EMELIE W. WEINERT SUDDEN DEATH OF MRS. WEINERT IS GREAT SHOCK Mrs. Amelea (sic) Windish Weinert, widow of the late John Weinert, died suddenly at the family home, 719 Washington street, at 2 o’clock Sunday morning following a stroke of apoplexy which she had suffered a half hour before. The death came unexpectedly, and was a great shock to members of the family and to a large circle of friends. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon from the home and burial will be at Evergreen. The services will be in charge of the Rev. N. A. Winger. Mrs. Weinert was about as usual Saturday and seemed to be in unusually good health and spirits. Saturday evening, however, she was restless and when her son, Harvey, returned home at midnight he found his mother reading. He asked whether she was ill but the response was in the negative and he then asked her to go to bed, a request which she complied with only to arise again shortly after 2 o’clock. Her movements about the house awoke the daughter, Miss Emma, who asked whether there was trouble but again a negative response reassured them. At 2:30, the daughter, who had remained awake heard a cry from the dining room and when she rushed in she found her mother sitting in a rocking chair, the victim of a stroke which resulted in her death less than a half hour later. Members of the family at home were called and the service of Dr. Luhman secured but Mrs. Weinert was beyond human aid and passed away shortly before 3 o’clock. The life story of Mrs. Weinert is one of a home woman who worked hard, faithfully and unceasingly for her family. Born in Muensterburg, Sa___ ia, April 3, 1862, she was married there to John Weinert and then after she had inherited a large fortune decided with the husband and family of four children, Emma, Susan, Fred and Hans, to come to America to make a new home. The family settled at Sheboygan in 1892 and engaged in business but unfamiliarity with American methods resulted in the loss of their fortune and the family moved to Kewaunee in 1895. Here they made a new start and decided that larger opportunities could be found at Milwaukee. Enroute to Milwaukee they visited here and Mrs. Weinert was persuaded by local friends to engage in the baker business on South Tenth street in 1889. He made a success, later establishing a wholesale business and noodle factory, much of the success due to the co-operation of his wife who was highly educated and was a real partner in the business. Mr. Weinert died three years ago. Surviving Mrs. Weinert are four sons, Fred, Hans and Harvey of this city, Siegfried of Janesville and two daughters, Emma and Susan, also of this city and one brother, the Rev. George Windish of Deaconsfield, near Kimberly, South Africa. Manitowoc Herald News, October 8, 1923 ******* [bur 10-10-1923/cause: apoplexy]

The summons to Weinert was made through the German Consul at Chicago and was received here Wednesday. Weinert came here with his parents when but five years of age and the record of his birth being possessed there, he is considered as a subject of the emperor. Weinert has neglected to have a record of his naturalization in the U.S. recorded in Germany and this accounts for the summons which he has now received. He will probably be excused from service as soon as the authorities are advised that he is a citizen here. In event that Weinert had not secured his papers, he would have been liable to arrest for failure to return on the summons issued. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Thurs., Feb. 28, 1907

JOHN F. WEINERT JOHN WEINERT IS DEAD AFTER AN OPERATION John Fredrick Weinert passed away at his home 719 Washington street, shortly after nine o'clock last evening. Mr. Weinert had been operated upon at a Chicago hospital last April for an ulcer on the stomach. He was apparently fully recovering after the ordeal and his death last evening came as a shock to his family as he had been up and around only half an hour before. A sudden hemorrhage followed by his lapsing into a state of coma, preceded the final sleep from which there is no waking. Last Sunday he had been out nearly all day calling on friends and also attended the christening of a little grandson. He slept soundly that night and woke yesterday morning refreshed and apparently in the best of spirits. Mr. Weinert was born in Silesia, Germany, May 19, 1862, learned the baker's trade which he continued up to the time of his death. He was married there and came to this country in 1892, making his home at Sheboygan. Later he removed to Kewaunee where he remained until 1899 when he came to this city and has resided here ever since. He was well read and took great interest in public affairs. Besides his wife he leaves six children to mourn his loss. Four sons-Fred, Hans, Harvey and Seigfried and two daughters, Emma and Susan. A brother and two sisters in Sheboygan also survive. Funeral arrangements will be determined upon later. The death of Mr. Weinert removes one of the best known figures of Manitowoc business life. He was identified with early day history and was very well known in this and surrounding community. Many friends will extend sympathy to the bereaved family. Manitowoc Herald News, Manitowoc, Wis. ALVIN W. [ED.(ALVINA W.) WEINSCHENK (d. 1869) SAD.--The most stricken family in our Village now is certainly that or our esteemed fellow citizen Professor Weinschenk. But a few weeks ago his bright and intelligent children were in the full enjoyment of health, when they were suddenly taken down, one after another, with diphtheria and scarlet fever, and three of them died within one week, while another was thought to be on the point of death, and two more confined to beds of severe sickness. Through the timely and untiring exertions of Doctors Simon and Schaller hopes are entertained that all the children now sick will recover, and the afflicted parents be spared the pain of further losses of their dearest treasurers. We need hardly assure the bereaved parents of our most heartfelt sympathy. Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs., Dec. 12, 1918 ********** From the Files of the Pilot - Forty-nine Years ago - (1869) Last week we made mention of the sad experience of Mr. Weinschenk, he having lost three children in one week by scarlet fever, who has again been afflicted, his oldest son, the last one expiring on Friday last a victim of the same ravaging disease. Surely such an overwhelming succession of losses seems almost too much to bear and we are sure that all our citizens sympathize with the bereaved parents in their great sorrow. The deceased being a member of the band, his funeral was attended by both, and also a large procession of sympathizing friends. Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs, Dec. 26, 1918 ******** Acknowledgment Doctor Easton will please accept our heartfelt thanks for the very kind present made to us as a Christmas gift on the 25th of Dec. last, by sending his bill against us for medical services, receipted in full. And also for the constant care and attention which he devoted to our deceased children during their last sickness. At the same time we cannot help declaring, that Dr. Easton is entirely mistaken, when he states in THE PILOT that our first boy who died would have recovered, had he not arisen from his bed, when no one was present, and going into a cold, uncarpeted room, barefooted and unclad except his night dress, which threw him into a relapse. We must state, that the boy never during his sickness was left alone, that he left his bed Saturday morning before he was seriously sick, but not the room as Mrs. W. saw Lim from the kitchen and directly put Lim to bed again. Dr. Easton never said a word about a relapse, but on the contrary he found the boy better on Sunday morning; in the night from Sunday to Monday the boy was very sick, but in the morning he declared him better; at noon he said the respiratory organs were affected; in the evening the boy was dead. It is very painful for us to have to make this statement, but still it is more painful to be charged publicly with negligence during the severe late trials with our children. None but parents who have met the losses similar to ours, can truly apreciate(sic) our feelings. As we cannot read the paper in English, we knew nothing of Dr. Easton's communications until last week, which is the reason of answering the same at so late a date. Ed. Weinschenk and Wife (the next part, same paper, next column) Dr. Easton came to our house on the 27th day of December and declared that Drs. Sisline? & Schallern, is no article in The Pilot, tried to break down his reputation. Stricken as we were, we were ready to do good to anybody, and not being acquainted with the former articles, we signed a paper presented to us by Dr. Easton without, at that time, thinking of any wrong by doing so. Now, after the article in THE PILOT has been translated to us, we find that our declaration has partly been misinterpreted into English, and that we have to modify, after careful consideration, several of our statements. We therefore declare, 1st: That Dr. R., who denies having treated our third child, did cut its gums and ordered cold applications on the head, saying that the cramps were the consequence of teething, medicine could not be taken by the child, being in cramps. 2d: That I went for Dr. Simon without the knowledge of Dr. Easton, although it had been mentioned before that another physician ought to be consulted. 3d: That we did not see Dr. E. at one o'clock of said day; that at that time we were trying to sleep, being exhausted completely by excitement and sorrow, and that we signed that statement only in consequence of the testimony of our servant girl. In regard to his last declaration, we had sent for him in the morning, but never afterwards asked him to call again. If there are any contradictions in our statements, they must be charged to the state of our body and mind, which parents will appreciate when they take in consideration that we had just lost four children, and were still in imminent danger of losing our last one. CARMEN WEINSCHENK South Side Girl Stricken While She Planned For Wedding, Yields to Grim Destroyer—Death is Pathetic Death was victor last night in an unequal struggle which had been waged for more than a year by Miss Carmen Weinschenk, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Weinschenk, and at 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon she yielded in the fight, vanquished by the Grim Destroyer. Miss Weinschenk had been confined to her home for many months. Miss Weinschenk’s death is pathetically sad. But twenty-three years of age, having been born September 14, 1890, Miss Weinschenk was a promised bride and at the time she was stricken by illness which claimed her life, she was planning for her marriage which was to have taken place this summer. Miss Weinschenk was to have been wedded to Lawrence Horstman, a former Manitowoc boy, who is now located at New York where he is employed in the offices of the Aluminum Mfg. company. Owing to the illness of Miss Weinschenk the marriage was deferred and death finally stepped in to prevent its culmination. Miss Weinschenk was a graduate of the South Side high school and of the Wisconsin Business college and later was employed in the offices of Franz, Kadow & Schmitz company. For some time she made her home at Milwaukee and returned here several months ago after having been stricken with the illness which caused her death. She was a talented young lady, possessed of beauty of mind and person and her death is sad. Besides her parents Miss Weinschenk is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Charles Schaefer, Milwaukee, and Miss Mae Weinschenk of this city. EDWARD WEINSCHENK (d. 1933) Edward Weinschenk, 77, Dies at Home Friday BARBER AT ONE LOCATION HERE LAST 60 YEARS (photo) Marine Band And The Freier Saengerbund Will Assist At Funeral Tuesday Edward Weinschenk, 77, who operated a barber shop for nearly 60 years at the same location, 910 Washington street, died suddenly Friday night less than an hour after he returned to his home, 1217 South Seventh street. He was stricken with a heart attack. In the death of Mr. Weinschenk, the oldest active barber in Manitowoc is removed from a community in which he grew up and, except for a few years spent in Milwaukee, lived his entire life. He and Mrs. Weinschenk in August observed the 55th anniversary of their marriage. In addition to his barbering the deceased was also musically inclined and was one of the oldest members of the Aluminum Goods Marine band in which he played the bass drum for close to 40 (photo) years. He was also a charter member of the Freier Saengerbund singing society and two years ago was honored with a 50-year pin from that organization. At Chair Friday Although not in the best of health for the last few months, Mr. Weinschenk was able to continue in charge of his barber shop. He was at his chair as usual on Friday and remained until nearly 9 p.m. before locking up and walking to his home in the First ward. On reaching the house he turned on the radio, spoke cheeringly to his bird and the family dog, and sat down to read the evening newspaper. Shortly before 10 o'clock Mr. Weinschenk went to his room where he was taken with a heart attack. He was able to walk downstairs to procure a potion of medicine, but on returning to his bedroom collapsed on the bed. Before Mrs. Weinschenk could summon a physician he was dead. Born in City Born in Manitowoc 77 years ago the deceased, when a boy of ten years, accompanied his parents to Milwaukee, where the family resided for a few years. Finishing a brief schooling there Mr. Weinschenk took up the barber trade and came back to Manitowoc to open a shop on Washington street. Here he continued to ply his trade. He also found time to turn to music. He enrolled as a drummer in one of the early day bands of Manitowoc, which was conducted by his uncle, Edward Weinschenk. Then the Marine band under the leadership of the late Prof. Frank Moser was formed here and he became a member. When the band came under the direction of Emil Sohrweide the deceased still retained his interest and continued as a member. Not until 10 years ago did Mr. Weinschenk give up active participation in the band affairs. He also enrolled over 50 years ago as a member of the Freier Saengerbund singing society, one of the early day German singing groups in Manitowoc. Even in the late years he continued active with this organization. Married Ida Hay On August 26, 1878, he was married to Miss Ida Hay in this city. They took up their residence here and continually resided in the First ward. Five years ago, on the occasion of their golden wedding, Mr. and Mrs. Weinschenk were given a joint serenade by the A.G.M. Marine band and the Freier Saengerbund singing society. Survivors are the widow, two daughters, Mrs. Charles Schaefer and Miss Mae Weinschenk, Milwaukee, a brother Charles, Chicago, and a sister, Mrs. Matilda Noel of Milwaukee. In addition to membership in the two musical organizations Mr. Weinschenk was a charter member of the local barbers union, and also a member of the Royal League and the Moose lodge. Funeral services, in charge of the Rev. O.A. Menke, will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Vogelsang funeral home on South Eighth street, with interment at Evergreen cemetery. Member of the A.G.M. EMMA WEINSCHENK (d. This tune, as we have said before was played by the Union and Cornet bands, as it followed the hearse, which was conveying to the graveyard, the fourth child of Mr. Weinschenk's. The Odd Fellows and Sons of Herman were also in the procession. It is with deep regret that we take up our pen to chronicle such sad events, almost in each consecutive issues. Surely such an overwhelming succession of losses seems almost too much to bear and we are sure that all our citizens sympathize with the bereaved parents in their great sorrow. CARL P. WELLNER Bachelor Found Dead in Room A 45 year old Manitowoc bachelor and World War II veteran, Carl Peter Wellner, was found dead by police in his small one room home on Spring street early Thursday night. Coroner Theodore Teitgen attributed death to a heart attack. It is believed Wellner had been dead for about three days when found. Officers Paul Dahlgren and Joseph Michal were sent to investigate when Richard Hoffman, owner of the White House Lunch at 1865 Spring street and the structure in which Wellner made his home, called police headquarters. Hoffman told the officers that Wellner had not been seen for three days, the last time being in the restaurant. The light was on in the structure, Hoffman continued, but the doors were locked and the blinds drawn. He explained that Wellner sometimes left the light burning to keep the place warm. The officers used a crow bar to open a door and found Wellner dead on the floor. Coroner Teitgen and Det. Lt. Elmer Scherer were then called. GEORGE WELLNER (d. 1900) From the Files of the Pilot – Twenty-Five Year Ago – (1900) George Wellner of Branch, drowned Tuesday evening in the Manitowoc River. He was riding a bicycle. The Main Street bridge had just swung open to allow a vessel to pass and he rode off. He was unable to swim. His parents reside on a farm. Wellner was 22 years old. Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs., Aug. 20, 1925 ********* CYCLIST RIDES INTO OPEN DRAW George Willner of Branch is Drowned in the Manitowoc River Manitowoc, Wis. Aug. 22 (Special) George Willner of Branch, this county, was accidentally drowned last night in the Manitowoc River. He was riding on his wheel northward on South Main Street. The Main Street bridge had just swung open to allow a vessel to pass. Though all the lamps were lighted at the time, the young man did not seem to notice the open draw and rode off the street into the river. Three cries for help were distinctly heard, but before assistance could be rendered he had disappeared. The body was recovered two hours later. Willner's upper lip was considerably bruised and it is thought that in falling he must have struck the abutment of the bridge which together with the sudden shock, rendered him helpless. Considerable difficulty was experienced in identifying the body, because of disfiguration of the face. Willner was 23 years of age, unmarried and had been employed at the Manitowoc County insane asylum. John Johnson was standing near the bridge and says he called to Wellner to stop but the young man seemed not to hear him. He tried to get the lifeline but it was nailed to the railing and he could not get it loose in time to save the drowning man. GEORGE WELLNER (d. 1908) Suicide Tuesday morning of George Wuellner(sic) at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Julius Schultze on the corner of Wollmer and 27th Streets. (Detailed account of his self-destruction by gunshot.) He was 55 years old.(sic) Der Nord Westen, 30 Apr. 1908 ******* ENDS LIFE WITH SHOT GUN. George Wuellner (sic) residing just west of the city limits committed suicide by shooting, early Tuesday morning. The weapon used was a shot gun. Wuellner who has for some time past been making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Schultz, has on several occassions threatened to end his life. Sickness and despondency caused by the death of his wife which occurred a few years ago are given as reasons for his act. Deceased was about 55 years of age and was in comfortable circumstances financially. A family of five children survive. Manitowoc Pilot, Thursday, April 30, 1908 P. 1 ******* SHOUTS GOOD BYE, THEN ENDS LIFE George Wellner, Cries Farewell to Daughter, Turns Gun on Self and is Suicide OFTEN THREATENED ACT West Side Man of 64 Fires Fatal Shot While Still in Bed - Despondency and Drink Was the Cause of Rash Act Shouting a farewell to his daughter who was in another room, George Wellner, a West side resident while still in bed at his home, Twenty-Sixth and Wolmer Streets, early today fired the contents of a shot gun into his body and was a suicide, death resulting in a few seconds. Wellner's act was prompted by despondency over financial matters and fulfilled threats which he had made on several occasions in the past. The dead man was past 60 years of age and had been a resident of the city for years. Wellner used a single barrel shot gun to accomplish his purpose, the charge from the weapon entering the breast, tearing a large hole in the body and striking the heart. Members of the family who rushed into the room when the shot was heard found the man in death agony and he expired without being able to utter a word. District Attorney Kelley was summoned and after hearing the statements of members of the family, decided that an inquest was unnecessary. Wellner will be buried from the late home, which is occupied by his son-in-law, Julius Schultz with whom he resided. Members of the household were about early this morning owning to preparations for departure of a relative who had been visiting in the family and Wellner was one of the first to rise. He occupied a room on the second floor and after coming downstairs, had returned to his room at 6:20. A few minutes later, the daughter, Mrs. Schultz, called to him. Wellner replied by saying he did not intend to get up again and then shouted "Good bye Mary" and fired the fatal shot. Wellner, at hone(sic) time, was possessed of considerable property and at his death owned a home on Wollmer Street. Of late years, he had been addicted to drink and it is said that family trouble resulted because of this. Mrs. Wellner died two years ago and a family of five children survives the suicide. Wellner returned home Monday night under influence of liquor and suffered a serious attack during the night and this may have had something to do with this act. Wellner had been employed about the city in various capacities and was for a time a driver for a livery. The Wellner suicide is the second in the Fifth Ward in three months. GEORGE WELLS EXTRA! BOY SWIMMER LOSES LIFE IN RIVER TODAY George Wells, 14, First Drowning Victim of the Summer This Afternoon George Wells, 14 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Christ Wells, 532 North Tenth sttreet, is Manitowoc's first drowning victim of the summer season, the boy losing his life in the river at the spot known as the "Rand swimming hole" near the long overhead bridge of the Northwestern line to Green Bay at the west city limits. He was drowned shortly before 3 o'clock this afternoon. Although efforts were being made to resuscitate the boy, who was taken from the river fifteen minutes after he had gone down, it is feared the hope is futile. Carried Under by Current The boy, with his brother Arthur, and another boy, Andrew Miller had visited the river and with some dozen other youngsters were in the water when young Wells was caught by the strong current and carried under. The imperiled boy sought to cling to Miller but the latter escaped his grasp and Wells was carried under by the current. After the boy was taken from the river by other swimmers, firemen were called in an effort to resuscitate but up to the hour of going to press had been unsuccessful. Graduated This Month George was to be 14 years of age in August of this year and has four brothers, Walter, Emil and William. He graduated from the eighth grade of the Lutheran school here early this month and was to have entered high school this fall. He was picked out of the river by Ed. Woods, a city foreman who with three others was at the spot seeking the boy. He was in about four and one-half feet of water. JOHN WELLS LIFE IS CRUSHED OUT BY ENGINE John Wells Instantly Killed in Accident at Antigo Switch Yards WELL KNOWN IN CITY Under Engine When Train of Cars is Backed Onto Siding - Wheels Pass Over Body - Visited Here Sunday Crushed to death under the wheels of his own engine, which, a few minutes before he was to start out on his regular run for the day, needed some slight repairs which he was prepared to make, crawling underneath it for that purpose was the sad end that came to John Wells of Antigo, who is widely known in this community at an early hour this morning. Mr. Wells who was the engineer was busily engaged under the engine when a few freight cars released onto siding bumped into the engine, sending the wheels over the prostrate body of the engineer and crushing out his life. News of the fatality was received here by Bjron Sonsthagen, a brother-in-law whom the decedent visited only on Saturday and Sunday of the present week and because of this visit the shock to Mr. Sonsthagen was all the more keenly felt. The two spent the days visiting old time friends in this city and Two Rivers and there was no presentiment of the terrible death that was to snuff out one of their lives. The decedent who was but 36 year of age is survived by a widow, formerly Miss Valberg Sonsthagen of this city and two children, Mildred, aged seven and Robert, aged four. The death of Mr.Wells was primarily the result of carelessness on the part of the switching crew that "kicked off" a train of cars on the siding on which the engineer's engine was standing. The unfortunate man deemed it perfectly safe to venture underneath the engine and it is probable that his fireman was not present to guard him from any circumstances such as caused his death. Mr. Well's train was ready to start out on the run to Heineman, a branch of the Chicago Northwestern five miles from Antigo, when some slight defect in the mechanism of the engine called his attention and he crawled under the ponderous machine from which he was taken a corpse a few minutes later. The accident, while not seen by anyone was discovered immediately after it occurred and as soon as the body could be taken from underneath the engine an effort was made at resuscitation. Though he was not dead, the victim never again uttered a word and passed away before a physician, who was summoned could arrive on the scene. The body was removed to the home and the shock to the family made as light as possible though the widow is prostrated with grief. The death of John Wells will bring profound sorrow to a host of friends in this city and Antigo where he was respected as a good citizen, kind husband, indulgent father and a faithful friend. Among the trainmen, there will be universal regret for no more popular engineer ever opened the throttle on an engine of the division than he. He had been in the railroad business for many years and his father before him was at one time, the master mechanic of the north end division then known as the Antigo division. In this city, the news of the death is a particularly sad event for the Sonsthagen family which in the past year has had its share of affliction. No arrangements have as yet been made for the funeral but it is expected that it will be held on Saturday or Sunday when a number from this city will attend and pay their last tribute. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Apr. 25, 1907 page 1 *********** TO BE BURIED HERE Remains of Late John Wells to Be Interred at Evergreen Remains of the late John Wells of Antigo, who met an untimely death there on Thursday, will be interred to this city, the body being brought here on Saturday afternoon and the funeral will be conducted from the home of Mrs. Otto Sonsthagen on Sunday afternoon at 2 oclock to Evergreen. The services will be in charge of the Masons of which the decedent was a member. The unfortunate man was dead when taken from the track and his death must have been a terrible one. The wheels passed over the body at a point near the middle of the back and the bones were crushed and the body a shapeless mass. A coroner's inquest was called and it is reported at Antigo that someone may be responsible for carelessness for the death. He was under his engine engaged in oiling, when a switch engine backed into his engine, the result being that Wells's engine was started and the unfortunate engineer was crushed to death and terribly mangled. Wells was formerly a resident of this city. He came here with his parents from Milwaukee in his boyhood. He was married in Manitowoc in 1894 to Miss Sonsthagen, this city. The couple resided here for several years and then removed to Antigo, where they had since resided. He is survived by his wife, one son and one daughter. B. Under the humane management of Supt. Drews the patients are made as comfortable as possible under the circumstances. The systematic running of the farm furnishes an abundance of meat and vegetables, enough and to spare. To Mrs. Drews, the matron, praise is due for the efficient care of the kitchen and the preparation of plenty of plain but nourishing food. The many years of service the attendants have been employed testifies to their efficiency and trustworthiness in the care of the unfortunates. And lastly too much praise can not be bestowed to the trustees for the painstaking manner of the performance devolving upon them. For these various reasons our county asylum is ever acknowledged as one of the best in the state. Respectfully submitted. Louis Falge, M.D. Upon motion of Mr. Gennrich, the report was adopted unanimously upon roll call.
