CATHARINA VOGEL Mrs. Catherine Vogel(sic), one of the pioners of the city, passed away at the home of her niece, Mrs. J. H. Newman, 1228 South Main Street at 8 o'clock this morning. She had been ill but a comparitively short time and her death was a severe shock to relatives. She had passed the three score and ten years allotted to humanity and was in her 77th year. Born in Germany in October, 1823, she came to this country with her father in 1852. A short time after their arrival she was married to Henry Vogel and they removed to this city. A peculiar coincidence is that her husband died just 16 years ago to the hour and in the same house where she passed away. No children blessed the union and after her husband's death she made her home with her niece. She was one of a family of eight children and her mother died while she was yet an infant. Deceased was a woman of extra ordinary ability and was respected by a large circle of acquaintances. Of a quiet, retiring disposition she cared very little for the frivolities of life and her chief enjoyment was about the fireside of the family. The funeral will be held at the home Sunday at 2 o'clock. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Jan. 6, 1899 page 1 ******** [cause: asphyxia] ******** STATE OF WISCONSIN-MANITOWOC COUNTY COURT. In Probate. ETHEL VOGEL POISON OF SEWER GASES This Is Believed to Have Caused Death of Two Year Old Child on South Side ENTIRE FAMILY OF SIX ILL Broken Sewer Pipe in Cellar at Home of Daniel Vogel May Have Been Responsible Poisoning from the escaping sewer gases, that invaded the home as the result of a broken pipe in the cellar, is believed to have caused the death of the two year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Vogel which occurred Saturday evening and it is feared that other members of the family have been affected. Symptoms of the child’s illness indicated poison of some nature and investigation made revealed the broken sewer pipe in the cellar, in a room that is directly under that used by the family as sleeping apartments and it is the opinion given by physicians that death was due to the escaping gases. Three young children of the family were taken ill at the same time and although the other two recovered upon treatment given by physicians, there was apparent but little improvement in the younger child and death resulted Saturday. There had been noticeable for some time previous to the serious illness of the child a decline in health and the parents state that they had noted the odor, that is now ascribed to sewer gases for some time, but had not discovered the broken pipe. The physician who was called directed the investigation and a city plumber who was called in located the pipe. Although repairs have been made and precautions taken there is danger of typhoid fever to other members of the family from the effects they have suffered. This is the second child that Mr. and Mrs. Vogel have lost by death since their removal here and the sympathy of many friends is extended to them in their sad bereavement. The family resides at 1418 Marshal street in the same district in which the city has been experiencing trouble with the sewers that have been damaged by the recent heavy rains. Manitowoc Pilot, February 11, 1875 P. 3 ********* DIED. In this city on the morning of the 4th inst., of inflammation of the lungs and disease of the liver, Catherine, wife of Anton Vogt, aged 43 years. The above announcement will be read with sincere regret by the many friends of the deceased, who through life endeared herself to all with whom she came in contact by her uniform kindness; and we fell that in extending our sympathy to the husband and four children who have thus been afflicted, we but express the sentiment of our entire community. Her funeral, which took place on Sunday, was attended by the Odd Fellows and Sons of Herman, and numerous friends who, despite the bitter cold, were anxious to show their affection for the deceased and their sympathy for the afflicted relatives. Peace to her ashes. Manitowoc Pilot, February 11, 1875 P. 5 ********** The death of Mrs. Anton Vogt, notice of which appears elsewhere in this paper, is a sad blow to her husband and a large circle of family friends, by whom she seems to have been regarded with more than ordinary affection. Numerous friends at Two Rivers, where she resided a number of years after her marriage, as well as at Manitowoc, will sincerely sympathize with the bereaved husband and family. We had not the pleasure of personal acquaintance with the deceased, but have known of her for the last nineteen year and know her worth by the universality of esteem in which she was held by all her intimate acquaintances. She was born in Prussia in 1831, came to this country in 1855 and was married at Two Rivers in the fall of the same year. The strength of affection felt for her was attested by her brothers, John Althen, of Sycamore, Ill., and Casper, of Elgin, who, upon the first intimation of her dangerous illness, left their homes and their extensive business and hastened to her bedside, arriving on Tuesday last, two or three days before her decease. The funeral was attended by a large number of friends on Sunday last, the procession, we are informed, extended the length of four blocks. Had it not been for the extreme cold weather and the snow blockade, half of Two Rivers would have testified their respect for deceased and sincere sympathy with husband, children, relatives and friends, by swelling the numbers of those who shared in these last sad rites. As it was, a few, in spite of cold weather and almost impassable condition of the roads, were present from Two Rivers. She leaves, beside her husband, four children to mourn her loss.-T.R. Chrou. ANTON VOGT (d. 1911) DEATH TAKES “UNCLE VOGT”, AGED 79 YEARS Pioneer Furniture Man and Undertaker Goes to Final Rest WAS ONE OF BEST KNOWN MEN OF CITY Anton Vogt, familiarly known to the city as “Uncle Vogt,” a title by which he loved to be addressed, has finished with life and at the age of 79 today laid aside the burdens of a long, useful career to find solace in the sleep that knows to waking. Mr. Vogt’s death occurred at the home of City Treasurer Bruno Mueller on N. Ninth street where he had been cared for by his daughter Mrs. Mueller during the past six weeks of his last illness and the end was peaceful. For several days Mr. Vogt had been in an unconscious state and he failed to rally before death, earthly slumbers being merged into the deeper sleep of death, almost without notice by anxious watchers at the bedside. Mr. Vogt was born at Dornholzhausen, Prussia, November 24, 1832 and came to America as a youth of 23 in 1855, settling at Two Rivers where he was married in 1855. Mr. Vogt was employed at the Two Rivers shipyards which in that early day was engaged in building of boats for the lakes. Mr. Vogt remained at Two Rivers twelve years when he came to Manitowoc and established himself in business as a furniture dealer and undertaker, the store being in Leups block near the bridge of So. Eighth street and for thirty five years, Uncle Vogt was one of the best known businessmen of the city. Established in 1867, the Vogt store passed from control of Mr. Vogt in 1902 his retirement coming as result of advancing age which made it impossible for him to give attention to the business which it demanded. Since 1902 Mr. Vogt had lived in retirement but daily made his visit downtown where he was always assured of a warm greeting being widely known and of genial disposition that won him friends. Twice married, his first wife passed away in 1875, Mr. Vogt is survived by his widow and three children, one daughter, Mrs. B. Mueller and two sons, Henry of this city and Edward who is in the West. Mr. Vogt was a member of the Masonic Order, the Odd Fellows and of the Sons of Herman and was constant in his allegiance to the Orders attending meetings of the Odd Fellows up to within a few weeks of his last illness. Despite his advanced age Mr. Vogt enjoyed fair health up to a very recent time and was about the city as late as eight weeks ago. He made frequent visits at Elgin where he has a nephew who was a favorite with him and enjoyed life. His death will cause a pang of sorrow to many who knew him and remember him as a kindly old gentleman. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 from the home of City Treasurer Bruno Mueller on North Ninth street with interment at Evergreen cemetery.
