the truck up to the barn, which is about 50 feet from the house and talked to the father of the child for a few minutes. He then loaded four cans of milk on the truck from the left, jumped into the cab and drove away. Blood On Wheel The right front wheel of the truck was found to have blood on it and there was a little on the right rear wheel, but authorities believed that only the front wheel passed over the child. "I never saw the child while I was at the Welch home this morning," Reach told the sheriff, "I had seen him on one or two other occasions when he was with his mother." The Welch home is about a half mile south of the old quarry at Grimms. The house and the barn are about the same distance from the road and the barn is about 50 feet north of the house. Sheriff Elmer Bergner said. The truck backed up a slight incline to the barn. The father was working on a tractor some distance behind the truck. Sheriff Bergner and County Traffic Officer Henry Pleuss rushed to the scene of the mishap as soon as they were informed of it and found Coroner Theodore Teitgen already there. Daniel was the only child of the Welches. Manitowoc Herald-Times; Wednesday 2 Sept 1942; p. 2, c. 1 (Sent in by a researcher/See contributors pg.)

EDMUND WELCH and ROSE ANN WELCH TRACTOR TIPS KILLING FARMER, HIS DAUGHTER Weekend traffic accidents in Manitowoc County killed three persons, including a father and his daughter. The latest fatalities brought the county's 1966 total to nine persons or three times as many as a year ago at this time. The county did not record its ninth road death last year until Oct 1. Edmund T. Welch, 47, of Rt. 2, Reedsville, and his 14 year old daughter, Rose Ann were killed around 1:30 pm Sunday in a tractor accident near the family farm. Welch and his daughter died of crushing injuries to the chest and abdominal area. A son, Michael, 9, who was also riding on the tractor, received crushing injuries to both legs and the lower abdomen. He was reported in satisfactory condition Monday at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Crossed Lanes According to authorities, Welch had delivered a load of feed for livestock in a nearby field and was returning to the home farm when the accident occurred. The tractor was pulling a manure spreader but it broke away as the tractor overturned. Police said the tractor had been southbound and crossed into the left lane for some unknown reason. It continued into the left ditch and rolled down a steep embankment, pinning the three occupants. Two wreckers were required to lift the tractor so that the bodies could be freed. Michael Welch was reported to have been seriously hurt in another farm accident some months ago. THOMAS S. WELCH Thomas S. Welch Sr. Dies in Fire Pioneer Farm Owner Victim Of Barn Fire Huge Barn Destroyed On His Farm Near Grimms; His Body Is Recovered Thomas S. Welch, Sr., 78, prominent Cato farmer, was burned to death last night when overcome by smoke and flames which destroyed the huge barn on his farm one half mile south of Grimms. All of the livestock which Welch attempted to liberate from the burning building were destroyed. Welch's charred body was found at 6 am today by searchers after the ruins had cooled sufficiently to allow them to penetrate the barn basement. The fire swept throught the big barn on the Welch farm, razing it to the ground and destroying all the livestock, farm machinery, feed and grain with a loss of from $18,000 to $20,000 partly covered by insurance. Fire departments from Reedsville and Whitelaw worked most of the night in preventing the fire from spreading to other buildings and the residence on the farm. Was Overcome Origin of the fire was not determined. Members of the Welch household looked out of the residence windows at 9 pm to see smoke and flames leaving from the barn. Welch and his hired man, John Peppard, hastened out in an effort to liberate the cattle and horses. While Peppard entered one part of the barn, Welch pushed his way through the smoke at another entrance to reach the stanchions where the 17 head of cattle were tied. He did succeed in releasing two or three animals before he was overcome and sank to the floor. In a few moments Peppard missed Welch and retraced his steps to try and rescue him. But by that time the flames had gained such headway that he was unable to enter the part of the barn where Mr. Welch had pushed his way in in his effort to free the bellowing cattle. Called Trucks Telephone messages by this time summoned the fire trucks from Reedsville and Whitelaw, and scores of farmers battles through bad roads and downpour of rain to reach the Welch farm and assist in confining the fire to the big barn. Nothing was saved from the barn. The loss included 17 head of cattle, five horses, all the farm machinery and quantities of hay, straw and grain. The barn was modern in construction. Sheriff Herman Schuette was summoned to the fire at an early hour this morning when search failed to locate the body of Mr. Welch. He reached the scene just after searchers located the body in front of the cow stanchions. There will be no inquest. Was Pioneer Thomas Welch Sr., was one of the pioneer farmers of the town of Cato.
