arrived in US via New York in July of 1861
operated the linseed mill in the Bull Pen
“My mother used to make me deliver a loaf of bread to Alte Ole (Old Oiler) who lived up the street and got his name
because he made linseed oil.
He seemed like a giant to me; his features were grotesque and he had a very large nose.
He was always cooking herbs to make a black salve for his nose; later we found out he had cancer.
The mill where he made the linseed oil was down the hill in what was called the Bull’s pen; the foundations are still there.
In those days it used to cost $4.00 to make a gallon of good linseed oil.
Alte Ole had been married at one time and he had a number of children.
He and his wife did not get along. One morning as she took the cows to pasture, she kept looking back toward the mill.
Suddenly it was all aflame. People said she had lit it. She left soon for Chicago.”
