ADOLPH VOLLENDORF (d. 1928) DEATH, AS UMPIRE, CALLS “JIM” OUT STAR BASEBALL PLAYER OF 90’S PASSES AWAY Adolph Vollendorf, Local Man Who Was In Big Game Years Ago, Dies At Age of 54 Adolph “Jim” Vollendorf, stone cutter by trade, but who achieved no little fame and a trial in the “big show” when he pitched the Manitowoc ball club to a 4 to 2 victory over Connie Mack and his Milwaukee Brewers, in the late 90s in a historic battle on the old west side grounds, died Saturday evening, at the hospital here. He was 54 years of age and has been an invalid for a number of years. Given a trial by the Milwaukee team in the American Association after his south paw slants had tamed Connie Mack and his team. Vollendorf was later sent to the Denver club in the Western league, where he pitched for three or four years as a member of that club. He then returned to Manitowoc to pitch and manage a local semi-pro club, and after his playing days were over returned to his trade of a stone cutter. Born in Manitowoc November 17, 1874, Adolph Vollendorf obtained an education in the schools here and early embranced the stone cutting trade, which he followed, and at the same time played sand lot ball in Manitowoc. He started out as an outfielder and then took to infielding, covering second base. In the early nineties his playing attracted the attention of the scouts from the Michigan State league and he was signed up to play with Flint in that circuit. Finally that circuit went under and Vollendorf returned to Manitowoc and joined the local team which was establishing quite a reputation at the tag end of the season by defeating all the crack teams in the state. After the Association race had closed at Milwaukee, Connie Mack, now one of the owners and the manager of the Philadelphia Athletes in the American League, took his team, the Brewers, on a barnstorming trip and a game was arranged for Manitowoc at the old west side grounds. Signed by Milwaukee In that game “Jim” Vollendorf pitched for the local and among others of the team in that game were William and Thorval Torrison, Tony Framer, Charles Schuette and Runkel in the infield and Wm. Rathsack, John Johnson and Frank Rosenfelder in the outfield. LaFleuer was Vollendorf’s catcher. “Jim” had everything that afternoon, and Connie Mack and his team simply could not touch his left handed offerings. Mack himself caught for Milwaukee, while big Pete Dowling pitched. At the end of the eighth inning, with Manitowoc in front 4 to 2, Mack took his team off the field, with an excuse that he was getting the worst of the umpiring. But fans here still maintain that it was simply a ruse of Mack to avoid the humility of having his team beaten by a tem from “up there in the woods.” After the game Mack called Vollendorf and arranged to have him report to Milwaukee the following spring. He did so but Mack had an abundance of pitching talent that year and so he shipped the local man to Denver in the Western league. There he pitched for three seasons and later played in the outfield, on account of his hitting. Returns Here to Manage Team It was after his playing days in the Western league that he returned to Manitowoc to pitch for and manage a team here for a season or two. Then his arm went back on him and he quit the game to resume his trade—that of a stonecutter. For a number of years he was employed by the city. In past years his illness prevented him from continuing his trade. In 1902 he was married to Miss Josephine Peterek who with sons Adolph Jr., 17, and Reynold, 16, survive. One brother, Emil Vollendorf, and two sisters, Mrs. Victor Klingholz and Mrs. Joseph P. Breuer also survive. The remains may be viewed this evening at the Frazier mortuary, Chicago and Ninth streets, and the funeral services will be held from that place Tuesday afternoon, at two o’clock, Rev. Hood officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen. Manitowoc Herald News, November 26, 1928 P. 2 ******** [bur. 11-27-1928/age 54 yrs./cause: apoplexy]

GEORGE VOLLENDORF SWITCHMAN KILLED George Vollendorf, well known as “Dick”, a switchman in the Chicago & Northwestern Railway yards for years past, met his death under a switch engine in the yards Sunday evening. Vollendorf had just set three cars on a siding and was walking along ahead of the engine. The heel of his shoe caught in a frog. The engine was close behind and he tried frantically to jerk his shoe clear. Engineer Dickman saw his terrible position and did everything in his power to stop the locomotive but with only a few yards of space the engine could not be brought to a standstill and it slowly rolled over the unfortunate man and virtually cut his body in two. Death must have been instantaneous. He is survived by his widow and two children, Raymond, 15 and Norma, 13. The funeral is being held this afternoon from the home at 817 South 17th St. Rev. Grether officiates at the home and the Royal League at Evergreen.
